As a centerpiece of RN’s 2013 Centennial celebration, the Foundation is

publishing all ten of RN’s bestselling books—both in leather-bound and

paperback editions. He wrote more books than any President before his

time, and the books were on The New York Times bestsellers list for a

combined total of 67 weeks. Most popular was his extensive Memoirs. Other books

offer his commentary and counsel on both domestic and foreign policy questions.

The Richard Nixon Centennial Editions will be ready by Christmas 2012, and may

be ordered now in either boxed sets of all ten, or as individual volumes, in either an

elegant burgundy leather binding or in full color paperback. All sets have handsome

slip cases and a special foreword by President Nixon written in 1990 when the books

were first reprinted.

These will be wonderful holiday gifts for the reader of history, political science,

policy and public affairs—and the interested collector and the young historian in the

family.

YOU CAN ORDER the ten volume sets, or pick and choose individual titles which

focus on your interest. To refresh your memory, the books are:

Six Crises: RN’s 1962 account of his early life, Congressional career and Vice

With the one-hundredth

anniversary of President Nixon’s

birth coming soon, work is well

underway on a blockbuster

special centennial exhibit.

Highlighting the most important parts of RN’s

life and legacy, the exhibit will give Library visitors a

clear and compelling look at the remarkable life

of this extraordinary man.

The exhibit will provide a fresh, new view into

RN’s humble beginnings, his meteoric rise to

national prominence, his unmatched presidential

record of success in both domestic and foreign

affairs, and his incredibly productive life after he left

the White House.

Visitors will be fascinated by a collection of

fascinating artifacts never before exhibited in

public from all stages of RN’s life and career.

They will be able to stand in a re-creation of the

famous kitchen exhibit in Moscow where a young

American vice president bested the leader of the

Soviet Union in a lively debate that echoed around

the world and put RN on the world stage.

They will be immersed in a multi-media

sensory experience that evokes the turmoil facing

the United States when RN was elected president.

And they will come to know why Senator Bob

Dole referred to the second half of the 20th

century as “The Age of Nixon.”

With thanks to board member

Geoff Shepard.

We’ll kick off the Centennial year with two RN birthday

events. The first with free admission and a formal wreath laying

at the Presidential Library on Sunday, January 6. Then, on

January 9, Dr. Henry A. Kissinger will chair a fun birthday

gala in Washington in the Mayflower Hotel Grand Ballroom,

the venue of RN’s two Presidential Inaugural Balls. This will

be a major celebration, filled with Nixon family, old friends and

former staff members.

The January 9 dinner will also serve as the kick-off of the

The last three Nixon Legacy Forums—in April, May, and June—continued the

tradition of assembling distinguished panels of the men and women that

discussed one of the areas in which they worked during the Nixon

Administration.

The Legacy Forums are co-sponsored by the Nixon Foundation and the National

Archives, and each is taped for access by scholars and citizens at the Archives in

Washington and at the Nixon Presidential Library. Many of the Forums have been

broadcast on C-SPAN, and are available on demand in the C-SPAN video archive.

All the Forums can be viewed on demand at youtube.com/nixonfoundation.

Most of the past Forums have concentrated on RN’s domestic policies and legacies.

In April, at the Archives building on Pennsylvania Avenue, the focus broadened to

include RN’s significant—and still underappreciated—efforts to extend his “generation

of peace” in the Middle East.

The topic was: Waging Peace: Nixon and the Geopolitics of the Middle East. The

Moderator was Ambassador Dennis Ross, who has served as the Middle East advisor to

every President from George H. W. Bush to Barack Obama.

Participants included Bud McFarlane, who served as an aide to Henry Kissinger

on RN’s National Security Council. In 1983, President Reagan named Bud as his

National Security Advisor.

Two other Kissinger NSC alumni were panelists. Hal Saunders was HAK’s Senior

Advisor; he later served as Assistant Secretary of State for the Near East. Bill Quandt

was Hal’s deputy at the NSC; he is now Professor of Middle Eastern Studies at the

University of Virginia. The panel was completed by two Ambassadors. RN appointed

Richard Murphy to the Damascus Embassy in August 1974. Sam Lewis represented

the US in Israel, and is a former Director of Policy Planning at the Pentagon.

the pivotal role RN and the Nixon Administration played in the

relationship between Native Americans and the federal government. The

Forum title was: Restoring Rights for Native Americans. The Nixon policy of respect

for the sovereignty of Indian tribes and self determination replaced decades of a policy of

forced assimilation.

The University of Tulsa’s impressive Gilcrease Museum acted as the gracious

host. The moderator for both forums was Reid Chambers, the former Associate

Solicitor of the Interior Department’s Bureau of Indian Affairs.

Panelists at the morning session of Nixon administration policy makers included

Kent Frizzell, who was Solicitor and Undersecretary of the Interior; Wallace Johnson

(Assistant Attorney General for Lands and Natural Resources); Bobbie Kilberg (White

House Fellow and later Domestic Council Staff Assistant working on Indian affairs), and

Brad Patterson (Assistant to Len Garment).

The afternoon session comprised of Native Americans and others discussing the

legacy of the Nixon policies. Panelists included Robert Anderson (University of

CHAIRMAN

FROM THE

We are getting ready to celebrate PresidentRichard Nixon’s Centennial. It’s amazing toreflect back on all he accomplished for ourcountry. I was honored to be a part of his

administration. One of his insightful leadership concepts was toestablish the very first White House Advance Office. Before theNixon Administration took office, the function of the advance manwas hidden on the payrolls of various departments aroundWashington, DC. President Nixon wanted the office to belegitimized and brought into the White House. Bob Haldeman andDwight Chapin, on behalf of the President, asked me to be thefounding Director of that first Advance Office.

It was a struggle in the beginning for place and personnel.Eventually I was able to hire the men who came to be known as the“senior advance men.” Jon Foust, Mike Duval, Dewey Clower, BillHenkel and Mike Schrauth. They all contributed in ways thatcomplimented the strengths and weakness of each other. It’s atribute to each of them that the Advance Office became the “go-to”place for all things great and small. If we couldn’t provide theanswers immediately, we got them in short order. We had areputation for getting things done for anyone in the administrationwho asked. Remember, this was before computers, iPads and cellphones. With the help of Karen Reitz, Julie Rowe, MarshaGriswold, Sally Brinkerhoff and Nancy Spencer, we got things donethe old fashioned way: long days, short nights and hard work.

RON WALKER

RICHARD E. MARRIOTT, (left) son of J. Willard and Alice S. Marriott, is shown a photograph of his parents with the Nixons at the White House byFoundation President Sandy Quinn. The photo is in the Marriott Room in the Foundation’s Argyros Suite. The room was a gift of the Marriotts, who served as co-chairs of

RN’s two Presidential Inaugurations. Mr. Marriott was on a tour of the Library, grounds and archives.

THE WHITE HOUSE HIS FATHER BUILT RN’s birthplace turns 100! The centennial celebration featured a day of fun programming that included portrayals of RN’s parents Frank and Hannah, and other influential figures in his young life; a 35 member chorus and a barbershop quartet; antique cars; remarks by local dignitaries; appearances by relatives of

former birthplace residents; and talks about the history of the house. Guests were also invited to put their names in a time capsule buried in front of the birthplace.

THE USA NETWORK FILMED an episode of its upcoming television series "The Moment" in the East Room. 40 VIP guests were joined by the guest

of honor, Ambassador Qiu Shaofang, Chinese Consul General of Los Angeles, for a White House style dinner. Above, Foundation President Sandy Quinn and Ambassador

Qiu Shaofang toast the 40th anniversary of RN's trip to China.

PRESIDENT LINCOLN DAZZLED A CROWD OFYOUNGSTERS AND THEIR PARENTS during one of the

Foundation’s six Meet the Presidents programs. The educational summer seriesincluded Presidents Washington, Lincoln, Roosevelt, Jefferson, Nixon, and First

Lady Pat Nixon.

(Left to Right) Bill Henkel, Mike Duval, Jon Foust, Ron Walker, Mike Schrauth and Dewey Clower.

Today, the Obama “Office of Scheduling and Advance” is listedprominently on their website, but I was unable to find out howmany people that office employs today. I think it is a sure bet to sayit is much bigger than ours was.

We lost Jon Foust recently and Mike Duval several years ago. I referred to Jon as my “junk yard dog” and I meant it in the mostpositive way possible. I could give Jon the hardest, most difficult, assignments and he always delivered. When the Committee to Re-elect the President (unfortunately usually referred to as CREEPtoday) faltered in the area of advancing Tricia and Julie and ourdiverse group of surrogates, I sent Jon over to run their advanceoperation. He must have hated having to leave the White House, but he marched over to the Committee and along with Bill Moeller, provided the leadership that was needed and necessary.

There are countless other examples of excellence that was JonFoust, and yes he was abrupt, he was tough, he was loud and he wasgood. He was also my friend. He helped me and President Nixonmake history.

BESTSELLING AUTHOR, COMMENTATOR ANDRN DEPUTY SPECIAL ASSISTANT BRUCEHERSCHENSOHN returned to the Library to discuss his book

Obama’s Globe: A President’s Abandonment of U.S. Allies Around the World.

“What you will see here, among otherthings, is a personal life. The influence ofa strong family, of inspirational ministers,of great teachers. You will see a politicallife, running for Congress, running for theSenate, running for governor, running forpresident three times. And you will seethe life of a great nation; 77 years of it.”
