I love those words – and the feeling they bring me.
The colours of the season are pretty cool… jade, pea-cock green, blue, yellow and raspberry. Velvet fabrics, embroideries and handmade details are both cool and cozy. Our prints are a mix of berries, flowers and pea-cocks.
We love animals and this winter, Peacock is our Pas-sion… this funky bird with the most amazing tail…what a fabulous mix of colours and grandeur, used only to at-tract women… is that cool or what?
We have just finished a big sales meeting as I am writ-ing to you. This is something I always look forward to – the “rice” people are all pretty cool and cozy to hang out with. We had a great meeting where we worked on a dream plan for the next five years. Visions, creativ-ity, hopes and ambitions is something Rice has in abun-dance, so there is a lot to look forward to for many sea-sons to come…
It’s been a year of travel and throughout the catalogue you will see pictures, postcards, places and people who inspire us.

These bags are produced in India by former street children - now married and with children of their own. When making these bags they generate an income which enables them to help children living in the streets around New Delhi Train Station.
This project is called LAKSHYA which means aim in Hindi. In this aid programme RICE helps the financing of sewing machines and provides skills and tuition which allow the Lak-shya project to grow and become a sustainable organization.Which they are well on the way of becoming – they have several other customers and are becoming a great little company. this season is called COOL and COZY.Just take a look at the photos on these pages…I believe it says it all!
Personally I feel like throwing myself into the pile of cushions, just stay there for a while and enjoy the feeling or perhaps lay down on the bed and cuddle up with vel-vet quilts, satin and patchwork blankets.
Our favourite colours at the moment are peacock, jade and blue – of course mixed in with yellow, fuchsia and coral... We have made a mix of velvet cushions with crochet details and hand embroidered cushions in all shapes and sizes.I would love to bring each and everyone of them to my house - actually I think that’s exactly what I am going to do!

raffia comes from palm trees and is an in-credibly strong material. When we first went there, it was mostly to look for embroidered items, but then I fell in love with raffia. We bought a lotof baskets home and people wentcrazy to buy them.At the time our office and stockwas in our own home and customerswould come by after work to pick up more baskets for their shops – we had to put li-mits on these items and say to people: ‘’sor-ry no, you can not have that many… We all need to share…’’

This season we are starting a new project. It's no longer about emergency aid, but about building and financing a school in Burma/Myanmar. Going to school, learn-ing to read and write is something we take for granted in our parts of the world.There is a massive need for schools and education in Burma/Myanmar - 2 years ago a cyclone left the country in a big mess. Lots of schools were destroyed.
We have designed a range of Lunch Boxes and Melamine Products with school prints on - every time you buy one of these items - we will donate 50% of the turnover to the project.
The building of the school is done accord-ing to UN Convention of the Rights of the Child - which pleads the right for every child in the world to get an education.

rice Denmark is Partner with Rice in Thailand – we have a beautiful factory in Chiang Mai employing around 80 peo-ple. It is run by my school friend Hans.We have been friends for the last 25 years – when we were in school we of-ten talked about starting a business to-gether. After school I moved to Paris – and Hans was one of our most frequent guests… After a very long lunch in a summer house in the middle of France – we de-cided to start RICE.
Hans came up with the name and we love it because rice is a basic survival product for many people in the world. Add some spice to life with Rice...!

Peacock Passionwe like animals at Rice – we have sent the pink flamingo south on winter vacation and would like to introduce our new best friend Mr. Peacock. We have used Mr. Peacock on prints and embroideries throughout the collection – what a fantastic mix of colours he can present. What a bird… what a “man” – all those colours, all that volume and only to impress the ladies….. How can you not love that...
The peacock is also the national bird of India where we have an office.
This season I went to visit our suppliers together with Birgitte who has worked
for Rice almost since we started …you see peacocks everywhere,
on doorknobs, on prints, as ornaments and in real life too.

we have made a mix of velvet cushions with crochet details and hand embroidered cu-shions in all shapes and sizes. In Madagascar, the women who embroider for uspride themselves in thefine details of their work, they call some of their techniques “needlepainting”, and it actually lookslike paintwork – we really had toconvince them that we love thelook of the larger more chunkyfunky embroideries made withyarn instead of thread.

GLOBAL COMPACT is an organization started by former UN Secretary Gen-eral Mr Kofi Anan – love this man – it makes me feel safe just listening to his voice…
The aim of this organization is to reduce poverty and starvation with 50% by 2015, through corporate business and respect for human rights, labour rights, environment and anti-corruption. We joined this vision in 2006. It is a logical tool for us and already a part of the way we work with our SA8000 certifica-tion.

RICE AND CSRIt’s not just fashion baby!!
we are all about fun, colour and function – but we do work with the heart and the brain as well.
A lot of our products are produced in the developing countries – and since our very early days we have always found it important that the people and places where we produce live up to local laws and labour rules.
This is why we chose to formalize our way of thinking and became SA8000 certi-fied in 2002 as the first company in Scandinavia. It is a certification that ensures fair trading, respect for local laws, no child labour amongst many other things.
When we find a new supplier we check out the facilities and they have to live up to certain standards – in some cases we choose to go in and make a plan of progress with a supplier, in order for them to be able to work with us.
We have done this with one of our big suppliers in India. Together with Danish Governmental Development Organization DANIDA – we have installed an air-cooling system, a new lunch room – and ensured access to drinking water on every floor of the factory.
The last part still under process, is a cleansing system for waste water in the fab-ric dying unit.
The management in this factory has decided to go for a SA8000 certification within this year.
We do not think we can save the whole world. But we are proud of this project, and we believe that no one can help everyone but everyone can help someone.
