Languages

English I grew up in England and have lived in the U.S. for 25 years. I have dual citizenship. Americans say that I have a British accent and British people say that I sound American. I write in American English and lecture on varieties of American English.

Italian I lived in Italy for five years. I have given lectures to university audiences in Italian, I read modern Italian literature, and I email friends in Italy.

Mandarin My wife and I joke in Mandarin Chinese at home, and I used to write letters to her in Chinese. I read simple Chinese short stories, and I participate in conversations with Chinese friends.

German I have lived and taught in Germany for several periods, I was on a doctoral commission for a student at the University of Marburg, and I have participated in faculty meetings at the University of Düsseldorf. I enjoy chatting with German friends and know the grammar of the language quite well.

Cantonese I lived in Hong Kong for four years. I have a Certificate in Intermediate Cantonese from the Hong Kong Government Language Training School. I enjoy ordering meals and chatting with wait staff at restaurants in Chinatown.

French I studied French at school and can make my way around France with little difficulty.

Spanish I enjoy reading modern poetry in Spanish (Neruda, Lorca, and the Andalusian poets). When I chat with Spanish friends I use my knowledge of Italian strategically to overcome weaknesses in my Spanish.

Hmong I studied for a short time with a Hmong instructor and learned a little about Hmong phonetics.

Bio Narrative

Richard F. Young is professor in English linguistics and second language acquisition at the

University of Wisconsin-Madison, where he teaches courses in sociolinguistics, English syntax,

language acquisition, and research methods. He has served as co-director of the Doctoral Program

in Second Language Acquisition and director of the Program in English as a Second Language. He

is currently visiting professor in English language and literature at the National Institute of

Education in Singapore.

Richard was born and grew up in London and, after graduating from Oxford with a degree in

Philosophy, Politics, and Economics, he taught in Italy and Hong Kong before settling in the

United States in 1983. His Ph.D. is from the University of Pennsylvania and his dissertation was

the first extension of quantitative variation theory to interlanguage. Since then, his abiding

research passion has been to understand the relationship between the use of language and the social

contexts that language reflects and creates. He has always seen that relationship as dynamic and

reflexive, and his research has focused on change—how newcomers learn to participate in the

practices of a new community. His fascination with the relationship between language and context

has led him to do work that crosses conventional boundaries between academic fields. His work on

discourse variation in oral proficiency interviews combined discourse analysis and language

assessment and resulted in some of the earliest empirical discourse analyses of interactions

designed to assess spoken English proficiency. In his most recent work he has been using insights

from linguistic anthropology and conversation analysis to understand the architecture of face-to-

face interaction and to develop the theory of discursive practice.

His research has resulted in four books: Variation in Interlanguage Morphology (published by Peter

Lang in 1991), Talking and Testing (co-edited with Agnes He and published by Benjamins in 1998),

Language and Interaction (published by Routledge in 2008) and Discursive Practice in Language

Learning and Teaching (published by Wiley-Blackwell in 2009). He has published over 50 articles

in journals and anthologies and serves on the editorial boards of three major journals.

Richard has held visiting professorships at Pennsylvania State University, International Islamic

University Malaysia, and at two universities in Germany. During 2005–6, he served as President of

the American Association for Applied Linguistics and chaired the 14th World Congress of Applied

Linguistics in Madison. Up until 2004, he served as a consultant to Educational Testing Service

during the major redesign of the TOEFL test.
