Editor’s GREETING

This winter has been a little shy of what I re-member winter to be. However, even though we had only a little amount of snow Miranda Wisnow and Ellison Xu were able to make a snowman and share it with us in the photo you will find in this issue. Ellison also shared a poem about their snowman. Thank you for sharing.

Are you ready for an absolutely wonderful spring? I am looking forward to the warmer weather when you can sit on your porch and watch the lawn grow. The robins and finches are back and happily chirping early in the morning. They are truly music to my ears. I pray that we do not get a cold snap that will damage the tender greens that are showing themselves. If you plant a garden I wish you sunshine, rain and a great harvest.

By the time you receive this newsletter you will most likely have enjoyed a plate of corned beef and cabbage and a cold glass or two of green beer. As the month of March comes to an end, the chocolate bunnies will have hopped away with the jelly beans and we will have eaten our share of chocolate eggs, crème filled eggs, deviled eggs and egg salad. Wasn’t it grand!

We have a number of new neighbors so please welcome then to our beautiful community. If you see a lady walking the neighborhood wearing a big straw hat waving a greeting it is most likely me. It would be my pleasure to meet you. As the editor, my desire is to make this newsletter your newsletter. I am eager to receive pictures, recipes, and stories that you want to share. If you are involved in a cause that is dear to your heart and would like to get others involved let me know. If it is possible, I will help your spread the word. Bridges of Rivermist is our neighborhood.

Please enjoy this issue let me know what you think. Till next time, have a good spring.

BRIDGES OF RIVERMIST 3 MONTH REVIEWDuring the last three months the board has been busy preparing for the summer.

We are excited to be investigating what our next step in the rill restoration will be. Dan Pavelich walked the area with Ponds, Inc. to see what we will be able to do this year. There is some planting that needs to be completed from last year since the winter caught us off guard. This includes some trees being replaced.

To keep up with the changing times the Board is working on needed revisions/additions to our Rules and Regulations.

As always, The HOA has continued their efforts through legal action as necessary to collect any delinquent fees from non-paying members. From January 1 through March 15, 2016 we have had five houses sell. We welcome our new neighbors.

D. Dorrance Custom Homes has submitted plans, which have been approved, to begin construction for a new dwelling on Larking.

“It’s a privilege to serve on the HOA Board and live in this commu-nity. We thank all the members for their continued support of our activities.”

Best regards from your HOA Board,Scot Spier, Jeff Thunder, Marshall Dirks, Alexandra Dailey, Dan Steimel, Ralph Tompkins and Rick Madsen.

2016 HOA ASSESSMENTSThank you to all that have paid their assessments in a timely manner. The second installment of the HOA dues was due on April 1, 2016. Contact Dan Pavelich If you would like to set up auto withdrawal. Payments are due the first of January, April, July and October.

2016 SCHEDULE of OPEN HOA BOARD MEETINGSAll HOA Members are encouraged to attend the Open Board Meet-ings. The meetings are a casual way of meeting with neighbors, old and new, keep informed of what is going on as well as an opportunity to ask questions, offer suggestions and take an active part in your neighborhood.

The 2016 dates are: April 4, July 11, October 3, and November 7. The 2017 Budget and Election will be held at the November 7, 2016 meeting. Location and time of meeting will be provided to all HOA members via USPS and/or email by our property manager. The Meeting announcement will also be published on our website, www.BridgesofRivermist.org.

BE ON THE LOOKOUT...Help keep our community beautiful and safe! If you witness a viola-tion of the HOA Rules, which are available on our website, you are encouraged to contact our property manager, Dan Pavelich. If you see any suspicious individuals or see questionable activity, please do not hesitate to call the DeKalb Police Department.

DeKalb POLICE BEAT

The weather is warming up! Spring is always a welcome time of year for us in Northern Illinois. We can all get outside, spruce up the yard, say “hello” to some neighbors we haven’t seen lately, open up our windows and breathe in some fresh air.

As the days get longer and we spend more time outside, there are

a few basic safety tips to keep in mind.

• Watch out for children – this is always a big one when the weather gets nice. Kids are on bikes and scooters. They’re running and play-ing. They’re having fun and being kids. Who hasn’t seen a kid chase a bouncing basketball or soccer ball into the roadway without giving a single thought as to whether or not a car may be approaching?

• Stick to routes that are well-traveled when out walking, jogging, or biking. Avoid isolated areas with little foot traffic or vehicle traffic. If you enjoy evening walks and runs, stay on well-lit paths and roads. If you become injured or experience any sort of health issue while out exercising, it will be much easier for you to summon assistance if you are in a well-travelled area. And you could potentially meet lots of new people who share your interest in exercise.

• Mind your doors and keys. Do not leave keys in an unattended vehicle, even if it is parked in your garage. And speaking of garages, with warmer weather we will see lots of garage doors open. If you see a neighbor’s garage open for an extended period, consider giving them a call to make sure they realize it’s still open.

• It is tax season, and IRS scammers are out in full force. Many Illinois residents have been receiving phone calls claiming they owe unpaid taxes. Remember to never give out personal information over the phone, even if the caller claims to be from the IRS. The IRS will not call and threaten you about unpaid taxes, ever. Scam IRS calls can be reported to the IRS at 1-800-366-4484. If you’ve fallen victim to a scam like this, you should report it to the police. Our non-emer-gency number is 815-748-8400. Don’t let shame or embarrassment keep you from reporting a crime. More information on this scam can be found at www.irs.gov. Also, warn your friends and neighbors, especially seniors to watch out for Tax Refund Anticipation Loans. More information can be found at www.illinoisattorneygeneral.gov.

• A word about solicitors. DeKalb has an ordinance requiring solicitors to register with the city. Most companies comply with this requirement because it is common practice in communities through-out the state and country. When a company registers with us, we do a background check on anyone who will be going door to door. There are, however, some companies who will solicit without registering with the city, which means there’s no background check on the person who may be standing on your doorstep. We’ve seen an increase lately in unregistered solicitors. Please report any suspicious activity relat-ing to solicitors in your neighborhood. We do not recommend ever letting a solicitor into your home or giving out personal information. Finally, if a solicitor does have a permit that does not mean that the City endorses them or their product. It only means they have regis-tered with the City and have passed a background check.

• Unused medications – In the last issue of BRM, I mentioned the drop box in our lobby at 700 W. Lincoln Highway where you can deposit old, unused, and unwanted prescription drugs. We also hold Drug Take-back events and we’ve got one coming up on April 30th from 10am -2pm. This is the perfect chance to clean out your cup-boards and medicine cabinets of these products. Properly disposing of medications helps to keep these products out of the landfills and out of the hands of kids and other adults who shouldn’t have them. Use the drop box 24/7, when it’s convenient for you or come visit us on April 30th! No liquids or sharps please.

From My Kitchen TO YOURSSubmitted by Marshall and Jodi Dirks

A Dirks family favorite way before jodi joined the Dirks family. Marshall’s mom got it from a friend when they lived in Champaign, IL and she passed it on. Marshall said that this is a recipe that you may find somewhat unusual but the kids like it and if the kids are fans…..it has to be good.

Beef CurryPlace the following in your crock pot:1 large onion finely chopped 2 cloves of garlic sliced/minced2 lbs. of beef stew meat (frozen or fresh)

Blend the following in a small bowl and add to crock pot.2 tablespoons lemon juice2-4 teaspoons of *curry powder (4 teaspoons if using yellow/2 teaspoons if using red) *use curry powder to taste- Jodi uses about 4 TABLE-SPOONS- she finds less too bland

Lastly add 1 cup of tomato juice or tomato sauce, 1 teaspoon salt, 2 cups of beef broth.Cover crock pot. Cook on high setting all day if using frozen beef. Cook low all day if using fresh beef. Thicken with a mixture of 2 tablespoons of corn starch and 2 tablespoons of cold water which has been stirred or shaken before adding to curry.

Serve over rice with a selection of toppings: peanuts, raisins, coco-nut, pineapple chunks, banana slices, and sunflower nuts as well as apple/orange relish or cucumber relish (a mixture of chopped cucumber, green onions, celery, and tomato with seasoned salt.)

Community CONCERNS

In 2012, the State of Illinois banned elec-tronic waste from landfills. Since that time, DeKalb County Health Department’s Solid Waste Program has worked hard to ensure the availability of a convenient electronics recycling program.

There are five electronics recycling collections held each month throughout the County.

As of July of 2015, the County’s Electronic Waste (EWaste) vendor stopped taking Cathode Ray Tube Televisions (CRT TVs). As an al-ternative, residents were able to recycle CRT TVs at Best Buy. Howev-er, Best Buy recently announced they would no longer accept any TVs or monitors. Vendors have stopped accepting CRT TVs, at no charge, due to costs. These costs are higher because CRT TVs and monitors contain lead, which means the materials have no resale value. Some options are to call DC Trash (815-758- 7274) or New Life Electronics (866-929-5551) to recycle CRT TVs. Both vendors charge a fee.

The County E-Waste sites will continue to accept all electronics except CRT TVs (the County sites still accept CRT monitors) at no cost to residents because the service is funded by the DeKalb County Solid Waste Program. According to Michelle Gibson, the Solid Waste Program Specialist, this continues to be a statewide problem and Illi-nois Counties are working with the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency and Legislators on a solution. For the complete schedule and a list of acceptable items, please visit our website at health.dekalb-county.org or call Michelle Gibson 815-748-2408.

Attention DeKalb Water, Sewer, and Refuse CustomersThe City of DeKalb will be changing from a three month billing cycle to a two month billing cycle for water, sewer, and refuse services. If you have any questions regarding this change in the billing cycle, please contact the City of DeKalb’s Water Billing at 815-748-2085.

GARDENER’S GREEN THUMB ~ Submitted by Donna Borthwick Shared from PlantCareToday

5 Uses for Old Coffee Grounds in The Garden

Coffee grounds in the garden? Wait… what?! Don’t think of throwing away used coffee grounds! They are just as valuable as the coffee you made from them. Below are ways on what can coffee grounds be used for in your garden. #1 – Ground Mulch

Coffee grounds make an excellent ground mulch, especially for acid loving plants like blueberry bushes, huckleberry, holly bushes, azaleas, rhododendrons, juneberry, gardenias, camellias, trillium, and begonias. It’s a bit ironic but the dark brown remains of your morning coffee will turn your hydrangea flowers bright blue! Evergreen trees are also fond of acidic soils, as are dogwood trees, magnolia trees, willow oaks, and beech trees. Garden vegetables that prefer slightly acidic soils include peppers (all types), radishes, sweet potatoes, egg-plant, tomatoes, parsley, rhubarb, and potatoes (even though the soils in Idaho are predominantly alkaline). When you mulch with coffee grounds, spread a layer about one-half inch think or your grounds will mold too readily and they could make your soil too acidic.

#2 – Add Coffee Grounds to Your Compost PileAdding coffee grounds in garden soil is a good way to build the soil. Coffee contains about 1.5 percent nitrogen by weight so coffee grounds will add a great deal of nitrogen to your home made compost soil. However, it is also important to keep in mind the acidity of cof-fee grounds and balance this out with yard scraps, kitchen scraps, and a good source of calcium carbonate like wood ashes or lime to bal-ance out the pH and also add more phosphorous. Keep in mind too that the fungus that grows on coffee tends to use up a lot of nitrogen, so again, it’s a good idea to have a good mixture of materials in your compost.#3 – Create a Ring of ProtectionAre slugs attacking your strawberries? Ants eating your tomato plants? Are snails munching on your lettuce? You can eliminate this problem by placing a protective ring of used coffee grounds around these vulnerable plants so they’ll be protected like a castle protected by a moat. These common garden pests don’t like the smell, acidity, or texture of coffee grounds so they are repelled by them. Best of all, us-ing this simple all natural solution can help you avoid using any toxic pesticides around your food!

#4 – Free, Effective, and Easy to Make Liquid FertilizerCoffee beans are full of nutrients like nitrogen, phosphorus, potas-sium, copper, and magnesium. The used grounds still contain a high concentration of these nutrients. It is very easy to use coffee grounds as fertilizer by making an effective liquid food. Simply put about one-half pound of used grounds in a five-gallon bucket, fill with water, and stir with a stick. Let this sit a few days and the nutrients from the coffee will seep into the water and the resulting liquid is your liquid fertilizer. This is an excellent alternative to the chemical fertilizers you buy at the store which contain harmful chemicals like petrochemi-cals, arsenic, and cadmium. Of course, unlike the store bought liquid fertilizers, your homemade liquid fertilizer is free!

#5 – Shoo Away the Neighbor CatsHumans and cats don’t always think alike. While we relish the smell of fresh ground coffee beans and fresh brewed coffee, cats are repelled by the same coffee aroma! Thus, if you have some neighborhood kit-ties (or your own cats) digging up your garden, try spreading some coffee grounds around the edge of your garden!

Final TipIf you don’t drink coffee at home, or don’t drink enough of it to sup-ply your garden, many coffee shops like Starbucks give their grounds away for free! You could also ask any coffee shop or restaurant you patronize to save their coffee grounds for you and they’d likely oblige you. You can thank them later by bringing them some beautiful fresh flowers or garden fresh vegetables.

Car Service Tips• Try out a shop on a minor repair first, to see if you’re satisfied. • Call the Better Business Bureau or the Bureau of Automotive Repair to see if any complaints have been filed against an auto shop, or actions taken against it. • If a shop says it replaced a part, ask to see it. • Always get a written estimate of the work ahead of time. Don’t pay for some-thing you did not approve. • Check your owner’s manual first, to see what should be done for general maintenance of your vehicle. • Steer clear of junk parts. • If your dispute is with the mechanic, don’t hesitate to ask to see the service manager. • If you have any car complaints call the Bureau of Automotive Repair’s Hotline @ (800) 952-5210.

KEEP YOUR PETS SAFE THIS SPRING!

Watch lilies and candy - chocolate is toxic to cats and dogs, and all true lilies can be fatal if ingested by cats. And be mindful, kitties love to nibble on colorful plastic Easter grass, leading to an obstructed digestive tract, severe vomiting and dehydration. Screens are a Must- Many pet parents welcome the breezy days of spring by opening their windows. Cats are apt to jump or fall through unscreened windows so be sure yours are in all of your windows.Buckle Up - While most dogs love to feel the wind on their furry faces, don’t allow them to ride in the beds of pick-up trucks or stick their heads

out of moving-car windows. Flying debris and insects can cause inner ear or eye injuries and lung infections, and abrupt stops or turns can cause major injury, or worse! Spring Cleaning - Spring cleaning is a time-honored tradition in many households, but be sure to keep all cleaners and chemicals out of your pets’ way! Almost all cleaning products, even all natural ones, contain chemicals that may be harmful to pets. Ah Ah Achoo - Like people, pets can be allergic to foods, dust, plants and pollens. Allergic reactions in dogs and cats can cause itching, minor sniffling and sneezing, or life-threatening anaphylactic shock to insect bites and stings. Pesky Little Critters - April showers bring May flowers—and an onslaught of bugs! Make sure your pet is on year-round heartworm preventive medication, as well as a flea and tick control program.
