The New York Times Building
The New York Times Buidling was completed in 2007 forthe New York Times Company (NYTC), one the world's
preeminent publishers and news organizations. TheNYTC occupies 26 of the 52 stories in the 1046' (to top of
mast) tall tower with each level having approximately32000 sf of leaseable area. The project was designed byRenzo Piano Building Workshop with FXFowle Architects.
The design's goal is one of lightness and transparency.The glass facades are covered with 186,000 ceramic rods
which shield the interiors from direct sunlight while alsoattempting to reflect colors across the facade. The sunshade allowed the glass used to be highly transparentwithout heavy tinting. The skin is paired with advancedlight monitoring systems that are tied into the artificial
lighting, ensuring appropriate light levels throughout theday in the office spaces and a level of controllability for
the occupants to ensure higher worker comfort andproductivity.
The structure is primarily steel with a concrete core andfloor decking. One of the key architectural elements is
exposed steel columns, beams, and X braces running onthe outside of the skin over areas without the ceramic sunshade. For fire safety reasons these do not contribute to
the overall structural integrety of the building. Theirfunction is more for occupant comfort to ensure their isnot excessive sway in the building during high winds.
