Richard B. Graham Papers 2

Title: Richard B. Graham papers Dates: [1860-2010] Physical Description: 109 boxes and 2 folders

Biographical Note: Richard “Dick” B. Graham was considered the dean of United States postal historians. Graham started collecting stamps as a member of Captain Tim Healy’s Ivory Stamp Club of the Air, a radio program that helped create millions of young collectors during the Depression. In the 1980s he still had his Captain Tim album, half filled with the familiar packet stamps of the day.

Early interests in stamps and the Civil War merged into a fascination with Civil War postal history. As a young man in the 1950s, Graham wrote an article (on the markings of General Banks’ Division) that was published in Robson Lowe’s British journal Postal History.

In the 1960s, Graham was present at the creation of the Chronicle, the journal of the U.S. Philatelic Classics Society. From its origin as a mimeographed study-group newsletter into the wide-ranging scholarly quarterly that it is today, he was a prolific contributor, section editor, and briefly in the mid-1960s, editor-in-chief. Commencing in 1982, Graham wrote more than 1,000 postal history columns for Linn’s Stamp News. His weekly column was widely followed and contributed substantially to the current popularity of postal history as a collecting category.

His published writing generated much correspondence and he responded to written inquiries thoroughly, graciously and unfailingly, sharing his research and knowledge freely. He authored two books. Linn’s Postal History Primer, an introductory handbook based on his Linn’s columns, and (with Jerry Devol) Establishment of the First U.S. Government Post Offices in the Northwest Territory. Though he never exhibited competitively, pages from his extensive collections of Federal Civil War postal history and Columbus, Ohio postal history were occasionally showcased in courts-of-honor at major shows. Over the ears he was awarded virtually every prize the U.S. Philatelic Classics Society bestows, and in 1992 he signed the American Philatelic Society’s John N. Luff Scroll for Distinguished Philatelic Research. In 2014, he was inducted into the APS Hall of Fame. Abstract: This collection is comprised largely of Graham’s “Postal History” columns, which includes a various amount of supplementary material. The rest of the collection focuses heavily upon postal markings of nearly every type. Types of Material: The collection contains copies of published articles, papers, slides, and photographs.
