RICHARD BARBER ACCEPTS HARVEY W. SMITH CHAIR

About three years ago, DUML let Dick Barber get away.

Now Lab officials have hooked Dr. Barber again, using a Chair as bait to lure him away from the post he left Duke to take.

Dr. Barber has resigned as Director of the Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute (MBARI) in Monterey, CA. Effective July 1 he took over the Harvey W. Smith Chair of Biological Oceanography at DUML.

According to Joe Ramus, DUML Director, the Chair is a distinguished professorship established by the late Evelyn Smith of Beaufort in honor of her late husband.

The Chair is a perfect fit for Dr. Barber, because he and Mr. Smith knew each other well.

"I'm delighted," Dr. Ramus said. "He will be a real magnet for our new oceanography program.

"He is a national figure. It is a great kudos for Duke to get him."

Dr. Barber said that the Harvey W. Smith Chair had been a powerful attraction.

"I'm honored to have the opportunity," he said. "It's the culmination of my work to get a position like this."

Dr. Barber said that MBARI's research program is geared toward deep sea research, because the ocean is very deep near the California shore.

By contrast, the Duke program will focus on the role of the ocean and ocean processes in atmospheric changes.

Dr. Barber said his research has been moving in this direction in recent years. For example, he has done important research on El Nifio, the Pacific Oceandriven weather anomaly that is believed to have wreaked havoc on East Coast weather several years ago, triggering unusual torrential downpours.

Dr. Ramus said that in addition to research, Dr. Barber would be teaching at least two classes at DUML. One will be on oceanographic processes and another will be on the role of oceans in global change.

This pleases Dr. Barber.

DUML CURRENTS This summer's COCOS Lecturer was

PROF. HANS FLUGEL, staff member of the Institute of Oceanography of the University of Kiel, Germany. In addition to his lectures on a relatively littleknown marine invertebrate, the Pogonophora, Prof. Flugel discussed the development of the research programs of the Institute and shared the results of his explorations on a coral reef in the Pacific. His final lecture dealt with the work of his friend and contemporary, American artist Andrew Wyeth. Prof. Flugel remained in Beaufort into the fall, allocating his time between writing scientific manuscripts and painting.

In August MARK GEESEY completed his Masters degree titled "Subsurface chlorophyll maximum layers: An analysis of phyto plankton species composition with a general review." Since May, Mark has been working at the NOAA Laboratory.

SYDNEE GODDARD directed the Earth Day planting of ten Live Oak trees donated by the DUML community. She also taught a course to 7tq-9th grade girls for the National Science Foundation Young Scholars Program.

BILL HENLEY and visiting French researcher GUY LEV A VASSEUR traveled to two national meetings this summer to present results of ongoing NSF-sponsored research in the DUML seaweed physiology facility known as the Phycotron. Graduate student LINDA FRANKLIN also presented her research at the Phycological Society annual meeting. Before the meeting, Bill and Guy visited Duke Geology/DUML graduate JOHN HALFMAN. John, Barb, Sam, Marie and Camille are doing quite well by all accounts.

ANN OLIVER was a Teaching Assistant in August for the Fish Biology class at Bermuda Biological Station.

KATHY REINSEL participated in a cruise on the RN Edwin Link with the Johnson Sea Link this summer. KATHY has received the Graduate School's Dean's Award for Excellence in Teaching. A certificate and a check will be presented to her at the University

Founder's Day ceremony in December.

DAN RITTSCHOF visited the University of Hawaii in October. He consulted on nontoxic antifouling studies and presented seminars. He visited past Duke students VALERIE WORKINGER and OWEN MCMILlAN.

PEGGY SEARS completed her Masters degree, titled "Endocrine Control of Feeding Behavior in the Sand Fiddler Crab Uca pugila tor."

JOHN SUTHERLAND is spending his sabbatical at the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration in Washington DC.

The 2nd annual Mollusc Man/Woman Triathlon was held on August 3. Organized by CRISTINE KRATT, JEFF and SYDNEE GODDARD and aided by scores of other volunteers, the 1/4 mile swim, 8-mile bike, and 4-mile run was once again a success!

SHIP NOTES There have been some changes in

personnel in DUNCOC since the last issue of CURRENTS was published. The new Marine Superintendent is QUENTIN LEWIS, former Master of the FIRST MATE. Also newly hiied in shore operations is KAMMY TRIBUS as Data Archivist. On board CAPE HATTERAS, JAY VENGER has resigned after eight years to live with his wife and family in the Virgin Islands. His replacement on the deck has come from the ship's galley in the form of former cook/messman, BYRON BOYER. The new man in the galley is JIM CLONIGER. Jim is on CAPE HATTERAS to help maintain her reputation as one of the finest floating three-star restaurants around.

MARRIAGES ... TOM JOHNSON and KATE

WHITAKER were married June 2nd in Centerville, MA. After a "honeymoon cruise" aboard the CAPE HATTERAS, they are settling in to Beaufort living.

-2-

On September 11th PEGGY SEARS and BILL KROEN were married. They are now living in Raleigh.

The Persian crisis set upon CINDY BALDWIN and her intended, SSgt Lee Adams, in August. Instead of the planned October wedding, a quick civil ceremony was performed on August 11th. Cindy is now addressed as Mrs. Adams!

BABIES ..• Since the last printing of CUR

RENTS the baby population of DUML has increased by five. Son William was born on April 28th to TONY and PAT CLARE. Nicholas joined the family already started by MARY and Jeff Jones on June 18th. Sarah Agnes Kenney is the apple of her parents, BRUCE and SUSAN's eye. She was born on June 15th. On July 31st WOODY SUTHERLAND's family grew to include Skye McKenzie. And, finally on October 6th Chelsea Amelia was born to CHRIS SCHOLZ and his wife Carrie.

"One of the biggest things I didn't like at MBARI was that I did not get to teach," he said. "It is not a teaching organization."

"While I was there I gave about four lectures to undergraduates. It became obvious to me that I was looking forward to them. I hadn't realized that I enjoyed students so much."

Until his departure from Duke, Dr. Barber was deeply involved in environmental causes in the state. He served on the N.C. Environmental Management Commission and is generally credited for pushing through the state's first st9rm water runoff regulations.

He called this type of work rewarding because "your wins and losses are immediately obvious," and said he hoped to become involved again.

Dick and his wife Elaine arrived back in Carteret County in June.

ERIC NELSON RETIRES After 22 years of service to the

DUML, Eric Nelson retired June 1, from his position as the Marine Superintendent of the Duke/UNC Oceanographic Consortium.

Eric began his career in 1968 when he was hired as the Assistant Marine Superintendent aiding the Marine Superintendent John Newton in the operation of the EASTWARD. At that time, the Cooperative Oceanographic Program was in need of a professional "Highseas" mariner to provide skill and experience to a program that was expanding from regional work around the southeast coast to general purpose oceanography on the high seas from Nova Scotia to Venezuela. Eric's impeccable credentials in the Merchant Marine combined with his interest in a "shore job" in his native Carteret County made him the perfect choice.

In addition to being a professional , merchant seaman, Eric is also a member

of the Nelson family of Gloucester. The Nelsons have been working on the water as long as anyone can remember, so Eric probably had an interest in the sea from the time he was born.

Eric's professionalism and, yes, his perfectionism were an important addition to the EASTWARD program. The EASTWARD was staffed by crew and officers from Carteret County who were, for the most part, former fishermen and Coast Guardsmen. They consider themselves the world's best inshore and coastal seamen, but the EASTWARD was beginning to cruise to the Caribbean for three months at a time.

When John Newton left the Cooperative Oceanographic Program in 1975, Eric was promoted to Marine Superintendent. He served in this capacity until his retirement.

Under Eric's able guidance the EASTWARD eventually roamed as far east as the Mediterranean Sea with work off the coast of Algeria, as far north as Nova Scotia, south through the Panama Canal to the coast of Peru and west of the Galapagos Islands. The EASTWARD went into Venezuela's Lake

Maracaibo and up the Orinoco River, regions where few oceanographic ships have ventured. EASTWARD never failed to get home under her own power despite the far-flung and perilous places that scientists asked Eric to send the ship.

Obviously Eric and EASTWARD were a good team, so good, in fact, that on the basis of their record the newly formed Duke/UNC Oceanographic Consortium won a competition to operate a new NSF ship.

Eric supervised the construction, outfitting, sea trials and delivery of the vessel. The new ship, named CAPE

-3-

HATTERAS, was delivered in early October 1981 and began its first year of operation the following January.

Eric, always the consummate professional, followed Henry Ford's rule, "Never explain; never complain."

Eric always looked ahead, never made the same mistake twice, never gave excuses and ended up with the best managed small ship operation program in the U.S.

The Duke community and the community of oceanographers will miss Eric, but both groups know they benefit

sed from his service with EASTWARD and CAPE HATTERAS.

ERIC HOLM ('90 Ph.D. Zoology) successfully defended his thesis, "Settlement Site Choice in the Barnacle Balanus amphitrite: Demographic and Evolutionary Consequences," in March. His thesis advisor was Dr. John Sutherland. After his defense Eric spent a short interval working in Dr. Daniel Rittschof's laboratory on Navy supported nontoxic antifouling research. In September, he began a postdoctoral position at the Universite Laval, Quebec, Canada, in the laboratory of Professor Edwin Bourget. Eric's research there involves the population dynamics and genetics of barnacles.

LYNDA SHAPIRO (Ph.D. '74 Zoology) completed her graduate work with Dr. Richard Barber at DUML. This past summer, she took a course in molecular probes in marine ecology at Woods Hole. She wrote that the course was GREAT. She has now departed for Coos

by DR. C.G. BOOKHOUT

Bay, Oregon, where she will move into her new position as Director of the Oregon Institute of Marine Biology, the marine laboratory of the University of Oregon.

DR. JONATHAN RICHARDSON ('65 Ph.D. Zoology; Summer, '61, '62), was recently appointed Interim Director of the North Museum at Franklin and Marshall College, Lancaster, PA. He will continue as professor of biology at F&M, where he has taught ecology since 1966. Recently he developed a summer field course in river system ecology that traces the biology and chemistry of the Susquehanna from source to mouth.

ALICE ELMORE RICHARDSON ('62 BS Botany), a research assistant in marine mycology at DUML with Dr. Terry Johnson in 1960-61, married Jonathan Richardson in 1963, raised two children and returned to graduate school to earn a masters degree in Landscape Architecture. Employed since 1985 at an engineering & consulting firm in Lancaster, PA, she developed the company's program in wetland delineation and mitigation.

DR. ROBERT H. HOLZWORTH ('42 AM, Zoology) completed his Mas-

-4-

ter's thesis on respiration of the diamond-back terrapin at DUML under Dr. A.S. Pearse in 1942. At the same time he romanced Lois Ann Alexander, a UNC graduate student, who was working at the U.S. Bureau of Fisheries Laboratory. She is now his wife of 4 7 years.

He enlisted in the Army in 1942, staying for 30 years. After WWII (Europe), he went to Medical School, finished his internship, and had his residency training in OB-GYN in Walter Reed A.M.C. After retirement, he was Director of the Medicaid Program in Alabama for a number of years. He and his wife are now living in Tabernash, 85 miles northwest of Denver, co.

EVELYN BROWN SHERR ('74 Ph.D. Zoology; '71-74 DUML) and her husband, Dr. Barry Sherr, have moved from The Marine Institute of University of Georgia, Sapelo Island to the College of Oceanography, Oregon State University, Corvallis. Evelyn and Barry will be "splitting" one Associate Professor position as a husband and wife team in marine microbial ecology.

CONTRIBUTIONS TO ANNUAL FUND AND ENDOWMENTS REACH A NEW HIGH

It is a pleasure to inform you that the seventh Duke University Marine Laboratory Annual Fund Drive for the 1989-1990 fiscal year was a success. The total of $155,841 was 55% greater than the 1988-89 total of $100,466. Furthermore, the number of contributors increased by 23% from 642 to 792.

During the seven years in which there has been an Annual Drive, the number of contributors and the amount given have increased each year. Year Number Of Contributors 83/84 300 84/85 315 85/86 371 86/87 525 87/88 568 88/89 642 89/90 792

We thank all contributors who are responsible for the in crease in donations: members of the advisory board, alumni of Duke and DUML, faculty and staff, and many staunch friends of the Laboratory. The honor roll of contributors is given in this issue of DUML News.

For 1990-91, we have set a goal of $175,000 from 925 donors for the Annual Fund Drive. Achieving this goal will be a stretch but with your assistance, we can be successful.

This past year has been one of transition. The imminent approval of the Section in Marine Biology, Oceanography and Limnology together with an increased number of students at DUML have added new life to the Pivers Island community. At the present time, faculty at the Assistant or Associate Professor level in geological, chemical and/or physical oceanography are being sought for DUML. Start-up funds will be needed for this new faculty, and instrumentation funding

will be needed for new courses. The DUML Annual Fund monies in 1990-91 will be used to meet the demands of SiMBOL not included in the budget. They will also be used as in 1989-90 to support the operation of DUML and all of its programs whenever there is a need. We need your help to meet the extra demands for funds in 1990-91. Hence, I would like you to consider a generous contribution to DUML Annual Fund. Thank you for your loyalty and generosity.

ENDOWMENTS

The contributions to scholarships, fellowships, and other endowment funds for 1989-90 fiscal year was $581,304, an increase from $83,224 for last year. A breakdown of the 1989-90 contributions is listed below:

We are pleased that Mr. Stephen C. Harward and his wife Cora Lynn Y. Harward have recently created an endowment

with Duke University in memory of her parents, Thurman L. and CarolS. Young. The income, but not the principal, will be used to provide unrestricted support of the Duke University Marine Laboratory as deemed best by the Director of DUML. This endowment is the twenty-fourth for support of DUML and the third in 1989-90.

It is gratifying to report that Mr. Smith Holcomb donated $17,126.88 to his endowment and Mr. and Mrs. David Perry and their friends contributed $11,025.00 to the Laura Grierson Scholarship. This scholarship now equals $25,000 and will be used to provide scholarship awards to promising undergraduates engaged in independent studies at DUML.

All of these contributions are greatly appreciated, but except for a few instances they did not generate enough interest to equalize the 7% increase in tuition. Thus DUML will be limited to fewer scholarships in 1990-91. Hopefully, in the upcoming drive, there will be enough contributions, not only to equalize the anticipated increase in tuition, but also to offer additional scholarships and fellowships.

It will be years before the interest from endowments and scholarships will render DUML self-sufficient, but the future success of our Laboratory depends upon an endowment of at least $15 million. With the recent contributions of Dr. Harold McCurdy to the Mary Derrickson McCurdy Scholarship and Visiting Scholars Endowment Funds, DUML now has an active endowment total of $2.6 million with an additional $1.1 million being held in trust.

We hope the 1990-91 Endowment Fund Drive will reach our goal of $500,000.

We thank the Advisory Board and all our donors for their past contributions and interest in Duke University Marine Laboratory. We could not continue to function without you.

FROM THE BOATHOUSE

Of all of the signals of change at the Marine Laboratory, the most salutary is an announcement which appeared in Science, Eos and E-mail last month: "Duke University will appoint three tenure-track faculty at the Assistant or Associate Professor level in geological, chemical and/or physical oceanography. The faculty will be resident in Beaufort at the Marine Laboratory. Candidates with sea-going programs are particularly encouraged to apply. The appointees will be expected to develop aggressive research programs and contribute to Duke's developing curriculum in the ocean sciences."

Richard T. Barber, the Harvey W. Smith Professor of Biological Oceanography, is chair of the search committee. Members include Profs. Tom Johnson (Marine Lab & Geology), Bruce Corliss (Geology), Dimitri Alexandrou (Electrical Engineering) and Dan Livingstone (Zoology). All members are oceanographers save the latter, who is a limnologist. Only two of the five are Marine Laboratory faculty.

The membership of the Committee is more than ecumenical symbolism. Oceanographers can best search for oceanographers. Further, all have committed to becoming plankholders in the new university Section in Marine Biology, Oceanography and Limnology (SiMBOL).

In the lexicon of University structure, a Section is a provisional depart-

by: JosephS. Ramus

ment, but functions as a department. SiMBOL faculty will be recruited from Arts & Sciences, Engineering, Medicine and Forestry & Environmental Science. The Marine Laboratory will serve as a facility of the new department, and cease to be de facto the University's Program in Marine Science.

The new oceanographers will be appointed to SiMBOL. These organizational changes are perhaps the greatest departure from tradition in the Marine Lab's 52-year history.

Interestingly, SiMBOL serves a long range plan committed to paper by Prof. C.G. Bookhout and faculty in 1960, and delivered to the National Science Foundation as a proposal for an oceanography program. Part of the proposal gave birth to the RN EASTWARD and the RN CAPE HATTERAS programs. The other parts of the proposal will only now, 30 years later, be formally implemented as a coherent University program in the ocean sciences.

Duke is strongest in marine biology and marine geology, and weakest in chemical and physical oceanography. The successful addition of three junior oceanography faculty will lead to a fourth. The new faculty, combined with existing University faculty, will.allow the development of a process-oriented core curriculum in the ocean sciences, including biological, chemical, geological and physical oceanography.

DUKE UNIVERSITY MARINE LABORATORY PIVERS ISLAND BEAUFORT, NORTH CAROLINA 28516

ADDRESS CORRECTION REQUESTED

Contemporary education in the ocean sciences demands such a curriculum for ALL marine scientists. The curriculum will allow professional and graduate degrees, as well as tracks for a host of undergraduate majors.

SiMBOL will also enhance Duke's ability to conduct ocean science research, which now demands the collaborative efforts of biologists, chemists, geologists, and physicists. The coastal oceans beg for collaborative attention, as do fisheries. Biomedicine, ecotoxicology and biotechnology are fields born of such collaborations. The recruitment of young oceanographers and SiMBOL will allow Duke to squarely face the oceans, as was the master plan three decades ago.
