BEFORE THE RIDE

Safety First  1MISSION’s Bikes Fight Poverty ride has earned a reputation as a safe event. Part of this reputation is due to the hard work of ride organizers, but the majority of the credit goes to the participants who respect the rights of others and ride safely. As a participant of Bikes Fight Poverty, you have an obligation to help maintain this safety record. You are an ambassador. All riders are expected to adhere to the following rules and safety tips:  o Follow all COVID restrictions (more on that later)  o It’s NOT a race!  o Protect your noodle! A hard shell helmet is required at all times when riding.  o This ride is conducted on major roads. Motor vehicles will be present so be aware of your surroundings at all times.  o Obey all traffic signs and signals.  o Pass on the left side only. And only when the entire group you are passing is pulled off the road.   o Make left turns from the center of the road or the left-hand turn lane.   o Maintain control and speed of your bike…even going downhill!  o Personal BlueTooth speakers, Walkmans, iPods, big-screen TVs, or anything with headphones are NOT permitted on the Bikes Fight Poverty course.  o Never overlap your wheels with another cyclist.  o Do not cross the yellow centerline regardless of a passing zone.  o Drafting vehicles is NOT allowed under any circumstances . You will be pulled from your bike for the remainder of the ride, no exceptions!    o Communicate with your fellow cyclists using the proper cycling terms such as “On your left,” “Car back,” etc.  o Arizona state law requires that you ride in a single file line and as far right as is practical.  o Take all cracks at a 90-degree angle. Point out any potholes/debris to those behind you .   o Be aware of how weather can affect your bike. Riding in wet conditions requires slower speeds and greater braking distances.  o No romantic sunset rides. There will be none of that happening on this ride. For safety reasons, ALL riders must be at the final destination by sunset. In order to make this happen, you may be picked up by a SAG vehicle and taken to the next aid station to meet back up with your group. Make sure you listen to your SAG driver as they have your best interest in mind!

BEFORE THE RIDE

COVID-19 Guidelines  The 1MISSION team is committed to your safety throughout the Bikes Fight Poverty event. Most of our work to keep everyone safe takes place behind the scenes so you can focus on riding without worrying about safety. This year we’re asking all riders, volunteers, and staff to take a few simple measures to reduce the risk of anyone catching or spreading COVID-19 while participating in the ride. Thanks in advance for your cooperation.   o If you are sick, experiencing any symptoms known to be associated with COVID-19, or have been exposed in recent days to someone who has, please DO NOT ride .  o We will be performing temperature checks for all riders and volunteers upon arrival on both mornings. Anyone with a fever will be sent home for their own wellbeing and for the safety of others.  o You will be required to fill out a health waiver during pre-registration.

o Masks will be required for all riders and volunteers at all times except when you are riding your bike or eating.

BEFORE THE RIDE

Safe Group Riding Tips  Stay Predictable Group riding requires more attention to predictability than riding alone. Riders are expecting you to continue straight ahead and at a certain pace unless you indicate otherwise.  Use Signals Use hand and verbal signals to communicate with fellow cyclists and other traffic.   Rider Courtesy If you need an impromptu pit stop be sure to clearly announce it, check behind you, and pull completely off the pavement. If you have to spit, make sure no one is right behind you!   Look Ahead Ride with your head up. Keep your eyes focused further down the road; not on the person directly in front of you.  Announce Hazards When riding in a group, most riders don’t have the best view of what might be coming up next. That’s why it’s very important to call out any changes to the riding surface such as: holes, glass, rocks, sand, grates, or even the pesky caution cone that is out of line. The leader should indicate these hazards by pointing down to the right or left and by shouting “hole,” “bump,” or “cone” where it is required for safety.  Watch for Traffic Bringing up the Rear Because the riders in the front can’t see traffic approaching from the rear, it is the expectation that the riders in the back tell the others by saying “car back.” It is also helpful to warn of traffic approaching from the front with “car up.”

Safe Group Riding Tips  A rider prepared for 1MISSION’s Bikes Fight Poverty event will generally have a more enjoyable ride than one who is not prepared. Preparation involves both yourself and your equipment. The following guidelines should help you get ready for the ride:  Miles, Miles, and More Miles 1MISSION recommends riders have a minimum of 500 miles of training rides during the months preceding the ride, including at least one ride of 90 miles or more. These are the minimum miles needed. More is better!  Equipment Check Make sure your bike is ready to withstand the ride. Remember you are riding 200+ miles in 2 days! We recommend getting your bike tuned up before the ride. We will be partnering with Exhale Bikes Inc again this year, so go visit them today.  Group Rides Riding in a group is much different than riding alone or training on a trainer. Make sure you join our Bikes Fight Poverty Facebook Group! There will be weekly pace-based group rides posted here. This will help you get used to group rides and a great way to get to know some of your fellow riders. Trust us, they will be a huge encouragement to you throughout this whole thing.

DURING THE RIDE

The Ride Official

The Ride Official is a person of authority who is here to ensure a safe and smooth experience for all riders and volunteers over the weekend. The ride official will travel along the course to ensure that everything is running smoothly and the rules are being followed.  Who’s this year’s ride official?   Curtis Jensen 626-592-4183

What does he do? Ever heard of wrangling cats? That’s what he does! Seriously, though, safety of the riders is his top priority. He will also ensure that all riders and volunteers are upholding the integrity of the ride and our mission at ALL times. He DOES have the authority to pull a rider from the ride for any length of time and for any reason. His decisions are final. A few other responsibilities that the Ride Official has include:  o Serves as a mediator between group leaders, SAG, riders, and volunteers should issues arise.  o Checks in with group leaders at aid stations regarding any issues they may have come across while on the road (minor crashes, insubordinate team members, issues with families following along) o Serves as FINAL say on whether a rider can continue in the event of an injury. o Sweeping riders for safety reasons.

11

Page 13: RIDER HANDBOOK 2021 - 1MISSION

You will also see Curtis stop at all aid stations to make any pertinent announcements (route changes, weather, border crossing instructions, etc.). Curtis will help regulate pacing and release times from aid stations. He’ll also enforce and monitor the following:  o No headphones o No vehicle drafting o Families or non-registered volunteers pulling over on the side of the road o Sweeping riders for safety reasons – this includes riders not keeping pace with their group  If you ever run into any questions or situations that you or your group leaders are unsure of the best decision, call the Ride Official!

DURING THE RIDE

SAG (Support and Gear)  Bikes Fight Poverty is a fully supported ride. Each group will be assigned one support vehicle that will be with them the entire trip. Every SAG wagon is clearly marked and contains the following: water supply, snacks, first aid kit, bicycle pump, tubes, tires, basic tools, and last but not least, SMILING faces.  The SAG will take riders to the nearest aid station in case of mechanical or physical breakdown. If unable to bike the following day, or if the rider wants to immediately return home, the rider will need to arrange their own transportation.  If you need a SAG vehicle to stop, simply wave them down, pat your helmet as they drive by and they will pull over ahead of the group.

Personal Support Vehicles  At 1MISSION, we pride ourselves in providing the best SAG volunteers anyone could ask for. For this reason, we respectfully request that riders DO NOT have personal support vehicles follow them. The route uses public roads, so the fewer vehicles on the road the better, as this will be safer for everyone.

Families Following Along

We love your families, but due to the nature of this year’s ride an COVID-19 restrictions, they will not be allowed to follow along or stop at rider aid stations along the way. It is fine for family members to do pick-up or drop-off at Tartesso, but we ask that they please not linger too long at the park. It’s important that we remain under our 50 person max gathering limit at all times.  To give your friends and family an opportunity to cheer you on, we have designated two specific “cheer zones” along the Day 2 route where they are welcome to safely cheer you on. These places are separate from rider aid stations and will not be staffed. Since this is an out-and-back route, you'll be riding by each of these locations twice.  Maps and details for the cheer zones are on the next page.

DURING THE RIDE

Families Following Along (continued)

Cheer Zone 1 Shell 19491 N Canyon Springs Blvd Buckeye, AZ 85396  This is on the north side of Sun Valley Parkway, about 15 miles from the start/finish location.

Cheer Zone 2 Crossriver HOA Park 118th Ave and W Williams Dr Sun City, AZ 85373  This is a huge park with lots of cheering spots. There is street parking all along Williams, but PLEASE DO NOT PARK ON THE STREET! That is the bike lane, and we need to keep that space clear for riders. Families can park in the parking lot off Williams, on side streets, or in the large dirt area on the east side of 117th Ave.

DURING THE RIDE

Stay Connected

Communication is key and that is why 1MISSION makes it a priority to have everyone stay in contact throughout the Bikes Fight Poverty event.  o SAGs will have cell phones for emergency in-ride communication only.  o If family members need to reach the rider for an emergency (ONLY), please contact Nate at (602) 550-0993 or Katie at (623) 628-8636 and the closest SAG will relay the message and help take appropriate measures.  o Family and friends can follow 1MISSION’s social media channels for photos, videos, and other updates throughout the ride: Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter.    o Feel free to bring your cell phone in your saddle bag.

First Aid  We have an awesome group of volunteers who are medical professionals. They will be sweeping back and forth all the groups along the route. Please remember that the volunteers will only provide basic first aid services and will not prescribe any prescription medicine or treatments. If needed the local 911 dispatcher will be contacted.

DURING THE RIDE

Weather  We should have perfect riding conditions! Average temperatures for the whole ride are highs in the mid-70s and lows in the mid-40s. Bikes Fight Poverty is a rain or shine event. Please pack accordingly. Obviously, safety is our #1 concern. If severe and unsafe weather occurs, an on-site call will be made.

Guests at the Finish Line  Guests will NOT be allowed at the launch location or finish line this year due to COVID-19 restrictions. For Day Two, there are two predetermined locations that we’ve selected where your family can cheer you on. We ask that anyone who comes out to cheer adheres to social distancing guidelines, including wearing a mask.

Transportation  Since both days’ routes are out-and-back, you will be allowed to park at Tartesso and are responsible for your own transportation to and from the launch point at the beginning and end of both days.

FAQ

Questions? We’ve got answers.

What type of bike do I need? You can ride any bike as long as it has brakes. We recommend a road bike. Make sure your bike is in good condition and can withstand the strain of this ride. Please get your bike checked out and tuned up BEFORE the morning of the ride.  Is it a race? A big N-O to that one. This is a charity ride and a team effort. There is no reward for finishing first.  How fast is the pace? Can I keep up? Our slowest pace is 15 mph.  How far/long is Day 1? And Day 2? Day 1 is a 99-mile out-and-back ride to Gila Bend. Day 2 is a 101-mile out-and-back ride to Glendale Preparatory Academy.   What if I can’t ride the entire distance? You do not have to ride the entire distance. If at any point you become too fatigued or feel like you need a break, flag down one of the SAG vehicles. The SAG vehicle will take you to the next point where you can meet up with your group. If at any point you feel you need to switch pace groups it will need to be discussed between group leaders and SAG drivers.  What kind of support is there during the ride? We pride ourselves on having one of the best SAG teams in the nation, all of which are volunteers! We have rest stops every 15-20 miles, and sag vehicles stationed every 5 miles. The SAGs carry tubes, tires, pumps, first aid kits, sunscreen, water, and extra nutrition. There are also aid stations every 20-30 miles along the entire route. The aid stations have everything that the SAG vehicles have plus more food and restrooms.  Is there medical support available if something goes wrong? Yes. We have a medical team staffed with first responders, and local law enforcement are notified of the event.  Are meals provided? All meals are provided. This includes: breakfast, lunch, and dinner on both Days 1 and 2. If you have any special dietary needs, please reach out to us for a list of items we will have available.
