Foreword
Foreword
As schools and communities engage with increasing levels of music‐making and
enjoyment, I am proud to announce an exciting new evaluation programme by the
Royal Irish Academy of Music ‐ the RIAM Cara Awards.
These innovative Awards have been devised to support instrumental and vocal
beginners and their teachers, paying particular attention to young music‐makers in a
group setting.
This fresh, engaging and supportive group music syllabus is cross‐genre and has been
designed to be both user‐friendly and affordable. It encompasses a variety of styles
including classical, pop, Irish and folk music across a wide range of instruments
including traditional instruments.
To meet the needs of our drama students, we have devised the RIAM Cara Stage School
Performance Programme. This encapsulates singing, dancing and acting skills and can be
taken as a solo or group participant.
Cara, meaning friend, reflects the ethos of these awards, where students can start to
make music or partake in drama with their friends in a relaxed setting.
I hope that you will enjoy our new programme.

RIAM Cara Awards 2013‐2014
Introduction
In response to the upsurge of school‐based and group instrumental tuition, we are
delighted to introduce our new evaluation programme, the RIAM Cara Awards. The
main aim of the award is to help beginners to set goals of achievement as they start on
their musical journey. These Awards are ideally suited to a wide range of students who
are learning in a group environment, from primary and post primary schools, transition
year students, bands and music schools, to youth and homework clubs and school
completion programmes.
Breaking down genre barriers has been key in the initiation of these Awards and the
repertoire lists endeavour to be as diverse and inclusive as possible. To alleviate
excessive costs, every effort has been made to use repertoire from a concise number of
tutor books for each instrument. In addition, the option to use CD accompaniment will
endeavour to help keep the cost of participation accessible.
The RIAM Cara Awards are less intensive than our graded examination system and are
structured in three stages or Céimeanna. Alongside their group piece, students prepare
a solo piece, a simple technical section (scale or exercise) and some musicianship tests,
thereby developing the key areas in a beginner’s musical development.
We have listed repertoire for the following instruments: violin, cello, guitar, keyboard,
recorder, flute, clarinet, trumpet, singing and traditional instruments.
We hope that teachers and students working in the group environment will find these
awards ideally suited to their needs and enjoy presenting for their RIAM Cara Awards.

RIAM Cara Awards at a Glance
RIAM Cara Awards at a Glance
The RIAM Cara Awards are set out in three levels or Céimeanna.
Each Céim has four areas, reflecting the four main areas of musical development.
GROUP PIECE (35 marks)
Each candidate performs as part of a group, either in a larger ensemble/band or in a small group
of two, three or four players. The piece must be in at least two parts and can either be chosen
from the repertoire lists or it can be your own choice. Therefore, the group piece choice is very
flexible as long as it makes a viable musical performance. Within the student group, you may
present a group piece where all candidates are the same céim or it may be made up of a
combination of mixed céimeanna. In larger groups or bands, at least 80% of this group must be
taking the RIAM Cara Award. For larger ensemble/band groups, a teacher may conduct or lead.
SOLO PIECE (45 marks)
Each candidate presents one solo piece from the repertoire list for their instrument or
they may wish to choose a tune from the Traditional repertoire for their Céim. All
repertoire lists have a choice of pieces that can be accompanied by either piano or CD.
For venues that have no piano or do not have access to an accompanist, CD
accompaniment is ideally suited for them.
TECHNICAL (10 marks)
All candidates will prepare a short technical exercise as listed in each Céim. This supports good
technical development in the early player/singer.
MUSICIANSHIP TESTS (10 marks)
A short musicianship test will take place during the assessment. Candidates will be given very
short rhythmic and melodic tests, as listed from pages 7 to 11. The candidates will be assessed
together in the room but will take turns to respond to each test.

MAKING A GROUP
Larger ensemble/band/orchestra
Candidates may perform as part of a large ensemble or band in at least two parts. A larger
ensemble is any ensemble that has five or more candidates. A teacher/conductor may lead the
group. The large group will be assessed separately on their group piece, with the remainder of
the assessment taking place in smaller groups of two, three or four candidates. Each candidate
will also present their solo piece and technical exercise individually in turn. The group will then
be assessed on their musicianship tests, each candidate being given a test, taking turns to
respond. Once all aspects have been completed, the group are free to leave the room together.
The teacher may choose the groupings for this second part but it may be helpful to keep the
groups to one Céim where possible.
Small group
Candidates may perform as part of a small group of two, three or four players. They may play
one‐to‐a‐part or more than one‐to‐a‐part. All participants in that group will present for the
assessment together. The group piece will be performed, followed by the individual solo pieces
and technical exercise. The group will then be assessed on their musicianship tests, each
candidate being given a test, taking turns to respond. Once all aspects have been completed, the
group are free to leave the room together.
CHOOSING YOUR PIECES
Solo pieces are chosen from the Repertoire lists for your instrument. You may like to choose a
piece with either piano or CD accompaniment. Any instrumentalist may alternatively choose
from the Traditional Repertoire. All tunes are available for free download from www.riam.ie
and may be transposed into any suitable key.
Group piece selection is flexible, though suggested repertoire lists are provided in each Céim.
You may like to choose from this list or you can use it as a guide for standard and present a
piece of own choice. The group repertoire lists are mainly for similar instruments (eg two flutes).
You may wish, however, to choose an own choice group piece that is for mixed ensemble,
reflecting instrumentation that is available to your group. Most importantly, teachers may wish
to add a simpler part or play fewer parts to reflect what instrumentalists are available in their
group, as long as it makes a viable musical performance.
Players can be all one Céim or may be of mixed levels also. At least 80% of the performers in
a larger group must be taking the RIAM Cara Awards. Where the group is one‐to‐a‐part, all
candidates must be taking the RIAM Cara Awards.

ON THE DAY
A teacher/group leader may be present in the room during all aspects of the assessment. It may
be helpful if another adult is available outside the room to ensure that the following candidates
are relaxed and ready to play when their turn comes. If piano is not being used for
accompaniment, the venue must supply a CD player for the CD accompaniment and the
musicianship test.
VENUE
Where possible, the assessor will be sent to your centre/school or to a suitable venue as near as
possible to your candidates.
The venue must be large enough to comfortably facilitate an examiner and the largest group.
There will also need to be a waiting/tuning up area available. Music stands must be provided
by the venue. Where piano accompaniment is being used, a piano or appropriate standard
keyboard needs to be available in the room. In the event that no candidate requires piano
accompaniment, a CD player must be provided by the venue.
MUSIC AND COPIES
One original or an authorised download of every piece performed must be present in the
assessment room. Original backing tracks must only be used. A copy of all the pieces must be
presented to the assessor.
MAKING AN APPLICATION
Special application forms for RIAM Cara Awards may be obtained from the Local Centre
Examinations’ Office at [email protected] or are available for download from www.riam.ie.
The closing dates for receipt of applications are listed in the current Examination Regulations
and Information booklet. These details are also available on the Academy’s website and
coincide with our regular closing dates for practical examinations. Examination sessions will
also follow the usual examination periods.
Teachers are asked to apply their candidates in the groups that they are to be assessed as this
will help the smooth running of the assessment on the day.

awarded.
