Hi to you all… I would like to begin by saying welcome. If this is your first festival, you’ve picked a great year and if you are joining us again, welcome back.
I have one word to describe this year’s festival programme – “phenomenal” – I know I say this every year but I do believe 2016 is the best yet.
We had such wonderful feedback from last year’s festival and there were so many highlights. My personal choice was introducing Andy Sheppard at The Grand. I opened the night by saying never in my wildest dreams did I think I would be bringing Andy Sheppard on stage in Clitheroe. He followed me by saying ‘Hello Clitheroe – it’s great to be here making dreams come true’.
So 2015 was always going to be a hard act to follow.
We had to seriously up our game and my congratulations go to the amazing team of volunteers that I work with. How you have managed to pull this together is incredible! You are all dedicated, creative and consistent in your aim to provide a quality Jazz programme. Thanks must also go to our patrons and sponsors, in particular the University of Central Lancashire who is the main sponsor and collaborator for this year and also Arts Council England for their continued support.
This is a Jazz Festival of such breadth and depth that I can assure you there will be something that will excite you, challenge you, move you and give you that feel-good factor. This 2016 Festival is music at its best. There is something
for everyone; be it traditional, smooth, soulful, innovative, hard core improvisation or inspirational, it is here for you. Take a look and make your choice but don’t miss out, buy your tickets now – many of these events WILL sell out.
Who can resist Claire Martin and Ray Gelato, Arun Ghosh Quintet, Courtney Pine and Zoe Rahman, Bill Laurance Quartet, Martin Taylor, Paul Rigby and the NJO (in uniforms performing Glen Miller), or the Ben Crosland Quintet performing the Ray Davies’ songbook? Or, stalwarts like our very own legends Eric Ainsworth and Ed Lomax and brilliant young musicians Ella Shaw, Jasper Green and Remi Harris? There is an exciting collaboration between our musician in residence Arun Ghosh who is working with and creating pieces for the talented young musicians of the Blackburn with Darwen Big Band.
And this year we have a new late night venture - a party night with the youthfully explosive Hackney Colliery Band supported by our very own BluFunk Syndicate, followed by a Jazz Jam with festival musicians till 1am. Not to be missed and dancing is a requirement!
So there you are folks – let me finish by saying come and join us at the 2016 Ribble Valley Jazz and Blues Festival – where, continuing in the spirit of 2015, dreams will come true.

Festival Innovations featuring two musicians-in-residence, Arun Ghosh and Paul J Rigby, and more!The introduction of Musicians-in-Residence is a festival innovation thanks to Arts Council England’s development grant and the 2016 festival has two of them - Arun Ghosh and Paul Rigby. Arun is an award winning clarinetist, tutor, and composer of national repute, and Paul J Rigby is a notable musician/drummer, an experienced regional director of music, and band leader with five big bands.You will be hearing these two highly recommended jazz musicians frequently during the festival. Their piece-de-resistance will be a collaboration with Blackburn with Darwen Big Band which comprises experienced and talented young musicians. Arun, and big band members under Paul’s direction, have been commissioned to compose new music, fine-tuned in pre-festival sessions and presented in the excellent environment of The Grand. The Big Band’s performance on Sunday afternoon 1st May will be an exceptional experience for the young musicians! Their performance is part of Arun Ghosh’s two hour concert featuring his sextet comprising the finest North West musicians. This concert will will surely have a sellout audience. Music holding Arun ‘In Conversation’, perhaps talking to him about his cultural impact on jazz in the UK? A conversation piece is something never done before at a Ribble Valley Jazz Festival!Look out for Arun and Paul throughout the festival. They will be supporting and encouraging other musicians, introducing bands to audiences, and featuring in jam sessions. Paul will be directing two of his local bands, Ribble Valley Jazz Collective and Blufunk Syndicate, in performances and introducing a new trio to The Emporium Wine Bar on the festival’s opening evening.Ribble Valley Jazz & Blues and festival audiences will celebrate Arun and Paul’s commitment to jazz education and to their work with young musicians. Their unique talents as performers will be celebrated throughout the festival.

Having picked up the sticks at the age of eight years old, he followed his passion, earning 1st class honours degree from Birmingham Conservatoire before continuing his education at the Royal Academy of Music (DipRam distinction). Gaining a wealth of performing experience in his formative years helped JJ become one of the country’s most musical and versatile drummers, going on to collaborate with the likes of NYJO, Jean Toussaint and Celine Dion. A massive hit at the 2014 Festival, we are thrilled to invite JJ and his band back for this year’s festival taster.

He won Jazz Musician of the Year in the 2006 Parliamentary Jazz Awards and he is highly regarded for his prolific output as a composer and also his innovative bass clarinet playing, blurring the boundaries between modern jazz and classical concert music. As a performer, he has worked widely both in Britain and elsewhere in the world, with particular highlights being a continuing collaboration with Chick Corea and his four-year association with Bill Bruford.
Jazz JunctionDate: Saturday 16 April, 10:00am to 12:00noon Venue: Whalley Library | FREE EVENT! Line-up: David Bradshaw - guitar, Bob Kilner - alto sax, Sue Bradley - tenor sax, Shaun Heffernan - drums, Romero Deolozo - bass, Ian Helvensteyn - keys.Five Lancashire County Council libraries will be hosting jazz bands during April in the run up to the festival weekend. Duos and quartets will take live music into Clitheroe, Whalley, Longridge, Accrington and Preston libraries, introducing book lenders to live jazz, drawing attention to the festival.

He was first runner-up in the Rising Star category in the British Jazz Awards, and his trio was awarded first runner up in the Small Group Category. So having him in Clitheroe for both a masterclass and a gig is a real bonus. Remi’s masterclass will give an introduction to Gypsy Jazz Guitar, and also cover efficient practice and study methods for all styles - how to get the best results from your practice time! Trish is an experienced jazz piano player and tutor, spending much of her time supporting the development of young musicians. Breakin’ Jazz will perform popular jazz tunes in the creative environment of the town centre’s new cocktail and coffee bar - EscCC.

In 2015 they made an excellent impact at Ribble Valley and Ribchester festivals with fine interpretations of jazz and pop standards. A former member of The Selecter and Madness, James appeared on the Old Grey Whistle Test, played on sessions for John Peel and performed at the Montreux Pop Festival while John has been a mainstay in northern bands such as The Permanents and The Rankin’ Popes. Playing in front of evocative film projections, this Hammond and drum duo deliver a huge sound with nods to Booker T, Jimmy McGriff and Deep Purple.

Line-up: Bob Whittaker - tenor sax; Hugo Harrison - bass; Johnny Hunter - drums.Featuring tenor sax player Bob Whittaker, bassist Hugo Harrison and drummer Johnny Hunter, this innovative three piece draw influences from the classic trios of Sonny Rollins and Joe Henderson blended with modern alternative rock and eastern folk music. Arun is a British-Asian clarinettist, composer, and music educator who was named as Jazz Instrumentalist of the Year in the 2014 Parliamentary Jazz UK Awards. He makes a welcome return to Clitheroe having raised the roof on his debut at The Grand in April 2015. Arun engages extremely well with audiences, musically and culturally. You will be entertained, and treated to high quality music on Festival Sunday.Whilst the concert starts at 2pm, a festival innovation starts at 1pm when Jeremy Davies of Root Music introduces ‘A Conversation with Arun Ghosh, giving the audience a chance to discover more about this multi-talented entertaining musician, composer, and music educator - perhaps learning something about his cultural impact within the jazz fraternity?Arun Ghosh’s role as Musician-in-Residence will include another innovation, a pre-festival commitment to collaborate with resident festival band leader, P J Rigby, and his experienced and youth orientated Blackburn with Darwen Big Band. Both are commissioned to write some new tunes, to be presented by the Big Band at the start of Arun’s 2pm concert. What a great experience for these local young musicians! The audience will then be treated to a entertaining and lively performance from Arun and his sextet which will comprise some of the region’s best jazz musicians, no doubt playing some tunes from his popular CD, ‘A South Asian Suite’. As one of the first black British jazz artists to make a serious mark on the jazz scene when his first album charted in the 1980s, his career has just carried on rolling. Some 20 years on, with an OBE and CBE for services to music, Courtney continues to break new ground with a string of highly acclaimed recordings and numerous prestigious Industry awards behind him.His latest album, ‘Song (The Ballad Book)’, takes something of a departure, musically, from the award-winning 2014 House of Legends project that headlined festivals and sold out venues internationally. Courtney has stripped everything right back for the most intimate show of his long and celebrated career as he takes to the stage playing bass clarinet accompanied only by fellow Mercury nominee and MOBO Award winning pianist, Zoe Rahman. Described in The Observer as “a remarkable pianist by any standard”, Zoe has firmly established herself as a vibrant and highly individual pianist/composer.
