    Whats New in Our Collection

Society memberTony Emmanuel donated this postcard, which he andwe figure is from the 1960s. The other side identifies our fair city as aplace where business and pleasure go together and encourages folks tocontact the Greater Redmond Chamber of Commerce for more info. Some landmarks to get your bearings:

The old golf course, now Redmond Town Center, is at right ofcenter where trees dot the landscape.

Redmond-Woodinville Road is also right of center, making thesharp bend.

166th is at center, running up to a lightly developed EducationHill.

Do you have souvenirs or other artifacts that reflect Redmond? If sowed love to add them to our collection, or at least make a digital copy ifthats an option. Please contact us at 425 885-2919 or

    2010 Walking Tours Set

When you drive or walk along Leary Way youre passing through the heartof Redmonds history. Many of those buildings are among our oldest, but doyou know the stories they tell? Like, which one was both an undertaker's

premises and a bordello? Tom Hitzroth will educate and entertain folks withanother round of walking tours that explore those histories.

    This years dates are:April 18, May 16, June 20, and September 19

Tours run from 1:00 to 2:30 p.m. and walkers meet on the front steps of theJustice White House, 7730 Leary Way. A tour will not be held if it rains.

An $8 fee helps fund Society research. Pre-registration is required. Toregister, phone or e-mail the Redmond Historical Society office at 425-885-2919 [email protected].

    Stitch Yourself Into Redmond History

Were looking for 100 designs of Redmonds heritage to turn into 100 quiltsquares -- and then into a giant quilt that we can raffle off as a fundraiser in2012 when Redmond turns 100!

The names of all those whose designs are used will be incorporated into thequilts border so nows your chance to be stitched into history! If youd like to

participate, please contact Joanne Westlund [email protected] orcall 425-898-0399.

If you are willing to help with the actual quilting, we would love to hearfrom you as well! Squares must be delivered by September.

One of the tour stops is the

    former Redmond State Bank.

    Society lifetimerBrad Best has

run his realty business at the

    corner of Leary and Cleveland

    since 1955, but the building

started out in 1911 as Redmonds

    irst bank.

    In Memoriam

    Clara Hammersberg

One of the Societys most dedicated volunteers, Clara McSparranHammersberg passed away on March 1. She arrived from Nebraska withher family in 1937, graduated from Redmond High in 1952 and marriedJerry Hammersberg two years later.

What an integral part Clara and (husband) Jerry played in workingwith and for Redmond Historical, recalls Society President Chris Himes.Examples include staffing our Saturday Market booth, refinishing BillBrown's table, framing the giant aerial photo of Redmond, helping with

programs (Scouts, Oregon Trail, Postal Service) and donations like theantique display case now outside our office. They are what I call the Saltof the Earth people, Chris says of the Hammersbergs. Clara will bemissed by all.

Clara was a beautiful person who was passionate about her community, church, family and friends, adds Society memberJudy Lang. Someonewho pitched in, helped out and was generous with her time for others.

Frances McEversA contributor to our history with her videotaped memories of growingup on her family homestead, todays Farrel-McWhirter Park, Francespassed away on February 14. This is holy ground, she said in the video.Everyone should have a place that is holy ground to them. And because ofthe richness of my childhood, I love this place more than any place in theworld. Born in Kirkland in 1912, Frances family moved to the Hutchesonhomestead in 1919. She attended the school in today's Anderson Park, then

raduated Redmond Hi h in 1930.

    In Memoriam

    Jennie Bryden

A charter member of the Society, Jennie Irene Bryden passedaway on February 28. Born in 1912, she grew up in the Plains statesand came with her family to Redmond in 1927, her children said ina letter to the Society. A year later, at age 16, she met, as she likedto say, "My love to be for life" -- Charles (Buster) Bryden. Theymarried a year after that, on Christmas Day 1928, just as the GreatDepression was taking its toll.

She jumped right into community life. When she wasn'tvolunteering with Girl Scouts, she was organizing the RedmondNokomis Club, her family said. She and Buster were foundingmembers of the Redmond Bike Derby.

Jennie also helped found the Redmond Historical Society, firstattending an early meeting in 1999. And she was a regular of theOld Redmond lunch bunch that meets weekly at the Village Caf.

During World War II, Buster was in the Army and they moved toMontana, then British Columbia, then Portland before finallysettling in Kirkland.During the moving days, her family said, Jennie always madethe best of it, she always kept her faith and knew everything would

be alright. She was VERY STRONG.Jennie also is responsible for five children, 28 grandkids, 65

great grandkids and 32 great-great grandkids! We all have thosememories that are now treasures and will be in our hearts forever, her family wrote, just like She is.

A Lovely Lady and Redmond Pioneer

I recently received a call from a friend of mine, Anne Stray Salmi. Sheasked if I would like to come for lunch and meet a pioneer of Redmond. My reply was an immediate "Yes". There I met Inga Kristianson-Carlson. I

began to interview her while eating mouth-watering blueberries and freshlypicked green peas from Anne's garden.

Inga was born in Ballard to Norwegian immigrants on February 19,1910. When she was a baby, her parents moved to Redmond, where theyhomesteaded a farm on 84 acres with a house near Novelty Hill. Theirsmall farm become home to around ten cows, plus chickens and a horse. There was no electricity. At one time, Mr. Kristianson leased property for arailroad track that ran up to Siler's Logging Camp and brought logs downfrom the camp to be sent to the mill. The remains of the track lingered formany years, but are now gone. The 100-year-old house has been remodeled

and is now occupied by two of Inga's nieces. There are about six acres ofthe property left.

Inga attended Avondale Grade School and walked there each daythrough "the swamp", which is now N.E. 116th and paved. When she wenton to Redmond High School, she was a member of Honor Society, but didnot engage in sports as she had to board the bus immediately for home. Shealso spoke of the old school bus that she rode that was built by J.J. Orr. (Hewas the manual training teacher at Redmond High School.)

She then went on to Bellingham Normal (now Western WashingtonUniversity) where she became an elementary teacher. In 1947 shemarried Carl Carlson, whose parents were from Sweden, and moved toLong Island, New York. Carl died in 1978 of heart failure. Aftereight years she decided to return to her roots. She moved to a home inthe Juanita area of Kirkland and she still lives there. She turned 100 yearsold on February 19, 2010. Inga lives by herself, goes to water aerobicsthree times a week, goes golfing once a week, and still drives occasionally.

She is as "sharp as a tack."
