Dear Classmates: Welcome to our Twenty Year Class Reunion. It is hard to believe that it’s been twenty years since we roamed the halls of Ridgeway High School. It’s been twenty years since we first watched movies like Top Gun, Ferris Bueller’s Day Off, The Breakfast Club, and Pretty in Pink. We think that growing up in the 80’s was such a wonderful time and our lives were much more simple back then. We rarely thought of things like terrorism and bombings back in 1986. Times have definitely changed, so when we have an opportunity like this to get together again, renew old friendships and remember the fun times, we should take full advantage of it. This weekend will be a lot of fun and we are really happy that you chose to attend our class reunion. Once again, we thank everyone for their effort in not only being here, but for helping us find our classmates. Through the internet and word of mouth, we were able to find over half our class. That is spectacular! This booklet will make it much easier for us to find everybody in 2011 when we have our 25th Reunion. If between now and then your telephone number, email address, or regular address changes, please let us know so we can update our information and be able to find each other for future reunions and events. We hope that you enjoy reading about our classmates and hope that now that we have this information, many of us will make an effort to stay in touch more. It is so easy to get caught up in our everyday lives and lose touch with old friends and classmates. The one thing that we will always have in common is that we were part of the Class of 1986 at Ridgeway High School. Whether it’s an email or a random call, talking about the 80’s or talking about your children, or just saying hello to someone, catching up will put a smile on your face.

Children: Emerson Jane (22 months) and Elias (11, stepson) My most significant experience(s) since graduating from Ridgeway has/have been: Creating a family with my husband and stepson – and welcoming our wonderful daughter into that family Other thoughts/comments/memories of Ridgeway: Mr. Black threatening to suspend me for leaving school to run to Stephanie Spector’s house to change my outfit! Leaving school to work the lunch hour at Hunan Palace – although, Angie Tucker worked most of the lunch shifts, which left me with disappointed diners who would say things like “Oh, we thought Angie was working today… maybe we’ll go to Houlihan’s instead.” I have so many funny and silly memories of Ridgeway, but I also those have life-long friendships that you really only make in the 4th or 5th grade. Where have you lived since high school graduation? Rome GA, Memphis, Santa Barbara CA, and now Memphis again (for the last 6 weeks!!!) What are some of your hobbies and interests? I enjoy anything a 2 year old might – reading Seuss, coloring, running (2yr old in stroller)… I wish I had time for more. My classmates would be surprised to know I: Still don’t have any clue what is really going on in a football game. Sorry, guys.

At a restaurant My most significant experience(s) since graduating from Ridgeway has/have been: I had the opportunity to be on the big screen with Joaquin Phoenix and Reese Witherspoon as an extra in the movie Walk the Line. I played one of the Folsom Prison inmates. Other thoughts/comments/memories of Ridgeway: I remember Mr. Post would demonstrate the properties of the measurements of decibels and the Law of Gravity in his chemistry or physics classes. In other words, when he found a student asleep, he would take his metal rod from the chalk board eraser tray and drop (Law of Gravity) it on the floor close to the asleep student’s desk which made a sound (decibels) and woke up the student. Where have you lived since high school graduation? Memphis, TN What are some of your hobbies and interests? Solving Sudoku and cryptogram puzzles, and participating in plays at Rhodes College. I am always reminded of high school when:I found out that I signed up for a class which consisted of about 110 students. It was Sgt. Barret’s Study Hall class. Sgt. Barret seldom took roll because there were too many students. The only room for that many students was the school auditorium.

My classmates would be surprised to know I: Since I was in Walk the Line, I can be linked to Kevin Bacon in 3 degrees. It is the Six Degrees to Kevin Bacon game. I was in Walk the Line with Joaquin Phoenix, who was in U-Turn with Sean Penn, who was in Mystic River with Kevin Bacon. Diverse college experience with two BS, one in Architecture and one in Civil Engineering, and a Masters in Civil Engineering. I was the lead civil engineer on the Fed Ex Forum here in Memphis Recently named Chief Project Management Officer for Tetra Tech, which is in the Top 10 Engineering Consulting firms in the country (#8 right now). Moving to Denver, CO to assume this role. Been with the company almost 9 years now. I love my job and look forward to work each day – that’s probably pretty rare. Other thoughts/comments/memories of Ridgeway: I know I mentioned this in a prior communication, but my fondest memory from high school was getting Brad Elster to sit on soft serve ice cream during lunch. Also, none of my achievements since high school rival this – it is the greatest achievement of my life and possibly one of the greatest achievements of the 20th Century (just ahead of the Polio vaccine). Coach Carr’s American History Class – particularly when he demonstrated his past experience in the “stuntman profession” and threw himself backwards out of his chair and managed to (somewhat) look like he was not in great pain. We spent a lot of time just talking about life, the future, and other people. Through back a lot of adult beverages with Jon Porter, David Lewis, Robert Shearin, the Landers (not David) and many members the football, basketball, and baseball teams. Appreciate the fellas picking me up from Whitehaven everyday and taking

me to school until I got my car. The ’77 yellow Plymouth Fury. Coach Winters was my biggest influence and mentor. Bill Van Cleave made the winning shot for us to win the city basketball championship, I think. That was great. I had so many good times and memories its hard to list. “Bucky” that old guy who worked the concession stand at school was a trip. Where have you lived since high school graduation? Other thoughts/comments/memories of Ridgeway: Looking back, things have changed SO much … the times have changed, but mostly people have changed. I am fortunate to have stayed close with some very dear friends. We have gone through boyfriends, marriages, births, and birthdays; none of this would have happened had I not gone to RHS and met these people. Where have you lived since high school graduation? Right here in good ‘ole Memphis, TN. What are some of your hobbies and interests? I love to go to concerts, hang with friends/family, watch my son play hockey & lacrosse, but my absolute FAVORITE hobby would be cooking. I am always reminded of high school when: I drop my son off at school everyday (at RHS) My classmates would be surprised to know I: actually got married and had a son when I said time and time again that “I will never get married and have kids.”

Other thoughts/comments/memories of Ridgeway: Pep rallies were actually fun working sound/lights for RHS productions playing sports going to football games spending weekends with great friends eating what our cafeteria produced for lunch every day for 6 years. Where have you lived since high school graduation? Tuscaloosa, AL; Charlotte, NC; Chapel Hill, NC; Miami, FL; New York, NY; London, England; Darien, CT; and now Nashville, TN since 2005. After almost 20 years out of state for school and career, we think we are here to stay! What are some of your hobbies and interests? Alabama season football tickets coaching the kids sports teams guest teaching at UNC-Chapel Hill and Vanderbilt renovating our 60 year old home in Nashville. I am always reminded of high school when: I visit Memphis for any reason and drive by old haunts. Anytime I go to the Rendezvous (the basement), the river or the Peabody. Anytime I see my old friends from Ridgeway (you know who you are). Anytime I see

someone with a mullet. And, anytime I see a 1977 Toyota Corolla. My classmates would be surprised to know I: Was at work on September 11, 2001 one block from the World Trade Center in New York City and saw everything in person. Other thoughts/comments/memories of Ridgeway: Trey Dean, “Bulldog,” Jimmy Bell, Roane Tucker, Jamie Reese, Billy Palmer, Larry Taylor and crew torturing Mr. Henning during 8th grade spelling class. That was my first year at Ridgeway, and nearly all my classes that year were with that group of folks. They were hard core. It was like one of those movies with Morgan Freeman and Michelle Pfeiffer about public schools, except without the soundtrack. Jimmy Bell had this trick where he would strafe the whole room – and everyone in it – with a 15 foot spray of spit, like from a water pistol. Yikes.

We live on some acreage south of Nashville, and I spend a lot of my free time taking care of the place. I’ve planted nearly 100 trees since we’ve been there, including about 25 different species of native hardwoods. If/when time permits, I still take pictures of planets, nebulae, etc. through one of several telescopes I own. I did that back in high school, too. Not sure if anyone knew that. I am always reminded of high school: Whenever I see a food fight depicted on a kids’ show on television, I’m transported back to a moment during the fall of 1985, when Houston Chaffin chucked the first egg at the end of an ill-conceived program in the gym involving sack races, egg relays, etc., that was designed to whip up school spirit or something. It was the opening shot in a melee that led to the closest thing to a food fight you’ll ever see in real life. Other thoughts/comments/memories of Ridgeway: Well, anyone who knows me from high school knows I wasn't the most involved student. I'm still amazed to this day that from about 10th grade on I only averaged about 3 days a week at school and still graduated! I also accomplished this without my parents ever knowing. It's still shocking to my mother to hear stories of things I used to get away with. I know my son is only 4, but if he EVER skips school like I did, Lord help him. Other thoughts/comments/memories of Ridgeway: After spending the first three years of high school at Lausanne, where I was very unhappy, Ridgeway was like a breath of fresh air. My memories were erased or “drowned”, the years following my dad’s death. BUT, my most vivid earlier memories are of Julie Smith and Karla Willingham. Their parents practically raised me 9th and 10th grade! Karla, I believe I tasted every batch of BBQ sauce your dad made, and your mom always made me feel like one of the family. Other thoughts/comments/memories of Ridgeway: I love the friends that I made there. I also remember being paddled three times in one day. I think I was innocent of one of the charges. The cover of my yearbook is upside down in relation to the pages inside which seemed oddly appropriate when I received it. I still have it. Larry Eastwood and I met for margaritas at 6AM one morning before school. School seemed to take forever that day. Ms VanVelsor, the Spanish teacher, yelled at me in class and my nose started bleeding. A teacher told some kid to copy something out of a book as punishment for talking to me during class. I told him to copy it on a Xerox machine which he did. The following day the teacher was pissed and really punished him for being a smart ass. That kid never spoke to me again. Walker Wellford got me arrested in New Orleans for stealing a cowboy hat off a very large and angry man. One weekend during school, Karin Matheson and I caught a bunch a fish in a lake. She took the fish in a bucket to a Chinese restaurant and traded it for several dinners. I never knew how she did that. I turned in my senior photo but it never made it on that framed picture in the hallway with the rest of the class. I always thought it was intentional. Walker Wellford saved my life when I almost accidentally flipped off the

side of a cruise ship in the middle of the night. He’s cool that way. Once, Leslie Fortner dumped a drink on my head at Newby’s. I bet I didn’t deserve it. Allison Norcross took me to a Washington Redskins football game. Karin Matheson’s dad gave Walker Wellford and me a summer job working in a warehouse. Walker got violently ill and threw up everywhere and left. I had to clean it up. He still thinks that’s funny. Where have you lived since high school graduation?Oxford, Nashville and mainly Memphis. I have very fond memories of the newspaper staff and the Ridgeway parking lot after football games. Of course, memorizing Chaucer’s Canterbury Tales; Mr. Rainey’s “lectures” about frou-frou prom dresses (among other interesting topics); decorating the halls for homecoming week (I believe we took 1st place as sophomores, which was quite an accomplishment). Where have you lived since high school graduation? I went to college (Univ. of Illinois, Champaign, IL) and then moved back home when I graduated without a job. I have lived in the Memphis area ever since. What are some of your hobbies and interests? I remember one time in class he asked us why we thought red lipstick was considered sexy. Well, I'm sure all of us were thinking the same thing, but were too embarrassed to say to what exactly we thought red lips are comparable!!! Of course it was obvious that Mr. Raney was enjoying this query immensely, and how it made us squirm! Anyway, I think it was Graham B. or Bill V. who finally spoke up, and tried to put it as delicately as possible. I think he got the answer right!!! I have

laughed about that one for years!!! And of course the "alarm clock" Mr. Post fashioned from a metal rod! Oh, remember the big snow storm in 11th grade and how they dismissed us at 10:00 in the morning? I remember so many things, but I think the memories I mentioned are ones we probably all share. Where have you lived since high school graduation? Cincinnati, OH, Cleveland, OH, and now, unbelievably, in Cedar Rapids, IA What are some of your hobbies and interests? Volunteering is a big one. I volunteer my time and effort with the PTA, with Girl Scouts, at my kids' school, and with Junior League. I still play the piano almost every day; I was incredibly lucky to have inherited a grand piano from a very distant relative I did not know very well, and now I'm able to teach my kids how to play piano. I also enjoy making greeting cards, riding my bike, and, thanks to my kids, I've rediscovered the simple pleasures of coloring and swinging on the swing set! I am always reminded of high school when: I hear "Tainted Love" and all those other great 80's tunes, and whenever I wear red lipstick! My classmates would be surprised to know I: actually like living in Iowa. I always had the intention of getting the hell out of Memphis, but I guess I assumed I would remain in the south. When I moved to Cincinnati from Memphis, it was a real culture shock because people in Cincy are very rude, almost to the point of being mean-spirited. Interestingly, the people even further north in Cleveland were very decent, polite people. Anyway, never in a million years could I have imagined that I would live in Iowa, and although I was dragged here kicking and screaming, I have found that living here in this little midwestern town is a lot like being back in the south. Perfect strangers will look you in the eye as they say hello to you, hold the door open for you, and offer help. It feels like home.

I remember English class with Mr. Raney and can still recite Chaucer…although my grades didn’t reflect it, I learned a lot in his class. I remember being able to dial in a locker combination, exchange books and sprint from the first floor to a third floor class all in less than 60 seconds. I remember fuming as Mr. Rainey revealed the candid facts of the Memphis social structure—“ahhhh yes!” Where have you lived since high school graduation? Swing dancing (Lindy Hop), movies, reading, knitting, Japanese logic puzzles. Michelle Moore's air-splits--captured in the back of our 1986 yearbook. Mr. Raney telling us on the first day of English class that he would not remember us in a year so we should always introduce ourselves by saying who we are and how we know him. (That skill has blessed me in my secular and spiritual profession.) I remember staying at school until 10 and 11 at night for drama club rehearsals with Ms. Moore, waking up on Saturday mornings for city-wide drama competitions. Sharing the lead in the musical, "You're A Good Man Charlie Brown" with Karla Willingham because the drama teacher thought I was a better actress, but she Karla was CLEARLY the best songstress. I will appreciate my lunches with Tara Pegues, Sheri Price, Tiffany Fisher, and others. Being terrorized for three years by a female who thought I wanted her "man" but who will

remain nameless for fear she will have FLASHBACK. My most significant social memory is feeling that as a member of the "Cherokee Crew" I had to band with other Cherokee people to make it. Although we certainly respected and loved our RHS peers from other areas, we had been together at Cherokee and Sharpe elementary for many years and almost all of our parents were connected. When we hit Ridgeway in the 10th grade, we were all suddenly thrown into a strange environment many miles from our house where no one knew (and few cared) about who we were. We left an environment where teachers knew us and our families to spend days in a place where we were identified only by transcripts and test scores. So, we bonded together and tried to encourage each other to succeed. Where have you lived since high school graduation? Knoxville, TN (4 years), Bowling Green, OH (6 years), Oxford, MS (10 years) What are some of your hobbies and interests? Reading and Writing. Sounds incredibly boring to most, perhaps, but I read and write for entertainment, spiritual nourishment, and academic advancement. I am always reminded of high school when: I see the colors orange and blue mixed together. How often do you see that? Most importantly, why do we put them together? In the words of Mr. Raney, "WHHHHHHYYYYYYYY?" My classmates would be surprised to know I: Even though I STILL can not sing, I led the University of Mississippi/Ole Miss gospel choir in recording a CD that became the first CD recorded by a university choir to earn a GRAMMY NOMINATION. I was faculty advisor for the group through the process and my voice is used for the speaking introductions of two songs on the CD.

Other thoughts/comments/memories of Ridgeway: I remember chicken being thrown across the room in Mr. Henning’s 8th grade spelling class and him having to call Mr. White to come to the room several times a week. When he got there everything had calmed down and I think he thought Mr. Henning was nuts…Ms. Madlock crunching on her ice everyday in class from a coffee cup on her desk…Even though I went through 4 years of Spanish that Ms. Van Velsor did not like me very much…Coach Conn falling backwards in his chair in AP history class…brad Elster, Adam Nahmias, Adam Brown and David Lewis constantly abusing me and at the same time making me laugh (I rarely made them laugh though)…Mr. Raney’s fist pumping and sigh’s…Mr. Post dropping his metal poll on the floor at your feet when you fell asleep in his class…and lastly, I remember that computers were just coming into schools the last few years we were there and that I thought that I’d never have the use for one of those “things”… Where have you lived since high school graduation? What are some of your hobbies and interests? I work out with weights, playing tennis and enjoy running. I also love spending time with my friends and family. I’m really big into live music and go out to listen to bands a lot.
