HISTORICAL WOTE

Present day Dawes County was o r i g i n a l l y a p a r t of Sioux County which was created by an a c t o f t h e Leg! s l a ture i n 1877. Thi s county extended f rom the Wyoming 1 i n e eas t t o the western boundary of what i s now Hol t County and south t o the f o r t y - f i r s t degree of l a t i tude. For several years it was attached t o Cheyenne County f o r admin is t ra t ive , j u d i c i a l and t a x a t i o n purposes. Fo l lowing the populat ion growth o f e a s t e r n Sioux County, a number o f new count ies were organized. One o f these counties, Dawesy named f o r Governor James W. Dawes, had i t s boundaries de f ined by an a c t of the Leg is la tu re on February 19, 1885. The county conta ined present day Box But te County u n t i I i t was organized separa te ly by a vote on November 2, 1886. On May 7, 1885, the governor appoi n t ed tempora ry county o f f i c e r s and a l s o designated Chadron as the i n t e r i m county seat.. On Hay 9, 1885, the f i r s t board of coQnty c m i s s i o n e r s met w h i l e the f i r s t county e l e c t i o n was h e l d on June 27, 1885. One of the most contested issues of t h i s e l e c t i o n was the locat ion o f t he permanent county seat. The p r i n c i p l e cownunit i es invo lved were Chadron and Dawes C i t y , known today as Mi tney. The i ssue terminated in favor o f Chadron.
