Learning Object ivesAt the end of this course, participants will be able to:
• Demonstrate understanding of guidelines for breast cancer screening; • Explain the importance of Advance Care Planning in an aging population and the critical role of Primary Care; • Evaluate the advantages of methadone, buprenorphine and extended
release naltrexone treatment; • Utilize the new abnormal uterine bleeding terminology to help guide
appropriate therapy and referral; • Assess common treatment plans for hypertension; • Illustrate the effectiveness of exercise for prevention and treatment
of heart disease; • Summarize the efficacy, side effects and cost of diabetes medication
classes currently available; • Identify the risks and pitfalls of prescribing chronic opioid therapy; • Describe new technologies in treating structural heart disease; • Recommend a pathway for the evaluation and diagnosis of melanoma
in the Primary Care setting; • Summarize the “Choosing Wisely” lists for Geriatrics and Palliative
Medicine, with a review of relevant cases and common errors; • Separate fact from fiction in the debate over menopausal hormone
therapy; • Screen for alcohol use disorders with simple, quantity-based questions;• Support sobriety through medication management; • Use motivational interviewing techniques in the 15-minute visit; • Discuss recent developments in lipid treatment guidelines; • Recognize the diagnostic tools and treatments for hyperthyroidism; • Recognize the common upper extremity nerve entrapment disorders; • Discuss the evolving role of selective estrogen receptor modulators in
treating common gynecologic problems;
• Describe the current controversy over uterine tissue extraction during minimally invasive surgery;
• Recognize currently accepted screening recommendations for colorectal cancer;
• Formulate management strategies for chronic back pain;
• Assess treatment options for chronic kidney disease;
• Integrate approach to addiction with prenatal care;
• Appraise a parsimonious diagnostic workup and treatment plan for polycystic ovary syndrome;
• Identify evidence-based workup for an adrenal and pituitary masses;
• Outline a Primary Care approach to the diagnosis of dementia.
