Know your applicator spread width and switch off when turning on headlands

Test bait using chicken layers mash. Apply appropriate rate of slug pellets according to threshold

Do not apply slug pellets if heavy rain is imminent

Fill hoppers in field away from margins / watercourses / hard surfaces

Clear up pellet spills immediately – no matter how small

Clean the applicator after each day’s use

Do not contaminate drains or watercourses when cleaning the applicator

Application equipment should be stored under cover

Do not leave packaged product in field unattended

Dispose of packaging and contaminated PPE through a licensed waste disposal contractor

Slug Pellets – Metaldehyde

ALWAYS READ THE LABEL, USE

PESTICIDES SAFELY

One pellet in 10,000 litres water could be enough to exceed the

drinking water standard (assuming 5% active ingredient pellet, 50,000 per kg)

STOCKS FAN JET HEADLAND CONTROL FEATURES

Please read the operating instructions supplied with your Stocks Fan Jet, with particular regard to spread width, calibration and headland

control sections. Depending on the model of Fan Jet, your machine will have adjustable deflectors or spread bias adjustment or disc speed

control. Use these features individually or in combination to limit or adjust the spread when working headlands, and ensure that pellets are

only spread in-field and not into watercourses and field margins.

1. ELECTRICAL CONNECTIONS Power requirement is 12 volts with a minimum continuous 25 amps supply.

The Fan Jet is supplied with a control console and all wiring – both connections should only be connected to the vehicle battery to ensure maximum power to the disc motor.

Ensure the positive fused connection is to the positive (+) terminal and negative earth connection to the negative (-) terminal. The disc should rotate in a clockwise direction when viewed from above. The charging system must be in good condition to achieve the best results.

Our ATV Fitting Kit includes short power and control cables and these should be used to maximise power at the disc motor for ATV installations.

All cables and controls are fitted with matching plugs and sockets – any modification to the wiring or controls or fitting different connectors will invalidate any warranty claim and may affect the performance of the Fan Jet.

Optional extension cables are available if the standard cables are not long enough – contact your dealer or Stocks AG for advice.

2. FITTING TO A VEHICLE OR MACHINE The Fan Jet will operate facing forwards or backwards. It could weigh over 80kgs (65 litre) or 130kgs (130 litre) when full, attach to a suitably strong rigid mounting point.

Ensure the disc height is a minimum of 1 metre above the crop canopy or the ground – more height may improve the maximum spread width.

3. TIPPING BASE PLATE The separate tipping base plate has 4 holes in the base to take M12 bolts – use these to attach to the parent vehicle. The base plate can be repositioned to fit the holes in the back of the machine to attach to a vertical mounting point – use whichever is best for you. Ensure there is sufficient room to tip the hopper for emptying. The tipping base plate is attached to the chassis by 2 bolts and spacers which act as the pivot, and a removable steel pin secured by an ‘R’ clip. There are 2 positions for the pin – use these to help level the Fan Jet. To tip the hopper, remove the pin whilst supporting the hopper, lower gently and empty the contents into a suitable container.

Ensure there is sufficient free length on the electric cables before tipping.

Exercise caution – the laden machine is heavy and may cause injury when emptying if not supported correctly.

4. HOPPER TIPPING

5. FITTING TO AN ATV The cost option ATV kit has a formed steel base plate with quick fit clamps, and short power and connector cables to maximise the power at the disc motor, and jacking screws to adjust the angle of the disc. If you do not use this kit, be aware that the standard cable lengths may lead to a power drop to the disc motor, and the disc angle may not be correct.

IMPORTANT the laden weight of the Fan Jet may affect the stability of your ATV, be aware of this and wear suitable protective headgear. Ensure the ATV can carry the weight – if in doubt check the suitability of the vehicle before fitting. We do not recommend the 130-litre hopper for use with an ATV.

6. CONTROL CONSOLE The left hand switch controls the disc motor, and supplies power to the right hand switch. The right hand switch opens and closes the feed aperture – NOTE this will only work with the disc motor running.

Vario control console (cost option) has an additional rotary 12-position dial that is used to increase or decrease the speed of the disc. Use this to match the spread width to an implement or bout width, especially useful when broadcasting seeds.

Both – Use the supplied self-adhesive Velcro strips to attach the console to a suitable surface. – Do not modify the control console; this will invalidate any warranty claim.

7. REMOTE SWITCH FACILITY The spare white wire from the control console can be earthed to negative (-) via a suitable remote switch to close the feed aperture, e.g., when the implement is raised and lowered, or a sprayer turned on and off. A cost option interface is available if the white wire is earthed to positive (+) Part No. FJ-004 RSI.

8. SETTING THE FEED RATE To adjust the feed rate, undo the black plastic knob at the centre rear of the hopper and slide the feed regulator plate to the required setting, reading from the scale decal – position 10 is the highest feed rate. Tighten the knob. Note - you should carry out your own calibration test for each product and application rate.

9. SETTING THE SPREAD BIAS (Factory set at 90 degrees) The complete feed mechanism can be rotated to bias the spreading arc to the left or right, and even out the spread pattern equally from the centre-line of the machine for in-field work, and as a headland control at field borders. To adjust, undo the black plastic knob on the side of the machine and using the stainless steel motor cover, rotate the complete circular mechanism as far as required, moving the indicator dimple in the direction in which you want the arc to swing. Re-tighten the knob.

10. SETTING THE HEADLAND DEFLECTORS Adjustable deflectors that reduce the exit aperture from the disc are incorporated into the Fan Jet to physically limit the spread width for headland control. Undo the black plastic knob at the rear of the chassis and slide each deflector around the disc as far as required to prevent chemical granules from entering a watercourse of grass margin. Tighten the knob. Note - If you are using a Vario control console, this can be used by itself or in conjunction with the deflectors, and the bias adjustment.

11. SPREAD WIDTH and PATTERN BASIC RULE. The spread width is dependent upon the density of the granule or seed, and the disc speed (plus other factors).

Large, dense granules and seeds with a high disc speed give the maximum spread width – small, light granules and seeds will not spread as far.

Other factors affect the spread width:

Type of slug pellet. Typically, a large, dense hard pellet should spread further than a small, light, soft pellet, because it is comparatively heavy and does not powder on the disc. Typically, a ‘wet’ produced pellet will be hardest, a steam produced pellet mid range, and a dry produced pellet the softest. However, the line between traditional ‘mini’ pellets and ‘full size’ is blurred – most are of similar size and some lower priced dry produced pellets termed, as ‘minis’ are actually larger and heavier than more expensive wet produced pellets, and can have a good spreading characteristics.

Seed varieties and dressings. Different varieties and dressings will affect the density and the spread.

Wind Conditions. Dead calm conditions are the optimum; any wind will affect the width pattern.

High forward speed. The same as driving into a headwind of the same speed on a calm day, and this will peel the edges of the spread pattern backwards and inwards.

Disc speed. If the Vario control console is used, altering the disc speed will affect the width and pattern. A higher disc speed will give a wider spread width.

Disc vanes. Ensure they are in good condition and not worn excessively. Replace if necessary.

Low disc height. Will not allow the product to reach its maximum width before gravity takes over.

Low electrical power. Will not allow the disc to reach full speed.

High application rates. Loads the disc more than a lighter rate and can slow it down.

Incorrect disc angle. It must be at least horizontal – not angled downwards.

Spread bias. This can be adjusted to centralise the pattern, left and right of centreline.

Adjustable deflectors. We do not recommend that these are used for in-field work but only for the headland control on the outside bouts. However it is possible to adjust them to restrict the width overall or just one side, but they may cause increased breakage of the granules or seed damage. Our advice would be to use them in conjunction with the Vario control console and also reduce the disc speed.

12. SPREADING SLUG PELLETS This Fan Jet should spread slug pellets to a maximum width of between 18 and 28 metres depending on the pellets and factors listed previously, but be aware it could be less. Both Metarex - De Sangosse should achieve around 24 metres wide, possibly to 28 metres in perfect conditions. Other makes of pellet of similar size and density may perform in a similar fashion, but some will have different characteristics.

It is important that you always test the pellets through the Fan Jet to establish the spread width and pattern before you go to work, and to enable you to calibrate the Fan Jet. Be aware the spread pattern could be thinner towards the outer edges.

Our advice is do not restrict the spreading width in any way except for headland control, and to calibrate for and drive at your desired bout width and accept any overlap between bouts during in-field work.

NOTE. If using crop sprayers at fixed tramline widths, be aware that these may not match the spreading width, and the spread pattern could be thinner towards the outer edges.

NOTE. If using an ATV, it is better to work at half the tramline width to achieve a good spread pattern with overlap between bouts, even at high speeds.

Practice good husbandry to minimise crop damage. Apply pellets before, during, or immediately after drilling or planting operations, especially where weather and soil conditions may result in a high slug population, and for susceptible crops such as OSR, especially double low varieties. Inspect crops and re-apply pellets as required.

13. SPREADING SEEDS Use the Fan Jet to spread many small seeds such as; grass, rape, mustard, turnips, etc, and other seeds and granular products that flow freely through the feed aperture. The spread width will depend on the size and density, actual widths may be more or less depending upon disc speed.

It is important that you always test the seed through the Fan Jet to establish the spread width pattern before you go to work, and to enable you to calibrate the Fan Jet.

NOTE. An optional grass agitator is available to assist when spreading grass seed to help prevent seed bridging in the hopper (only for use with grass).

NOTE. An optional seed deflector is available to limit the spread width and to deflect the pattern downwards, for example, into tines of a grass harrow or a stubble cultivator. This is especially useful when used in conjunction with the Vario control console – use a lower disc speed to help deflect the seed with greater accuracy and less seed damage.

14. OPTIONAL CALIBRATION CHUTE FITTING INSTRUCTIONS Safety

Ensure the machine is switched off before adjusting any deflector plates or fitting the calibration chute. Always wear the appropriate protective

clothing.

If calibrating with slug pellets, or any other pesticide, please ensure that the any spilt product is collected immediately. Do not allow slug

pellets or other pesticides to contaminate water supplies.

For more information regarding slug pellets and best practice: www.getpelletwise.co.uk

Fitting the Calibration Chute (Refer to page 13)

Place the chute (item 4) between the top and bottom plates of the Fan Jet chassis with the thread of the clamp positioned centrally in the recess, against the outer edge of the top plate. Ensure it is positioned square with the chassis and tighten the retaining plate (5) in position to

clamp the chute to the machine with the threaded knob (1) onto the top plate of the chassis.

The Fan Jet Pro has two adjustable sliding deflectors that fit around the disc – these are used to physically limit the throw of material off the disc to adjust spread width and pattern – either equally to both sides or as a border control to one side only. Note the position of these

deflectors to be able to return the deflectors to this original position following calibration.

Undo the black plastic knob protruding through the rear upright chassis that secures the deflectors – slide both deflectors around the disc until the angled ends of the deflectors are firmly touching the sides of the calibration chute, to form a seal. Tighten the knob to secure the

deflectors in this position.

Fit an appropriate bag behind the flange around the aperture. Use an elastic bungee cord around the bag to hold it in position.

15. CALIBRATING & CALIBRATION GUIDES Place a minimal amount of slug pellets, seed or granules in the hopper - typically just a few kilograms.

The disc needs to be ON and turning and the feed shutters are switched ON and OFF to start and stop the catch test. If using a Vario

control, the disc speed can be lowered when calibrating providing it is sufficient to throw the pellets clear of the disc.

Finish by carefully tipping the Fan Jet forwards on its tipping base plate and gently shaking to empty any pellets or granules left in the

chute and under the disc, into the bag before weighing (or removing the chute when finished)

Method

Use the following formula to establish the flow rate – this is a 1 minute catch test universal for all machines, products, widths and speeds.

Application rate (kgs/ha) x forward speed (kph) x spread width (metres) = Flow rate in kgs per min

600

Example 1.

The required application rate is 25 kilograms per hectare. The target forward speed is 10 kilometres per hour. The bout width is 6 metres

wide.

25 kgs/ha x 10 kph x 6 metres = 2.5kgs per minute flow rate

600

Example 2.

The required application rate is 5.5 kilograms per hectare. The target forward speed is 12 kilometres per hour. The bout width is 4.25 metres

wide.

5.5 kgs/ha x 12 kph x 4.25 metres = 467 grams per minute flow rate

600

NOTE - BEFORE STARTING WORK - remember to reposition the adjustable deflectors to the original position.
