Principal’s Report

At the Week 6 Assembly I addressed the school on some of the major events that have taken place this term and congratulated the students and staff involved. I have outlined some of these below:

Jeans for Genes Day

Our Student Representative Council organised for this fund raising event to support genetic research. The school supported this by wearing jeans along with their school uniform.

Red Nose Day

One of our major events of the year, Red Nose Day, is organised by our SRC but involves many students and staff throughout the day. Our Federal Member, Susan Templeman and our Hawkesbury Mayor attended the Polair flyover along with representatives from local schools. Our entire school participated in mapping out our image for 2019 which was a seal. The Red Nose Day concert featured our talented performers. Ms Dale and Mr Pollard who co-ordinated our SRC are to be congratulated on their leadership.

Schools Embracing Cultural Diversity

Our annual SECA day was held recently which features food stalls representing the national and cultural foods from around the globe. Many students, staff and parents provide the food for the school to sample. The day was held outdoors for the first time and the lunchtime activities were a huge success. Congratulations to Ms Nixon, Ms Badiu, Ms Haythornthwaite and all staff who supported the day.

In the afternoon the annual Richmond Rules game was played (postponed from Red Nose Day) and in the spirit of good sportsmanship was enjoyed by both players and spectators. Thank you to Mr Jack for organising the game.

Quest Enrichment Showcase

Our talented students who took up the opportunity to pursue a project that centred around an interest were able to showcase their project at the Quest Enrichment Showcase Evening. The diversity of projects was amazing and students were able to discuss their projects with enthusiasm. Ms Lewis who leads our Gifted and Talented programs continues to provide opportunities beyond the classroom for students to demonstrate their ability.

Minimum Standards Testing

This is a Premier’s priority and the program aims to establish a minimum standard in literacy and numeracy for the award of the NSW HSC. This means to achieve a HSC credential, students must satisfactorily attempt the minimum standards tests in writing, reading and numeracy. Many of our Year 10 and 11 students have already sat and passed the tests.

For those students who have yet to pass one or more of the tests, the school is providing additional support to prepare the students. They can attempt this twice in any

Please note that our School Eftpos machines in our

Front Office and Canteen have a minimum

transaction spend of $10.00.

School Opal Card: Students, please ensure you Tap On and Tap Off!

An important requirement of the School Opal card is the need for students to Tap On and Tap Off when they travel to and from school.

Opal data gathered by tapping on and off is used to determine demand for bus services. If students don’t tap on and tap off, services may be cancelled due to the lack of recorded patronage.

To further promote the use of School Opal, Busways will also be conducting checks on School Opal cards over the coming months. All students travelling on buses to and from school will be required to show their card and ensure they Tap On and Tap Off every time they catch the bus. Students without an Opal Card will be provided with a brochure to take home identifying how they can get an Opal Card.

Please keep our students safe

In the interest of our students’ safety, we request that

parents DO NOT use the staff carpark as a drop off or

pick up zone for their children.

The entrance/exit to our school is ONE WAY and has a

high level of student and staff pedestrian activity in the

morning and afternoons. Please utilise the designated

areas on Lennox, West Market Street or Castlereagh

Road to drop off or pick up your children. Thank you.

year. The aim at Richmond High School is to have all Year 10 students pass the tests and be eligible for a HSC. Many potential employers are asking applicants for evidence that they have passed the tests. TAFE have a similar test to assess students ability to complete their courses.

HSC Major Works and Performances

In Term 3 students who have elected to study courses with a Major Project or Performance component are required to submit their works for assessment by external examiners. This is why at Richmond High School we hold our HSC Trial Examinations at the end of Term 2 - to enable students to focus on their Major Works and Performances.

Over the coming weeks many of our Year 12 students will submit or perform as part of their HSC result. I wish them success in demonstrating what they can create or demonstrate through performance. I would also like to acknowledge their dedicated teachers Mr Hupalo: Industrial Technology, Ms Fakes: Drama, Ms Bow: Society and Culture, Ms Vaz: Family and Community Studies, Mr Wyatt: Visual Art and Mr Turner: Music.

Deputy Principal’s Report

Term 3 has been a fantastic term so far and there have been lots of exciting opportunities for students across the school. We have held our annual fundraiser for Red Nose Day, selected students from across the school were involved in the QUEST Program and Exhibition Night, our SECA team hosted our International Food Court and we have celebrated the success of lots of students involved in sporting events throughout the term.

We continue to have lots of students involved in these co-curricular activities, that extend students passions and interests. A big congratulations to all staff and students involved in any special programs that have been on offer so far this term.

Year 5 Mini Lessons

Over the last two weeks we have had the privilege of hosting some exciting mini lessons for our incoming local Primary School students. Richmond Public School, Bligh Park Public School, Hobartville Public School, Castlereagh Pubic School and Londonderry Public School all visited to

have a ‘taste’ of what High School is like. It was wonderful to see the passion and excitement in all the students and they were extremely well behaved.

Subject Selections

We are almost finished with the Subject Selection process for students in Years 8, 9 & 10. Students will be meeting with both DP’s in the coming weeks to finalise subject choices. Some students may need to select a different subject if there are clashes or two of their subjects running at the same time. We have done our best to cater for the needs of all students across the different stages and hope our community are happy with the wide variety of options we offer for our students in Stages 5 and 6. If parents have questions, please don’t hesitate to contact Mrs Cullen, Mr Gordon or your child’s Year Advisor.

Year 6 BYOD Information Evening

On Tuesday 27th August we welcomed over 40 families to the school to participate in a Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) Information Evening. It was great to hear from our BYOD Coordinator - Ms Beth Middleton, P&C Representative - Alison Webster and also two Year 7 students Rachel D and Maddison D.

On the evening families were provided with information about our program and were able to meet with staff across the school who showcased the quality teaching

and learning that is taking place in our classrooms.

Further information will be provided to our Year 6 families at our Orientation Day on Tuesday 3rd December.

Year 12 Graduation and Final Weeks

We are coming to the end of 13 years of schooling for the class of Year 12, 2019. All parents and friends are invited to celebrate their graduation on Friday 27th September, 2019. Year 12 final reports will also be distributed on this date.

We continue to encourage students to attend all lessons in the lead up to their HSC Examinations. The revision period and reflection of their Stage 6 work is an extremely

important part of cementing their knowledge and preparing them for their final examinations. All students are required to be at school until their graduation.

The whole school is proud of all of their achievements and wish them all the best in the lead up to their examinations. Please remember we are always here to support our students in any way that they need. Remember to stay calm, study hard and continue to strive to achieve your personal best.

Thanks again to the community for their ongoing support of our school. If you have any questions or issues that have arisen, please don’t hesitate to contact either Deputy Principal at any time.

Year 10 Macbeth Excursion

On Thursday 16th September, Mrs Koller & Ms Dale had the pleasure of taking a wonderful group of Year 10 students to the Sydney Opera House to see a performance of Macbeth by the Bell Shakespeare company. The production was of exceptional quality in terms of acting performances and production. The excursion was not only an enjoyable bonding opportunity but also provided valuable insight into the complexities of the play, which will assist students in preparing for their Comparative essay Assessment Task on Macbeth in Week 9. It was a pleasure to see these students conducting themselves responsibly at all times and acting as positive representatives of Richmond High School throughout the day. Congratulations Year 10.

Senior Support HSIE

The Senior Support HSIE classes are looking at modes of transport that people use to travel between various locations and environments. They were given an assignment to research a chosen mode of travel, create a model of it and then present it to the class. Within their presentation they had to discuss reasons for the mode of transport and then examine its efficiency in todays

environments. This group decided to look at the Dog Sled.

The year 12 students are in the process of creating 3D prints of their modes of travel.

Our Very Own Singing Star!

Our very own Paige P (Year 10) was invited to perform at Foire De Bourail (which translates to the Bourail Fair) in New Caledonia. They recognised her singing talent whilst performing at the Royal Easter Show earlier on in the year and invited her to perform in a number of 45 minute sets at the fair. Well done Paige!

Ag Vision 2019

On Wednesday 7th August, students from Stage 5, Ag Show Team and Year 12 went to Ag Vision 2019. Ag Vision is Australia’s premier agriculture and agribusiness careers exhibition. Now in its seventh year, Ag Vision had around 1,200 students from years 9-12 attend interactive sessions and network with leading agricultural experts, at Sydney Showground, Sydney Olympic Park. General Manager, Agriculture & Sydney Royal Easter Show, Murray Wilton, said Ag Vision aims to empower and educate high school students on agriculture, driving career ambitions and giving young people the knowledge and information necessary to harness future roles within the industry. “We’re delighted the event has resonated with so many schools across NSW and we look forward to showcasing a range of agricultural opportunities to students who are starting to think more seriously about their careers,” Mr Wilton said. “With everything from edible bug farmers, to drone pilots and agriculture communicators, the opportunities within the agricultural industry are endless.” “If Ag Vision demonstrates one thing, it’s that a career in agriculture doesn’t necessarily mean working on the land – it’s about progression, technology and problem solving.” “Students could be working in metropolitan areas, helping craft the future of sustainable living through urban farming - the possibilities are endless,” he said. Our students attended six, half hour sessions with over 60 industry experts, ranging from mental health professionals, to agricultural ecologists and working dog trainers. My favourite workshop was the Permaculture session. We attended an opening ceremony and then we were

escorted to our chosen workshops, including flying drone simulators, milking demonstrations and practicing wound healing techniques for aspiring veterinarians. All sessions were interactive, encouraging hands-on learning for students, including recess mustering demonstrations and a lunch-time Junior Young Farmer Challenge. A fantastic day was had by all.

Round 4 CHS Knockout

On Thursday the 15th of August our Under 15 Girls Basketball Team played Round 4 of CHS knockout and won 43-26 against Kellyville. They also defeated Auburn Girls & Cambridge Park. They have qualified for the Sydney West final 8 Gala Day.

We are proud of the girls who all played well and are improving with each game.

International Mounted Games

In January 2019, Aaron N (Year 10) was selected to represent Pony Club Australia in the sport of Mounted Games. Since this time Aaron has been working hard to keep fit and fundraising to help cover the cost involved in getting to America. The start of Aaron’s trip involved a 3 day training camp in Melbourne where Aaron met his four team mates. They then left as a team from Melbourne heading to Colorado, USA. Upon arriving in Colorado they spent a week involved with team bonding and sightseeing. There was also a formal dinner during which the riders and teams introduced themselves. One of the highlights of the trip for Aaron was getting to visit the Olympic Training Centre.

The teams all had many mini competitions leading up to the major competition (Baseball, Games on foot etc) all of which the Australian team excelled at. Competition day arrived and riders met the horses for the first time. They had a short time to try out the horses before the competition started. Horses were not like what the team were used to back home so the first few races were very testing. There were 21 races in total and coming down to the last race, Australia had a 2 point lead, so they had to place 1st or 2nd in the last race to secure the win. Aaron was the last rider on field for his team and it was close but Aaron came across the line in first place securing the win for Australia!

Australia became the world champion Pony Club Mounted Games team for 2019. Aaron has now been on his club champion team, zone champion team, state champion team, national champion team and international champion team and now holds the title of world champion. For those that don't know mounted games it is classed as an extreme horse sport where riders can been seen leaning off their horses at high speeds to gather equipment as well as vaulting on and off at high speeds for different races. Aaron’s brother Jared also competed in the same championship 2 years ago in Vancouver, Canada. Aaron was also selected to be on the under 17 years world team for mounted games Australia in England but unfortunately had to pass due to high costs.

Boys Netball Metro Finals

Well done to both of our Boys Netball teams for their impressive results at the Metro Finals held at Sydney Olympic Park in Week 4.

The 7 & Boys team came 4 out of 8 teams and the 9 & 10 Boys team were 5th out of 11 teams.

Zoe B (Year 9) was kind enough to umpire the games on both days for us.

Olympics Unleashed On Tuesday 27th of August, Richmond High School had the privilege of participating in the Olympics Unleashed program. This program is targeted at Year 9 students giving them insight into what it means to be an elite athlete, while promoting the Olympic values of friendship, respect and excellence. We were fortunate enough to have Suzy Balough attend Richmond High. Suzy’s sport is Clay Target Shooting and her event is the Olympic Trap. Suzy has won an Olympic gold medal at the 2004 Athens Olympics. Students had the opportunity to hold the medal ad see first hand what one looks like. Our students listened intently to Suzy’s story and the challenges she had to overcome to be the best in the world.

One key message to come from her presentation was the importance of goal setting and resilience. We would like to thank Suzy for spending the morning with Year 9 at Richmond High School.

Quest Enrichment Showcase

Congratulations to Ms Lewis and all the students who participated in the Quest Enrichment Showcase on August 19th. The talent and enthusiasm shown by all the students involved was very impressive. We would also like to extend our thanks to the parents and careers for supporting our students and attending the evening.

SECA International FOOD COURT

Another awesome event took place at Richmond High last Friday, August the 23rd- OUR SECA FOOD COURT. The weather was glorious, the students were ready, packed and willing and the staff came on board like they always do- with professionalism and generosity of spirit.

Our annual SECA Food court had a venue change this year- the year 7 Quad and it turned out to be the most perfect spot to experience a wonderful lunchtime vibe.

There were stalls everywhere with so much choice for our students and staff to enjoy. There were endless amounts of desserts and pastries like mud cake, apple pies, strudels, Dutch pancakes, cookies and Greek doughnuts. There was home-cooked Malaysian curry and rice to eat as well as Maltese pastizzis and Kinnie (a Lebanese bbq featuring Koftas), Italian mini pizzas and arrancini, a Chinese stall with pork buns and moon cake, delicious Filipino skewers, wonderful Indian curries, Mexican nachos, some Spanish tapas, an Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander stall with crocodile sausages (as well as other tucker) and OF COURSE Mr Wyatt’s ice creamery - a fabulous stall that never fails to impress.

This event is a magnificent showcase of Richmond High at its best. Richmond students and staff come together beautifully to make it happen and everyone is united in their desire to experience or share something new with

their friends and teachers.

In the end, the SECA Food Court is setting out to achieve what it was meant to do: Students are Embracing Cultural Awareness but they are also learning how to be respectful, tolerant and generous citizens of the world.

Thank you greatly to all the parents, staff and students who contributed and supported this event. Without your assistance, it would not have been possible. We appreciate everything you do on this day.

Until we feast again! Ciao!

Written by Madame Badiu on behalf of the SECA Team.

Ms Nixon, Mrs Badiu, Miss Fisher, Miss Wayman, Ms Haythornwaite and Ms Flood.

Transition from School - Year 12

Year 12 - University Applications

The University Admissions Centre (UAC) processes applications to most undergraduate courses at participating institutions (mainly located in NSW and ACT). UAC also calculate the ATAR and process equity programs on behalf of institutions: Schools Recommendation Schemes, Educational Access Schemes and Equity Scholarships.

The UAC Guide 2019-2020 has been issued to Year 12 students. It leads students through the application process and offers comprehensive details of more than 2000 tertiary courses. Any Year 12 student who has not received their UAC Guide, please collect from Ms Hyde’s Office in the library.

On-time applications to UAC close on the 30th September 2019. UAC has a $70 processing charge which must be paid to UAC by the above due date to avoid higher processing charges. The inside cover of the UAC Guide provides key dates for students regarding offers and change of preferences. For further information on UAC go to www.uac.edu.au

Once students have applied to UAC, they can then apply for Schools Recommendation Schemes (SRS) and Educational Access Schemes (EAS). SRS is one way institutions make early offers using criteria other than the ATAR. A summary of the SRS is in this newsletter and more information can be found at https://www.uac.edu.au/future-applicants/scholarships-and-schemes/schools-recommendation-schemes The Educational Access Scheme (EAS) is for students who have experienced educational disadvantage due to circumstances beyond their control for a period of at least 6 months in Year 11 and/or 12. If you are eligible for consideration under EAS and your ATAR is below the selection rank for a course, an institution can increase your selection rank (equity adjustment), or allocate you a reserved place. The school will need to provide an Educational Impact Statement to support your application and you may be required to gather further documentation for EAS. Further information about the EAS including categories of disadvantage and required documentation can be found at: https://www.uac.edu.au/future-applicants/scholarships-and-schemes/educational-access-schemes

The Careers Adviser, Ms Hyde, is currently supporting Year 12 students with their University applications, SRS and EAS applications. Any questions regarding the University application process, including EAS and SRS, please contact [email protected] or phone the school on 4578 1177.

Year 12 - TAFE Applications

Students seeking an enrolment at TAFE for 2019 should go to the TAFE website to explore the variety of courses available. Enrolment for 2019 occurs December 2019-January 2020. Some courses have compulsory information sessions that you must attend. Further information about these sessions can be found on the TAFE website www.tafensw.edu.au or call 131601. To apply for TAFE, you will need your Unique Student Identifier (USI). To create or to retrieve your USI go to: https://www.usi.gov.au

Year 10 , 11 and 12- Seeking an Apprenticeship or Traineeship

Students seeking an apprenticeship or traineeship can contact a potential employer directly or seek assistance from a Group Training Organisation. Students should ensure they have an updated CV and cover letter and should see Ms Hyde for assistance in creating either of these documents if support is required. Other options for apprenticeships or traineeships can include completing a Pre-Apprenticeship course through TAFE or another provider. Helpful links below

When students are absent or late…

Students who arrive late to school (after 8:35am) must report to the Front Office where they will sign in via our electronic kiosk and be issued a late pass. Students without a note to explain their late arrival will be placed on detention.

Each day SMS messages will be sent to parents of all students who are not present at Roll Call and for whom we do not already have an explanation. Parents will be asked to respond to the message and explain the student absence.

Need to talk with your child’s teacher?

Your child’s teacher is always happy to talk to

you. As our teachers are usually on class, it is

best to phone ahead and leave a message with

the Front Office staff for them to call you back or

send them an email to make a time for a chat.

Contacting your child’s teacher via email is easy,

just email the school:

[email protected]

making sure you pop the teacher’s name in the

subject area.
