For wisdom is better than
rubies, and all things one may
desire cannot be compared to
her. Proverbs 8:11
A Mentor Moment:
Abigail—I Samuel 25
I Samuel 2:2-3
Now there was a man
in Maon whose busi-
ness was in Carmel,
and the man was very
rich. He had three
thousand sheep and a
thousand goats. And
he was shearing his
sheep in Car-
mel. 3 The name of
the man was Nabal,
and the name of his
wife Abigail. And she
was a woman of good
understanding and
beautiful appearance;
but the man was
harsh and evil in his
doings.
I Samuel 2:18-19
Then Abigail made
haste and took two
hundred loaves of
bread, two skins of
wine, five sheep al-
ready dressed, five
seahs of roasted
grain, one hundred
clusters of raisins, and
two hundred cakes of
figs, and loaded them
on donkeys. 19 And
she said to her serv-
ants, “Go on before
me; see, I am coming
after you.” But she did
not tell her husband.
If the story had read
“There once was a rich
man married to a beautiful
woman”... how would you
finish it? It sounds like the
beginning of a beautiful
romance, except
for one fact: the man
was not nice. It doesn’t
tell us if he was good
looking or old or ugly or
fat… just that he was
mean and evil. Even his
name, Nabal, means
“fool”.
The name Abigail means
“her father rejoices”, or “her
father’s joy”. But somehow
along he way, this beautiful,
intelligent woman ends up
married to a nasty, foolish
man. Luckily, she was
more than just beautiful!
A Beautiful Woman Married to a Bad Man
Abigail—Wisdom in Action
Situation:
David and his soldiers are
camped out on Nabal's
land, during a time of war,
protecting both Nabal’s
property and people. As
expected, David sends men
to Nabal to ask for food. In
return, Nabal refuses and
insults David.
David’s response:
He gathers 400 men and is
ready to kill every living
soul in Nabal’s house.
Abigail to the Rescue:
As quickly as Abigail gets
knowledge of the soldiers
coming to kill them all, she
tells her servants to gath-
er food supplies, and she
rides out on a donkey
where she throws herself
on the ground in front of
David. She knows that
David is about to shed
blood without reason.
She knows that David
(and Nabal too for that
matter) is flying off the
handle, running high on
his emotions, and about to
make a mistake from
which he will not recover.
Yet she apologizes. She
diffuses the situation, and
David calms down. And
David blesses her.
The end of this story:
Abigail waits to tell Nabal
what had transpired. He
was drunk… she waits.
When he sobers up, and
the truth is revealed, the
Bible says “his heart died
within him” (I Samuel
2:37). Ten days later,
Nabal is stuck dead by
the Lord, and in true ro-
mantic fashion, David
sent his servants to pro-
pose to Abigail, and she
became his wife.
Using Abigail’s Wisdom in My Life
Be prepared: This whole story wouldn’t have worked if she had no food to bring to David. I’m not saying you should have 200 loaves at the ready at all times, but whatever your particular battle is, make sure you have what you need before you get into it.
Give good advice: If you are in a place where you have to give advice make sure it’s worth of saying.
Use discretion: The wisdom that Abigail used in talking to David ended with him saying “Blessed is your advice”. WOW. I wish my advice was always received that way!
Apologize: Not her fault. And yet, she apologized. Let that sink in.
Wait: Wait until the moment is right. Don’t waste your words or your emotions on something that won’t be heard or be effective.
Happy Birthday!

Do-It-Yourself Spa Day Brown Sugar Lip Scrub
2 teaspoons brown sugar
1 teaspoon honey
1 teaspoon olive oil
Combine ingredients in a small missing bowl, adding or sub-
tracting ingredients to get the consistency you prefer. Mas-
sage on your lips for about 20 seconds and then wipe off.
The sugar exfoliates the dry skin, while the honey and olive
oil help moisturize your lips.
Homemade Bath Bombs
If you enjoyed the Bath Bombs we made to-
day, here is the recipe so you can make more:
1 cup baking soda
1/2 cup cornstarch
1/2 cup epsom salts
4 tablespoons cream of tartar
2-1/2 tablespoons coconut oil
2 teaspoons essential oil (lavender, jasmine,
whatever you like!)
Food coloring
3/4 tablespoon water
Plastic mold (fill-able ornaments, soap molds,
firm cupcake tins)
Stir the baking soda, cornstarch, Epsom salts,
and cream of tartar, together, making sure
there are no lumps. Then mix in coconut oil,
essential oils if you prefer a scent, and food
coloring. Press a small amount of mixture into
a ball. Place the ball in molds if desired, to
shape them, then remove them and let dry.
Once dry, you can wrap them in plastic wrap
until you ready to use them.
Note: it is important to use essential oils that
are designated for cosmetic use, as synthetic
oils designed for oil burners are not safe for
bathing. (you can omit scent altogether if you
prefer)
