News:Study On Science Teachers' Knowledge Of Student

MisconceptionsBelow is the link to an article in Science News on the study by

Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics on middle school

physical science teachers' knowledge of student misconceptions.

    http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2013/05/130502131936.htm

As part of an unusual study, Philip Sadler, the Frances W. Wright

Senior Lecturer in the Department of Astronomy, and colleagues

tested 181 middle school physical science teachers and nearly

10,000 of their students, and showed that while most of the

teachers were well-versed in their subject, those better able to

predict their students' wrong answers on standardized tests

    helped students learn the most.

Connection Boxes in NGSSThe connection boxes which contain information pertaining to

DCIs within the same grade/grade span, across grade-bands, and

Common Core State Standards Connections have been uploaded

to the NGSS links found atwww.nextgenscience.org.

    Bubble Gum Chemistry

http://alex.state.al.us/lesson_view.php?id=23898What high school student wouldnt love an experiment that requires the chewing of bubble gum? Thislesson plan

has everything you need to determine the percentage of sugar in bubble gum. Students need an understanding of the

periodic table and an ability to calculate molar mass. They also need to use graphing techniques to analyze the data

they collect. Included on the website are links to documents and a PowerPoint presentation that explains percentage

composition. Address the national standard of scientific inquiry with this lesson, and remind your students to not

put the chewed gum under their desks.

NEW!!! Judges Needed for the RI Envirothon Tuesday, May 21st

The RI Envirothon needs judges for the oral presentations at their annual state competition for high school students.

With environmental concerns at the forefront of the global agenda, programs like the RI Envirothon have never been

so important. As you know, our mission is to develop knowledgeable, skilled and dedicated citizens who are willing

and prepared to work towards achieving and maintaining a natural balance between the quality of life and the

    quality of the environment.

Throughout the year, RI students are invited to attend hands-on workshops in the practical study of our natural

resources. These workshops are led by local professionals. This is in preparation for our one-day state-wide

competition. The event is divided into five different segments; Aquatics, Forestry, Soils and Land Use, Wildlife, and

a special Environmental Issue. This years Environmental Issue deals with Sustainable Rangeland. Each team of

students will take a written test for each of the five sections, and prepare an oral presentation for the Environmental

    Issue.

At Salve Regina University, Newport, RI

Our states, our countrys, and our planets future relies on a well informed and engaged generation of stewards that

can meet the challenges of the world they will inherit. In order to create environmentally literate citizens who can

face these challenges, we must ensure that our students experience and understand the interconnectedness of human

and natural systems by embedding environmental education into all strands of preK-20 curriculum.

The goals of the joint NEEEA and SSS Regional Conference are simple, but bold to create connections across

environmental and educational fields to increase the ability for students, citizens, and our environment to sustain

and thrive in the 21st century. We can achieve these goals by leveraging the environmental education communitys

expertise and by expanding the conversation to build meaningful relationships across curriculum subjects, across

professional disciplines, and outside of the classroom into our rich and diverse communities. Together we can find

ways to deepen the inroads environmental education is making into curricular delivery and promote greaterparticipation and stewardship in all the interconnected disciplines that impact school health and student success.

The conference is organized around three strands: curriculum, environment, and health. These strands are well

aligned with the federal Green Ribbon Schools program, which evaluates and celebrates schools with Healthy School

Environments, minimal Environmental Impact, and strong Environmental Education. These strands will cover a

    wide variety of topics, including:

Health Implementing programs and initiatives to improve health and safety at schools and their surrounding

    communities.

Environment Improving classrooms, schools, and the surrounding environment by reducing consumption,

improving water quality, saving energy, and reducing waste production.

Curriculum Teaching and learning about the dynamic relationship between human, environmental, and energy

    systems.

These strands, both separately and combined, are instrumental to creating a comprehensive approach to increasing

awareness and knowledge about the interrelatedness of natural ecosystems, the built environment, and human

behavior. This regional conference will provide a unique opportunity for cross-sector networking and collaboration

to increase environmental literacy and help create and maintain effective, safe and healthy green schools throughout

    New England.

Harvard Medical School Medscience Program Summer Science Program for High School

    Students

Harvard Medical School Medscience Program is offering (3) one week sessions this summer.

We accept 12 students per course and the program incorporates a hands-on, experiential pedagogy using patientsimulators (a life-like mannequin that doctors train on) integrating basic science and clinical judgment under the

guidance of Harvard Medical School faculty mentors. During the one-week intensive course, students use the

simulator as their patient. The students are organized in small groups for interactive case-based sessions including

individual and group feedback. The curriculum is centered around three seminal medical cases (Asthma, Heart

attack and Diabetes) that serve to illustrate the role of basic and clinical biomedical science in modern healthcare.

Students are exposed to concepts from physics, biology, and chemistry, and they are taught - through personal

experience - the principles of teamwork, problem solving, and communication. During the programs, students will

receive a Basic Life Support certification, reflecting their acquisition of a crucial life skill.

    OUR SPECIFIC AIMS:

    To provide practical scientific knowledge.

    To inspire interest in STEM.

    To motivate for academic achievement.

    To increase self-efficacy.
