Details 1-5 – These details show the locations and specific product of the fire proofing

materials.

All four details require and provide at least 1-hour of fire resistance. Detail 1 Painted Steel Beam

This detail shows intumescent coating directly applied to the W12x40 beam and sheet metal covering the wood that is in contact with the flanges of the beam. The wood is protected so that it does not char away in fire conditions and expose the flanges of the beam. Intumescent coating shall be applied per the manufacturer’s instructions and Client Schedule.

Detail 2 Painted Steel Column

Detail 2 shows an HSS 5x5x¼ steel column installed immediately next to 6x6 wood wall framing. Sheet metal is installed on the wood wall framing covering the 2 inches immediately adjacent to the steel column. This sheet metal provides a metallic layer for the intumescent coating to adhere to. Intumescent coating is applied directly to the steel column and 2 inches on the steel metal covering the wood wall framing. The wood is protected so that it does not char away in fire conditions and expose the uncoated portion of the steel column. Intumescent coating shall be applied per the manufacturer’s instructions and Client Schedule.

Detail 3 Painted Steel Column with Sheet Metal

An HSS 5x5x¼ steel column is installed immediately between two 6x6 wall framing members. For ease of construction sheet metal is installed covering the steel column and 2 inches of the wood framing on either side of the column. Intumescent coating is applied entirely covering the sheet metal which protects the steel column and wood underneath. The wood is protected so that it does not char away in fire conditions and expose the uncoated portion of the steel column. Intumescent coating shall be applied per the manufacturer’s instructions and Client Schedule.

Detail 4 Steel Column Wrapped – Detail at Steel Buckets

No intumescent coating is used on this detail. This detail shows 3/8-inch steel bucket (bracket) attached to the HSS 4x4x¼ steel column. This bracket fixes the steel column and the 5½ x 11 7/8 glulam together.

Page 3: REVIEWED CONDUCTED FOR THE PURPOSE OF DETERMINING …

Letter to Jason Amato April 10, 2020 Page 3 of 5

Refer to structural steel fabrication drawing C2 – Two structural steel brackets are each made up of 2 – 3/8”x 4”x1’01/2” and 1 – 3/8”x4”x6” steel plate. Together these two brackets weight approximately 26 pounds. The “back” of the bracket is 1 3/8”x6”x1”07/8” steel plates. These back plates are welded hard up against the HSS 4x4x1/4 steel column together the column and the back plates weight approximately 178 pounds (162.5+16.2). Together the bracket and the column weight approximately 204 pounds (26+178). The bracket (minus the back plate) weighs approximately 13 percent of the assembly with the column and back plate making up the remainder 87 percent. The column’s mass dominates the assembly, the assembly is not uniform, and a W/D ratio is not available. Calculating the W/D ratio is not practical since the receding of the glulam beam would need to be accounted for as it chars away. For a solution for satisfactory fire resistance for the bracket the W/D ratio of the beam is used for the beam/bracket assembly. This is reasonable since the column and back plate dominate the mass of the assembly. The W/D ratio for the 4x4x¼ steel column is 0.76. See W/D, M/D, A/P Tables, Carboline Fireproofing Division. Two layers of 5/8 inch Type X Densglass overs the 3/8-inch steel brackets. This provides more than 1-hour of fire resistance. The intersection of W/D = 0.76 and 1¼“ Type X GWB shows approximately 1.7 hours of fire resistance. See Oregon Structural Specialty Code (OSSC), 2019 Edition, Figure 722.5.1(4). See Appendix for figure.

28th & Everett Apartments Project Fire Proofing Details for Selected Steel Members – Prescriptive Designs – Intumescent Coating Please refer to the following drawings:

Drawing G6.50, Wall Assembly Types, Plan Symbols CM03 and CM04. These details show the prescriptive designs for intumescent coating that provides either 1-hour or 2-hours of fire resistance.

Drawings S2.10W & S2.11 – These two drawings show the locations HSS 5x5x¼ steel columns being protected with Sherwin Williams’ intumescent coatings in conformance with UL Design Y624.

Conclusion The four custom designs provide at least 1-hour of fire resistance to selected structural steel members.

Prescriptive designs for providing fire resistance to selected structural steel columns are shown on drawing G6.50, Plan Symbols CM03 and CM04. surface PreParation

Surface must be clean, dry, and in sound condition. Remove all oil, dust, grease, dirt, loose rust, and other foreign material to ensure adequate adhesion.

aPPlication conditions

FIRETEX FX5120 must be applied in a dry internal environ-ment. It must not be exposed to condensation, damp or wet conditions during or after application.

Temperature: 40°F minimum* (air, surface, and material) At least 5°F (3ºC) above dew point*At application temperatures below 50°F (10°C), drying times will be signifi-cantly extended, and spraying characteristics may be impaired

Relative humidity: 80% maximum****In conditions of high relative humidity good ventilation conditions are essential.

Extended overcoating times may be required at low temperatures and/or high film thicknesses.

Occasionally cracking may occur on edges of flanges and external or internal angles of structural steel, depending on geometry, over-application and ambient conditions. This does not detrimentally affect the fire performance properties of the product.

additional notes

The dry time of this material is retarded by high humidity condi-tions. Lack of air movement also slows down the drying process, and under such conditions it is advisable to introduce some method of circulating air over the coated surface in order to speed up the drying. A ventilated air speed of 6 feet per second is recommended.
