Dear Parishioners,

Today’s Scripture passages truly engage our imagina-

tion: the brutality of the scene in Maccabees; Paul’s letter to

the Thessalonians depicting God as a vigilant sentinel; and

Luke’s gospel enticing us to visualize the resurrected life.

Vastly different imagery, with one central theme:

Whatever we know of this life pales in comparison to the full-

ness of life in Christ that is promised to us in the resurrection.

And the reason we are not able to fully understand the resur-

rection is precisely because it is a wondrous mystery that far

exceeds the limits of the human mind. Though the resurrection

is a mystery beyond our comprehension, images and concepts

from the teachings of Jesus and sacred Scripture can help us

make sense of it for our lives.

Scripture reminds us that our relationship with God is

the reason for our existence. The resurrection is more than just

something we hope or believe will happen upon our death. It

represents the basis, promise and fulfillment of our relation-

ship with God.

The first reading assures us we may be deprived of life

in this world, but the King of the world will raise us up to live

forever with him. There is much to consider in this statement.

First, there will be suffering and death in this world, events

and experience that will cause us pain. But that is not the end

of the story.

The statement continues with the declaration of God

as the King of the world. No matter what the world throws at

us - whatever pain, suffering and death come our way - God is

greater than all that. He rules over that. God is king.

Therefore, God has the final say about our eternity –

and he wants it to be, as Jesus says, where we are like angels;

and we are the children of God. God rescues us from the

depths of sin and death - raising us up, out of the darkness and

into the light of Christ. He does this first at our baptism, and

again upon her death - in our resurrection to new life.

God does not just raise us up, he raises us up to live

forever with him. The one who created us out of love is faithful

to us in all things, and remains with us through our suffering.

God encourages us and strengthens us, and guards us from

evil.

Our relationship with God is not just about this world;

it is about living forever with him.

Did you know: Veneration of Saints

The saints are those persons, baptized in Christ, who were faithful to the Gospel in their lives and now share

eternal life with God. The Church recognizes their holiness of life and deeds of charity as examples to all of

us. The saints stand as models of Christian discipleship and intercede for us before the throne of God.

The early Church always held the memory of the saints in high honor. They remembered the heroic witness

of the martyrs who gave their lives for Christ. Later they added to that list those, who without a martyr’s

death, gave exemplary witness of God’s love and charity toward their neighbors. The first Christians visited

the tombs of the saints, celebrated their feasts and sought their intercession.

This tradition continues today in the Church as we join in fellowship with the saints in praising God for our

salvation in Christ.

Relics Relics are the physical remains and effects of saints, which are considered worthy of our honor since they are

representative of those persons now in glory with God. When we honor the relics of the saints, we praise

God for his action in the life of the saint, venerate their memory and seek their intercession as we strive to

imitate their virtue in loving God and neighbor. During the early Church St. Jerome made it clear where the

emphasis belonged: Relics of martyrs should not be worshiped, but they should be venerated "in order the

better to adore Him whose martyrs they are.”

There are three classes of relics: First-class relics are parts of the bodies of saints and the instruments of

Christ's passion. Second-class relics include items of clothing and objects used by a saint, and instruments of

torture used on a martyr. Third-class relics are objects or cloths touched to either first- or second-class relics.

Honoring saints through their relics should not be confused with superstitious beliefs.

Communion of Saints This term, recited in the Creed, refers to all those people who died and went to heaven or those who went to

purgatory first but because of our prayers, are now in heaven.

Pio Regional School or Saint Richard PREP, please

call Maryellen Carroll at the Rectory. Every child

seeking these sacraments needs to be part of the Sacra-

ment Formation class. Please call ASAP to receive the

entire schedule of activities and requirements.

Pre-Jordan Classes In preparation for Baptism Pre-Jordan classes are held

Sundays in St. Richard Church after the 11:30 Mass.

(Dates are subject to change.) The parents of the child are required to attend the class;

godparents are also welcome but not required to attend.

Please call the rectory to make arrangements for the

Baptism and to attend the class. After you have attended

the class and acquired certificates of eligibility for

your godparents, you may then call the rectory for an

appointment to book the date of your choosing.

USED EYEGLASSES WANTED

The Adelphia Lions Club is sponsoring a used eye-

glass drive. Any used eyeglasses can be dropped off

in the container in the back of Church. Thank you so

MOTHER BONIFACE SPIRITUALITY CENTER,

3501 Solly Avenue in northeast Philadelphia is offer-

ing a workshop for the Hispanic community entitled:

"Addictions: Prevention, Diagnosis, and Treatment" on Friday, November 11th from 7-9:30 p.m. The ob-

jective of this workshop is to raise awareness and in-

crease knowledge about addiction and how it affects

our families, community and society. The presenter for

this retreat is Sara Serrano, BSW, who has more than

30 years experience as a drug and alcohol counselor.

She also trains parents and foster parents dealing with

addiction in their families. There is no charge for this

In order to help spread the word of what a great parish

we have here; I am looking for block captains who will

take a few extra bulletins home with them and place

them in the neighbors doors.

You don't have to preach, explain or even talk about your

faith. You are just letting you neighbors know that we, as

a parish family, are happy to welcome them and we have

many great ministries and services to offer them here.

We are looking to begin this by the First Sunday of Ad-

vent. If you feel that you are able to do this, sign ups will

be next weekend after all the Masses. Thank you again
