FINGER LAKES RIESLING FESTIVAL 2 AUGUST 10 & 11, 2013

ARBOR HILL GRAPERY & WINERY

Arbor Hill Grapery & Winery, located at the southern end of Canandaigua Lake, is not just a winery, but a four-generation family tradition of fine flavors. This grape-growing tradition began in the early 1900s when Anna Randall married Elmer Standish and has passed through four generations. Current owners, the husband and wife team of John and Katie Brahm, continue the tradition today.

Situated in a charming New England country setting in South Bristol, John and Katie have restored antique buildings to showcase Arbor Hill’s award-winning wines, gourmet food products, grape country gifts and specialty gift boxes—offering “everything grape and more,” including the area’s popular treat, grape pie.

Arbor Hill specializes in eclectic varieties worthy of attention. In 1996, Arbor Hill was the first winery in the world to introduce Traminette wine. Arbor Hill also introduced a new red wine in 2006 called Noiret. Both varieties use new hybrid grapes developed over the last 30 years by Cornell University at the Geneva Experiment Station.

In 2011, Arbor Hill partnered with Hartmann’s Old World Sausage in Canandaigua to offer Brew & Brats, a venture built upon the rich historical significance and enjoyment of hops, an integral ingredient of beer. The featured sausage is made with Arbor Hill Sherried Wine BBQ Sauce which has been a staple at Arbor Hill almost since the winery opened in 1987. The Bristol Springs Brand craft beers served exclusively at Brew & Brats at Arbor Hill were developed by a team of ten dedicated beer lovers who wanted to find a balance of flavors found in the wineries pale ale, IPA and porter.

Arbor Hill remains aware of some of the great wine varietals that started our industry 150 years ago. They re-introduced Vergennes in 2005, Iona in 2008, and their newest, Diana in 2011. Arbor Hill is also on the cutting edge of introducing new varietal wines that exemplify the best of the Finger Lakes viticulture region.

FINGER LAKES RIESLING FESTIVAL 3 AUGUST 10 & 11, 2013

The Finger Lakes region is worth celebrating. Beautiful lakes. Nature’s bounty. The friendliest people. In one weekend, we celebrate it all! Join us on Saturday, August 10 and Sunday, August 11 for our 5th exciting year of the 2013 Finger Lakes Riesling Festival. Wineries, breweries, restaurants, cheesemakers, artists, craftsmen and musicians gather in one place to bring everything that makes our region special.

Set along beautiful shore of Canandaigua Lake, the festival offers something for everyone. Riesling tastings and seminars, beer tastings, artisan cheese samplings and a harvest-fresh farmers market with vendors galore will please your palate. Live entertainment, arts and crafts will compliment this year’s lively, festival activities.

A portion of the festival’s proceeds will benefit the Canandaigua Family YMCA, to help individuals attend and participate in programs and activities offered there. According to Lindsey Dixon, development and communications director for the Canandaigua YMCA, the festival is the biggest fundraiser of the year for the YMCA. To date, more than $120,000 has been raised which helps pay for kids, adults, teens and seniors to attend the Y.

On Saturday, the festival will host the 5K Riesling Run. More than 75 percent of the Run’s participants are from out-of-state but take part

because they have family members who attend the Canandaigua YMCA.

This year, the Riesling Festival has teamed up with the Canandaigua Rotary to bring to you the Canandaigua Rotary Waterfront Festival and Dance, with extended hours for live music, dancing, wine and beer tastings and fireworks on Saturday night until 10:00 pm. Proceeds will benefit the charities of the Canandaigua Rotary.

The festival is not only a great way to raise money to benefit a local cause, but it showcases the great Finger Lakes region. It has something to offer for everyone! The festival continues to grow, and provides an opportunity for the Finger Lakes region to enhance its reputation for world-class culture.

Each vendor invites festival-goers to taste their Rieslings plus one additional variety. The New York State Craft Beer Tent presented by Wegmans takes place on Saturday and Sunday with abundant cheese and food pairings.

“The festival is driven by people full of energy, passion, and ideas,” says John Ingle Jr., CEO of Heron Hill Winery. Experience the Finger Lakes viniculture and plenitude. Come out to the festival and have fun, enjoy good times, celebrate summer and family, taste, learn and simply enjoy the vibe!

Get ready for a fun-filled weekend!

The Finger Lakes region has been called the Napa Valley of the East Coast because of the fine wines, especially Rieslings, produced by the more than 90 wineries in the region. The Finger Lakes Riesling Festival, held every August, gives attendees a taste of some of these wines as the area’s finest wineries will be offering samples of their award-winning Rieslings. Here are just some of the festival’s participanting wineries.

Casa Larga Vineyards has produced more than 15 award-winning wines in the past 35 years. With a family tradition, Casa Larga puts a high standard on ensuring they have the best quality fruit for the wines they produce, and are becoming one of the leading wine producers in the Finger Lakes region. They pride themselves on their Rieslings and Ice Wines. Time is valuable to the distinctive character of the Rieslings and many of the vineyard’s vines vary in age from the original 40-year-old plantings to the most recent 5-year-old vines. 2287 Turk Hill Road, Fairport. For more information visit www.casalarga.com

Fulkerson Winery is a sixth-generation owned winery and fresh juice plant in Dundee, on the west side of Seneca Lake in the heart of the Finger Lakes. They offer a selection of handcrafted wines including several styles of Rieslings, a large selection of dry reds, artful ice wines, and more. Their focus on Riesling shines from the mineral driven, crisp flavors of the Riesling Reserve to the tropical tastes of the Semi-Dry Riesling to the mouth filling, sumptuous flavors of their William Vigne Juicy Sweet Riesling. Whether you prefer dry,semi-dry or sweet, Fulkerson has a Riesling to suit your palate. Home winemakers enjoy Fulkerson’s high quality fresh-pressed grape juices—more than 25 varieties are available in the fall, along with a full line of home winemaking supplies and select

brewing supplies. 5576 Rt. 14 in Dundee. For more information about the winery visit www.fulkersonwinery.com

Glenora Wine Cellars, a pioneer in the renaissance of the Finger Lakes wine industry, has been producing award-winning high quality wines for more than 34 years. In 1977, Glenora became the first winery to open on Seneca Lake, which is in the heart of the Finger Lakes wine country. They knew that wine was not the only thing they could offer. A 30-room inn (Inn at Glenora) and a gourmet restaurant (Veraisons) join the winery on the beautifully groomed 40-

acre estate. Passion and a firm belief that Riesling is the noblest variety on earth drives the vineyard’s winemakers. A versatile and unique grape varietal, Glenora’s Riesling reflects the philosophy of owner Gene Pierce that wine should taste like the grape and it’s moment in time and place. With the experience of 32 crushes, winemaker Steve DiFrancesco ensures unique and consistent quality Rieslings in a variety of styles. 5435 Route 14 New York 14, Dundee, for more information visit www.glenora.com

The Hazlitt family has been growing grapes on the eastern shore of Seneca Lake for more than 150 years. Established with the 1984 vintage and opened to the public in 1985, Hazlitt 1852 Vineyards continues the six-generation family tradition of sustainable viticulture and award-winning wine production. Now, with two locations they produce two of New York’s most popular and best-selling wines—Red Cat and White Cat. Hazlitt is also the official wine of Watkins Glen International. The winery was rated as having one of America’s Top 25 Tasting Rooms by Wine Enthusiast Magazine. The unpretentious, happy, and relaxed spirit of Hazlitt remains the same today as it has for Continued on next page...

Heron Hill Winery is nestled into a hill overlooking scenic Keuka Lake. For more than 30 years, the winery has set the highest standards for wine quality, customer satisfaction and tasting room experience. Since its first vintage in 1977, the winery has steadily grown into a dynamic production facility and entertainment destination with more than 50,000 visitors enjoying distinctive, elegant wine, delicious food, good music and fun events. The 20-acre vineyard is located on the Ingles property, who maintain the vines with their staff. There are also 12 acres of hand-maintained grapevines onsite at the winery. A personal approach and commitment to quality is evident throughout every aspect of making, serving, and selling nearly 20 award-winning varieties. Heron Hill Winery was named as one of the ten most spectacular tasting rooms in the world by Travel + Leisure Magazine, only two of which were located in the US. 5323 Seneca Point Road, Canandaigua. www.heronhill.com

Riesling abounds here! Three Brothers Wineries and Estates located on the northeast edge of Seneca Lake just outside of Geneva, has an ideal spot to grow and nurture their 15 acres of Riesling grapes. The Finger Lakes region has a superior microclimate for growing Riesling grapes and it shows in the award-winning

wines produced at the winery. The three unique wineries and microbrewery are within walking distance of each other as Three Brothers salute the versatile, highly coveted grape variety. Owners David and Luanne Mansfield make the Riesling Festival a family affair; working, enjoying the setting and the delicious food, and finding unique treasures to take home. They also love the educational component. Their Riesling beer, as far as they know (created by Luanne Mansfield) is the first of its kind in the world. 623 Lerch Road, Geneva. Visit www.3brotherswinery.com for information.

Inspire Moore was the first winery to be

established in the Naples Valley in more than 100 years. The winery owners, Tim and Diane Moore, whose winemaking roots trace back to California, renovated a circa 1865 carriage house to create an artistic space. Their winery seeks to show the true characteristics of the vineyards, and express the passion and art of the farmers who create the flavors of their wines. Several of their wines are named after their children, giving meaning to the taste and story of the wines. Inspire Moore is a boutique winery producing a few thousand cases of Finger Lakes appellation wines. The focus on aromatic varietal whites, vintage driven varietal reds, ice wine and blends are defined by small lot production. When you visit don’t forget to visit the Roots Cafe adjacent to the winery, whose food is created with the same philosophy as the wines, using local ingredients found throughout the seasons. 197 North Main Street Naples. Nearly half of those are from other states and are drawn by the word-of-mouth reputation. “We have an incredible variety of classes,” says Belelieu. “Our in-house and hired instructors, mostly local, are highly trained. We also host several guest-chefs from around the state for classes and to cook in the restaurant.”Attendees are food and wine enthusiasts, hospitality
