GCSE REVISION SUPPORT
Revise Smart Revision Support
WHY USE THIS REVISION BOOKLET?
With only 15 weeks until the start of the exams it is important that you start to organise yourselves. One of the hardest things you have ahead
of you isn’t the actual work but more finding the time to DO that work. There's always going to be something you’d rather watch on Netflix
than doing revision, so in order to help yourselves you will need a plan (and that involves planning time off as well). This booklet has brought
together a variety of tools that may help from apps that will help you revise or block access to your phone to revision tips, revision timetables
and an action plan. You are more likely to achieve something if you have the goals written down.
Please do not think that you can do this all on your own. You have the chance to be in lessons right up to the end of the exams, use the
teachers to help you, if you have misconceptions or are doing something incorrectly this will continue to happen unless someone helps you.
“If you have bad technique and you shoot a basketball a thousand times, all you are going to get good at is
shooting really badly.” Michael Jordon
Tips for succeeding in the exams
1. Work in lesson and ask if you don’t understand something
2. Set realistic goals
3. Plan your revision
4. Use revision books, past exam papers and MARK SCHEMES to help – You must be willing to review your work.
Remember why you are doing this – is it to go to college then on to university, or to get an
apprenticeship, is there a dream job you want. If there is have a picture of this to remind you why you
are doing this! The next 15 weeks could determine the next 50 years!

What and when to Revise?
Revision Timetable
Do not think planning a revision timetable means cramming every minute with revision! You need time to relax and do the
things you enjoy all work and no play will not help you!
Step 1: List all the activities that you love doing during the week and the things that you just don't want to compromise on.
This might be sports clubs, meeting with friends, Xbox, working etc then nominate a time that you would most likely
allocate to these activities. This only needs to be a rough estimate.
Step 2: Put these onto your timetable for the week(s)
Step 3: Look at some of the blank slots and allocate these to study – you may wish to allocate specific subjects and topics
which will help or simply to studying. You may want to use the exam planner to help map this out.
If you can stick to the timetable 60% of the time, that should be considered a 'win'. Sometimes you may not feel like
studying and want to relax, or sometimes you may get 30 minutes into an X-box game or find that you've had enough
snapchat for the day and decide it's time to hit the books. Either way, plan in advance and stay flexible too!

How to Revise
Revision Tips
Work in small groups – this can help in a number of ways; talking about the work and discussing ideas will help you retain 50% of
information opposed to just 10% from reading. If you identify a subject to revise in a group you could share out the work. Each
person revises or produces a revision resource for a different section and then you all bring it together. You have only done 1
piece of work yourself but as a group can discuss and revise a whole unit. But make sure you are in a group where each person is going to do
the work.
Follow your school Timetable - If revising in the holidays you can spend a lot of time procrastinating or trying to decide what
subject you should revise when – Why not just follow your school timetable and revise the subjects at that time. The time
you have just saved on thinking it through you can be relaxing.
Vary your location – Often you can become bored revising in the same location day in day out and then you bring those
emotions to your revision. Pick 2 or 3 locations, this may be different rooms, round at grandparents, a different desk in the
library or maybe round at a friend’s house. You will feel better about revising and start to make unconscious connection to
places which may help. Try to avoid noisy places.
Social Media Detox – Distractions are everywhere and if your phone is on with alerts you will get distracted. There are many apps
that let you limit the amount of access you have to encourage you to revise but try to have your phones away even if just for a
20min window. Maybe make it a game if revising in pairs – each have a forfeit on a piece of paper put the phones on top of it –
who ever moves the phone first has to do the forfeit.
Revise Smart Revision Support
Sleep – not in the exams!! You want to aim for 8 hours of sleep ideally and this is not just so you are not tired to revise the next
day or to be ready for you exam. During your sleep you have 90 minute cycles of REM and it is during REM that you consolidate
memories and repair your body. So with every additional 90 minutes of sleep you consolidate more and more information.
Map your thoughts – Mind maps are a great way to have a lot of information on a page but also provide prompts for you to
then thing about at a deeper level. Use colour and pictures to try and help the information stay in your mind. There are
many internet tools that can help this - www.mindmup.com. It is important to recognise that write often the process of
designing a mind map and making the links and connections is often more powerful tat reading it back after.
Distributed practice – It won’t surprise anyone that studies show that one of the most effective ways to learn is to revisit
work again and again. Don’t only plan to review/revise a topic once come back to it – even if only for 10minutes, as you
haven’t done it for a while you will have to think harder which will help you remember it for longer.
Be the teacher – Working with a friend, teaching the things you have learnt to a younger or older sibling or parent will
help the work stay in your mind more than simply reading. You will remember 90% of what you teach but only 10% of
what you read.
Fuel correctly – It is important that you are making sure that you take on the right water and food when trying to revise. Always have a glass
of water or drinks bottle with you when revising and try and drink it all whilst studying during that session. Having water
in your exams is proven to help you stay more alert and focused within the exams as well. Keeping hydrated can boost
attention by almost 25%, drinking even a really small amount of water (25 ml) helps improve performance, but drinking 300 ml
improves memory performance and can help improve your mood. Some examples of good brain food that you could make sure
you eat are Fish and green vegetables and for snack foods, peanut better, other types of nuts, dark chocolate (or try dark
chocolate with nuts), apples and fresh fruit.

Revision Support Revise Smart
Introducing GCSE pod – a resource to help your child with their revision.
What is GCSEpod?
It is a fantastic online resource bank featuring video podcasts of 3-5 minutes in length that
supports students with their revision. It is tailored to the exams your child will be taking in the
summer. Teachers are using it in class, to set revision assignments and for homework but your
child can watch whatever pods they want, whenever they want.
Why use it?
It is free, it can be used on the go and it is tailored to the exams your child will be sitting. It has
been proven to help students improve their grades as it is written by experts who know the
exam content and how to access the highest grades.
Getting your child started
Ensure your child has activated their GCSEPod account by following these simple instructions:
1. Go to www.gcsepod.com
2. Click login
3. Click New Here? Get Started
4. Ensure they’ve selected they are a pupil
5. Enter their personal details as requested
6. Create a username and password
If your child has already activated their account, they simply need to log in with the username
and password they’ve created. Most students should have been on it in lessons/for homework
by now so they should know how to access their account.
Top tips
Little and often is the key – 20 minutes bursts of watching will help them get the best
results.
Aim to watch 10 pods a week during the revision period; increase this to 2 pods a day during
exam season.
The students who got the best results last year watched an average of 102 pods.
Create a playlist with your child and download it in advance so they can listen to it on the
way to and from school.
Turn it into a competition; watch some pods with your child then see who can remember
the most facts – talking about their learning will help it stick.
Use GCSEpod to create a revision timetable and set up relevant playlists; you can do this in
the My GCSE section. You can also find the dates of the exams here.
Encourage your child to make key word flashcards as they watch the pods so that they are
actively using the information; it increases their retention plus the cards can be used at a
later date to check they still know everything.
Y11 Revision and Support Sessions The school is offering a comprehensive programme of revision and support sessions for Year 11 students. This will commence after the February half term holiday and will run, in most cases, through until the final examinations commence in early May. Students should be in a position following the mocks to identify which revision sessions they feel should take priority but teachers may also direct them over the coming months to try and give them the best possible start for the summer exams.
