Thi s county extended from the Wyoming 1 i ne east to the western boundary of what i s now Hol t County and south to the forty-f irst degree of l a t i tude. For several years it was attached to Cheyenne County for administrative, judicial and taxation purposes. Following the population growth of eastern Sioux County, a number of new counties were organized. One of these counties, Dawesy named f o r Governor James W. Dawes, had its boundaries defined by an act of the Legislature on February 19, 1885. The county contained present day Box Butte County unti I it was organized separately by a vote on November 2, 1886. On May 7, 1885, the governor appoi n t ed tempora ry county officers and also designated Chadron as the interim county seat.. On Hay 9, 1885, the first board of coQnty cmissioners met while the first county election was held on June 27, 1885. One of the most contested issues of this election was the location of the permanent county seat. The principle cownunit ies involved were Chadron and Dawes City, known today as Mi tney. The issue terminated in favor of Chadron. SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE This record group consists of microfi lmed records of Dams Countyy Nebraska and is arranged in the following series: 1) County Board Proceedings, 1887-1969; 2) Election Records, 1887-1966; 3) Harriage Records, 1886-Jan, 1912; and 4) Tax Lists, 1937-1952. A1 1 records of Dawes County are on microf i lm and may be found in the Reference room under RG240. The Harriage Records on microfilm are shelved with other marriage records of the various counties of Nebraska. Series One & Two were loaned by the county Clerk o f Dawes County for microfi lming, November, 1973. The Marriage records were copied from Security Microfilm of Dawes County.
