Different cables...New materials and new productionmethods have changed the face ofmedium voltage cables completelyover the years, resulting in increasedcomplexity. Paper and plastic insu-lated cables with one or three cores, round or sector shape, and many different types of shielding, waterblocking systems, as well as varyinginsulation thickness can be found intoday's networks.

...or Tyco Electronics EnergyDivision flexibility.Heat-shrink technology makes it possible to use a single size of fittings for a large number of cable cross sections and types. This universal technology not onlyreduces the requirement for jointertraining but also the installation time, at the same time increasing the reliability, irrespectice of the type of cable used in the network.

The increasing popularity of gas insulated switchgear called for thedevelopment of an appropriate connection to the bushing. The Tyco Electronics Energy Divisionhas developed two systems for thispurpose. The RICS insulating adapter(630 A) is compatible with allRaychem terminations and can thusbe used to connect any type of cable,irrespective of whether it is paper orplastic insulated or has one or threecores.

Simplified installationThe compact design of the adaptersand their clear cut profiles simplifyinstallation. The electrical connectionwith the aid of a stud renders addi-tional fastening systems unnecessary.

ReliabilityTyco Electronics Energy Division hasseveral decades of experience in thefield of hermetically insulated termi-nation systems for medium voltageapplications. The adapters are water tight andguarantee uninterrupted operation,even under extreme environmentalconditions with severe pollution.

TestsThe adapters conform to IEC 540,VDE 0278 and ANSI IEEE 386 specifi-cations, as well as to the Raychemspecification PPS 3013.The test requirements and results aresummarized in Raychem Test ReportPPR 1106, which is available onrequest.

The insulated adapter terminationsystem provides perfect sealing, electrical insulation and an electricalconnection between Raychem termi-nations and SF6-insulated switchgearup to 24 kV. Its lead-in insulator (630 A) conformsto DIN 47636 and ANSI IEEE 386. The cable box of the switchgear must be provided with suitable protection against electric shock. The insulating adapter is compatiblewith all Raychem terminations. Details of the terminations can befound in the cable accessories catalogue.

Straight adapter

DesignA thick walled, heat-shrinkable insulating sleeve provides a hermetic seal over the cone of the bushing and the termination. The adapter area is smoothed with a meltable filler strip.

Scope of supply (for three phases)Heat-shrinkable insulating sleeving,filler strip, small accessories andinstallation instructions. Terminal stud and lug must be enclosed.

T-adapter with or without surge arrester

DesignThick walled insulator made of highquality elastomer with sealing faceover the termination, bushing coneand plug. The electrical connection is madewith a terminal stud and the cable lug of the termination. Two cable connection is possible. A special plugwhich allows cable testing without disconnecting the adapter is alsooffered. The design of the adapter for connecting the surge arrester isbasically identical. The elastomerinsulator has an additional lead-induct for the surge arrester. Details of the surge arresters can be found in the brochure EPP 0533.
