WSD Bike Path Steeper seat tube angles better balance your weight over the pedals to maximize pedaling efficiency and power.

WSD Mountain

Women cyclists want the same performance as men but have different fit needs, so a unisex bike isn’t the right choice. Trek WSD bikes give you top technology, unsurpassed comfort and style that makes you want to get out and ride.

For Women Who Enjoy Life

WSD Road

The WSD DifferenceTrek offers more women-specific bikes than any other company.

Here’s why you’ll love yours:

Smaller grips and short-reach levers facilitate a more natural steering position to reduce hand and arm strain, and provide better handling and control.

Narrower handlebars accommodate narrower shoulder width resulting in less fatigue in your arms and shoulders.

Anatomically shaped saddles aren’t just comfortable—they provide optimal support and promote efficient leg movement.

Shorter cranks give you smoother pedal strokes.

WSD Fitness

Shorter top tubes help create a more natural, upright position. A less-stretched-out fit means minimal stress on your lower back, neck and shoulders.

Stretch Your Long Rides

Even with proper posture, a single position can become fatiguing on long rides. Mix it up with these on-ride exercises to keep you fresh no matter how long you’re riding that day:

First, Check Your Posture1. You should have a slight bend

at the elbows.

2. Your hands should naturally rest on the brake hoods without excessive bending.

3. Are your shoulders hunched? If so, come in and let us check out your bike fit and offer suggestions on improving it.

Change PositionsVary your hand position frequently. Bar tops are great for seated climbing, and drops for descending. Stand up for 15-30 seconds every 10 minutes or so.

RubberneckEmphasize a loose upper body by dropping your shoulders, flattening your back (roll your pelvis forward) and craning your neck slightly. Even a 15-second stretch helps loosen things up.

To The CoreStand up and flex your hips forward toward the stem to relieve your low back. Then reverse it by leveling your pedals and bending at the waist to almost touch your chin to the top tube—this will stretch your hamstrings.

* Note: Always do these stretches on a straight, level and lightly trafficked stretch of road.

Ride Like the Wind

There’s nothing more exhilarating than being part of a smoothly rotating group of riders trading the lead and flying down the road. But like a chain, a pace line is only as strong (and safe) as its weakest link.

Do• Match other riders’ time at

the front. Generally, the faster the pace, the shorter the pull. Always rotate off the same side as the other riders.

• Try to maintain the pace smoothly during your pull.

• Drop back before you’re tired, otherwise it can be hard to catch onto the back of the paceline.

• Communicate. Use hand signals to warn following riders of obstacles, debris on the road or turns. When you’re ready to pull off to, say, the left, gently flick your right elbow and look to the left before you pull off.

• Watch for dropped riders. A paceline can quickly outdistance a solo rider, particularly one who’s tired.

Don’t• Surge during your pull. This causes a

yo-yo effect at the back of the line and breaks up the smooth rhythm.

• Stare at the wheel in front of you. Look up the road ahead. A rise may slow the group. Obstacles can may be in the road.

• Brake suddenly. Instead, control your speed while drafting by coasting, sitting up, or lightly feathering the brakes.

• Stand up fast or make other sudden movements. When you stand, the bike moves backward underneath you relative to other riders and can overlap wheels, which is dangerous.

Be Smart: riding in a pace line requires total concentration; there’s no time for sight-seeing. try it first with a friend who knows the ropes.

The first American team to race the Tour de France was 7-11, in 1986. For 2010, ProTour teams RadioShack, Garmin-Transitions and Columbia-HTC are expected to receive TdF invites. In addition, US-registered BMC Racing, a Pro Continental team, will seek a wild card entry.

Every Madone Can Be Fitted For You

Pro Fit is developed for riders who prefer an aggressive riding position. It is best suited to athletes with exceptional core strength and hip flexibility.

Performance Fit has the same race-proven geometry, but features a 30mm taller headtube for a slightly higher hand position.

Fit for Every Body

Commuting and All-Season Riding

An old adage goes: there’s no such thing as bad weather—only bad equipment. But good equipment needn’t cost a fortune. A few affordable accessories keep your extremities warm and dry.

Your head loves your helmet vent’s cooling breeze, but not when it’s wet or too cold. A thin cap, earband or helmet liner stops the elements and retains body heat.

Protect your eyes and face with a visor and eyewear with lenses for low light. We can help select the best tints for various light conditions.

A simple scarf or neck gaiter makes a huge difference retaining heat and is easily stowed once you warm up.

Hands cool fast, especially when wet. Look for cold-weather gloves with a water-resistant or waterproof back and a high wrist covering, plus a grippy palm for control.

Feet get the worst of splashes, and toes chill easily. Ask us about booties to cover, insulate, and seal pant legs.

Keep road spray off your bike and body with fenders. Some new styles attach in just minutes without tools and fit virtually any bike.

Make it easy. You’ll ride more if your weather-gear “kit” is assembled and ready when you need it. Ask us about new lightweight shell clothing that’s weather resistant, highly breathable, versatile and packs easily.

A 2008 study of cyclists found that endurance capacity increased by 23 percent if the cyclists had access to a cold drink versus a warm one.

Self-adjusting Roc-Loc SL for a comfortable, secure fit

A great helmet fits so well it virtually disappears when you put it on. Lance Armstrong and other top riders choose Giro because of their 20-year history of crafting the best-fitting helmets in cycling and combining fit with a commitment to safety, style and comfort.

The World Leader in Fit, Style and Performance

Protect Your Lid

A proper cycling helmet is the most important piece of equipment you can buy, and we believe every rider should use one. Here are some simple steps to help make sure your helmet is comfortable and stays in top condition.

• Fit it. Helmets should sit level on the head, not tilted back. 1. Strap yokes should sit snugly

below the earlobe

2. Straps should be evenly taut.

3. Chinstraps should have just enough space to allow you to open your mouth and breathe freely.

• Clean it. Helmets get dirty, particularly from sweat. Simply wash yours in warm, soapy water—no special cleaners are needed. From time to time, your pads may wear out. We have inexpensive, easy replacement kits that can revitalize your helmet.

• Store it. Extreme heat and intense UV radiation can degrade your helmet. To keep your helmet in top condition store it in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight when you’re not riding.

• Replace it. Modern cycling helmets are cool, comfortable and very effective at helping to reduce injuries, but they are not indestructible. Inspect your helmet regularly for signs of damage (frayed straps, cracks, dents, etc.) and replace your helmet at the first sign of damage. We recommend that riders replace their helmets every 3-5 years to ensure the best performance and protective capability.

Numerous studies point out that as bicycle participation increases, injuries actually decrease. From 2000–2009, cycling in London increased 91%, while cyclist casualties in the same period decreased 33%.

Kids grow, and quickly. But they don’t have to outgrow their bikes. Trek’s Dialed Fit Specific approach adjusts to growth spurts. High-quality components and our expert Trek dealer assembly keep them running smooth. Concerned about size? Let our staff help find the perfect fit for your child.

Fit that Changes as Fast as Your Kids

Family Riding is More Family than Riding

Four Reasons to Buy Your Kid’s Bike From UsMass merchants can’t match our commitment to your child’s bicycle experience: safe, fun and dependable.

A quality bike is more fun to ride and built to last. It holds its value through several siblings. Big Box bikes are built down to a price.

Sizing and selection. Proper sizing is essential. Color and style also matter. We offer selection advice, plus assistance fitting helmets.

Assembly and service. Our experienced mechanics assure years of smooth, trouble-free operation.

Build a Love of Cycling• Bring sunscreen and clothes

that cover the skin. Helmets are mandatory. Make sure they drink plenty of water.

• Kids’ energy comes in bursts. Because kids have limited endurance, do short rides with lots of stops.

• Make rides easy. Avoid hills and headwinds. Kids get frustrated; don’t give them a reason to dislike cycling.

• Kids should know how to work their brakes and gears. We’ll happily show them.

• Kids’ bikes should be periodically re-fitted. We can help adjust saddles, handlebars and other parts so they’re comfortable and safe.

• Ride to fun places: parks and playgrounds, ice cream shops or whatever your kids enjoy. You’ll create a lifelong cyclist — and a great cycling buddy.

• Keep an eye on tire pressure. If it’s too low, they’ll roll slower and work harder.

• Set a good example. Wear your helmet too, and make sure their’s are well adjusted.

Gotta Have the BlingMake riding more fun and keep your child safe with kid-specific accessories from Trek and Bontrager. From helmets to gloves, packs and even computers, Trek and Bontrager make a complete line of accessories to outfit your child.

Mountain Bikes...You’re In For a Treat

Suspension: The most improved mountain bike component in the last 5 years. Before that, companies offered a handful of similar frame designs. Today, new technology invigorates full suspension design for improved performance under pedaling and braking, all while reducing weight. You can feel the difference.

Beyond speed. More important than riding faster is being able to ride smoother. Full suspension has been steadily perfected to deliver:

• A less fatiguing ride. All cyclists, especially older ones, perform better when isolated from bumps, drops, and holes. Full suspension enables more relaxed riding yielding as much as a 40% increase in energy output.

• More control: Because both wheels stay in continual contact with the ground, you have greater control.

• Lighter weight: Using advanced materials and designs with less extraneous bulk, today full suspension has no weight penalty.

• Increased dependability: The current generation has solved mechanical problems of earlier designs.

YOU are still the key component.

For steering and braking stability, keep your weight rearward and as low as possible on steep descents. Relax and look ahead at where you want to go, not at what you want to avoid.

Before mountain bikes were invented in the early 1970s, the French Velo Cross Club Parisien developed a remarkably similar sport—with fat tires, jumps and even suspension—as early as 1951.

Mountain Bike Hall of Fame

Special Edition features color-matched rims, grips, headset and seat

Active Braking PivotMost other suspension designs firm up under braking. Not ABP—Active Braking Pivot allows your suspension to function the same in all conditions. This means that your suspension can function the way it was intended, allowing you better, more effective braking. With ABP, you can brake later in a turn and maintain more control on steep descents. It’s the ABP difference, and it’s only available on Trek and Fisher mountain bikes.

Broad size range to fit riders of almost any height

6 SeriesReady for any off-road adventure. The lightweight Alpha Black aluminum frame handles nimbly on singletrack. 100mm RockShox suspension fork soaks up the bumps while Avid disc brakes stop strong, every time.

Fuel EX SeriesNot just more travel, smarter travel. The go-anywhere, ride-anything Fuel EX bikes are a rolling clinic in suspension design. Sturdy aluminum or OCLV carbon frames and Full Floater technology offer 120mm of supple travel on any terrain. Active Braking Pivot (ABP Race) keeps suspension active while braking for better control.

4 SeriesSteady as a rock. The 4500’s geometry offers more stable handling than race-level bikes, but Avid disc brakes and 100mm suspension fork make it trail worthy. Quality parts promise years of service.

Comfort From the Bottom Up

A bike seat bears at least 60% of your weight, so it’s crucial to make sure it’s comfortable.

• Seat height is the most important. If it’s too low, you’ll waste energy and strain your muscles because you can’t fully extend your legs. Too high and you’ll stress your knees and hips as you rock back and forth.

For proper seat height, aim for a slight bend in the knee at the bottom of the pedal stroke (crankarms parallel to the seat tube). Keep at least 3" of seatpost in the frame.

• Seat angle should be flat or angled downward no more than a few degrees. Angled back puts excess pressure on your pelvic area. Angled too far forward and you’ll fatigue your upper body keeping yourself perched on the seat.

• Fore-and-aft adjustment helps set your reach to the handlebars.

• Don’t Sit Still. Stand up every few minutes to stretch.

• Wear padded shorts. They may feel funny at first, but a good pair of padded shorts makes every ride more comfortable. Some modern styles look almost like regular street wear.

Trouble adjusting your seat? Uncomfortable no matter what? Come in and ask us. We’ll troubleshoot the problem and get you set up with the right gear for your rides.

For recreational bikes, the emphasis is on comfort and style—long wheelbases, padded and sprung seats, fat tires and, on some bikes, suspension offer a smooth ride, with easy-riding gearing and an upright position.

And if you want to go fast, Trek blends the best features of its road bikes, like speedy 700c wheels, with the confidence and control of flat handlebars and a broad gearing range.

Why Are Bike Seats That Shape?

Bike seats were adapted from horse saddles more than 125 years ago.

Their shape must support your weight and allow your legs to move freely. This need for unrestricted leg movement is why other shapes have never caught on.

Why do you need the nose? You don’t sit on it, but it’s crucial for controlling the bike in corners.

“Anatomic” seats feature flexible shells and channels to take pressure off the perineal area, the soft tissue, and put it onto your sit bones.

The paradox of padding. If it’s too soft, you can sink through to the hard base beneath and not have a firm enough platform to pedal from.

Ask us. What seems hard at first is often fine after a few rides.

If your seat’s too low, you waste energy, your legs tire more easily and you invite cramps.

If your seat’s too high, you stress your knees and chafe your rear as you reach down to complete each stroke.

The right seat height generally puts about a 30-degree bend in your knee when the crankarm is straight down and your foot is pointed down slightly.

The Ride of Your Life. Every Time you Ride.

When we created Cervélo TestTeam, developing better bikes was a top priority, not an afterthought. We wanted our pros to work closely with our engineers to fully integrate road-testing and computer analysis. When Heinrich Haussler stormed towards Tour de France stage victory in Colmar, he finished over 4 minutes ahead of the runner-up—a record for the 2009 Tour! Also a fantastic endorsement for our engineering team and their commitment to building the fastest bike. Not only for Heinrich but also for the ride of your life.

Every time you ride.

Performance, Comfort and BeautyJust because you don’t race doesn’t mean you can’t benefit from a pro level bike. The RS’s heads up geometry allows you to ride longer with more comfort than ever before, without compromising on the performance side like so many “comfort” bikes. So when you are still feeling strong at the end of your ride and decide to push your limits, your RS will support you all the way.

How to Fit Aero Handlebars

The best way to improve your aerodynamics is with a set of clip-on handlebars. Here’s how to set them up:

Set Reach Most aero bars have adjustable extensions. Set them so that your upper arms are perpendicular to the ground with your forearms resting on the pads and your hands can comfortably reach the end of the extensions.

Rotate Up And ForwardYou’ll need to push your seat forward on the rails to accommodate the forward position. Remember that this effectively lowers your seat, so you’ll need to raise it too. It helps to think of the seat as the end of a hand on a clock with the bottom bracket as its center.

Set WidthNarrower is better, but don’t constrict your breathing. Think of forming an arrow, with your elbows as close to directly behind your hands as possible.

Set The AngleIf you have a flat back in an aero position, flatter extensions are generally faster. If your back is rounded, point the extensions up a few degrees for better power and control.

PracticeAerobars compromise control since they put more weight on the front wheel. Practice riding in the position until you’re comfortable with it.

Think aheadYour hands aren’t near the brake levers, so never ride on aerobars on curvy descents or in traffic.

Got questions? We’re fit experts. Come in and see us to help set up your aerobars for an efficient, comfortable and powerful position.

Are Tubeless Tires for You?

Tubeless tires are a great way to avoid flats, increase traction and ride quality. Here are the various types.

UST. Universal Standard for Tubeless tires and rims must meet specific tolerances and must be certified to carry the UST label.

• Pros: The “set it and forget it” setups are the most headache-free way to go tubeless.

• Cons: Choice is limited and tires, which use a special coating to seal the rubber, can be heavy. Without sealant, UST won’t protect against punctures or cuts.

Conversion systems. Aftermarket rimstrips and liquid sealant can convert many standard tires and rims to tubeless. Sealant protects against punctures and small cuts.

• Pros: Almost limitless choice of wheel and tire combos; often lighter than UST.

• Cons: Doesn’t offer the bead-seat security of UST. Tricky to install—best for the experienced mechanic.

Tubeless-ready. A growing number of tires and wheels are marketed as tubeless-ready, meaning the rims are sealed and the tires can be easily converted to tubeless, but can run with tubes as well.

• Pros: Versatility—you can run them with tubes or tubeless. Easy conversion and lots of choice. The best compromise between UST and conversion systems.

• Cons: Lacks the bead-seat security of UST. Requires sealant, which can be messy.

Finish Long Ride Strong

Long rides are as much a mindset as a time frame or distance. You can make them all the more enjoyable by trying these tricks to stay fresh.

Eat up. Begin eating a half hour into the ride to keep your glycogen stores topped off. A mix of quick-release energy like gels and more filling foods (energy bars, fruit, cookies, even crackers) is the way to keep your stomach full and your legs powered up.

Plan a stop. Find a café or small restaurant en route where you can stop for some mid-ride refreshment. A few minutes to stretch the legs off the bike can do wonders to rejuvenate tired legs.

On-Bike RefreshersKeep fatigue and stiffness at bay by doing these easy on-bike moves.

• The neck roll: Slowly roll your head in a full circle to let the neck muscles naturally stretch out.

• The arm twist: On a straight, flat stretch of lightly trafficked road, sit up and hook one arm in the crook of your other elbow and draw it across your shoulder. Switch and repeat.

• Arm circles: Hold your arm out to the side and make gradually bigger circles.

• Foot scrunch: Combat hot spots in your forefoot by clenching your toes for a few moments inside your shoes. Extend and wiggle them.

It’s a little hard to believe that as recently as 2003, there was no Endurance Road category of road bikes. That changed when Specialized introduced its groundbreaking Roubaix, the first bike to blend comfort and performance without compromising either. Come in to see Specialized’s complete line of Endurance Road bikes. At every price, there’s a bike that will keep you riding longer, faster and having more fun than ever before.

How Endurance Road Geometry is Different Specialized made subtle but important changes to its Competitive Road geometry to create a bike that performs with the best but offers incredible comfort and control.

They start by lengthening the chainstays and wheelbase for a more compliant ride; careful attention to the carbon layup keeps it torsionally stiff for great power transfer. The head tube is 20mm taller for a more upright rider position, and head tube angle and fork rake are subtly adjusted for more stable handling.

It all adds up to a bike that’s built for whatever kind of road you ride.

Roubaix SeriesParis-Roubaix is the toughest one-day road race in the world—162 miles of crosswinds and cobblestones, mud and misery. To win, you need a bike that can take a pounding without passing it on to you but can still unleash a wicked sprint and handle telepathically. The FACT triple monocoque carbon frame features vibration damping Zertz elastomer inserts built into the seatstay for even more comfort. But this bike’s no noodle. With best-in-class torsional rigidity and a full carbon fiber fork with tapered steerer, it responds instantly when you put the hammer down.

Which System is Right for You?

Clipless pedals and shoes are the most efficient and comfortable connection to your bike you can get. But which is right for you?

Road. Typically has stiff outsoles for efficiency. Pedals are single-sided for light weight. Large platforms offer great stability and power transfer. Tread-free outsoles and exposed cleat systems aren’t great for walking.

Go with a road-based system if you’ll be spending most ride time on your bike and prize efficiency, power transfer and light weight.

Mountain. Shoes are balanced between stiffness and walkability. Pedals are double-sided for easy entry every time. Shoes and pedals are heavier. Less stability and power transfer efficiency on the bike, but far more walkable.

Go with a mountain-style system if you think you’ll be spending much time walking (especially on hard or uneven surfaces).

Check your cleats several times a season for wear, or if the connection between shoe and pedal seems loose. Cleats wear out over time and should be replaced.

When changing your cleats, clean the soles and mark the outline of the existing cleat in black marker—it makes for an easy, no-fuss replacement.

Although clipless pedals weren’t widely used until the late 1980s, the first version was invented in 1895.

CamelBak reinvented sports hydration in 1991 with its iconic pack. From that single pack, CamelBak now offers a complete system of products to keep you hydrated on any ride. Come in to see our wide selection of pack styles, plus replacement parts and cleaning kits. Are You Drinking

Enough?

Cyclists dehydrate faster than other athletes. A cyclist moves faster through the air, so evaporation of sweat is more rapid and less noticeable.

For maximum alertness and performance, drink regularly to replenish fluids lost by perspiration and respiration.

Hydration PacksThese popular packs are comfortable and let you drink without taking your hands off the handlebars or your eyes off the trail.

You’ll drink more because it’s convenient. By staying hydrated you’ll likely have reduced post-ride craving for snacks. Try it.

Sports scientists confirm that endurance, performance, and alertness are much greater when you drink enough.

Versatile hydration packs are also useful for many other activities.

To get the system that best suits your needs, think about:1. How much fluid you’ll need. For long

rides, especially in hot weather, you’ll want a pack to hold at least one liter for every hour you ride.

2. Consider practical issues: whether the reservoir is easily removable for filling and cleaning, the feel of the mouthpiece and the availability of replacement parts.

3. How much gear you have to carry. To carry clothes and food, the pack will need inside compartment space, external pockets and/or lash-on straps.

4. Pack features have the biggest impact on price and user satisfaction. Consider how the pack fits your body. Do you need a sternum strap and waist strap? Pockets greatly increase convenience. If it’s large, does it have compression straps for smaller loads?

Hydration needs vary by sport, intensity, weather and athlete. One general guideline: minimum rate of fluid replacement for marathon runners, from the American College of Sports Medicine, is 13.5 oz. of water per hour, during exercise.

Quality Over Quantity…

Why Do Some Helmets Cost More?

All helmets sold in the US must meet the same CPSC safety standards. So what do you get with pricey lids? Lots, actually.

Better fit. Higher-end helmets have nicer retention systems that are easier to use. They cradle your head and help keep the helmet steady so it doesn’t flop around.

Better cooling. Helmets with less material are often more expensive. That’s because they still have to meet those safety standards with less foam. That takes a lot of engineering and time, but results in a helmet that’s as cool—or cooler—than not wearing one at all.

Style. OK, we’ll admit it. A nice-looking helmet is fun to wear. If you’d wear the $150 model but not the base one, then get it—what matters is not why you wear it or what you paid, but that you do wear it.

So Which One? If you ride on singletrack, consider a visored model which can help deflect branches. If you ride in the city, consider a model with fuller protection in the back and even safety elements like reflective material or bright colors.

Remember, helmets are a one-use item—they don’t do multiple impacts. Replace them after any crash where you hit your head, even if there’s no visible damage.

Gary Fisher has always been a pioneer. From starting the first mountain bike company to backing the rise of 29" wheels, Fisher mountain bikes are synonymous with the sport. And as his 2010 line shows, Gary’s not slowing down anytime soon.

Are 29ers Right for You?

29" wheel bikes have been around for over a decade but are reaching a critical mass in the marketplace. If you’re intrigued by the size, here’s what you should know.

• Bigger rolls better. Because of their larger diameter, 29" wheels feature a lower “angle of attack” to rocks, logs and other obstacles. That makes them roll over them more easily and not get stuck and those 29" wheels stay rolling better for more momentum on the trail.

• No more compromises. During its infancy, 29ers suffered from nagging criticisms about lack of tire selection, overall weight, and sleepy steering. However, as 29ers became a booming segment with mountain bikes, tire and wheel choice exploded, weight was brought in-line with 26ers, and handling was addressed with 29er-specific fork offsets and geometry.

• A more stable ride. Many riders report more confidence riding 29ers in technical terrain because they feel like they’re riding “in” the bike rather than on top of it.

• Proven at the top level. Many racers today choose 29" wheel bikes. In 2009, 29ers were ridden to wins in the men's and women's National XC and Marathon Championships.

• Not just for tall riders. While many tall riders have gravitated to 29ers, smaller riders benefit equally from the increased stability and momentum. In fact, 5'2" Willow Koerber medaled at the 2009 World Championships on a Fisher 29er.

So is a 29er for you? Maybe. We can tell you what 29ers feel like but there’s no substitute for trying one out. Come in and check out our selection of 26" and 29" wheel bikes; we’ll help you choose the size that’s appropriate for you and your riding style.

Although it started as strictly an American advocacy group, the International Mountain Bicycling Association is now active in eight other countries including Spain, Australia and the Netherlands.

Gary Fisher may be synonymous with mountain biking, but for Gary, riding is a complete lifestyle —commuting, errands, lazy weekend jaunts on the path. For 2010, Fisher’s line of bikes is now complete with the new Cronus line of race-utility road models.

Safe in the City

Riding a bicycle to work or on errands is a great way to get a workout and save time. You’ll feel refreshed and energized rather than stressed. Here are a few tips to keep you safe and happy.

• Ride predictably. If there’s a gap in a row of parallel-parked cars, ride a straight line as if there were cars there. Motorists can be surprised if you weave back into traffic.

• Ride like a car. Signal turns and lane changes; use the left turn lane rather than crosswalks.

• Map out a route for regular commutes. Remember to check your city’s parks and open space department for bike paths that may not show up on maps. Ask us for recommendations.

• Block it off. Often you’ll find a quieter residential street one or two blocks away that parallels busy roads. It makes for a much nicer ride.

• Obey the law. If you run a red light with four drivers waiting, that’s four people who see cyclists as lawbreakers. To keep our right to the road, we also have to keep our responsibilities.

• Keep your bike yours. Even if you forget your lock on errands, there are some great ways to foil would-be thieves.

• Fasten your helmet strap through the front wheel and downtube to prevent quick getaways.

• At a bike rack, loop an abandoned cable lock around your frame so it appears to be locked.

• Remove the front wheel and loop the cable around it, or take the wheel with you.

A Great Season Starts with Goals

Modern training tools can radically transform your fitness. The best motivation you can find is a specific goal to keep you committed to a program. Make it your best season ever.

• Define Your Goal. It can be getting in shape for an event, hitting a specific time, or just losing a certain amount of weight. But it’s impossible to train effectively or devise a program if you don’t know what you’re training for.

• Get Expert Help. A training program to lose weight will be different than one aimed at a personal record on the bike leg of a triathlon. A coach can help design a training program that will help you meet your goal in the time frame you’ve allotted. If your goal is unreasonable or unsafe, he’ll tell you that, too.

• Follow Your Plan. Faithfully do the workouts on the right days. Indoor trainers can be a huge help, particularly at the beginning of a program, because their controlled environments provide consistent, reliable output. Plus, you can ride them any time and in any weather.

• Record Data. From a simple training log to today’s sophisticated tools, no program succeeds without careful monitoring of progress. You may want to track what you ate, how you felt after the ride, when you woke up or any number of variables in addition to how far, long and fast you rode.

• Consider Power Training. Power-based training is the most accurate possible measurement of your progress. Today almost all coaches work with power-based metrics. Faster, more consistent progress can be made with this approach.

Last February, 412 cyclists at Esporta Health Clubs in the UK set the record for the largest single indoor cycling class.

Look invented the modern clipless pedal in 1983. It’s never stopped innovating, with industry-leading breakthroughs like the first carbon fiber frame and now the Keo Blade. Look’s expertise with carbon fiber is the stuff of legend. Come in and see why, after a quarter century, Look remains a leader in clipless pedal technology and performance.

A History of Firsts That’s Second to None

Pedal and Cleat Care

Clipless pedals have greatly improved cycling, with a more secure and powerful connection between the bike and rider for better comfort and efficiency.

Clipless pedals work a lot like a ski binding, with similar sideways release. The release is a simple, easy motion, and makes cycling safer.

Proper installation is critical. Mounting a cleat in the wrong position can lead to overuse injuries. If you need help, come in to the shop for advice or a scientific fit session.

Pedals allow your foot to rotate (or “float”) slightly during the pedal stroke, which prevents injury. The amount of float you need depends on your pedaling style.

If you hear squeaking or it’s difficult to clip out, add a drop of lube to the release spring and the cleat face.

Many pedals have adjustable release tension to make it easier or harder to clip out. More experienced riders typically favor higher tension.

Check your cleats regularly for wear. If it’s easy to release or there is a loose feel between cleat and pedal, it’s probably time for a new one. We’ve got these inexpensive replacements at the shop.

Our best tip for cleat replacement: with a permanent marker, trace the outline of your old cleat before removing it, then install the new one over the old outline.

NEW Keo BladePut your best foot forward. Look swapped the traditional retention spring with a carbon fiber blade for 30% more secure retention and a smoother, more consistent entry and release than conventional pedals. $499

Options for 0, 4.5 and 9˚ of angular float

Oversize steel axle for flex-free sprinting

Keo ClassicYour ideal first pedal. With a lightweight composite body and the Keo’s reliable, easy engagement and release, the durable Classic is a perfect choice for upgrading to clipless pedals. $119

Keo 2 MaxHeavyweight performance in an ultralight package. The Keo 2 Max has 12% more contact area than the Keo Carbon for maximum stability. But at just 130g in a composite version, it’s still lighter than many competitors. $179

Sealed twin bearings and steel axle

Offered with Keo Grip cleats for better walking traction

Adjustable release tension and 0, 4.5 and 9˚ cleat options

Triple sealed bearings for smooth roll

In-molded stainless steel contact area is wear-resistant

Great Pedals Are Better With Great FitEven the best clipless pedal is better when fit to your personal pedaling style. Look’s Keo Fit system uses a magnetic sensor to measure precisely how much angular rotation, or float, you need to optimize efficiency and power and reduce the chance of injury. With that data, our shop’s expert fit technicians can determine your ideal cleat position and decide which of the three Keo cleats best suits your body.

Carbon fiber body and titanium axle for a low 95-gram weight

Although it has not seen a “home” rider win the Tour de France since 1985, France has a commanding lead of 36 all-time wins, with Belgium a distant second at 18.

Ideal use: • When you need energy, fluid and electrolytes that are easy on your stomach. If you can’t eat solid food while you ride hard, try an energy drink.

Turbo Charge Your Body

Bar vs. Gel

Energy bars and gels are both great ways to get a quick boost of energy, but they’re designed for different situations.

Energy bars are designed more for sustained energy. They are formulated to taste good and allow for longer, time-released energy stores. If you’re on a long ride, you’ll want bars as much for the taste and texture as you will for the fuel. Try several kinds to find a flavor you like; in this case, taste is every bit as important as nutrition—you won’t eat what you don’t like.

Energy gels provide a quick boost of energy. They’re especially good at staving off an impending bonk by quickly delivering fuel to the muscles and buying you some time to eat something solid (which takes longer to digest but will provide more sustained energy). They’re also good for a quick power surge for a climb or hard effort—some gels have stimulants like caffeine or guarana in them, which can be good for a jolt of energy but may upset sensitive stomachs.

Either way, pair bars and gels with plenty of fluids. For long rides and intense efforts, consider carrying bottles of energy drink along with water. Remember that the human body can only digest about 30–60 grams of carbohydrates an hour while exercising. Experiment to find out how much food you need, and how much you can handle without upsetting your stomach.

The hummingbird’s fast breathing rate, fast heartbeat (1,260 beats per minute), and high body temperature require that they eat often. Nectar consumption often amounts to 100–200% of their body weight (2–20 grams); insects add protein to their diet.

Energy Gels and Gel BlastsOn-the-go fuel. Squeezing a gel or enjoying an energy chew gives your muscles the POWERBAR® C2 MAX-dual source energy blend. You’ll be powered up for this trip—and the next. Energy Gels $1.29/pouch; $29.99/carton of 24 Gel Blasts $1.79/pouch; $19.99/carton of 12

•Use when: You need a quick shot of energy. Gels and Gel Blasts are satisfying yet easy on the stomach—a nice compromise between bars and drinks.

For a little extra boost look for flavors that contain 25mg •(equal to 6 oz. of a cola drink) or 50mg (equal to about one half cup of coffee) of caffeine.

Push Your Boundaries

Thrive, Don’t Just Survive, on the Group Ride

Riding in a group expands your fitness and appreciation of cycling and your local riding areas.

Pick the right ride. Some rides are essentially unorganized races. The other end of the spectrum is the bar-crawl cruiser ride. Want something in the middle? Come in and talk to us. We know all the rides in the area and can identify which is right for you.

Ask for help. There’s no shame in not knowing what to do. Once you find a friendly, supportive ride, ask fellow riders questions about drafting, taking a pull, riding in close proximity, anything that pops up.

The most common mistake new group riders make is not being a smooth member of the team. Make riding easier for the rider behind you by avoiding:

• Following the rider ahead too closely so you have to panic-brake if they slow down. Stay at least a foot away. The higher the speed, the greater the separation. Start at the back of the group while you’re getting comfortable.

• Braking, instead of simply sitting upright to have the wind slow you down.

• Not riding a straight line, so the rider behind you has difficulty staying on your wheel.

Mimic. Almost every ride has a leader or two. Watch them and learn from them—how do they point out road hazards? Slow the pack for a turn or stop sign? Mimic those behaviors when it’s your turn at the front.

When comfortable, start pushing. Stay in the pack for the first few rides. Once you feel you’ve got some experience, try taking a pull, bridging a gap or following a fast wheel on a descent. Group rides are invaluable for building skills and ending fitness plateaus.

Although a drawing of a crude bicycle appears in Leonardo da Vinci’s Codex Atlanticus, most scholars believe it was actually drawn by a pupil of his named Salai.

A Smoother, Quieter, Cleaner Ride

From grease to drivetrain lubricant to bike cleaners, every product is designed to keep your bike running its best.

Don’t lube here, it only attracts dirt

Do lube here to reduce friction

Take Care of Your Drivetrain

How Drivetrains WearThe incredible force drivetrains are under (up to 600 foot-pounds of torque) wears metal off the cassette and chainring teeth and the chain pins and rollers with every pedal stroke.

A dirty chain increases friction, meaning you have to replace parts more often. You can greatly extend drivetrain life with proper care.

Chain Care Dos• Use a quality lube, even on new

chains. New chains come with heavy factory lube, which is sticky and attracts dirt. A quality lube helps to “wash off” the surface of the chain and keep it clean.

• Lube your chain regularly. Put a drop on each link pin and backpedal to work it in, then wipe clean until dry. You’re lubing the pin connections, not the surface of the chain.

• Periodically use a brush or chain cleaner with a light degreaser.

• Use a rag and brush and clean gunk off your cassette, chainrings AND pulley cogs, or it will re-contaminate the chain.

Chain Care Don’ts• Soak your chain in degreaser. It just

leaches lubricant from the link pins.

Check Your ChainOnce a month measure your chain with a ruler or chain-wear indicator. A new section of 12 full links measures exactly 12". Replace your chain if it measures more than 121⁄16". Replace your cassette too if it’s more than 121⁄8".

A 1999 Johns Hopkins study found that the basic bicycle drivetrain is up to 98.6% efficient at transferring energy.

For 30 years, Yakima has focused on providing durable, functional solutions for going places with your gear. We can help you select the right rack to get the most out of all your adventures.

Ease Your Load

Integrated cable lock secures bike to rack

Opens for access to your vehicle

Preserve Your Gear: If you use a roof rack and normally park in a garage, place a cardboard box or other obstacle in your space before you leave. It will help remind you not to drive in with bikes on the rack.

Picking a Rack

Roof or Rear?Rear Mounted racks are easiest for getting bikes on and off.

• Strap-mounted rear racks are least expensive and go easily from car to car.

• Hitch-mounted racks have heavier duty construction, and expanded features including capacity to carry skis and cargo.

Roof rack systems are chosen by avid users with varied cargo needs: bikes, skis, kayaks and even excess luggage.

While roof-mounting bikes is a bit more difficult, they make for easier parking and access to trunks and rear doors.

Steps In Choosing A Roof System:1. Fit your car by asking us which

rack mounting feet fit your roofline or factory-mounted rack.

2. Fit your cargo. Start by considering how much you’d like to carry. That suggests the length of the crossbar you need. The specific items you’ll carry determine the types of carrier mount you’ll use to attach your cargo to the crossbars.

3. Choose security. Protect your rack and what’s on it with a variety of locks. Some are same-keyed for convenience.

Fork or Wheel Mount?Fork-mount racks are a time-tested design. They require front-wheel removal and may not work with all bike styles.

Wheel-mount racks are the most versatile, and fit almost any type and size bike. They are not as aerodynamic as fork mounts.

Safe and Secure on Your Car

Taking your bike on a road trip is a great way to expand your riding horizons and have new experiences. Here’s how to keep your bike safely and securely attached to your car for your entire trip.

• Lock it. Many racks come with either standard or optional locking accessories to keep your bike securely attached to your car. The gold standard: a system that locks your bike to the rack, and the rack to the car.

• Remove easily stolen items. For any easily removable item—a wheel, seatpost or accessory—you can’t secure with a lock, remove it and store it inside the car, preferably out of sight.

• Check tie-downs. Always double-check all attachment points for the rack itself—tie-down straps, hitch or bolts on roof racks—and straps or other attachments securing the bike to the rack.

• End the garage menace. Even a low-speed collision of a few miles an hour is enough to destroy a bike. An easy way to remind yourself is to place a box or other item just behind the door before you leave. If you have to get out to move it, you’ll notice your bike on the car.

• Away from exhaust. Most hitch and trunk racks today do a great job of keeping bikes safe and secure. But take care to ensure that wheels are held away from the exhaust, which can get hot enough to damage high-performance parts like carbon fiber wheels.

Bones SeriesThe original and still the standard by which all other trunk racks are judged. The Bones’ injection-molded arms and legs and arch design offer supreme strength and stability. The two-most effective safety aids are reflective clothing and flashing lights, according to a 2009 study in the journal “Accident Analysis and Prevention.”

Easy to install elastic mount

AA backup battery

In 1964, CatEye created the first blinking light, and a major progression in cyclist safety. Now, CatEye continues be a leader in promoting cycling as a solution with WorldCommute.com and bicycle lighting options to fit any need and budget.

Turn Night Into Light

Night Riding is Safer When You’re Seen

Some illuminating ideas:

• Flashing rear and/or side lights attract more attention than steady static beams, and because they’re off part of the time they lengthen battery life. Look for models that project light to the sides as well as behind you, as this increases visibility and safety.

• Position your rear light or lights where you’re sure motorists can see them—the back of your helmet or backpack are great. A seatpost also works, but don’t tuck it underneath your seat.

• Reflective tape is inexpensive and easy to apply. Protect your bike’s paint by applying it to your helmet, seatpost, or non-braking rim surface. Pedals, rims and shoe heels are great places to use it because the motion attracts drivers’ attention.

• Light-colored clothing is much more conspicuous. At least don’t wear dark colors at night.

• Avoid traffic fines. Ask us about the lighting laws.

• Ride with more care. Drivers often don’t expect to see cyclists at night.

LED technology has revolutionized bike lighting, making modern systems lighter, brighter and burning longer.

• Incredible illumination. High-output LED lamps and sophisticated reflectors maximize battery power for powerfully bright output.

• Efficiency. LED bulbs use less energy than traditional incandescents. That means longer battery life and smaller systems.

• Flashing patterns for safety. LED taillights offer several different flashing patterns to ensure drivers see you.

• Durability. LED bulbs are much more durable than traditional bulbs which can break or burn out easily.

• Check online. Magazine web sites and online registration sites can be great places to search for particular types of events or by date.

What to Look ForWhether road or off-road, several factors point to a quality event.

• Multiple loop options give you the flexibility to choose a distance that’s appropriate for you.

• Good support. Who sponsors the event? Will there be mechanical support and rest stops stocked with food and water? A post-ride banquet or schwag bag? What about directions and traffic control? These add to the cost, but full-featured rides can be more fun.

• Single or multi-day. For your first event, a one-day is a great choice. If you’re looking for more challenge, multi-day rides are a great way to enrich your cycling experience.

• For fun or a cause. A number of rides raise money for charities. Make sure you can commit to raising enough money to meet the required minimums.

Bicycling events in Colorado bring in more than $6 million for the state’s economy. Bicycle tourism overall accounts for $48 million in revenue.
