Carden Arbor View School invites students from the Foothill

communities to join us for a Roaring Summer of adventure, fun, and learning. Designed for motivated

and creative learners, our summer program, presented by experienced teachers, embraces the

ideals of an education that includes Joy, Growth, Enthusiasm, Dignity and Respect.

Our summer program combines a variety of enriching courses with several grade level specific academic courses to insure students receive an opportunity to make the most of their summer months at Carden Arbor View School. Our program offers four two-week academic and enrichment sessions of three periods each, students may elect to attend a single course or enjoy a full day of courses. Courses are offered Mondays through Thursdays of each session with Fridays off. This year’s program has been modified—as have most things in our world today. We have a plan, it may require modifications as our summer progresses and gathering guidelines adjust, please prepare to be flexible. Our first two sessions of classes will take place online via Tele-Instruction with courses offered utilizing Zoom and Google Classroom. We plan to offer courses during the third session in an online format and an on campus format as we move toward being able to gather again. Then during the fourth session we plan to have all courses available in an on campus format. In the third and fourth sessions we also plan to offer an enriched childcare program on Fridays.

Session 1 -- ONLINE Monday, June 22-Thursday, June 25 Monday, June 29-Thursday, July 2

Period 1 – 9:00 - 10:00 a.m. Jump Start Language Arts—Grade 1-2 Students will understand and apply concepts of print, phonological and vowel chart awareness. They will expand oral language skills and gain meaningful vocabulary for reading. Students will demonstrate comprehension by participating in a variety of responses when listening to or viewing informational and literary text. We will work on drafting simple sentences and learning to write a simple story. Ms. Panos CSI History—Grades 5-8 Do you love a good mystery? History? Well detective, put on your cap and let’s get started. Through reading research, analyzing data, and lots of discussion we will crack the cases surrounding King Tut, Shakespeare, Mayan Empire, Marco Polo, the lost city of Atlantis, Julius Caesar, Ötzi, and WWII. Mrs. Sprague Beginning Spanish—Grades 3-8 Curious to try a new language? Students will learn many common phrases and basic information through interacting with arts and coloring projects, games, and practical conversation. Mr. Zailo

The Write Stuff—Grades 3-5 Have you ever been inspired by Dr. Seuss or other famous authors? Have you ever wanted to write and illustrate your own children’s book? Well in this class you can learn the process of how to create your own literary masterpiece. In this step-by-step class, you will learn how to write, edit, illustrate, and create your own hard cover book. Let your creativity and imagination soar. Mrs. Dinkelman Amazing Animals—Grades 1-5 Leap into the wild, with an awesome adventure that investigates amazing animals. Enter a bug’s life, take flight with birds and bats, and dive into the ocean during our sea life adventure! We will read, draw, sing, and utilize online field trips to learn about different types of animals—reptiles, amphibians, mammals, insects, birds, and fish. Don’t be surprised if you even meet a few animals face-to-face in your backyard or at your classmate’s home! Mrs. Johnson Fun in the Sun—Grades 2-5 Tired of being inside? Let’s go out and get moving! Learn all types of games and outdoor activities! This class has physical activities all adapted to get you outside and moving. We will be trying new things like yoga, exercise dice, animal exercises, and even some fun games to keep us going throughout the summer. Ms. A. Costa


Period 2 – 10:30 – 11:30 a.m. Math Magic—Grade 1-2 In this course, we will work on counting to 100 by 1’s and skip counting, knowing the addition math facts, adding and subtracting small numbers, understanding the value of money, and knowing the units for measurement, time, and weight. Ms. Panos Decorative Origami—Grades 3-8 Learn to fold paper into beautiful geometric shapes and designs that can be used as ornaments or interlocked to make fidget toys. We will also make a giant origami American flag with interlocking pieces for the 4th of July! Ms. Enriquez Minecraft Like an Architect—Grades 1-8 This course will introduce different types of building techniques and combining different materials, colors, and shapes to create stunning structures in Minecraft. Student will need access to a computer with Minecraft downloaded and installed, a Chromebook will not work. Mr. Bagdasarian Dollar$ and Sense—Grades 4-8 Have you ever wondered how far a dollar will go? In this course you will be introduced to the term financial literacy and some of the aspects it includes. Using games and activities you will learn about consumer skills, saving, careers and how money makes the world go round. Ms. A. Costa Creative Illustration— Grades 3-8 Am introduction to drawing in 3-D! This class covers the basics of drawing, as well as developing a student’s eye to seeing objects as 3-D shapes. Techniques will include basic shapes, perspective, shading and foreshortening. Mr. Zailo

Arithmetical Art—Grades 3-5 Math is everywhere. In this class students will apply the basic concepts of math, including addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, fractions, and decimals to a variety of artistic styles for use in daily life situations and also for creating their own works of art. Put math and art skills to the test and become and Arithmetical Artist. Mrs. Dinkelman

Magic Tree House Books & Adventures—Grades 2-5 Jack and Annie will whisk students away on magical adventures traveling through history and throughout the world where they will live among the dinosaurs, build castles, and even become mummified! We will explore the Magic Tree House website, play some cool trivia games, and walk away with a brand new Magic Tree House book. Mrs. Johnson Go Get Thinking!—Grades 3-5 Fire up your brain in this critical thinking class. Through games and activities you will improve your ability to think clearly, rationally, logically, and independently. Critical thinking involves mindful communication and problem solving. Mrs. Sprague Fun on the Fly—Grades 1-3 Are you considered the class clown, do you like to make people laugh? Improv sounds like the class for you. In this course you will get the opportunity to learn new Improv games that will help you think on your feet on family game night or even in your daily life. Challenge your parents and amaze your friends. You want your jokes to be the hit of the summer well the first step will be to take this class. Period 3 – 12:30 – 1:30 p.m. Carden Controls for New Students—Grades 3-5 Students will be introduced to and experience the Carden controls, charts, rules, and explanations that will help them meet the challenges of mastering reading, spelling, writing, and listening. Students will learn to develop the chart, identify particular sounds with the letter or letters that make them, and use this knowledge to define these sounds, unlock words when they read, and build them when they spell. Mrs. Dinkelman Debate, Let’s Argue!—Grades 5-8 Debate and public speaking are lifelong skills that have extraordinary value. Participation in debate can boost self-confidence, accelerate learning across the curriculum, and improve critical thinking and oral communication skills. Other skills developed include research, persuasive writing, and listening. All levels of debaters are welcome. Mrs. Sprague Talking to the Hand—Grades 3-8 Did you know that American Sign Language qualifies as a Foreign Language in high school and college? In this basic American Sign Language skills course you will learn how to talk with your hands. You will learn the ABC’s, Numbers, Calendar, etc. all in ASL. Zumba—Grades 1-8 A fun, energetic dance fitness class! Students will learn elements of dance styles from all over the world while engaging in a fun workout to contemporary music. Dance games, teamwork games, and a floor piano await! Includes a short performance on the last day of class. Miss Enriquez Around the World in 8 Days—Grades 1-5 Come take a journey around the world. We will explore different continents and countries through location, region, human-environment and interaction. Students will learn map skills, different types of map projections, time zones, capitals, landmarks, rivers, and prominent landforms while celebrating many cultures from around the world. Mrs. Johnson View from my Window—Grades 3-8 As the world has spent a lot of time at home lately, everyone has a different view from their window. Grab your passport and let’s go explore what actual people are seeing from their windows around the world. We will explore many countries, cultures, and famous landmarks. Mastering Math—Grades 3-4 Knowing basic math facts is key! Students needing extra help with their math skills are encouraged to enroll. This is an academic course that will offer review and reinforcement of the math curriculum with a focus on basic math facts. Mrs. Smith Read It! Draw It!—Grades 3-8 The course will challenge the student’s reading skills as well as comprehension in order to visualize the written story in their individual interpretation. Students will read, by chapter, a children’s book that is appropriate to their level and draw a scene or character from the chapter. Language Arts—Grades 3-4 Eight days, eight parts of speech! Each day, students will focus on a new part of speech for mastery. They will also learn to construct complete sentences that demonstrate subject/verb agreement, appropriate capitalization and punctuation, and appropriate use of parts of speech. Mrs. Smith Backyard Wildlife—Grades 1-5 Uncover the nature in your own backyard! Learn about our fuzzy, feathered, slimy, and silent neighbors as we investigate signs of wildlife such as tracks, tunnels, nests and more. We will explore through hands-on projects, nature walks around your backyard, scavenger hunts, games, and activities to find out what animals call your backyard home. Mrs. Johnson What-If? WebQuest—Grades 2-8 This course is computer based and provides benefits in problem solving, it is an inquiry-oriented lesson format in which most or all the information utilized comes from the web. Retro Games—Grades 1-8

Students will learn strategies for playing indoor and outdoor games. Keeping it “retro” by playing games like jacks, marbles, kick-the-can, and other non-electronic recreations. Ms. Henderson Plants from Around the World—Grades 3-8 Students will learn about plants from around the world, from money trees to carnivorous plants like the Venus flytrap. We will focus on where and how these interesting plants grow and what they need to thrive. Mr. Bagdasarian

Fun With Fractions—Grades 4-7 Put all of the parts together to create a whole. In this class students will learn the relevance of the fractional parts of a whole, how they are converted into decimals and percentages, and how this information relates to daily life. Math knowledge, recipes, and hands-on learning unite to create a unique mathematical experience. Talking to the Hand—Grades 3-8 Did you know that American Sign Language qualifies as a Foreign Language in high school and college? In this basic American Sign Language skills course you will learn how to talk with your hands. You will learn the ABC’s, Numbers, Calendar, etc. all in ASL. On top of that you will learn some information about the Deaf culture. Ms. C. Costa Yoga Kids—Grades 3-6 Children at all fitness levels will learn the basics of yoga as part of a health and wellness routine. Yoga Kids will easily follow instructions and develop a yoga vocabulary as they learn the names of the postures and movements. This yoga practice will enable your child to develop flexibility, strength, posture, balance, and coordination. Mrs. Smith

Cars 101—Grades 2-8 Students will learn what makes an engine go fast from turbos, superchargers, and electric battery powered cars. This course will take its students on a track around the earliest cars to the latest car technology of 2020. Mr. Bagdasarian

Mindful Mathematics—Grades 3-8 In this class you will experience mathematical skills that can be applied to real life. Fractions, decimals, percentages, and basic math concepts will be reviewed. Ordering at a restaurant and figuring out the tip, figuring out grades, and other resourceful applications unite to create a unique mathematical experience. Mrs. Dinkelman Super Girls & Wonder Women!—Grades 3-8 Girls and women have been doing and inventing extraordinary things since long before the first female superhero was printed onto the pages of a comic book. Learn about the real super girls and wonder women of history and create your own comic book starring your own team of heroes! Miss Enriquez Words, Words, Words—Grades 3-6 Do you like to express yourself through words? Are you a creative student? Learn all about poetry, art, and creative writing. We will be creating a journal with daily writings, working on our writing skills, and showing off our artistic ability no matter what level. Ms. A. Costa

Mr. Bagdasarian Creative Illustration— Grades 3-8 An introduction to drawing in 3-D! This class covers the basics of drawing, as well as developing a student’s eye to seeing objects as 3-D shapes. Techniques will include basic shapes, perspective, shading and foreshortening. Mr. Zailo Talking to the Hand—Grades 3-8 Did you know that American Sign Language qualifies as a Foreign Language in high school and college? In this basic American Sign Language skills course you will learn how to talk with your hands. You will learn the ABC’s, Numbers, Calendar, etc. all in ASL. Period 3 – 12:30 – 1:30 p.m. Road Trip Across America—Grades 1-3 Over the course of this class, an excursion across the United States is in store for you. You will be visiting the different regions of “America the Beautiful,” to investigate each place. Geography, a bit of history, people, and especially fun customs will be our focus for this class. Come join us on a “Road trip Across America!” Mrs. Smith Zumba—Grades 1-8 A fun, energetic dance fitness class! Students will learn elements of dance styles from all over the world while engaging in a fun workout to contemporary music. Dance games, teamwork games, and a floor piano await! Includes a short performance on the last day of class. Miss Enriquez Minecraft Creativity, Problem Solving, and Self-Direction—Grades 1-8 This course introduces students to Minecraft, a unique world where you can build literally anything and where you are faced with various obstacles in survival mode. Mr. Bagdasarian Dungeons & Dragons—Grades 4-8 Do you like to play games involving the world of magic and adventure? Do you have a great imagination and create amazing stories through games? Carden Controls for New Students— Grades 3-5 Students will be introduced to and experience the Carden controls, charts, rules, and explanations that will help them meet the challenges of mastering reading, spelling, writing, and listening. Students will learn to develop the chart, identify particular sounds with the letter or letters that make them, and use this knowledge to define these sounds, unlock words when they read, and build them when they spell. Mrs. Dinkelman Holidays Around the World—Grades 1-4 Students will learn about holidays from all over the world. We will cook, craft, and read our way through the many ways and reasons people celebrate. Ms. Henderson Dollar$ and Sense—Grades 4-8 Have you ever wondered how far a dollar will go? In this course you will be introduced to the term financial literacy and some of the aspects it includes. The day will be structured and full of activities, crafts, and tons of fun! Get out of the house and come spend time with your friends.

Registration Details You may register for one, two, or three periods per session. The grade level is the one the child will be entering in Fall 2020. The Kindergarten program is offered as morning only (9:00-11:30) during sessions 1 and 2; and either as a morning only (9:00-11:30) or full day (9:00-1:30) program in sessions 3 and 4. Extended care is also available both in the morning and afternoon for sessions 3 and 4 only. Advance registration of ONE WEEK is required for all courses and child care.

CAVS currently enrolled families may log on to their Curacubby portal to access this sign-up form at: CardenArborView.Curacubby.com. Submission of a completed registration form online and payment in full are required to complete registration. Late registrations may not be accommodated.

Tele-Instruction During registration there will be a Tele-Instruction Agreement that needs to be signed for each student. After this has been completed each student will be provided with a CAVS email address. This email account should be used to create a Zoom account at zoom.us with the student’s name. Teachers have been instructed to only admit into the Zoom session accounts with names matching their course attendance list. No other names will be admitted into the Zoom session.

Our Faculty Our summer faculty consists of our regular academic and enrichment teachers along with adjunct teachers who are recommended to us. All teachers are credentialed or certified in their field.

Summer Attire for On Campus Casual and comfortable are best for summer.

Shoes or sandals (no flip flops) are a must. To protect the health and safety of all staff and students each individual will be required to wear masks, in accordance with CDC Health Guidelines.

Daily Routine • Masks should be in place before staff

Child Care Child Care is available both in the morning and afternoon. Child care can be arranged at a session rate of $100 per child. All child care must be paid for in advance. Children not picked up by 5:30 p.m. will incur a late fee at the rate of $1 / minute.

Refund Policy Refunds will be made after the canceled session has ended. Cancellation notice of one week or more will incur a 20% fee. Cancellation notice of less than one week will incur a 50% fee.

Lunch and Snacks Students are responsible for providing their own lunch and snacks. Packing food for your child ensures they have an adequate amount that is nutritionally balanced. Please keep sugar items to a minimum. We apologize but the staff will be unable to refrigerate or heat any student food. There will be no food available for purchase on campus.

Drop Off and Pick Up • Please drop off and pick up students at the

front of the school in the semicircle. • Adults should remain in the vehicle. • The gate will be locked during the school day. • No parents will be allowed on campus. During Drop Off • Masks should be in place before staff

approaches the vehicle. • Student temperature checks will be

administered before students exit their vehicles.

During Pick UP • Students will be called to the front gate

through our intercom system and delivered to the vehicle.

Absences Parents will need to call the front office and notify the school if their child is absent on any day.

Facilities Our campus is located at the intersection of San Antonio Avenue and 15th Street in Upland. Although we are not affiliated, we share our site with Upland Christian Church. The school backs up to Magnolia Park. Our well maintained grounds boast a variety of mature trees and are safe and secure with locked gates.
