If they are to withstand heavy, intense, channelled and/or slow traffic, pavement layers must

have high strength and above all good resistance to rutting. An asphaltic concrete is considered

to be rutting-resistant if its rutting depth is shown in tests to be less than 5 % after 30,000 cycles

at 60 °C.

To achieve such performance, special asphalt mix formulations are called for.

Eurovia has therefore developed Rexovia®, a high-performance, high-strength solution with

proven qualities.

EFFECTIVE EVEN UNdER HIGH LOAdINGS

Rexovia® has excellent rutting resistance under all types of traffic, even at high temperatures, and its flexibility and service life are not compromised at low temperatures. The Rexovia® manufacturing process is simple and enables the product to be used in areas subject to specific local constraints.

To prevent rutting, Rexovia® is the solution of choice for both new construction and maintenance: > HGV lanes > bus lanes and bus stops > approaches to traffic lights > motorway toll stations > roads on steep slopes > industrial roads > by-passes > intersections and roundabouts > port and airport facilities > etc.

A dURAbLE REINFORCEd PAVEMENT

Studies carried out by Eurovia to develop a high-performance rutting resistant asphaltic concrete focused on achieving a certain stiffening of the asphalt mix while maintaining satisfactory fatigue resistance.

Two types of additive included in the hot mix achieve this objective: > either «PE», a thermoplastic polyethylene

granulate which acts as a plastic filler to strengthen the inter-grain bonds created by the bitumen,

> or «R», a powder obtained from grinding a natural solid hydrocarbon, which is soluble in bitumen and changes the latter’s behaviour by reducing its thermal sensitivity.

Whichever additive is chosen, ordinary coating equipment is used to manufacture Rexovia® :> in a batch mixing plant, the pre-proportioned

additive supplied in thermofusible bags is introduced directly into the mixer for each batch,

> in a continuous mixing plant, the additive is measured and then added to the hot mix through the recycling ring.

The «R» additive can also be mixed with the bitumen ahead of time in the bitumen plant and the «R» binder supplied to the mixing plant ready to use.

AN ASPHALT MIX WITH STRONG MECHANICAL PERFORMANCE

Rexovia® is a 0/14 or 0/10 mm asphaltic concrete for pavement surface or binder courses subject to high risk of rutting under dynamic loads or of shear failure under static loads.

Rexovia® has qualities conferred by a special additive that gives the asphalt mix excellent mechanical performance across a wide range of temperatures. The mix is applied in thicknesses of 50 to 90 mm, like a semi-coarse asphaltic concrete or a high modulus asphaltic concrete (EN 13108-1).

Rexovia® offers mechanical properties above the average for semi-coarse asphaltic concretes, especially with respect to rutting resistance.

The proportion of additive can be adjusted, based on a laboratory study, to meet even more stringent rutting resistance requirements.

Tests comparing a Rexovia® 0/14 mm formulation with 50/70 bitumen + PE additive and a semi-coarse asphaltic concrete with an identical grading curve and 50/70 bitumen demonstrate Rexovia®’s excellent mechanical behaviour and low thermal sensitivity.

Stiffness modulus (EN 12697-26)

Rexovia® has a high stiffness modulus. With appropriate proportions of additive, the asphalt mix meets the requirements of the standard covering high-modulus asphaltic concretes (EN 13108-1).
