Faith Matters sPeaker series

“To do their part, adult Catholics …must be women and men of prayer whose faith is alive and vital, grounded in a deep commitment to the person and message of Jesus.”

-Our Hearts Were Burning Within Us, USCCB

The Adult Faith Formation Ministry at St. Cecilia supports parishioners as they strive to grow closer to Christ and deepen their knowledge of the Catholic faith. We of-fer ongoing classes, one-time speaker events, missions, bible studies, and prayer groups in English and Spanish. We coordinate the RCIA (Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults) program to assist those adults becoming Catholic. We work as well with adult Catholics who want to complete their Sacraments of initiation. This year we are glad to announce our inaugural Faith Matters Speaker Series, which will offer a program each month reflecting on what it means to be a Catholic in today’s culture. The series will kick off on Monday, September 17 at 7 pm. Spend an evening with Deacon Larry Vaclavik, M.A. Phil, M.A.T.S., as he reflects with us on the question of how we are to live our Catholic faith as voters in this year’s mid-term elections. For more than a decade, Deacon Larry has been speaking on the issues of faithful citizenship, social justice, moral theology and the great freedoms and responsibilities we cherish as citizens.

Whether you are interested in increasing your knowledge of the scripture and the Church, wanting to deepen your prayer life, learning to defend the faith, looking for community, struggling or searching, we have something for you. Please read the bulletin and go to our website for specific information about ministries and pro-grams that will be starting up again this fall.

the great adventure

Join the Choir!

Rehearsals for the St. Cecilia Choir resumed on August 29. We have 40 choir members, but our goal this year is 50! This is a great time for new members to join because we just got started for the year. Previous music experience is helpful, but certain-ly not required. Participants must simply possess a reasonably good singing voice (the ability to match and maintain pitch) and be willing to commit to the schedule. This choir is for adults and young adults from high school to the "young at heart". We sing each week at the 11:00 am Mass and rehearse on Wednesday evenings from 7:00 to 8:45 pm in the Church. For more in-formation, contact Andrew at [email protected].

Embracing Christ at Mass: How do you Partici-pate?

As the work of Christ liturgy (Mass) is also an action of his Church. It makes the Church present and manifests her as the visible sign of the communion in Christ between God and men. It engages the faithful in the new life of the community and involves the "conscious, active, and fruitful participation" of everyone.... it must be preced-ed by evangelization, faith, and conversion. It can then produce its fruits in the lives of the faithful: new life in the Spirit, involvement in the mission of the Church, and service to her unity.

8 | Twenty-Third Sunday in Ordinary Time

"The future of the world and of the Church passes through the family."

-Pope John Paul II, Familiaris Consortio #75

Integrating the latest findings from modern sci-ence with the timeless teaching of the faith and the wisdom of the saints, The Choice Wine: 7 Steps to a Superabundant Marriage places authentic marital happiness within every cou-ple's reach.

Studies show that people who are married are happier, healthier and have more financial re-sources then people who are not married.

"Christ doesn't want your marriages just to have enough ... he wants your marriages to be superabundant!" -Steve Bollman

The Choice Wine puts couples on a path to su-perabundance through seven simple, yet high-ly effective steps:

• Honor your wedding vows• Use money for other people• Give God some of your time• Set your mind on the things above• Find God in yourself• Find God in other people• Make it easy to be good and hard to be bad

By following these steps, couples can reduce the probability of divorce to essentially zero and increase the probability of having a superabun-dant marriage to almost 4 out of 5 !
