MIT BLOSSOMS Math and Science Video Lessons for High School Classes
Latest BLOSSOMS Lesson Based on New Research
The most recent addition to the BLOSSOMS online lesson library is based on
research done by Professor David Hu and his team at the Georgia Institute of
Technology. In this lesson, How Mosquitoes Can Fly in the Rain, Professor Hu
explains the phenomenon by helping students calculate the impact of raindrops on
flying mosquitoes. Just how do mosquitoes do it? It turns out that these insects
combine an extremely strong exoskeleton with a minuscule mass to minimize the
force of each raindrop when it hits. The fact that they are so much lighter than the
raindrops means that the drops lose very little momentum when they collide withthe mosquitoes, which translates into very little force expelled onto the insect. To do this work, the researchers used a
high-speed camera that captured 4000 frames per second (a typical video camera captures 24 frames per second).
Students watching this lesson will gain experience using Newton's laws, gathering data from videos and graphs, and
most importantly, understanding the utility of making approximations. Watch the lessonhereand read more about
the researchhere.

newest international partnership, withUniversiti Teknologi Malaysia(UTM) in Johor Bahru, Malaysia. This initial
one-year effort is Phase I of a larger multi-year program. Among the objectives of the UTM partnership are:
1. To facilitate transfer of knowledge to UTM academics, STEM teachers and staff with reference to theproduction of BLOSSOMS lessons; and
2. To assist STEM teachers to teach STEM subjects using BLOSSOMS lessons that offer more engaging andinteractive learning environments.
The stretch goal of the project is to design and create 20 UTM-produced new BLOSSOMS lessons. In January, the MIT
team will train 100 Malaysian high school STEM teachers in the classroom use of BLOSSOMS. The teachers will
pledge to use BLOSSOMS at least twice in their classrooms and to complete an evaluation form for each. The MIT
team will also train UTM faculty and staff in a "train the trainers exercise, so that these UTM professionals will be
able to provide continued support, training and encouragement to participating high school STEM teachers.
Many BLOSSOMS Lessons Now Available on iCPALMS
Eighteen BLOSSOMS lessons have been reviewed and accepted by iCPALMS and eleven
more are awaiting reviews. iCPALMS is a National STEM Digital Library Pathway
linking teachers across the nation to online tools for planning and implementinginstruction. Based on adopted standards governing what students must learn, this new
portal is aimed at connecting educators with thousands of existing resources for teaching
math and science, making this a truly innovative system. Although the initiative has
been developed at Florida State University's Florida Center for Research in Science,
Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (FCR-STEM), accepted resources will be
aligned not only with Florida teaching standards, but also with the Common Core State Standards already adopted
by most states, including Florida. How it works is that once a team of reviewers and experts have gone through and
accepted the submitted resources, they are then released to the public on the website. So a teacher can be assured
that all resources are tested and reviewed prior to going "live". MIT BLOSSOMS is pleased to be an early partner
with iCPALMS. Read more about the initiativehere.

WEBINAR:English Language Learners and the NGSS and Common Core State Standards -
Wednesday, November 28, 2012
Wednesday, November 28, 2012 3:30 p.m. ET
This Bridge Webinar, hosted by REL-NEIs English Language Learners Alliance, will discuss the implications of
the instructional shifts in the Common Core State Standards and the Next Generation Science Standards,
especially as they relate to the language demands of English language learners.
In his two-part presentation, Dr. Kenji HakutaLee L. Jacks Professor of Education at Stanford Universitywill
introduce the work of the Understanding Language initiative at Stanford, on which this webinar is based.
Professor Hakuta will highlight the following four areas necessary for career and college readiness:
o engaging with complex texts to build knowledge across the curriculumo using evidence in writing and research to inform, argue, and analyzeo speaking and listening in order to work collaboratively, understand multiple perspectives, and
present ideas

MIT BLOSSOMS Back-to-School Lesson Contest Apply by December 3 (HS)
http://blossoms.mit.edu/home
High School level science, mathematics, and engineering teachers are invited to submit their lesson designs for a new
MIT BLOSSOMS lesson in Mathematics, Science or Engineering. We are looking for a lesson that you have taught
successfully and that you think would work well with the MIT BLOSSOMS Teaching Duet pedagogy. We are also
looking for lessons that cover essential high school curriculum topics, but approach those topics in a fresh, dynamic
way. Also, a winning math lesson will be supportive of the new Common Core standards. Here are some important
things to remember about a BLOSSOMS lesson:
A BLOSSOMS lesson is not a lecture.
A BLOSSOMS lesson presents a topic from an unusual, interesting angle.
The video segments should be 3 minutes or less, and never more than 4.
The first segment needs to be no longer than 2 minutes and must excite the interest of both teachers and
students.
With video technology, segments can be filmed in interesting locations. Stay away from the classroom as
much as possible!
A lesson must provide challenging, thought-provoking classroom activities for the video breaks.
Important Contest Deadlines:
Monday, December 3, 2012 Teachers must submit the completed MIT BLOSSOMS Concept Template for
their lessons, availablehere.
Monday, January 7, 2013 - Finalists will be announced and asked to complete the MIT BLOSSOMS
Architecture Template for their lessons, availablehere.Monday, January 28, 2013 Finalists must submit the completed Architecture Template for their lessons.
Monday, February 4, 2013 Winners will be announced
The winning teachers will be invited to travel to MIT all expenses paidto film their lessons during either their
Winter or Spring vacation weeks.

their expertise with STEM program directors or policy makers.
Einstein Fellows may serve in a Congressional office or in one of
several government agencies such as the Department of Energy
(DOE), the National Science Foundation (NSF), the National Oceanic
and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), or the National
Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA). Fellows receive a
monthly stipend and an allowance for professional travel and
relocation. The fellowship year begins in late August 2013.
The goal of the Einstein Fellowship Program is to provide an opportunity for teachers to inform national policy and
improve communication between the K12 STEM education community and national leaders. The EinsteinFellowship Program was created in 1990 with support from the MacArthur Foundation; the 1994 Albert Einstein
Distinguished Educator Fellowship Act gave the DOE federal responsibility for the Program. The Triangle Coalition
for Science and Technology Education administers the Program for the DOE Office of Science in partnership with the
other participating federal agencies.
Applicants must be U.S. citizens, be currently employed full time in a public or private elementary or secondary
school or school district, and must have been teaching in one or more STEM fields full time in a public or private
elementary or secondary school for at least five of the last seven years.
For more information about the program and to learn how to apply, visit www.einsteinfellows.org. Applications for
