One caveat before we talk about upcoming funding opportunities. Because the NN/LM SCR is federally funded, our budget comes from appropriations. This means that we don’t know how many of each award the NN/LM SCR will be able to offer. This is kind of a sneak peak. What funding opportunities will be available from the NN/LM SCR office?

List of Funding Opportunities

Under the funding tab, there is table listing all of the NN/LM SCR funding opportunities. The status is listed as closed on all but one. This is for the 2013 cycle. As soon as the 2014 cycle begins, the status on all of the awards will change to Open. We anticipate offering 12 funding opportunities, funding permitting. Note the submission deadlines and amounts may change.
Awards not Grants

As a Contractor, the NN/LM SCR cannot offer grants. We don’t mention the “G” word. We instead make funding available through an “award mechanism.” Essentially, the NN/LM SCR has money available and we refer to them as awards. That is why all of the following opportunities are called awards.
Professional Development Award

The purpose of this award is to enable individuals at NN/LM SCR Network member institutions to expand professional knowledge and experience to provide improved health information access to healthcare providers and consumers. This award is $1,500. Previous recipients have attended the American Public Health Association, Science Boot camps, American Library Association. The only limitation is that Health Sciences Librarians cannot use the funds to attend MLA or SCC.
Digital Preservation and Access

The purpose of the Digital Preservation and Access (DiPA) Award is to increase accessibility to historically significant and unique items in the South Central Region by providing funding for Network members to digitize portions of their collections. These digital collections will be made freely available online. This award will likely be $20,000. Past recipients have digitized photographs, newsletters and manuscripts. They key with this is to ensure that copyright has been obtained.
Disaster Preparedness

This award assists libraries in preparing for disasters so that they, in turn, can assist their communities with health information and other recovery needs after an emergency. This award will be $8,000. Previous recipients have been the Dallas Public Library who created one-shelf disaster library collection along with a community preparedness guide. The city of Hydro in Oklahoma, through their library, had a project which provides tablets and training on NLM disaster preparedness databases.
Electronic Consumer Health Outreach

The goal of this award is to ensure that health professionals, their patients and the general public are connected to the health information resources they need to make informed health care decisions. This is a $25,000 award. Previous funded projects have targeted seniors, YMCA, Shriners and Native American groups.
Express Outreach Award

The purpose of the Express Outreach Award is to support a wide range of outreach projects aimed at improving access to and use of the National Library of Medicine’s databases to improve access to health information. This award is $5,000 and the sky is the limit as far as target populations. Previously targeted groups have included: health care providers, community based organizations, school nurses, rural populations, faith based organizations, homeless populations and predominantly Spanish speaking groups. Multiple awards are usually offered.
Information Needs Assessment

The purpose of the Health Information Needs Assessment Award is to improve health information outreach through increased knowledge of community needs. One of the problems that information providers typically face is that they assume they know what information people need. The award is $5,000. Previous funded projects information needs of seniors, nurses, school health centers and public health groups.
Hospital Library Promotion

The purpose of this award is to support projects that promote the value of the hospital library to the hospital administrators and staff. As hospitals expand their services and programs, hospital librarians can play a significant role in areas such as: education and training to address knowledge management, clinical information systems, patient safety programs, electronic health records, health literacy, or patient education. The award is $5,000. Previous recipients included: Cook Children’s, JPS Health Network.
Mobile Applications Project

The purpose of the Mobile Applications Project (MAP) Award is to provide an opportunity for Network members to provide outreach and increase access to health information utilizing mobile technologies. Projects may target health professionals, public librarians, public health workers, consumers, or the general public. Recipients are encouraged to promote awareness and utilization of mobile sites and services from the National Library of Medicine. Funding amount is not clear at this point. Funding will likely be at $5,000. Previous projects have targeted promotoras (community health workers), hospitals.
Outreach to Healthcare Providers

The purpose of this awardis to ensure improved access to health information and Health Information Technology for those health providers without adequate access to library and information services. This solicitation will focus on projects designed to improve access to electronic health information for such groups and organizations as: unaffiliated healthcare providers located in rural, inner city, and Medically Underserved Areas (MUA), public health workers, minority health practitioners, and those who serve minority populations. It is a reformatting of a previously offered award. It will likely be offered in the $8,000 range.

Clearly Defined Goal

The goal of your project should be clearly defined. Your reviewer should never have to guess at the goal of your project.
Detailed Description of Activities

Provide a detailed description of the activities you need to conduct as part of the project. If you are teaching, include information on what you will be teaching, how many people will attend, where you will be teaching and other pertinent information. For digitization projects, how many items will you digitize, how long will it take.
Clear Description of Target Group

Clearly describe your target group. Describe where they are located, what their needs are, why your plan will help them. Never guess that the target group needs the program you are proposing.
Focused Evaluation

Evaluate each major activity. If you are conducting training, how will you assess the effectiveness of the training? How will you assess whether or not the project was a success?
Appropriate Budget

Ensure that your budget is appropriate for the project. Make sure the numbers add up correctly. Make sure you clearly describe how much you will pay for each item. Make sure you have quotes on equipment. Anything in the proposal should be in the budget.
