Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

Recent events have troubled and grieved our hearts as Catholics. Some of us are angry, and some of us have no words to describe the seeming chaos that is going on in the church right now. It is ever so tempting to give up on her and leave her. And yet, as I mentioned in my homily last Sunday, we know that we have had terrible weeks before if we but look at where we have been. The Catholic Church has survived because we know, in our heart of hearts, that yes, it is human, but more importantly, it is divine. Ultimately, we put our trust in God more than in men. We believe that God’s providence will direct the dark events of our current moment to their gracious ends.

We may feel helpless at this time. In our helplessness and sorrow, we cannot forget our hope that God always works in mysterious ways. We only need to believe that those mysterious ways may include all of us as his agents of provi-dence. God has always raised saints who serve as beacons of light to a broken and damaged church. If the church is to overcome this crisis, the whole Body, and not just the hierarchy, has to conform to the Head, Jesus Christ. This means that we are all challenged to be who God needs us to be at this point in time.

Let us pray for Pope Francis and for all those who are suffering. Let us lift them up to the comforting care of Mary, the Mother of the Church.

In the meantime, enjoy your Labor Day holiday! Relax and be free of labors!

Sincerely in Christ,

Fr. Francis

Embracing Christ at Mass: Why do you attend?Embracing Christ at Mass: Catechesis (learning the faith) leads to a faith journey, which is expressed and sustained by listening to Scripture, by celebration (liturgy), by charitable service, and witness of lived experiences. Scripture, when used to its fullest, can not only influence but also transform one’s life. One of the primary ways in which Catholics are called to experience and reflect on Scripture is within the context of the Eucharistic Liturgy. For this reason references are given to where these key Scripture passages appear in the Lectionary for Mass. (The Framework of Lifelong Faith Formation)

noW is a great tiMe to Join the choir!Rehearsals for the St. Cecilia Choir will resume on August 29. We have 40 choir members, but our goal this year is 50! This is a great time for new members to join because we just got started for the year. Previous music experience is helpful, but certainly not required. Participants must simply possess a reasonably good singing voice (the ability to match and maintain pitch) and be willing to commit to the schedule. This choir is for adults and young adults from high school to the "young at heart". We sing each week at the 11:00 am Mass and rehearse on Wednesday evenings from 7:00 to 8:45 pm in the Church. For more information, contact Andrew at [email protected].

8 | Twenty-Second Sunday in Ordinary Time

"The future of the world and of the Church passes through the family."

-Pope John Paul II, Familiaris Consortio #75

Integrating the latest findings from modern sci-ence with the timeless teaching of the faith and the wisdom of the saints, The Choice Wine: 7 Steps to a Superabundant Marriage places authentic marital happiness within every cou-ple's reach.

Studies show that people who are married are happier, healthier and have more financial re-sources then people who are not married.

"Christ doesn't want your marriages just to have enough ... he wants your marriages to be superabundant!" -Steve Bollman

The Choice Wine puts couples on a path to su-perabundance through seven simple, yet high-ly effective steps:

• Honor your wedding vows• Use money for other people• Give God some of your time• Set your mind on the things above• Find God in yourself• Find God in other people• Make it easy to be good and hard to be bad

By following these steps, couples can reduce the probability of divorce to essentially zero and increase the probability of having a superabun-dant marriage to almost 4 out of 5 !
