«When Pope Francis decided to grant a hearing to the Union of Superiors General of the Men Religious Institutes at the end of their 82nd General Assembly on 29th November 2013, he had one thing clear: he did not want to make any speech nor did he want to listen to any. It was his intention to enter into the dynamics of the discussion of the Superiors General, have questions to ponder on and to give an answer to. I was there to record the conversation and then write it down. It has been an experience that I would call “inspiring”: the dialogue has been really like that and contents have poured out of the comparison in a spontaneous, natural way, leaving in the participants the sense of an actual and consoling meeting. In this volume the reader will find the narration of that conversation and the answers that the Pope gave to the questions that were asked to him» (Father Antonio Spadaro, the editor in chief of Civiltà Cattolica).

Carlo Maria MartiniTERESA D’AVILA, MAESTRA DI PREGHIERATERESA OF AVILA, A TEACHER OF PRAYING

Series: The Anchors • Pgs. 112

The book contains four meditations on praying that Cardinal Martini held at Avila and Segovia during a pilgrimage with the priests of the diocese of Milan, when he was their Archbishop. The meditations are organized as if in dialogue with the texts of Teresa of Avila:«She is the saint who has lived in herself as an icon, and more effectively she has theorized, the theme of personal prayer, of its methods, of the paths of oration, of its necessity and utter usefulness, its joys and its trials».

Carlo Maria Martini(Turin, February 15th 1927 - Gallarate, August 31st 2012), was a Jesuit and a Cardinal since 1983. From 1980 to 2002 he was the Archbishop of Milan. A biblical scholar of international reputation, from 1964 to 1969 Martini was the only Catholic member of the committee of scholars who edited The Greek New Testament, the basis of over 800 versions of the New Testament all over the world. From 1987 to 1993 he was President of the Council of the European Episcopal Conferences. His theological-spiritual meditations and his pastoral activity have been a reference point for believers and atheists, Christians of any confessions and Jews. Among the most relevant initiatives he promoted in Milan there is the «School of the Word», to help young people to approach the Scripture according to the method of lectio divina and the «Chair of non-believers», meetings on the great questions of faith.

Aldo Maria ValliCHIESA ASCOLTACI!CHURCH LISTEN TO US!The “irregular” believers turn to SynodSeries: Family paths • Pgs. 160

Who are, in practice, the “irregular” believers? What do they think? How do they live their condition? How do they consider rules? Do they respect them? Do they not cheat? What makes them suffer more? How have they lived the Synod on the Pastoral for the Family called for by Pope Francis? And what kind of relationship has the Church, through its ministers, with the “irregular” believers? An agile journalistic reportage that listens to people living marriage situations which are considered “irregular” according to Catholic doctrine (for example: the divorced and remarried), or more generally to those who live important experiences of emotional ties which the Church has traditionally judged negatively (e.g.: cohabitation, homosexual couples). The voices collected here belong to people living in different contexts, have different jobs and very different education. What they do have in common, besides the situation of “being irregular” according to the rules established by the Church, is faith. A passionate faith indeed, we would say. This book gives voice to the “irregulars” with frankness and honesty.By the same author:IL BAMBINO CHE PORTAVA ACQUAPgs. 160 - Rights sold: Czech, English, French, Slovak, Spanish

Aldo Maria ValliL’ALFABETO DI PAPA FRANCESCOTHE ALPHABET OF POPE FRANCISWords and gestures of a pontificateSeries: Il Cupolone • Pgs. 64

«Always preach the Gospel, and, if necessary, also with words». Francis has said that over and over again. Thus, if we want to create an “alphabet of Pope Bergoglio” we must consider not only the words he has spoken, but also his gestures, attitudes, choices. From A of “affair” to Z for “zucchetto”. Important topics, such as “family” and “joy”, but also some curious and surprising entries. This is the case of the letter B, where you can find the “bag” that the Pope carries on the plane; or the T, with the “telephone” so much loved by Francis; and the U, which includes the economy cars, the “utilitarie”, he uses to move around. The result is a summary, written in a witty and original style, of the most characteristic aspects of a pontificate that is marking indelibly the message and style of the Church.

Aldo Maria Valliwas born in 1958 in Rho and is a journalist and a writer. Since 2007 he has been the Vatican Correspondent for the first channel of the Italian Television, after working in the same role for the third channel for seven years.

Aldo Maria Valli«AVETE UN COMPITO GRANDE»«YOU HAVE A GREAT TASK»Grandparents according to Pope FrancisSeries: Il Cupolone • Pgs. 32

«Grandparents are a treasure», says Pope Francis, especially as far as life with faith is concerned. «The memory of our ancestors brings us to the imitation of faith». Often old age means suffering and sickness, «but the wisdom our grandparents have is something we must welcome as an inheritance». Thus, they have been entrusted with «a great task».

Aldo Maria ValliIN FAMIGLIA CON PAPA FRANCESCOIN THE FAMILY WITH POPE FRANCISGrandparents according to Pope FrancisSeries: Il Cupolone • Pgs. 48

Whether it is to describe the problems of the family or to suggest solutions, Pope Francis manages to combine evangelical inspiration and healthy realism. That emerges not only in major decisions, such as choosing to dedicate two world assemblies of bishops to the joys and sorrows of the family, but especially in preaching to the “people of God”: «We all know – the Pope tells the couples of fiancés – that the perfect family does not exist, nor does the perfect husband or the perfect wife. Not to speak of the perfect mother-in-law!». In a family, Pope Francis has explained on several occasions, «plates may even fly», the important thing is «never end the day without making peace»: a small gesture, just a caress. And then there are the three famous «magic words», his recipe for a lasting relationship: always be able to say «please, thank you, sorry». Simple words, that go directly to the heart.

The Archbishop GianCarlo Maria Bregantini, answering the questions of the theologian Valentino Salvoldi, rethinks and revises his life in the light of the heroic faith of the Apostle Peter. The fragile faith of the Prince of the Apostles, who, not by chance, has got two names: Simon the sinner and Peter the saint. The authors, analyzing human frailty, show how to turn it into force. Mario ImperatoriIL CAMMINO DI GESÙTHE WAY OF JESUSFrom the resurrection to the parousiaSeries: Crossroads • Pgs. 144

Considering that the theme of the parousia remains alien to the spiritual life of many Christians, the author tries to point out the importance of examining some fundamental issues of Christology, by focusing on the relationship between history and theology. The five chapters of the book develop the theme as follows:1. Jesus of Nazareth, between historical research and theology2. Jesus facing his death3. A way toward the open sepulchre: Johannine tradition and Easter event4. Jesus’ Resurrection and historical research: what is the relationship?5. The parousia between history and eschatology

Mario Imperatoria Jesuit, was born in 1958 in Locarno (Switzerland). Davide CaldirolaIL FUOCO E LA STRADATHE FIRE AND THE ROADIn the footsteps of MosesSeries: The Anchors • Pgs. 128

Here we contemplate the story of Moses, his meeting with the Absolute. It is the story of each of us, before the fire of God and in front of the fatigue of the road, lost between fears and hopes, uncertain between calls and falls, in the balance between the sounds of life and the endless silence of the heart.

Davide Caldirolawas born in 1963 and has been a parish priest in Milan since 1987. At present he is the parson of two parishes assembled in the «Pastoral Community» in Milan. He organizes spiritual retreats and spiritual exercises for priests, as well as groups of listening of the Word for young people. Maria Grazia Prandino and Umberto BovaniI COLORI DELLA CARNETHE COLOURS OF THE FLESHPracticing discernment in the life as a coupleSeries: On the way • Pgs. 120

A married couple with three children re-interprets its experience with the method of the discernment according to the Spiritual Exercises of St. Ignatius. «The qualities of this book are not few. First of all it is a text that shows an innovative and unexplored path, as it applies the experience and the method of the Exercises of St. Ignatius to the life of the couple. But there is another aspect that I like in this book: the combination of interpretative reflections and illustrative images confers this work a useful and unusual narrative dimension» (from the preface by Father Silvano Fausti). The spiritual reflection is effectively accompanied by a meditation on paintings by Chagall, Magritte, Köder, collected in a separate booklet in full colour that can be held open next to the book while reading it.

Spouses Maria Grazia Prandino and Umberto Bovani have three children and are both teachers (he teaches Literature, she teaches Arts). Since 1998 they have been living at the Sanctuary of St. Anthony in Boves, near Cuneo, where they organize courses in spirituality for couples and families, inspired by the Spiritual Exercises of Ignatius of Loyola. Since 2004 they have been trainers at the Summer Courses for families of Selva di Val Gardena in the house of the Jesuits. Since 2011 they have been the representatives for the family branch of the Jesuits in Italy. Since 2013 they have taken charge of Villa Santa Croce in San Mauro Torinese, the home of the Society of Jesus, where they’re positioning a Centre of Ignatian domestic spirituality.

Augusto Bonora L’AQUILA E LA COLOMBATHE EAGLE AND THE DOVEMeditations on the Gospel of JohnSeries: The Anchors • Pgs. 160

The author approaches the Johannine narrative not with the simple intent to study it exegetically, but with the desire to create a bridge between the reader and the Gospel, to have a dialogue between «the wealth of contemporary exegesis and daily life» of those who read his work.Hence the choice of adding, to the biblical comment, practical examples, references to the lives of the saints and to modern authors. The annotated passages, at the beginning and in the first part of the Gospel of John, are then approached with two special focuses: the former has to do with the Ignatian pedagogy of the Spiritual Exercises, the latter concerns the decision to favour the meeting between the reader and some figures of faith.«The deep intention of these pages is to tell the richness of the mystery contained in the Gospel of John to all those who, with simple eyes and with the openness of the heart of the small, want to meet him» (from the Preface).

Augusto Bonoraborn in Inzago, was ordained a priest by Cardinal Carlo Maria Martini in 1987. He worked for six years as the director of the oratory at the Parish of The Holy Trinity of Milan, his first destination after the ordination. After a licentiate in spiritual theology at the Gregorian University in Rome, for some years he was the chaplain of the University of Milan with also diocesan tasks and lived in the family community of Castellazzo di Basiano. After working for three years with the Society of Jesus, Bonora has returned to his diocesan commitment, first as rector of the church of San Raffaele in Milan and, since 2010, as the parish priest of San Galdino, on the outskirts of Milan.

Giovanni CucciPARADISO VIRTUALE O INFER.NET?VIRTUAL PARADISE OR INFER.NET?Risks and opportunities of the digital revolutionSeries: Crossroads • Pgs. 104

Since its appearance, the web, like every great invention, has not ceased to provoke debate, enthusiasms and at the same time warning signals, because it offers, along with new opportunities, the same problems of the offline world, only on another level. As a matter of fact, the web is not just a tool, but a real “universe”, which is parallel and sometimes alternative to the “real” world. Whatever point of view one assumes, this represents in any case a point of no return, something with which one must deal. Hence the importance of an approach respecting the complexity of the web, in order to be able to exploit the huge and fascinating possibilities at their best, without omitting the possible risks.

Giovanni Cuccia Jesuit, graduated in philosophy at the Catholic University of Milan. After studying theology he studied psychology and has a Ph.D. in philosophy at the Pontifical Gregorian University, where he teaches the same subjects. He is a member of the board of writers of La Civiltà Cattolica.

The age in which we live allows, if not in all countries and for all people, to exceed in satisfying our senses, both on a physical and spiritual level, and to fulfill their insatiable expectations: overfeeding, paroxysmal use of the media, the excessive chatting, the propensity to endless television hubble-bubble, telematics addiction, the endless spectacularization of every event, even the most squalid and more cruel, the abuse of natural resources, pathological gambling addiction and the unstoppable consumerism...This tendency to exceeding has dramatic implications for both the mental and the physical balance of human beings, isolated from their soul and enemies of their body, space and time; and as well for the safeguard of natural assets and the resources of the planet. In the face of these dangers, the book is an invitation to rediscover the physical and spiritual gifts of moderation, sobriety, the practice of those “fasts” that make the food of body and soul tastier and less harmful: for ourselves, for our neighbours, for the environment.

Cristiano BaldisseraDENTRO MEDJUGORJEINSIDE MEDJUGORJEDiary of a postmodern pilgrimageSeries: Focus • Pgs. 104

What is Medjugorje and what is really going on in the pilgrimages to the Bosnian village? What is the experience of the pilgrim nowadays made of?This book describes the world of the pilgrimages to Medjugorje – of which we hear so much but of which little is known – without assuming any judgmental position, without siding with supporters or with detractors, but simply witnessing the events that are being experienced and occur in those places and which show us a surprising insight-little known, but crucial to understand our times and to cast a look on the future of contemporary spirituality. This is a peculiar, original work on a very topical issue, written from an anthropological angle in narrative and popular style that will appeal to a wide audience of onlookers and insiders, to both believers and skeptics.

Cristiano Baldisseraborn in Venice, got his degree in Contemporary History at the University Ca’ Foscari of Venice.
