Web Sites Worth Exploring:
Understanding Science - http://undsci.berkeley.edu/teaching/The mission ofUnderstanding Science is to provide a fun, accessible, and free resource that accurately communicates what
science is and how it really works. The process of science is exciting, but standard explanations often miss its dynamic nature.
Science affects us all everyday, but people often feel cut off from science. Science is an intensely human endeavor, but many
portrayals gloss over the passion, curiosity, and even rivalries and pitfalls that characterize all human ventures. Understanding
Science gives users an inside look at the general principles, methods, and motivations that underlie all of science.
Ptable -Ptable.com
Many other periodic tables use the word interactive to describe themselves while offering nothing more than links to pages
of data about elements. Pages of data are fine, and Ptable "outsources" these write-ups to others like Wikipedia and
WebElements through the dropdown in the first tab. Ptable shines when used as a true application, more interactive and
dynamic than any standalone software. Please continue reading to learn about all the interesting things you can do with
Ptable that make Mendeleev's creation come alive.

NEACT Northern Division Fall 2013 Meeting: SATURDAY, OCT. 5th, 2013 University of
Southern Maine, Portland, ME
Photovoltaics: Whats in it for Chemistry Teachers?
Our guest speaker will be Alex Polizzotti. Alex graduated from Pomona College in 2011 with a Bachelor's in
chemistry, during which time he authored a textbook chapter on dye-sensitized photovoltaics for the online
textbook "Third Generation Photovoltaics" published by InTech media. From 2011-2013, he worked for SunShot, the
US DOE solar program. During this time he organized and led a meeting of international experts in CIGS and CZTS
photovoltaics and related fields, including computational modeling and semiconductor analysis and characterization.
A paper summarizing the conclusions of this meeting is currently in the review process. Alex will begin work this
coming fall at MIT towards a PhD in Mechanical Engineering in the lab of Prof. Tonio Buonassisi.
This program is FREE to NEACT members. The cost is $5 for non-members, which can be applied towards our $25
annual membership fee.
Please RSVP to Sue Klemmer [email protected]. Thats also the contact for questions.
PCPs and CEUs are available.
The new NEACT embroidered ball caps will be on sale, as well as order forms for polo shirts and canvas bags.
Program:
8:30-9:00 am registration & continental breakfast
9:00-9:10 am welcome & logistics: Sue Klemmer and Dr. Hank Tracy from USM
9:00 -10:10 am Alex Polizzotti will speak on dye-sensitized photovoltaic solar cells. Photovoltaics are poised to
emerge as a major global energy source, and the solar energy industry is already a significant international economicdriver. In the quest to achieve solar energy at price parity with fossil fuels, the research community must address
bothefficiency and price to achieve marketable $/Watt_peak figures.
Cu(In,Ga)(S,Se)2 (CIGS) films have produced 20.3% efficient devices, among the highest single-junction thin-film
device efficiencies. However, concerns over indium price fluctuations and reserve scarcity add significant commercial
risk to this technology.
Cu2ZnSn(S,Se)4 (CZTS) has emerged as a viable earth-abundant replacement for the CIGS absorber. This talk will run
through the basics of solar cells and dye-sensitized cells as well as the future of CZTS research.
10:15-10:45 am Sue Klemmer wlll walk us through unpacking the science content behind Alexs work.
Even if you never cover dye-sensitized photovoltaics in your courses, you do teach concepts that lay the foundation
for understanding how these solar cells operate. Well use the new Next Generation Science Standards to track
backwards from solar cells to foundation concepts in ions, electrochemistry, and light. What do your students need toknow before they are enlightened about CZTS?
10:45 12:00 Activity and lab open exploration time.
Look at and try out a variety of demonstrations and labs, from Flinns kit for making solar cells from blackberry juice to
simple demos on solution conductivity and the photoelectric effect. Chat with other chemistry teachers about what
would work best in different classrooms.

STEM Education Center at Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI) offer two STEM
professional development programs for PK-6 and 6-12 teachers
The STEM Education Center at Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI) is offering two professional development series. The first, for grades preK-6, is a two-day workshop that focuses on how to integrate engineering design and thinking
skills into classroom books. The second, a series for grades 6-12, walks educators through project-based learning on a
variety of STEM topics.
Engineering Lens/Engineering a Story: Integrating engineering practices with Literacy
A 2-day workshop during school holidays.
Meeting I: October 14 (Columbus Day), 8:30-2:30 at WPI
Meeting II: November 11 (Veterans Day), 8:30-2:30 at WPI
Target Audience: K-6 teachers, teacher librarians, STEM coordinators, informal educators
Cost: $125 ( $112 if signed up before 9/23)
PD Description: This fun and engaging workshop offers a hands-on approach for educators to explore practical ways
for using engineering design and thinking skills to enrich learning and expose students to concepts of engineering
from a young age. Aligned with the NGSS, the PD presents methods for using a text (childrens book social studies
text) as a context for problem solving. Teachers will use books they already use in the classroom to identify a key
problem, generate solutions, focus on the best fit solution and design a prototype to solve the problem presented in
the book. This process engages students at any age, fosters critical reading and thinking skills, and stresses creativity
and multiple solutions approach. Engineering a Story does not require any additional curriculum. Instead, it builds on
classroom texts already used by teachers and thus creates a true integration of subjects.

Project-based STEM Teaching and Learning
A series of four sessions between October and April, each session introduces a design challenge on the following
topics (topics may change).
Meeting I: Cladograms (biology). Wednesday, October 30, 3:30-6:30
Meeting II: Light properties (physics). Wednesday, December 11, 3:30-6:30
Meeting II: Indicators (chemistry). Wednesday, February 12, 3:30-6:30Meeting IV: Programming (CS). Wednesday, April 23, 3:30-6:30
Target Audience: 6-12 grade teachers, STEM coordinators
Cost: $40 per meeting or $125 for the entire series ($112 is signed up before 9/30)
PD Description: A truly integrated approach for teaching STEM, this PD weaves together theoretical and practical
methods by introducing design challenges that require participants to use scientific and mathematical concepts for
solving a real problem. The project-based teaching and learning approach is linked to better learning, retention of
content, and student engagement. The PDs engage participants in dual-dimensional thinking: on one level,
participants work in small groups to solve the problem, thus experiencing the activity from a students perspective;
then, discussing the activity from an educators viewpoint, teachers work to modify each activity while keeping a tight
link to the NGSS. All projects and design challenges presented in this PD are aligned with the NGSS and model key
elements of the MA Educator Evaluation Model Rubric for high quality instruction.

This discussion-based working conference is designed for participants to grapple with the tools, techniques and
troubleshooting of inquiry-based teaching.
We welcome presentations on topics such as:
the flipped classroom
design thinking
student-centered learningproject-based learning
performance tasks
essential questions
real-world connections
Proposal Guidelines:
1. Identify a vexation: What is it that "vexes" you about some aspect of your work within the realm of science
education? Carefully explain the source of your frustration, the reason the issue is so troublesome, and the
implications if this vexation is left unresolved.
2. Propose a path to a solution (a venture): Describe how you designed (or will design) a course of action
that might resolve, diminish, conquer, or overcome your vexation. It is not expected that you have begun your
venture. By identifying potential ventures, you provide an entry point for others to confer with you. Propose aventure, large or small, that seems likely to help you push past your vexation.
Your proposal should be no more than 1500 words in length. If you include references, please consider those toward
your word count. The two headings for your proposal are "Vexation" and "Venture" and are to be submitted as a
single document in which you plainly describe the two components. Submit it electronically as a Word attachment
[email protected] or before the September 30th deadline.
Vexations/ventures will be presented at roundtable sessions in which conference attendees respond to your best
thinking. Come and help us build new understandings about 21st century science education.
Additional information (including registration information) will be posted tothe conference website. Please do not
hesitate to contact us.
