ASC Conference: A Re-energizing ExperienceHello, and welcome to the 49th Annual Associated Schools of Construction Conference. Thank you

for your interest in ASC and for your desire to find ways to improve your teaching, research and

programs in each of your institutions. I have always found the ASC Annual Conference to be a time to

gain new insights and especially to renew acquaintances and meet new people. Members of ASC are

always willing to share their ideas and help others with curriculum, collaboration on research and

with ways to improve their programs. I always come away from the conferences feeling re-energized

and inspired to apply new concepts. The most rewarding aspect of the conference is my association

with great people.

We appreciate the administrators, faculty and staff at Cal Poly in San Luis Obispo (SLO) for hosting

our Annual Conference. They have spent many hours planning and preparing for a successful event.

Special thanks goes to Al Hauck, SLO chair, who submitted the proposal to host the conference;

Barbara Jackson, conference coordinator; Jessica Frazier, lead administrative coordinator for the

conference; and Jenay Reynolds-Sibbach, conference website developer and administrative assistant.

I also want to thank members of the ASC Board of Directors (please see page 5), who have worked

to ensure a successful conference, and particularly Brian Moore, who coordinated the conference

schedule with Cal Poly, SLO, and Larry Grosse, who did so much behind the scenes to make things

run smoothly. Our membership provided many hours of service, which enables the organization

to run effectively.

I hope you take advantage of the committee sessions this year. We have expanded the committee

meetings to include discussions and presentations of topics of interest and learning for all of us.

Please take the opportunity to meet some of the people who are attending for the first time and

welcome them. This is an opportunity to get to know others and learn from each other. I hope you

A Welcome Opportunity to Host Friends, ColleaguesDear ASC Colleagues and Friends,

On behalf of the students, faculty and staff of the Construction Management (CM)Department, we

welcome you to Cal Poly and California’s Central Coast for the 49th International Conference of the

Associated Schools of Construction. It is hard to believe that I have been attending these events for

30 years, but that realization improves when I remember that some of my ASC friendships go back

that far as well!

The CM Department at Cal Poly is part of a unique College of Architecture and Environmental

Design that we share with departments in architecture, architectural engineering, city and

regional planning, and landscape architecture. On Thursday, we look forward to introducing you

to this educational environment and the facilities that support our curriculum. Four years ago, we

introduced new CM curriculum in which the studies of methods, materials, estimating, scheduling

and contracts are integrated into labs that are dedicated to each sector of the industry. Students in

each lab have sole access to that simulated office space for the quarter, and they learn to practice

their profession through intensive project-based learning.

Two keynote presentations and one VDC Workshop will address the conference’s theme, “Riding

the Wave: Embracing Virtual Design and Construction,” a critical area in our program offerings. In

addition, more than 70 peer reviewed faculty papers will be presented, as well as workshops and

software demonstrations. And don’t miss the committee meetings and vendor displays in your

areas of interest. The festivities will end with the Awards Banquet on Friday and the Business

Meeting on Saturday.

Finally, we want to express our gratitude to the generous support of the sponsors listed in this

program who have made this possible. Without their support, the required registration fees

would prevent many of us from participating. Also, as those of you who have planned any major

event know, the real thanks goes to all staff who make this happen. I want to express my sincere

appreciation to Professor Barbara Jackson, who served as conference director, Professor Phil Barlow,

who coordinated the paper presentation schedule, and staff members Jes Frazier, who so ably

coordinated this team effort, Jenay Reynolds-Sibbach, who created web pages and signage, and

We hope the program will meet your professional expectations, that you will have an opportunity to

Hospitality and Presenter Prep RoomFor your convenience, we have

reserved a Hospitality and Presenter Prep Room on the lower level of the hotel just behind the elevators.

This room is equipped with a projector and screen if you want to “test-run” your presentation. We will also have a copier/printer on hand for your limited use during the conference.

This exciting conference event, made possible by our Conference Sponsor, DPR Construction, may prove to be the most memorable event of the week, although we’re sure there will be many.

This year we are adding some FUN and CHALLENGE into the mix. As faculty members, we are accustomed to devel-oping exercises and activities for our students; however, it’s not too often that we get to participate in such events. Here’s your chance, and ours.

The event will be complemented with a wine and appetizer reception, which should lighten up the atmosphere and add even more fun and enjoyment. As in the past, dinner will be “on your own” afterward. Check your Cal Poly folder for restaurant descriptions.

Subject Matter Experts Forum Friday, April 12, 2-3:30 p.m. Zinfandel Room

In this interactive session, the Subject Matter Expert Information Exchange Forum will be introduced.

This online resource is set up in a ‘Wiki’ environment. Topic areas are devel-oped and moderated by ASC members and provide current state-of-the-art advice in construction education curriculum for faculty members who are developing new courses or are updating current courses. Topics include both construction subjects and pedagogical techniques.

After introduction of the website, time is scheduled to break into subject matter groups to engage in discussions and share ideas. Bring a laptop if you want to contribute to the online forum in real-time during this session. Visit the website at http://www.ascweb.org/asc-sme.

Paper Presentations Wednesday-Friday, April 10-12

See Paper Schedule on page 25 for times. We are very pleased to feature 73

paper presentations, lengthened to 25 minutes each, including Q & A. Most sessions are comprised of three paper presentations, generally followed by a 15-30 minute networking break. We did our best to combine similar topic papers in each session. We encourage you to support your fellow faculty and colleagues by attending as many presentations as you can and engaging in the intellectually stim-ulating discussions that are likely to ensue.

Committee Meetings and Forums Wednesday-Friday, April 10-12

See schedule on page 8 for times. We have scheduled six committee

meetings and one forum during the conference. These meetings are open to all ASC members, and the Committee Chairs welcome and encourage your participation. Education Committee Chair Jim Sullivan reports that his committee will feature a guest speaker. Patrick O’Sullivan, Cal Poly’s director of Academic Technology, will make a short presentation on leveraging technology to support and measure intended student learning outcomes. Small and large group discussions will follow on the topic. The Education Committee meets Friday from 8:30-10:10 a.m. Please contact the other Committee Chairs for meeting details.

You will find them in convenient locations on the lower level of the hotel, in and around all the conference activity locations. After experiencing BIMStorm® you will be escorted by Cal Poly CM students on a brief walking tour across campus to the Construction Innovations Center (CIC) to enjoy lunch, sponsored by ProCore. You will be treated to an informal but hearty buffet meal on the plaza in front of the Simpson Strong-Tie Materials Demonstration Lab (SST). After lunching at your leisure, you’ll have plenty of time to pick from a menu of activities that includes guided tours of the CIC building and its Integrated Labs, a visit to the Poster Sessions happening on the mezzanine level of the SST, and attending your ASC Regional Business Meeting. No worries – we’ve scheduled enough time for you to enjoy lunch and participate in all three activities. At 2:30 p.m., the buses will be ready to transport you back to the hotel, where Paper

We are very pleased to feature 15 projects in this year’s Research-in-Progress Poster Session. The posters will be displayed on the mezzanine level of the Simpson Strong-Tie Materials Demonstration Lab. Please visit any time during the Lunch and Leisure time noted above and support the faculty who are exploring a variety of interesting topics. They welcome your comments and are eager to connect with other ASC faculty who share similar research interests. See page 16 for more details. Regional Business Meetings Thursday, April 11, 1-2:30 p.m.

As previously noted, all eight ASC Regions will hold their Annual Business Meetings on the Cal Poly campus after the Lunch and Leisure activities. These meet-ings will be held in various lab spaces and conference rooms within the CIC. Your particular Regional Meeting location is identified on the Cal Poly map you will be handed Thursday morning upon getting on the bus. All ASC members are invited and encouraged to attend their Regional Meeting and participate in the business matters of the ASC.

After a long day of business it’s time to unwind and have fun before you head off to your “on your own” dinner destination. Kimon Onuma: Pushing the LimitsPresident and Founder, Onuma, Inc.

For more than two decades Kimon Onuma, FAIA, has promoted integrated processes driven

by architectural knowledge. Onuma, Inc. is a team of architects and computer programmers

using advanced processes and custom tools to spearhead a building industry revolution. As

an architect and software developer, Kimon is in a unique position to implement tools and

processes. Real-world projects offer insight to better provide consultation for clients seeking

to become more BIM proficient.

Kimon has worked in architecture for more than 26 years. He established Onuma & Associates

23 years ago and incorporated Onuma, Inc. in 2005. Not many firms pushed the limits of Building

Information Modeling (BIM) on architectural projects 18 years ago. In 1994, Kimon’s firm was one of

the first to use BIM on large-scale U.S. government facilities. In 2008, Onuma represented the owner

on the new Department of Homeland Security Headquarters project in Washington, D.C.

Recent developments include supporting a sustainable processes in design by combining real-time

energy data with real-time BIM and linking it to Geographic Information Systems (GIS), an industry

first. Using cloud computing, Kimon received a 2008 American Institute of Architect (AIA) Technology

in Architectural Practice (TAP) award for BIMStorm LAX. BIMStorm brings together industry

specialists using cloud technologies to connect BIM, GIS, smart grid and energy.

“BIMStorm LAX was a 24-hour real-time BIM collaborative event that became a ‘Woodstock’ for the

building industry,” he says. “This unprecedented global charrette brought 133 design professionals

from 11 countries together in a collaborative environment to work on large sections of Los Angeles,

creating designs for 420 buildings totaling over 55 million square feet.”

Kimon serves on the board of directors for buildingSMART and on the AIA TAP Knowledge

Community Advisory Board. He is the 2013 chair of AIA TAP.

CALIFORNIA IS A BIG STATE, WITH BIGGER CHALLENGES.

The California Community College System (CCC) serves

2.75 million students at 112 California locations in 5,200

buildings and is the largest system of public higher education

in the world. The State’s budget crisis and rising energy costs

creates a sense of urgency to find solutions right now for ‘doing

more with less.’

No single organization or software solution can manage this

huge puzzle. This session will show how the state is managing

this massive program by connecting their entire database to

Building Information Models (BIM) and Geographic Information

Systems. This effort was awarded the 2011 FIATECH CETI Award

for Real-Time Project and Facility Management, Coordination,

and Control.

For a statewide system like this it is critical to manage the

data in a neutral open format across many tools to allow for

data to be accessible to those that need it. At a very rapid

pace a range of projects ranging from master plans, to new

construction are supported by this approach. Each building

is available at varying “Levels of Development” (LOD) and

accessible as BIM & GIS in open standards such as COBie, Web

services, IFC, and XML. It would not make economic sense to

wait for all 5,200 buildings to be in a high LOD before the data

can be used for decision making.

The CCC welcomes others to connect in and add value to this

system. Many different teams using a multitude of tools have

connected to the CCC data. Some projects are coming in from

detailed design/build BIMs. Others are coming in from master

planning projects. Several districts have live sensors and

automation systems connected to the CCC data for operations

and maintenance. Some districts within the CCC are developing

standards of what type of data is needed from BIM for

operations and maintenance.

There are ongoing discussions with the utility companies

statewide to connect to utility data and work with district data.

Several districts have overlaid energy data, devices, sensors

and controls. Real time information enables unprecedented

capabilities of benchmarking, sharing best energy management

practices to benefit from existing utility incentives. Case studies

include the energy management system at Pasadena City

College, and examples from other districts. The complexity of

data that used to be trapped in disconnected systems made it

very difficult to visualize in a coherent way. The new unified

interface now simplifies this and allows energy benchmarking

and assessment information across multiple buildings and

campuses from many sources on multiple platforms such as PCs,

smartphones and tablets.

This interactive session will demonstrate how all of this came

together, and although there are technological, cultural and

legal hurdles to overcome, a staggering amount of connections

have been made in a short period of time. The opportunity

for builders, architects, engineers and many other service and

information providers to collaborate has never been greater. This

is BIM and beyond! Don’t miss it!

Rex Miller, Thought Leader Senior Partner, TAG Consulting

Rex Miller is a nationally respected futurist, consultant, speaker and A/E/C industry expert. His

recent book, “The Commercial Real Estate Revolution,” describes the dysfunction of an industry

struggling with old paradigms and behavior. The book provides nine transforming keys for lowering

cost, cutting waste and driving change in this $1.4 trillion industry.

In 2006, Rex formed and led the Mindshift Consortium as a catalyst for change in the Architecture,

Engineering and Construction industry. They won the 2009 CoreNet Global Innovator of the Year

Award for demonstrating the value of trust-based collaborative projects over traditional low-bid

approaches. When the work was completed in 2009, the AIA had six documented trust-based

projects. Today there are more than 100.

In 2011, Rex launched a new industry change initiative, case4space, based on the premise that

design and place matter. “Companies focus too much on the cost reduction side without harnessing

the value creation potential,” he says. “Workplace engagement still remains under 30 percent. The

case4space initiative aims to change the thinking about the value of the workplace.”

In his first book, “The Millennium Matrix,” published in 2005, Rex introduces an innovative historical

view describing the power of changing media on the transformation of culture and the organizations

within the culture. It describes the new leadership models necessary to navigate change and lead a

rising Millennial generation. The Millennium Matrix outlines the new leadership and organizational

paradigms for a digital world.

Rex joined TAG Consulting as a senior partner in early 2010. He leads the company’s A/E/C practice,

Strengths-based leadership training, professional sports consulting, and he serves as their resident

futurist. He is a certified CoreClarity trainer and a member of the National Speakers Association.

Rex Miller’s Topic: ‘How to Lead When the Students Are Smarter Than You!’

NOBODY DENIES THE DISRUPTIVE CHANGES taking place

in the AEC industry and in society at large. We have

digital immigrants leading and teaching digital natives

into a future unfamiliar to both. This is the first time in history

the emerging generation knows more about how the new world

works than those in charge.

Despite gains in technologies like Virtual Design and Construction

the industry remains one of the least efficient, conflict-ridden

sectors of the economy. There is an estimated $350 to $500

billion of waste and non-value added activity each year. It is

the only non-agricultural industry that has consistently lost

productivity since 1964.

Education is struggling with its own disruptive shift following the

same steep trough of diminishing returns that mass media has

experienced. Education is … a media-based institution. It will,

therefore, succumb to the same laws that follow the dramatic

drop in cost and easy access of its primary product-knowledge.

Education’s pain may be buffered by the inertia of its massive

support system, legislation, tax support and political clout.

However, any objective outsider recognizes that raising taxes,

tuition and onboarding more teachers will not solve the chronic

issues plaguing education. The traditional model is broken.

The fate of both construction and education are linked to this

shift from Gutenberg to Google.

AEC expert and futurist Rex Miller will take you to the center of

these seismic shifts and provide causal links that will surprise

and enlighten. The new rules for success offer new potential

for educators to regain relevance and leadership in an era of

continual turbulence.

The presentation will explore new practices like deep cross-

functional integration and collaboration. It will make a case

that educators must lead the cultivation of new attitudes

that recognize we live and work within a complex network of

stakeholders. Educators must be at the forefront of dispelling

the conventional notion that it costs more to build high

performing sustainable buildings or that safety and efficiency

will always be at odds.

Fortunately, there are hopeful signs for both construction and

education, as fiction writer William Gibson proclaims, “The

future is already here — it’s just not very evenly distributed.”

Some of the best performing firms are recognizing that a business

can do well, very well, by doing good IF an integrated stakeholder

philosophy and practice is adopted. Students trained in their

traditional silo’d disciplines that focus on the technical functions

of their profession will not be able to function in this new world.

How can educators maintain relevance and continue to deliver

the value that AEC firms desperately need? How can universities

create a compelling vision that what they offer is both industry

changing and world changing? If educators are unwilling to adapt

quickly, the AEC industry will create its own solutions.

There is one thing certain about this new era. “If you don’t like

change, you’ll like irrelevance even less,” says General Shinsecki.

Rebholz Nominated for Lifetime Achievement Award F. EUGENE REBHOLZ received a Bachelor of Architectural Engineering Degree from Iowa State

University in 1966, a Master of Engineering Degree from Penn State University in 1969 and an

M.B.A. from Bradley University in 1976. He began teaching in 1969, and

after retiring in 2008, was named an associate professor emeritus at Bradley University.

Gene is a registered professional engineer in Illinois and worked as an estimator,

superintendent, engineer and structural designer. He also served as a consultant to a number

of insurance companies, firms and individuals in areas of collapse, damage, workmanship

and construction recommendations. He received the Outstanding Faculty Award for the

Department of Civil Engineering and Construction twice. He was active in various professional and

service organizations.

Gene served the Associated Schools of Construction (ASC) for many years as the national president,

vice president, secretary, treasurer and as regional director, and in numerous committee activities. A

member of Sigma Lambda Chi, he served as its national vice president and as a local chapter advisor.

Some of his most amusing and enjoyable contributions to the ASC conferences were his resolutions,

Sigma Lambda Chi international construction honor society was founded at Michigan State University in 1949. It became a member of the Association of College Honor Societies in 1991.

The Society’s purpose – to recognize outstanding students in construction – offers those students the opportunity to be recognized locally and internationally for their academic accomplishments as construction majors.

Membership in Sigma Lambda Chi is based upon scholarship, leadership, a keen interest in the field of construction, and the betterment of the construction profession. Members of Sigma Lambda Chi make a commitment to include quality construction in whatever is built, use materials wisely and efficiently to guarantee their availability to future generations, and to carry out endeavors with high ethical standards. Sigma Lambda Chi is also known as the Society of Leaders in Construction.

Overall objectives include the rendering of service to the field of construction, the development of good relations among academia, industry and the public, and the recognition of outstanding professionals in construction and allied fields.

Hearst CastleWilliam Randolph Hearst told

architect Julia Morgan in 1927 that he wanted to built “a little something” on the California coast. Eighteen years later, Casa Grande (commonly called Hearst Castle) crowned La Cuesta Encantada, Hearst’s “Enchanted Hill” above tiny San Simeon. It’s a 165-room Moorish castle with 127 acres of gardens, terraces, pools and walkways, furnished with Spanish and Italian antiques and art, flanked by three large guest houses. In its heyday, Hearst Castle had a zoo, tennis courts and two magnificent swimming pools.
