FUN, FUNKY AND FABULOUS3 great buzz words - add functional and full of colour and you pretty much have the description of RICE and what we stand for. Welcome to our world for this Autumn Winter 2011. We like to think of our collection as a lovely patchwork of different items - handpicked from many places around the globe. Mix it all together and you end up with a cozy and comforting blanket of happy items. A patchwork of baskets, boxes, plastic melamine, paper, all sorts of different materials... You name it!

One item can have many different purposes and one item can lead many different lives - if products could talk... Some of them have a great story to tell... Others could give you suggestions on new ways to be used. Our storage basket called BSRAT has been in our collection since our very first season in 1999. They are being made in one village in Madagascar - we call it BSRAT-VILLE. Henry, and his mother Henriette, run the production. Their friends and families mostly work with these baskets, and sometimes if orders are a bit slow - they come to the city and ask if RICE is ok.If these baskets could write home and tell the story of their new lives... As a doll house, a storage box for shoes, for records, newspapers and magazines... I am sure that their makers would be quite surprised.

The Ostrich. What a great Funny Bird! We all know the feeling of “one of those days“

The prints of the season are made by the sweet Ane Bil-de. She draws everything by hand... Old school style... I truly admire her skills.In my head and my heart it is always easy to describe where I would like to go with the new collection, but when it comes to drawing and putting my ideas on pa-per… That’s a completely different story.THANK GOD for Ane... For transforming our thoughts into fun, funky and fabulous prints...

You just gotta love the ostrich... this strange big bird that can’t fly, but sure knows how to hide - or at least it be-lieves so. Sticking your head in the bush and waiting for some things to pass...I guess we all know the feeling and want to do that from time to time, at least for a little while.

Enjoy the amazing hand-work - the lovely MARIE runs the workshop where these baskets are produced and she pays great attention to even the tiniest detail... And we love that!

To embroider is truly an artform, but to embroider on raffia with raffia is really very demanding... Take a minute and appreciate the work done for you on the beautiful red island of Madagascar.

Build your own toy world... A big building site has been in progress this season... THE RICE CITY... 3 sets of house baskets - each set holds 3 different houses. I went to Madagascar in October with my 10 year old daughter Selma - I loved having her with me, and she really enjoyed the design process. These houses are the result - we love the details on each and everyone.

The Florist, the lovely Café filled with cakes and crois-sants... The sportsshop (great for storing my 13 year old sons sports socks) and all the others as well… Even if my children are getting a bit too big for toy baskets - I have already decided where to place some of them... In my laundry room for things that wait to be ironed.... In my kitchen as a small bakery basket, filled with biscuits, bread and crackers…

What a lamp!!!My principle for our new house is "one in - one out", but this ostrich lamp was really knocking on my door and he just needed to get in...And the best part is; nothing had to go, as I was in acute shortage of lamps....

Working with interior design is a happy privilege for me. This way I occasionally allow myself to play the ostrich and hide my head on some of the awful things that goes on around us in the world, I just dive into the colorful universe that we stand for... I try not to stay too superficial and we do our best to take part in making this world a better place to live for everyone. Our new projects for this season are both local and global. My husband Philippe is bike riding to Paris this summer - raising money for the Danish Childrens' Cancer foundation.

We will also organize a Funky Friday café at Rice head-quarters in June where the profit will go to the same foundation.

We don’t just believe in a better world- we are working on it

Japan update - a work in progress - we have sold our melamine dinner plates at minus 20% . We will match the discount and send it to the Danish Red Cross.

Lakshya update - the project has ended, and they are one of our regular suppliers. The project has given a number of street children an educa-tion in tailoring and clothing, and established a production platform that can increase the future production capacity.

Tuscan Farmer´s Soup

Funky Carbonara with kale and fried eggThis is one mouthwatering platefull... Funky way to make a cool variety of the classic spaghetti carbonara...

Ingredients: 600 g kale100 g bacon2 cloves of garlic in thin slices1 tspn chili flakes2 dl cream400 g fresh parpadelle4 eggs for frying50 g grated parmesan cheeseSalt and freshly ground pepper

Method:Clean the kale thoroughly - boil it for 2 minutes in slightly salted water. Drain and cool the kale down in cold water. Squeeze out all excess water from the kale and chop it coarsely. Cut the bacon in bite size pieces, fry it in a hot pan and remove from the heat. Fry garlic and chili in the pan with the remaining bacon fat. Add kale, cream, salt and pepper. Boil the parpadelle according to the instruc-tions on the package. Mix the pasta with the kale and the bacon. Serve in 4 plates. Fry the 4 eggs - and place 1 on each pasta plate with grated parmesan cheese and extra pepper.
