Educator Webinar: Mapping Earth's Water Cycle with NASA ScientistsOn Thursday, October 16, 2014, 7-8pm ET,scientists Jorge Vazquez and J.T. Reager from NASAs Jet

Propulsion Laboratory address how their synergistic research using data from the Aquarius/SAC-D and

GRACE satellite missions helps us to understand Earth's water cycle, including extreme events such as floods.

This presentation will use an online concept map tool for exploring the water cycle. Unlike traditional slide-

based presentations, these dynamic maps act as a resource that can be explored with an audience, instead of

a one-way, linear presentation. The concept maps presented are loaded with educational assets (images,

videos, news items) that webinar participants can use in their own educational practices, presentations or fortheir own learning. The concept maps and other materials presented are freely available online. Instructions

will be provided to give participants access to the maps after the webinar. Participants will also learn how to

create their own maps. To take part in this exciting webinar, visit

News:Three Rhode Island Schools Receive National Blue Ribbon HonorsLast week the U.S. Department of Education announced the 2014 National Blue Ribbon Schools, the highest honor

that the department awards to schools. RIs2014 Blue Ribbon Schools are the Barrington Middle School, the Fort

Barton Elementary School (in Tiverton), and the Stephen Olney Elementary School ( in North Providence). Both the Fort

Barton School and the Stephen Olney School have made significant progress in closing achievement gaps while

maintaining very high schoolwide proficiency rates in both mathematics and reading. At the Barrington Middle

School, the school-wide proficiency rates, as well as the proficiency rates for all student groups, stand at or near the

top among all Rhode Island secondary schools. In addition to academic achievement, each of these schools has

created an exemplary culture of teaching and learning. Thanks to visionary leadership, strong community and family

engagement, excellent classroom instruction, and a commitment to continuous improvement, these schoolsdemonstrate that all students can learn and achieve at high levels.

The U.S. Department of Education honored only 337 schools in the country (and only 287 public schools) with the

    Blue Ribbon award.

Next Generation Science Standards: Considerations for Curricula, Assessments,

    Preparation, and Implementation- McREL International

Many states' current science standards are based on guidance documents created in 1996 by the National ResearchCouncil. To update the standards to reflect scientific advances and new education research, a coalition of

organizations developed the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS), released in April 2013. Adoption of the

NGSS by states and districts is voluntary; the standards can be used as is, or they may be used to help guide the

creation of local science standards. As of September 2014, 12 states and the District of Columbia have adopted the

NGSS, and the standards are under consideration in other states and districts.

    Planning For College*

During the Planning for College session, you will learn which classes you need to take in high school in order to reach

your college and career goals, learn about the college application process, learn what activities you might participate

in to enhance your high school experience, and gather resources that will help you plan for college.

    College Session

In the college sessions, you will discover the differences between studying science, technology, and engineering at a

technical school versus a liberal arts school, and you will have the opportunity to hear from current college students

about the choices they made and learn about majors that might interest you. Well show you why choosing a major

doesntmean you are locked in for life, and well share volunteer opportunities that might help you make valuable

    career decisions.

    Career Sessions

Throughout the day, our career speakers will share their personal stories and their creative ways of using science,

technology, engineering, and math and the choices they made in their careers and everyday lives.

STEM Youth Rover Challenge sponsored by The Mars Society Deadline for Submission is

January 31stThe Youth Rover Challengeis a multi-tier robotics educationdevelopment program that is hosted, sponsored and

operated by The Mars Society. The program commenced on August 6th, 2013 to commemorate the one year

anniversary of the landing of NASAs Curiosity Rover. YRC is a STEM related educational effort that is designed for

schools and organizations with students or members in grades 5-12 to have the chance to build and compete at a

global level with a LEGO Mindstorms NXT 2.0 based robotic roverand competition arena intended to simulate the

surface of Mars. The sandbox where the robotic rover operates is intended to be replicated so participants can

operate the competition locally at your school, home or club. Winners of the best place times will be invited to one of4 events held in each region.

The Rover built for the competition is pre-designed to accomplish specific experiments (tasks) similar to what Mars

Rovers accomplish on the surface of Mars and other harsh environments on remote places on Earth. The competition

is operated on-site at your self-built sandbox and the final operation of the field tasks are then videotaped and sent

    to YRC for submiss
