The Objective.

The objective is to insert the gas enclosure into the shielding.

There is a nominal 10mm clearance with the shielding iron at both the vertical and horizontal surfaces. The Gas Enclosure (GE) frame weighs about 700Kg The shielding will be already aligned on the beam-line.

The one tonne crane is available but operates above the shielding. The GE cannot be lifted using the thin window frames

The solution adopted.

An installation beam will be inserted below the upper shield.

The installation beam will be supported from above

A special lifting beam will be fitted inside the GE. The GE will be initially lifted onto the beam

outside the shielding and aligned with the shielding.

Insertion is done using a push travel trolley on the installation beam.

Stabilisers will prevent excessive movement during insertion.

Mounts allowing final position adjustment are fitted.

GE transportation and lifting

Lifting and transportation tooling has been provided..

Lugs bolted to the GE allow a crane to lift and/or rotate it.

A special trolley permits movement when no crane is available.

The GE and trolley are not designed to be lifted as a unit (But perhaps this is still possible?)

The GE is normally transported lying flat on the entrance window.

The sequence of operations 1

Operations on the cavern floor, prior to installation

All the blanking panels have been removed to allow access inside.

Install the lifting beam Install the guide rollers (optional

at this time). They may interfere with the lifting slings

The sequence of operations 2

Placement of the installation beam Bolt the guide plates to the iron Place the short upper beam (36Kg) in

position (using the 1-tonne crane?) Put the installation beam (85Kg) in

position using the 1-tonne crane, the beam clamp and a counter-weight.

Fit connection rods. Install the push travel trolley and

hoist. Install the downstream GE mounts

into the iron shielding.

The beam is suspended from crane using the beam clamp.A counterweight of 20Kg is used to keep the beam horizontal

The sequence of operations 3

Displacement to the platform using the cavern crane Place the trolley on the platform Lift the GE and place it directly on the

trolley (Or lift GE and trolley together directly from

the cavern floor) Remove the lifting lugs

Translation to the installation point. The trolley with the GE can be wheeled to

the installation point under the beam Attach the lifting beam, guide rollers (if not

already done) and the beam clamp.Raise the GE on the hoist.

Attach the hoist, lift and adjust for balance by moving the clamp if necessary.

Adjust the guide rollers.

Insert!

Fitting and adjusting the mounts. The downstream mounts are already in

position and need only be screwed up as necessary.

The upstream mounts must be fitted and height shims inserted.

Remove all the installation equipment. A survey will then be performed. Position adjustments to be made as

required.

Summary

A sequence of operations has been described which we believe is both safe and permits the installation of the gas enclosure in a controlled manner.

Engineering calculations of all the critical components indicate that they are operating with large safety margins.
