Dates to Remember - Term 4 Year 12 Graduation

Our Year 12 cohort attended their formal Graduation Assembly on the last day of Term 3 to celebrate their achievements in completing 13 years of schooling. This was our very first Graduation to take place in our lovely new MPC. The students looked fabulous in their hats and gowns.

We wish Year 12 all the best with their HSC exams and their future endeavours.

Principal’s Report

Welcome to Term 4, 2019

Welcome back to Term 4 and at the time of writing this article, there are only 38 school days left in 2019 for our students. It is a busy term with our Year 12 students already half way through their HSC examinations, Year 11 beginning their HSC courses, Years 7-10 preparing for their Semester 2 Assessment Period (Nov 11-20) and our staff busily writing Year 11 Reports and preparing for the assessment and reporting periods this term. The days will go very quickly so I encourage our school community to keep up to date with our various means of communication - school app, website, Facebook page and newsletter - to stay informed regarding important dates and deadlines.

Mr Ralph Relieving DEL Term 4

Early in week one of this term, our Principal Mr Ralph received a call from the schools Executive Director, Mr Tim McCallum, requesting that he relieve as Director Educational Leadership (DEL) for the Hawkesbury Network of Schools (3 highs schools and approximately 18 primary schools). This is a tremendous honour for Mr Ralph and is great recognition for the fabulous work he has done here at Richmond High School since January 2014 when he took up the Principal role. Under his leadership the school has made many great strides forward in delivering a quality education to our students in the 21st century. Recent successes include the NSW Premier’s Award for Service to Public Education for the Guided Learning Overseeing Student Success (GLOSS)

literacy program, the successful implementation of the BYOD program for Year 7, two student trips to Kokoda, the expansion of the Gifted & Talented program through English Enrichment and Quest, and the project management of our new Multi-Purpose Centre (MPC) to replace the MAC.

For the remainder of 2019, I look forward to the challenge of taking up the role of Relieving Principal. Ms Beth Middleton will be the Relieving Deputy Principal for Years 7, 9 and 11, and along with Mrs Cullen, Deputy Principal for Years 8, 10 and 12, they will ably assist me in leading the school for the remainder of Term 4. It is a tremendous honour for me to be entrusted with the responsibility to ensure that we continue on the ROAD to SUCCESS, providing opportunities for all students to excel at Richmond High School. It is a great school, in a

great community—a community that I have grown very fond of over the last 5 and a half years, and hopefully I can continue to make a positive contribution to the Hawkesbury for some years to come.

Mr Ralph has assured us all that he will be remaining in contact with Richmond High School in his role as Director and will return as Principal in 2020.

Inaugural Attendance Excellence Award

At our annual Presentation Night for 2019 (Dec 17), a new and very special award will be presented to one of our Year 12 students from the Class of 2019. Cameron W will be the recipient of the Richmond High School Attendance Excellence Award for maintaining a perfect record of high school attendance from Year 7 (2014) to Year 12 (2019). This achievement is quite rare and represents approximately 1150 school days that Cameron has attended in a row without a single day absent from school. In that time Cameron has been an active and productive member of our school community, including being a school leader in 2019, SRC member, participated in the Duke of Edinburgh program, been a peer support leader and represented the school in a variety of sports. He has done this whilst being a very solid student academically achieving excellent results in his Industrial Technology, Visual Arts and Investigating Science HSC courses.

Cameron epitomises what you can achieve by being a safe respectful learner, who fully embraces the Richmond High School community and endeavours to be a “5 for Effort” in everything he participates in, both in and out of the classroom. Well done Cameron on your amazing achievement in attending every day of high school, demonstrating your outstanding commitment to your learning, an amazing ability to ‘stay healthy’ and endurance over the course of 6 years. I am sure that this award will generate tremendous interest from potential employers in the future when they see it in Cameron’s resume.




Year 12 Class of 2019

Congratulations to the Year 12 Class of 2019 for successfully completing 13 years of schooling. The whole cohort presented magnificently in their graduation caps and gowns in Term 3 in front of family, friends and staff. One of the highlights of the ceremony was Arielle S beautiful performance of the song she had written to her peers to mark this special occasion. Her performance was yet another example of the talent, heart and soul of our students here at Richmond HS.

Special thanks to Mrs Jan Farley for her work with this cohort of students as their Year Advisor for the last 6 years. She has done a wonderful job leading, nurturing and supporting them through their high school years. Thank you to Mrs Tara Cullen for her work as their Deputy Principal. She has been a tremendous advocate for these students in identifying and catering for their needs for the last 3 years. Thank you to Mrs Katherine Profilio and Ms Kelly Bow for their work as Head Teacher Welfare in organising a wonderful graduation ceremony. Their hard work and collaboration with our fabulous office staff, resulted in a memorable occasion for all involved. Well done!

RELIEVING PRINCIPAL

We would to congratulate Cameron W (Year 12) and Aleisha T (Year 12) on being awarded a Silver Award. Cameron and Aleisha were formally recognised at the recent Year 12 Graduation Assembly for earning 2 x Bronze Awards.

This is a significant event and Cameron and Aleisha are to be commended for this outstanding achievement! We have not had a student receive a Silver Award for over 5 years.

Elliot A (Year 12) was also rewarded with a Bronze Award for having received 5 Principal Awards.

Deputy Principal’s Report

HSC Examinations

I would like to start by welcoming everyone back to the start of Term 4. We have already had a busy start to the term with our Year 12 students commencing their HSC Examinations. We are very proud of the Class of 2019 and wish them all the best in the coming weeks.

Year 12 Graduation

On 27th September our students along with our school community celebrated the Graduation of the Class of 2019. It was a wonderful way to celebrate the success of all our students and acknowledge the hard work of 13 years of schooling. The Graduation is one of many celebrations we have had to celebrate the commitment and dedication of all our students. We have also had a special whole school assembly, Year 12 Breakfast and BBQ at Pugh’s Lagoon at the end of Term 3. We would like to thank all the teachers who have been involved in the organisation, especially their Year Advisor Mrs Jan Farley and are looking forward to the Year 12 Formal on Wednesday 27th November at Crowne Plaza, Windsor.

School Reports

Staff are currently finalising Year 11 Reports and they will be distributed later this term. Years 7-10 Reports will be completed after the examination period in Week 5 and distributed in the last week of school. Please remember that your child’s annual report is their

progress across the school year. This year our school focus has been ‘The Road to Success’. We have spent time in roll call classes explaining to students that we want them to be focussing on the effort and achieving a ‘5’ in all their subject areas. To receive a ‘5’ your son/daughter would be achieving the following:

1. Regular Attendance and Punctuality

2. Packed for Learning

3.Cooperative & Respectful

4. Attentive & Engaged

5. Application & Seeking Improvement

We will continue to encourage our students to strive for success and focus in class to ensure they are focused on their main priority at school ‘learning’.

Year 11

At the start of this Term, Year 11 received their HSC Assessment Booklets and have been making decisions about subject changes for 2020. They officially commenced their HSC pattern of study on Monday 14th October. A reminder to parents that all students are required to be at school for the commencement of the school day at 8:35. Seniors are only allowed to sign out if they have study periods after lunch.

End of Year Examinations

Over the next few weeks we have students in Years 7-10 completing their End of Year Examinations. See below some of the key dates:

School Attendance - is important

Parents are reminded of the following:

School attendance is compulsory until a student reaches the age of 17 years.

Parents must provide documentation to the school for all their child’s absences (whole & partial days).

Rolls are marked every lesson of the day commencing with Roll Call at 8:35am.

Students who arrive late to school (after 8:35am) must report to the Front Office where they will sign in via our electronic kiosk and receive a late pass. Students without a note from a parent or carer to explain their late arrival will be placed on detention.

Sick leave - If your child is absent for more than 3

consecutive days due to illness a doctors Certificate is required.

Leave - Parents are to notify the school. Leave is for an unforeseen event, domestic necessity, funerals & travel. An application for leave is required for any more than 5 consecutive days.

Parents who are aware that their children are going to be absent from school are asked to phone Richmond High School Office staff on 4578 1177 prior to the start of the school day to inform the office of their child’s absence or respond to the SMS message.

Parents whose children are absent from school without explanation will receive a SMS message informing them of their child’s absence. Parents are to respond to this message by following the prompts.

Parents who do not respond to the message or give an explanation for the absence will remain in the system as ‘Unexplained - Unjustified’.

Cabramatta - SECA Cultural Excursion 2019

A fabulous group of Year 8 and 9 students enjoyed a day out in Cabramatta Week 9, Term 3. The excursion was a reward for the contributions each of the students had made to SECA in 2019 – particularly the SECA Food Court. Students explored the centre of Cabramatta and its many arcades as well as the Freedom Plaza. The Freedom Plaza, and the Pai Lau (gateway) was created to symbolise harmony and multiculturalism and students were able to read about and listen to the story behind the creation of this landmark.

Cabramatta is the centre for Sydney’s Vietnamese community but also hosts many residents from other Asian and European origins. Students embraced the opportunity to learn about these other cultures, particularly the varied food and goods offered in its shops – like Thai green mangoes and bubble tea, as well as the history of migration and Cabramatta’s vibrant multicultural community.

The day was capped off by a delicious Yum Cha lunch at Vinh Phat Restaurant. The students displayed outstanding behaviour and are to be commended for their willingness to embrace this experience, which for many was their first time eating Yum Cha (i.e. dumplings, noodle stir fries and steamed Chinese broccoli).

An excellent show by Richmond High School students. Well done all.

Year 7 Geography Excursion

On Thursday the 12th September, the HSIE Faculty took 60 excited Year 7 students for a bushwalk to Scenic World Katoomba for the annual Year 7 Blue Mountains excursion. For many students, this was the first time bushwalking through a national park and many expressed how much they enjoyed the experience.

The excursion supported student learning in class about landscapes and landforms and how landscapes are managed and preserved. Students were able to observe firsthand how vegetation changes with topography and climate, the major landforms and physical features of the Blue Mountains National Park and how these beautiful places are managed for all to enjoy.

A highpoint was the Scenic Railway trip up from the valley floor. This is the steepest passenger railway in the world – a 128% incline over 310 metres through open terrain and a tunnel! Just a few squeals of delight echoed through the valley.

Congratulations to Richmond High School students for their behaviour and their participation on the day.

Nova Step Program – 2019

Congratulations to S6 Class for completing their Nova Step Program successfully. The lessons covered practical, physical and emotional preparation for the world of work. The job club modules focused on planning and reaching goals, resume, job seeking, overcoming barriers and building self-esteem, personal presentation, job interviews and starting new jobs.




We are very proud of our students’ achievements in external events and competitions and are committed to recognising their achievements, however, this cannot happen unless we are informed. Please ring us or send us something in writing if your child or a group of students achieve success in external events so we can recognise their achievements in our newsletters. Sydney West Cricket

Well done to Charlie K (Year 9) for being selected on the Sydney West Cricket Team.

Hawkesbury Dance Festival

Several of our students performed at the recent Hawkesbury Dance Festival held at Windsor Function Centre. We were selected for the Festival via an audition process during the year. Both our junior and senior groups performed very well. We received accolades from the organiser of the event in regard to the excellent behaviour and cooperation of the Richmond High School Students which included:

Year 7: Olivia B, Layla B, Tammin B, Gemma K, Maddison D, Grace A, Lucy C, Crystal S.

Year 10: Paige P, Olivia C, Monique B.

Representative Sport

Congratulations to Anastacia S (Year 10), Erin G (Year 11) and Molly W (Year 10) who made the Macquarie Zone Oztag team who won the Sydney West championship

defeating the Hills zone 3-2. Jake E (Year 10), Michael C (Year 10), Jayden C (Year 10) and Charlie K (Year 9) made the Macquarie Zone Oztag team for boys who lost in extra time in the Semi finals. All students represented Richmond with pride and should be proud of their efforts.

On Friday 25th of October, the u/14’s boys and the Intermediate girls Rugby 7’s squad took part in the Hawkesbury Valley Rugby Club Western Sydney school 7’s which was held in Windsor. The Girls put in a massive effort in the heat especially with so many playing football for the first time. The girls were dominate early making the semi final, up against Winmalee. The girls were down 21-0 at half time, after a big half time speech the girls really showed up steaming over the top of them to win 28-21. In a close grand final against Arndell the game went back and forth till Arndell scored on the buzzer to win 21-14. The Runners up for 2019! The MVP was split between Emma N (Year 11) and Brooke G (Year 8). Congratulations to the u/14’s boys who took out the Rugby 7’s undefeated beating WCC in the final! Massive effort in the heat and a big well done to all the boys on debut thanks to all the senior boys who helped out, the future is bright for these Rhinos. MVP = Samuel M (Year 8).

A Note from the Ag Plot

Term 3 was an exciting time for our Agriculture Faculty. The first of our baby lambs were born in the last week of Term and the students and staff have been so excited to meet them.

Year 7 gardens are looking amazing and after some successful mulching we have some items ready to harvest after the holidays.

Year 8 will have an exciting term with the baby chicks arriving in the next two weeks. We can't wait to show you more pictures from our Agriculture Plot in the next few weeks.

Our TV Star

Last year Bailey P (Year 10) was an extra in a new Australian Comedy series called ‘Frayed’ which starts this month on ABC at 9pm. He was filmed in a disco setting and outside disco hall (filmed at Cronulla High School). Hopefully we'll get to spot him on the TV. The photo shows his spiffy wardrobe for the show which is set in the 1980's.




Support Maths

Hair with Heart

Layla B (Year 7) recently participated in a fundraising drive for Variety's "Hair with Heart". Layla was motivated by a family member being diagnosed with cancer. Layla had over 40 centimetres of her hair cut off on the 27th of September.

A snapshot of Home Economics

It has been a busy time for Food Technology students at Richmond High School this semester. Stage 5 students have been busy completing their Food For Special Occasions assessment task, which involved menu planning for a children’s birthday party, and developing their numeracy skills by costing both the menu and the cake. In addition, students have designed and created a birthday cake for their party and I’m sure you would agree, the results are amazing. All students should be very proud of their effort and application in this task. Mrs Vaz and Mrs Parsons are certainly very proud of the achievements.

Meanwhile Year 7 Technology students are busy learning to work in a safe and hygienic manner in practical lessons, presenting their dishes to a high standard, while developing very professionally designed e-folio recipe collections via Google sites and slides.

English Hub!

Is your son or daughter struggling in English? Do they need a little bit of support with homework or class assignments?

Every Tuesday afternoon from 3:00pm-4:00pm there is an English Homework and Study Centre at the Learning Centre for those students who would like a little bit of extra support and assistance with homework and assessment tasks.

As one of our major fundraisers of the year, we will be supporting Rotary

Kurrajong North Richmond Inc. by selling tickets in their Monster Raffle. In

return, RHS P&C will profit a massive $4 from every $5 ticket sold and $7

from every lot of 3 for $10. We have tickets available at the Office. Check

out the prizes below:
