2 ◆ Update www.sohnnurse.com May 2020

Dear Colleagues,

Welcome to the SOHN Update - Preconvention Issue. When the SOHN Congress Education Committee met in November 2019, we created the theme “Revolutionary Changes in ORL Nursing”. At that time, none of us knew what “Revolutionary” changes would be happening in the world in 2020. The COVID-19 pandemic has changed the way

everyone lives. Who would have thought things like toilet paper and hand sanitizer would be hot commodities, yet, as

word of the pandemic spread to the United States, hordes of people cleaned stores of these and other items.

So much has changed since the beginning of the year. “Sheltering in place”, “self-quarantine”, and many other terms have become part of our vernacular. While I write this, I realize that the fate of our annual congress is still unknown, but we are hopeful that by September, the world will be back to “business as usual”. Our Education Committee has planned an outstanding four day event based on your suggestions and comments. The scoping course returns this year. Our keynote presentation by the Atwater and Donnelly Duo, the well-known and highly acclaimed duo will provide a unique blend of traditional and folk music. They are amazing humanitarians, gifted motivational speakers and will deliver an inspirational, entertaining message. This year’s conference will provide the latest information about leading-edge techniques, present up-to-date discoveries, provide the latest research findings in otolaryngology nursing and offer an opportunity to renew old friendships and meet new colleagues.

Options are also being explored to present this program virtually if we are unable to join together in Boston. It is my hope that each of you will take the opportunity of joining together, either in person or through virtual means so that we might learn and grow in our understanding of ORL nursing. Our message is that we do have “revolutionary” knowledge to pass on to you, the ORL nurses of the world. My prayer is that you and your families are safe during this time of uncertainty.

SOHN’s 44th Annual Congress and Nursing Symposium

Revolutionary Practices in ORL Nursing Boston, MassachusettsSeptember 11-14, 2020Explore the city where the new and the old are in constant conversation, where cobbled-stone streets meet glass enclosed shopping galleries, where the Freedom Trail Landmarks stand beside cutting edge restaurants and renowned theatres brush shoulders with trendy night clubs. Uncover Boston’s past while enjoying its distinctively modern edge, enjoy the old masters and the brew masters, pedal-powered swan boat rides or high-speed catamaran whale watches. Shop artisanal markets or chic boutiques. While the afternoon away at a sidewalk café or dine from the popular food trucks found throughout the city. Enjoy star-studded concerts, some under the stars. Take a walking tour or blaze a trail of your own. Stroll the lively waterfront or cruise the historic harbor.  Join your peers for an outstanding educational and networking event. Held each fall, the SOHN Annual Congress and Nursing Symposium provides an opportunity for hundreds of ORL nurses to gather and celebrate the finest in our specialty. This four day educational event features cutting-edge presentations, state of the art workshops, the widely acclaimed Comprehensive ORL and Head-Neck Nursing Course and the always popular Pharmacology Course.

Please Note: The Boston Marathon will be running on the last day of our program. You will be able to see runners as they cross the finish line.

The Best of Boston: Top Ten Things To Do1. Walk the Freedom Trail, a 2.5-mile walk around Boston that

takes in 16 historic locations to piece together the story of the city’s role in the American Revolution. Among the famous sites pass the Old South Meeting House, where it is thought the Boston Tea Party originated

2. New England Aquarium: The Aquarium offers tank after tank of aquatic life, both salt- and freshwater. As you walk into this world-class aquarium, one of the world’s largest salt-water tanks looms before you. This 200,000 gallon monster holds sharks, sea turtles, and thousands of smaller fish. A ramp spirals upward around the tank. The top is open; ask for a schedule so you don’t miss the daily sea turtle feeding.

3. Faneuil Hall Marketplace incorporates Quincy Market, North Market and South Market and is a 250-year-old meeting place on the Freedom Trail, packed with shops, stalls and eateries.

4. Shop Newbury Street Boston’s most enchanting street. Eight blocks filled with salons, boutiques and fabulous dining. The entire street and surrounding areas is a shopper’s paradise, from high-end names to bargains at Filene’s Basement. Filene’s Basement is one of the Boston’s landmarks. Since 1908 the store has been helping shoppers score deals on designer clothes. Be prepared to dig though bins of clothing to find the treasures you’ve dreamt of.

5 . Visit USS Constitution, launched in 1797 makes this the oldest commissioned warship afloat in the world today.

6. Duck Tours: The famous Boston Duck Tours are an enter-taining way to see the highlights of the Freedom Trail if you don’t feel like walking. Your tour guide and operator will point out key historical locations as you roll through the streets of Boston in an amphibious World War II vehicle. These custom-made vessels can travel on both land and water. Towards the end of the 80-minute tour - surprise - the vessel rolls down a ramp and into the Charles River. Some guides will even allow passengers to pilot the vehicle while it’s on water.

7. Paul Revere’s House. On the night of April 18, 1775, silver-smith Paul Revere left his small wooden home in Boston’s North End and set out on a journey that would make him into a legend. Today that home is still standing at 19 North Square and has become a national historic landmark. It is downtown Boston’s oldest building and one of the few remaining from an early era in the history of colonial America.

8. Drink in the Samuel Adams Brewery Tour The Samuel Adams Boston Brewery is, thanks to the free tasting at the tour’s end, one of America’s favorite factory tours. If you prefer to do your Boston imbibing in an actual bar, stop in at Cheers, aka the Bull and Finch Pub, where you will recognize the exterior from the classic TV show “Cheers.”

9. Take a walk through Boston Common. The Public Garden was the first botanical garden in the United States. If the weather is nice, make sure you take a swan boat ride. See if you can locate the George Washington Statue and The Make Way for the Ducklings Statutes.

10. Boston’s museums are as good as any you’ll find in the world, and the most visited one is the Museum of Science at Science Park. It has more than 400 interactive exhibits including --the Virtual Fish Tank, an IMAX theater and a planetarium

Certification Examination in Otorhinolaryngology and Head-Neck NursingThe National Certifying Board of Otorhinolaryngology and Head-Neck Nurses (NCBOHN) endorses the concept of voluntary, peri-odic certification by examination for all otorhinolaryngology and head-neck registered nurses. Certification is one part of a pro-cess called credentialing. It focuses specifically on the individual and is an indication of current competence in a specialized area of practice. Board certification in otorhinolaryngology and head-neck nursing is highly valued and provides formal recognition of basic otorhinolaryngology and head-neck nursing knowledge.

The Certification Program is sponsored by the National Certifying Board of Otorhinolaryngology and Head-Neck Nurses (NCBOHN). The Certification Examination for Otorhinolaryngology and Head-Neck Nurses is administered for NCBOHN by the Professional Testing Corporation (PTC), 1350 Broadway, Suite 800 New York, NY 10018 (212) 356-0660, www.ptcny.com. Questions con-cerning the examination should be referred to PTC.

Eligibility Requirements:

1. Currently licensed as a Registered Nurse in the United States or the equivalent in other countries.

2. Recommended at least three years of experience in otorhi nolaryngology and/or head-neck nursing practice.

3. Completion and filing of an Application for the Certification Examination in Otorhinolaryngology and Head-Neck Nursing.
