MORE FUN COMING IN 2016 Thank you Donna and Ron for hosting our annual Post Holiday Gift Exchange and Planning Party. Your spiral ham was deeeeicious as was all the other dishes everyone brought to share. The gift game started out rather mundane and then finished with a flurry of steals – hot items this year were a set of storage jars, wine of course, horseshoe hook. Last year's blow-up cowboy made a return appearance. And where was the horse-head spatula bought? We dedicated much more time to eating and playing, rather than planning. But we do have a good start and there is still time for you to offer more ideas on where you want to ride and what you want to do. So, get out your calendars:

SNEAKIN' DEACONBeloved German Shepherd of Jacquie and Dick Cowan of Crownsville, Md

After 13 years of love and fun, he has passed over the Rainbow Bridge to rejoin his best bud, Gatsby. He loved our travel adventures – camping, trail riding and hanging out at the horse shows up and down the east coast and beyond. At an awesome 120 pounds, he parted crowds --- little did strangers know he was such a loving soul. He was quite the comic riding in the Mustang with the top down and his white goggles on. Deacon thanks the Chesapeake Club for all the treats during our Club gatherings at his house. And oh how he loved going to Fair Hill.

FAIR HILL GAITED GET-AWAY TURNS 20 !!!!

This October marked the twentieth year of the Fair Hill Gated Get Away in which the Chesapeake Plantation Walking Horse Club gathers for four days of riding, fun and fellowship. Jacquie Cowan has been present for every one of these wonderful excursions and has been responsible for planning and coordinating every one of them I believe. This year’s event was held on October 8th through the 11th

and was perfectly planned. The weather cooperated nicely with a mild rain event Friday evening after dark which ushered in cool fall temperatures and plenty of sunshine on Saturday and Sunday.

You can’t beat the wonderful trails at Fair Hill and when the weather cooperates as it did this year, the riding was all you could ask for. Mary and I were able to get in 14.5 hours in the saddle and still did not take in all the trails. In addition to the great riding there were obstacle challenges set up adjacent to the campground to challenge your horsemanship. There was also a pumpkin carving contest with fantastic prizes, and a small but enthusiastic Halloween horse parade. The pot luck dinner and campfire entertained everyone and of course, a side trip to the Oxford, PA Outback Outlet store is a tradition. The 20% off Fair Hill participant discount always comes in handy!

On Sunday a beautiful sunrise was followed by Cowboy church and of course one more ride before packing up for the trip home. This was my fourth and Mary’s third Fair Hill ride and we were so pleased that we were no longer the rookies! Several folks were attending for the first time and I remembered the excitement of my first trip as I listened to them rave about the Fair Hill experience.

Next year’s event has already been scheduled for October 6th through the 9th, so there is plenty of time to make plans to attend this exciting equine weekend. You owe it to your horse to ride Fair Hill at least once. If you do, I think you’ll be hooked!

Pictured here are the 1st and 2nd place winners of the annual Parade Contest --- The Mighty Warrior Kirk Taggart ready to charge on his wife Terry's TWH Katie and Slick the Big Bad Wolf in Grandma's Clothes loves on Little Red Riding Ghoul (Jacquie Cowan).

Thank you Jesse & Mary Bowman of Miskimon, Virginia for the article and for conducting Cowboy Church again – as always, your passion for the horse-human relationship touched out hearts.

FA – LA- LA- LA – LA … DECK the HORSES with LIGHTS and HOLLY

The 70 degree weaather made for an unseasonably fun trail ride before we hit the streets to serenade the Cowans' neighbors of Indian Creek Estates. We even cut the ride short to head back to Jacquie's house to cool the horses off and decorate them for our annual Carrolling On Horseback. Notice the short sleeves ?!?! We did not need to heat the spiced and spiked apple cider this year. We are a huge hit every year – some neighbors invite friends over and others bring carrots out for the

horses. Club members and the neighborhood were all so generous as we collected 185 pounds of food and a truck bed load of warm outer wear for the Anne Arundel County Food Bank and Homeless Services, who may join us next year for the festivities. Thank you Sharon and Kirk for providing the hay ride truck so those carrollers without horses could ride along. Thank you Rayann for knocking on doors and gathering the donations. And thank you everyone for kicking off the holiday in such a fun and wonderful way!

Sunday hunting has continued to spread across the state, county by county. As advocates for the horse industry and for preserving the right of horseback riders and others to participate in outdoor recreation at least one weekend day per week without concern for adverse interactions with hunters, the Maryland Horse Council has had a long standing policy of opposing any bill that allows for Sunday hunting. It is important to know this is not an anti-hunting campaign. In fact, the MHC has been working with the Department of Natural Resources to offer alternative means to deer management. One of those is to establish commercial sale of deer meat harvested by approved crop damage permit holders. This is an equity and economic issue for all twho wish to spend time safely in Maryland's great outdoors.

The Md Horse Coucil employs a lobbyist to keep up with what is coming up. Each Friday he reviews upcoming bills for impact on the equestrian community. Not just on hunting – others may affect taxes, land management, insurance, etc. Then the Council sends out eblasts for us to stay informed and take action. Throughout the legislative season we will call upon each and every one of you to take vitally important action.

A little history … In 1999 Sunday Hunting on private and public lands was introduced in the Maryland General Assembly. Equestrians, birders, hikers, bikers and more banded together to defeat. Then in 2003, efforts won a few Sundays for hunting in certain counties. In 2014 more Sundays in more counties creating a patchwork effect that was hard to decipher. Anne Arundel County equestrians defeated the bill that sought all 16 Sundays of deer season. The 2015 legislative year was frought with multiple bills that would allow hunting on private and in some cases designated public land in numerous counties. Some sought to include Sundays in more seasons than just deer, and to expand the current seasons. A mass of emails, phone callls and testimonies encouraged the Baltimore County Delegation to withdraw support and more bills were withdrawn immediately following the testimony of a 7-person panel representing the Horse Council. By end of the 2015 Legislative year all bills pertaining to Sunday Hunting were withdrawn or defeated.

There are plenty more legislative actions to come that will have impact on equine enthusiasts and professionals. So after you have enjoyed the EXPO come meet other equestrians from around the State, hear what is expected for this 2016 Legislative year and what you can do to protect your equine passion and properties. Chesapeake has been an Association member forever with Jacquie as our representative.

SORE NO MORE...At the federal level, the PAST Act (Prevent All Soring Tactics) seeks to sure up the federal Horse Protection Act to stop the pain and inhumanity of soring horses for the show ring once and for all. It will ban the use of chains around the ankles and the big stacked pads of the Big Lick horse. It will close enforcement loopholes and strengthen the penalties for soring. Although this practice is rarely found in our area it is still prevalent in the more southern states. This issue does impact us as we are commonly lumped in with those “awful people” who do not love and respect the naturally gaited and trained Tennessee Walking Horse, Racking Horse and Spotted Saddle Horse as we do.

Horse organizations, gaited and non, joined forces across the Country to get this passed. Our Chesapeake Club introduced a resolution to the Maryland Horse Council, which was unanimously passed to support the PAST Act becoming the first state council to do so. We became a model for others to follow. The baton was picked up by professional organizations as well like the American Veterinary Association. Priscila Presley, Michael Keaton, Katherine Heigl and Willie Nelson have joined a growing list of celebrities calling on Congress to protect horses from soring! #BantheBigLick". We are proud that our Maryland federal representatives are also on the co-sponsoring list.Sadly, The PAST Act was held hostage in DC by the partisan bickering even though there were more than enough co-sponsors on both sides of the aisle to successfully pass this bill to further strengthen the Federal Horse Protection Act. So here we go again. More information can be found at http://www.humanesociety.org/issues/tenn_walking_horses . Valerie Pringle will be at the Horse Council meetig to give an update, and we have another Chesapeake friend leading the charge – Keith Dane helped us plan our very first gaited horse show way back when ----

We Are Horse People and WE VOTE !!!!

A simple phone call, email, or fax to your Legislator can make all the difference for fellow equestrians and our horses..For more information on these hot topics visit the noted websites and/or give Jacquie a shout, who has been lobbying the last several years with other industry leaders. You too can make an even bigger difference by attending hearings – you

can speak your mind, or just be another face to count and influence – numbers do matter!

MEET ANITA HOWE … our gaited clinician for this year's EXPOAnita grew up around stock type horses although her immediate family did not own or ride. Like so many of us, she never outgrew that little girl horse phenomenon. 18 years ago she bought her first gaited horse and fell in love with not just their smooth gait, but their docile temperament, intelligence, and ease of training. Over time she sought out experience and knowledge so she could go on to share her enthusiasm . As a trainer and clinician she avoided the typical industry shortcuts and developed her sense of sound horsemanship for the horse's inherent natural gait. This leads to the presservation of the horse's soundness, comfort and longevity.

Anita's goal for all of us at the EXPO is that we walk away with “...a small amount of patience and persistence, we too can go home and get on our own horses to begin building communications to achieve an authentic natural gait without the use of mechanical gimmicks or shortcuts”.

Be sure to catch Anita's clinical sessions on Saturday and Sunday – she will be working with some of our Club members and their trail horses. Anita will be hanging out in our Booth 1409-1410 otherwise and looks forward to chatting.
