001 Vortex Tower:Hotel + sky garden.Fall 2012, Competition Studio
Re-imagining the current state of the skyscraper by design-ing a hotel and sky-garden that pay special attention to sustainable strategies and the culturally rich context of Manhattanville, New York. The skyscraper consists of two interior streets, an interior park and hotel/office space, that spiral upward toward a publicly accessible sky-garden at the zenith, overlooking the hudson to the West and Manhattan in all other directions.

When you travel to New York City, you experience
the concrete jungle and forget the natural envi-
ronment. The people who live in the city have lost
their connection to nature. This skyscraper serves
as a catalyst to bring the natural environment back
to the city. This organic street pulls from two exist-
ing conditions. One is the green space; Riverside
Park and West Harlem Piers Park. The other is the
urban condition of 125th street as it bisects the strict
New York grid. This skyscraper serves as the nexus
between these two conditions that flow up through
the building’s form.
The building rotates 90 degrees as it rises to take advantage of optimal views over
neighboring buildings.

Sky garden
Life is the busiest at the bottom where the strongest connection
to Broadway is located. As one ascends, the program becomes
increasingly private. When a person reaches the end of the street,
it is not a dead end. They are greeted by the sky garden that is
perched near the top of the tower and take in the panoramic views
of the city.

Kulturhuset is a new cultural center along Frederiksberg Alle, grand boulevard, which runs south of Copenhagen. The building incorporates a theater, library, art gallery and restaurant above the proposed site for a metro station connecting Fredericksberg to the established metro city ring.

Frederiksberg Alle has many Proscenium type
theaters. Kulturhuset has a arena theater with a
central stage and with a public accessible view-
ing area in the art gallery so that performances
can be seen from gallery level free of charge. The
theater is also naturally daylight by a large glass
dome.

Old derelict sporting and fishing nets along with vinyl ban-
ners have no eco-friendly disposal procedure. They currently
are dumped into landfills were they are none biodegradable
and litter the landscape. This project aims to highlight environ-
mental alternative disposal methods by the creation of “zero
waste”sunshade that can be up cycled out of sporting nets and
vinyl banners.

We set out to augment a space using laser graffiti to create a personal experience that, from the vantage point of those within it, is more dynamic and engaging than the original.
To achieve this goal, the laser drawing was recorded and translated through computer coding into a graffiti style. This evolving artwork is projected onto surround-ing surfaces and mirrors to further distort the limits and engage one’s perception within our authored environ-ment. This results in a series of moments that blur the lines of reality and open one’s eyes to what it means to respectfully alter an inhabitable space.

The Fallingwater Design-Build Studio was a hands-on experience to explore sustainable design and architectural craft practices at Fallingwater. The studio focused on three projects:
•The first project being an investigation of architecture as an extension of the hand by designing a mallet.•The second project involved the design and construc-tion of an architectural screen, situated to provide a visual barrier along the Fallingwater maintenance complex. •The third project involved a proposed expansion and programming improvements to the Kirkpatrick House, a guest residence on the Fallingwater property just north of the main house.
Mallet:Architecture as an extension of the hand
The studio began by looking at architecture as a craft; design by feeling and commanding the material. The mallet is designed to be a tool that functions as an extension and specialization of the hand, altering the hand’s natural powers and capacities.
The mallet is designed for the hand to gently articulates the handle; dissolving the boundary between the hand and the mallet.

Screen Proposal:Design of architectural screen
Adjacent to the public driveway leading to the visitor center, the screen design is intended to dematerialize and blend in with the dappled light and colors of the Hemlock and Laurel foliage, ob-scuring views of staff parking on the other side. A discreet gateway moves through the middle of the screens allowing staff to pass by.

Kirkpatrick Addition:Three season expansion + improvment
Addition to the Kirkpatrick Guest House. The Addition Provides a three season multi purpose space, that follows the contour of the land while taking advantage of the mountain views down the ridge.
