Purpose of Workbook

This workbook is designed to provide an easy method of studying the Book of Revelation. Thereare some who feel that Revelation is too difficult or cannot be understood. The purpose of this study isto show that Revelation can be understood and, most importantly, can be interpreted by using the Bibleas the basis of interpretation There will be no need for a great knowledge of history. The onlyrequirement is a willingness to study and understand the Bible.

Although this workbook may be used alone, it is designed as a study guide for the commentary onRevelation titled “Revelation For Christians Today”. Answers to all questions in this workbook can befound in the corresponding passages in that commentary. References and page numbers are given inthis workbook to facilitate the ease of study. References showing page numbers in the commentary aregiven in the following form: (C-pg. 183). In addition, scripture references will be given which relate tothe questions so that the Bible may be its own interpreter.

The lessons are designed to take you through a systematic study of Revelation. Questions aredesigned to emphasize the major points in the visions and illustrations are given to aid inunderstanding. Chapters are studied in a specific order to let the interpretation of Revelation build as itis studied. Once Revelation is interpreted by using the Bible as the source of interpretation, we shouldbe able to arrive at one understanding of this marvelous book, instead of the many which are presentlyproposed.

For a more complete interpretation of Revelation, please refer to “Revelation for Christians Today”.Answers to question not addressed in this workbook may he found in that commentary.

Questions in this workbook are based on the text of the Authorized King James Version. But, thisshould present little or no problems to those desiring to use other versions.

Parallel Symbolism

As we begin this study of Revelation, we must first examine how the book is written. It is abook of symbols. It is written in apocalyptic literature which makes use of various symbols to describereal events. Many of the prophets also used symbolic writings as they described the first coming ofChrist and the church. Since these Old Testament prophecies have been fulfilled, we can examine thescriptures and understand how these symbols were used. Once we understand how these symbols areused in scripture, we can apply those meanings to the symbols in Revelation. This will give us aBiblical interpretation of the book of Revelation.

There is a tremendous amount of symbolism used throughout the scriptures. We have longrecognized that many people, items and events in the Old Testament were types of greater things tocome in the New Testament. For example, the tabernacle was a likeness of the church; the great floodwas a likeness of the final destruction of the world; and Moses was a likeness of Christ. It is easyenough to pick out these individual parallels of events to follow during the Christian age, but we mustalso understand the overall picture of symbolism dealing with the Christian age. This big picture ofOld Testament symbolism is extremely important in the study of Revelation. The major events in thehistory of the nation of Israel were physical likenesses of spiritual events to follow during the time ofChrist and the Christian dispensation. We call this, "parallel symbolism." By studying the sequence ofthese physical events of the Old Testament, we can learn much about the spiritual events to come inthe gospel age. A great deal of information is givenabout this type of symbolism in the commentary onpages XIII – XIV (revised edition).

This big picture of physical/spiritualparallelism can be easily illustrated. Study closely thetwo drawings on this page. Immediately you willnotice that the major events in the history of theIsraelite nation parallel the major events of theChristian dispensation. The events dealing with Israelwere literal, physical events that took place in thephysical lives of the Israelites. They parallel the majorspiritual events that take place in the spiritual lives ofChristians today. In this lesson, we will explore theoverall picture, but in lessons to follow, each of thesemajor events will be studied in detail. These parallelswill then be used to understand the symbolism beingemployed in the book of Revelation.

PHYSICAL KINGDOM / SPIRITUAL KINGDOMThe nation of Israel was a literal, physical kingdom of this earth. The major events pictured

actually took place in the physical lives of the people. They represent spiritual events that take place inthe Christian dispensation. Discuss each of the following parallels and think of others you may know.

1. When Christ came to the earth the first time, allmankind was in the bondage of sin. They wereslaves to sin. (Jno. 8:34)

2. Christ made it possible for all mankind to escapethe bondage of sin by giving his blood on thecross. By our obedience to the gospel, we crossthe spiritual Red Sea.

3. After Christ shed his blood on the cross, hesymbolically gave his new law on mount Zion.Micah 4:2 states, "For the law shall go forth ofZion, and the word of the Lord from Jerusalem."This law, the gospel, is for all nations.

4. Christians are the chosen people of God today.As people obey the gospel of Christ, they arecrossing the spiritual Red Sea, and Christ isleading them toward their Promised Land ofheaven.

5. The church is a spiritual kingdom and its lawsare spiritual. The church wages spiritual waragainst the evils of this world, not physical waragainst world governments.

6. The church is situated in the wilderness of thisworld today. It is awaiting the spiritualPromised Land of heaven. This symbolic periodof time is described in Revelation as 1000 years.The spiritual 1000 years parallel the physical 40years.

7. While the church is in the wilderness of thisworld, God will feed his people and care fortheir spiritual needs. The church is nourished onspiritual manna - God's Word.

8. Before the church can enter its spiritualPromised Land of heaven, Christ must come toearth the second time.

9. When Christ comes to earth again, he will takethe church to the spiritual Promised Land ofheaven. It will be a place of rest for all thosewho have followed God and will be a place ofspiritual bliss.

1. As Moses came on the scene in Old Testament times,the children of Israel were slaves to the Egyptians.They were in physical bondage.

2. Moses led the children of Israel out of physicalbondage by leading them across the Red Sea.

3. After crossing the Red Sea, the children of Israeltraveled to mount Sinai. There Moses ascended upthe mountain and brought back the TenCommandments. This law was given to one nation- Israel.

4. Israel was God's chosen people. They received theTen Commandments and followed Moses as he ledthem out of bondage across the Red Sea to theirPromised Land of Canaan.

5. Israel was a physical kingdom. They were a nationwith laws and government. Many times they wagedwar against the ungodly nations of this world.

6. The time period in which Israel traveled from theRed Sea to the Jordan River is parallel to the periodof time the church is in today. They wandered in thewilderness for 40 years as they awaited theirPromised Land.

7. While the Israelites were in the wilderness, God fedthem and took care of all their needs. They werenourished on physical manna.

8. Before the children of Israel could enter theirPromised Land, they had to cross the Jordan River.

9. After the children of Israel crossed the Jordan River,they dwelt in the land that God had promised them.It was a place of great value that flowed with milkand honey. It met all their physical needs.

The above comparisons between the physical kingdom of Israel and the spiritual kingdom ofthe church are very important in interpreting Revelation. This type of symbolism is used extensively inthe book. The major concept that must be understood is that Revelation is dealing mainly with thespiritual nature of the church. Once we understand how the physical kingdom of Israel parallels thespiritual kingdom of the church, we can then use those parallels to understand the messages ofRevelation.

Heb. 10:1 states, "For the law having a shadow of good things to come." The law of Moses wasa likeness of a better law to come which was the gospel. Many things in the Old Testament weresymbolic of greater things to come in the Christian age.

Numerology

In Revelation numbers are also used as symbols. We must understand that in many cases thenumbers really carry little or no numerical value. They are used to describe. They give informationabout the symbols being used rather than giving a definite count of something. In some cases we stilluse numbers in our own language in this manner. For example, the number 13 is often associated withbad luck. Many high rise buildings have no 13th floor for this very reason. This is the way numbers areused in Revelation. The Jewish people had many such uses of numbers in their language. Many ofthese uses came directly from the ways they are used in the scriptures because the Jews were sofamiliar with the scriptures and the history of their nation as outlined in those scriptures.

Please study the following information given on numbers. Discuss the symbolic meaning of each of the numbers and think of other examples of how these numbers are used throughout the scriptures that would help understand its symbolic meaning. (C-pg. 7-8)

Symbolic Description of Jesus Christ(1:1-1-20)

This first chapter of Revelation gives Christians amarvelous symbolic description of our Lord and Savior, JesusChrist. By studying each of these symbols, we gain a muchbetter understanding of the characteristics of Jesus. We areshown how important the teachings of Jesus are to the worldtoday. Several symbols are used to describe the purity andholiness of Jesus. Others are used to describe the importanceof the teachings of our Lord. The closeness of the relationshipthe church enjoys with our Lord is also explained as we seeJesus standing in the midst of the seven candlesticks.

There are symbols used and defined in this chapterwhich are important throughout the book. This makes chapterone an excellent place to begin the study of the text. Thesymbols are fairly easy, and we get a good understanding ofhow symbolic language is used to describe people and events.

As you study the picture, keep in mind that the seven golden candlesticks symbolize the churchand the other symbols describe Jesus. As was studied in the first lesson, seven is the number of divinecompleteness. Therefore, even though these seven churches are named in chapters 2 and 3, they aresymbolic of the complete church throughout the Christian age. The characteristics and relationshipsdescribed in this chapter apply to us as Christians today just as they did to Christians of the firstcentury.

This vision shows Jesus standing in the midst of the seven candlesticks. We must always bethankful that, no matter where the church is located, Jesus is in our midst.

Throne of God (Chapters 4 and 5)

One very important concept must be understood before this lesson is studied. This vision inchapter 4 is a description of the Throne of God as it exists at this present time. It is the throne thatChristians are subject to today. The main point of the vision in chapter 4 is to show that God is rulingon His throne today and that Christians are the gathered around His throne.

The vision begins in chapter 4 by giving us a marvelousdescription of the glorious throne of God. In chapter 5, Christ ispictured as taking his place on the throne beside God. This tookplace at the ascension of our Lord (Heb. 10:12). The visionexplains that Jesus was the only being who could take the booksealed with seven seals out of God's hand and open the seals. Hewas able to do this because he was crucified for our sins. SinceJesus has ascended to heaven and is seated on the right hand ofGod, we understand that this magnificent and most powerfulthrone is in existence today and we are subjects to it. 1 Cor. 6:16states, “for ye are the temple of the living God; as God hath said,I will dwell in them, and walk in them; and I will be their God,and they shall be my people.” The church is the spiritual templeof God and God dwells in that temple. Therefore, although theliteral throne of God is located in heaven, the spiritual throne ofGod is located in the church today. We do not have to wait untileternity to stand before this throne. See Rev. 7:14-15. Thosewho are in the spiritual kingdom of God, the church, are gathered around this throne. The throne scenein chapters 4 and 5 is a description of a spiritual throne, which Christians who dwell in God’s spiritualkingdom, are subject to today.

One very important concept in this chapter that should be noted for later study is that when weare made kings and priests we reign on the earth (5:10). There are many different interpretations in theChristendom world today concerning when we will reign on this earth. Our reign on this earth is duringthis present Christian age as we serve our Lord in his church. Christ is seated on his throne and we arepresently reigning with him as kings and priests. See Rev. 1:6 and 3:21. In chapter 20:4, we are toldthat we reign with Christ for 1000 years. This 1000-year period of time is symbolic of this presentChristian dispensation. When these relationships in the book of Revelation are understood, themeanings of these symbols become very understandable. Read the related passages mentioned aboveand comment on the consistency of these symbols.

Holy City - The Church(Chapters 21 - 22)

In order to properly interpret Revelation, it is extremely important that we first understand thesubject of the book. Revelation deals with the spiritual city of God, the church. The prophets of the OldTestament used symbolic language to prophesy the coming of the church, and God uses many of thosesame symbols in Revelation to describe the church as it exists in the world today. Also, there are manypatterns to be studied that will help in understanding the true nature of the church. For example, thereare at least four major symbols in the Old Testament that are physical types or patterns of the churchthat Jesus built. They are: (1) Israel, (2) Tabernacle, (3) Temple, and (4) Jerusalem. All of thesesymbolically represent the church. It should be very helpful at this time to read the section in thecommentary on pages 389 - 393 entitled, "The Holy Jerusalem."

In light of these passages, it is evident that the beautiful description of the glorious city inchapters 21 and 22 is a description of the spiritual kingdom of God, the church. As these chapters arestudied, keep in mind that the children of Israel were looking for a better kingdom (Acts 1:6). Theyexpected Christ to establish an earthly kingdom, but instead, he established a great spiritual kingdom,the church.

Study the following drawing and discuss how this is a symbolic description of the church, thespiritual city of God. It should be noted that mount Zion is included in this drawing because it is alsoused as a symbolic description of the church and is a very important concept to understand as weprogress through this study.

The Bride of Christ – The Lamb’s Wife

Wall of the City

In ancient times walls were built around cities for protection from their enemies. The gates ofthe city could be closed at night or during an attack. People felt secure because of these great walls.Only those who were supposed to be in the city were allowed inside the wall. As Christians of the firstcentury read this beautiful description of the great spiritual city, they were very familiar with thepurpose of the wall. The symbolic wall of this great spiritual city has the same meaning in spiritualterms to Christians today as the physical walls did to the people in those times. It provides a place ofrefuge from the sins of the world. See Isa. 4:2-6.

A prophecy is made concerning this spiritual city in Isa. 26:1. It states, “In that day shall thissong be sung in the land of Judah; We have a strong city; salvation will God appoint for walls andbulwarks.” Those inside the church have passed through this great spiritual wall of salvation byobeying the gospel. This wall separates the church from the spiritual darkness of the world. Isa. 26:2states, “Open ye the gates, that the righteous nation which keepeth the truth may enter in.” Those whoobey the gospel are made righteous by the blood of Christ and pass through the gates into this greatspiritual city.

Souls in Bondage - Great Tribulation(7:9-17)

In this lesson we begin the study of the great parallel between the Israelite nation in the time ofMoses and the church today. Please refer back to the first lesson, “Parallel Symbolism,” for a review ofthe overall big picture. Several of the visions of Revelation can be studied and understood by using thisparallel symbolism. The lessons in this workbook will follow the order of events as illustrated in the

following pictures. Our understanding of Revelationshould build as we progress through this study and themeanings of these symbols will become more obviousand easier to understand. When this study is finished, itis hoped that a very consistent and understandable studyof Revelation will have been achieved. In this lesson wewill concentrate on the time the Israelite Nation was inbondage in Egypt. The parallel between that period oftime and the first coming of Christ will be studied andapplications will be made to sections in Revelation,which deal with that symbolism.

Study the two pictures on the following page,especially the parallels concerning Egyptian bondageand the crossing of the Red Sea. The children of Israelwere in great physical tribulation during the time ofMoses. This parallels the spiritual situation of allmankind before Christcame to earth the first time.

The Law of Moses was not capable of taking away the sins of the people.Heb. 10:3-4 states, "But in those sacrifices there is a remembrance againmade of sins every year. For it is not possible that the blood of bulls andof goats should take away sins." Mankind needed a Savior to removetheir sins. In the likeness of Moses, Christ came to this world to lead manout of the spiritual tribulation of sin. In Jno. 8:32-34, Jesus told the Jewsthat the truth would make them free. They replied that they had neverbeen in bondage to any man, and then asked what he meant that theyshould be made free. Jesus answered them and said, "Verily, verily, I sayunto you, Whosoever committeth sin is the servant of sin." Everyonewho had lived on the earth had sinned, therefore everyone was in thebondage of sin. Jesus gave his blood in order that man might be madefree from the bondage of sin.

The 144,000(7:1-8)

A great misunderstanding concerning the number 144,000exists in the religious world today. We must remember thatnumbers are used symbolically in Revelation. They represent ordescribe something rather than giving a definite count. Thisnumber is derived from the use of two other symbolic numbers, 12and 1000. The number twelve is associated with the two laws thatGod gave mankind. One thousand represents ultimatecompleteness. If you take the multitudes of people who lived underthese two laws and multiply 12 X 12, the product is 144. Multiply144 times the complete number 1000 and the result is 144,000.They symbolic number, 144,000, simply represents all those people who have obeyed the laws of God.Today the 144,000 represent Christians because we now live under the law of Christ.

There are two sections in Revelation that deal with the symbolic number 144,000. They arechapters 7:1-8 and 14:1-5. We will present a basic study of the number at this time, with a morethorough discussion to follow in lesson VII. In order to fully understand how this number is beingused, both chapters must be studied.

As this section is studied, keep in mind that the great multitude dressed in white robes thatcame out of great tribulation is another way of describing the 144,000.

Crossing the Red Sea(Chapters 2, 3, 20)

During the time of Egyptian bondage, the Israelites were looking for a way of escape. Theyneeded a leader and God sent them Moses. God appeared to Moses in the burning bush and told him togo unto Pharaoh so that he might deliver the children of Israel out of bondage. Passages in the NewTestament state that Moses was a likeness of Christ. See Acts 3:22. Moses led the people out ofphysical bondage in the likeness to Christ leading mankind out of spiritual bondage. In order for theIsraelites to escape physical tribulation, they had to cross the Red Sea. They were able to accomplishthis with the help of God. The crossing of the Red Sea was symbolic of a much greater spiritual eventto take place when Christ came to earth. It symbolized mankind's escape from great spiritual bondageby the blood of Christ. It is important to note that the color red is used many times to symbolizebloodshed. Therefore, the crossing of the Red Sea is symbolic of the crossing of the blood of Christ.We cross this Red Sea of the blood of Christ by our obedience to his gospel through baptism. See1Cor. 10:1-2. This is a spiritual resurrection from the grave of sin.

There are two major symbols used in Revelation to illustrate this resurrection from sin. Theyare the "First Resurrection" in chapter 20 and "Overcoming" in chapters 2 and 3. As this lesson isstudied, it is important to remember and compare the physical events surrounding the crossing of theRed Sea with events surrounding the spiritual crossing of the Red Sea of the blood of Christ.

First Resurrection(Chapter 20)

Before entering into this study, it is extremely important to understand exactly what the firstresurrection is. Jesus was the “first resurrection.” Col 1:18 states, “And he is the head of the body, thechurch: who is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead; that in all things he might have thepreeminence.” The question then becomes: How do we have a part in that “first resurrection?” Eph.2:1-7 should be studied thoroughly. It definitely shows us that our first resurrection is a spiritualresurrection from the grave of sin. Eph. 2:5 states, "Even when we were dead in sins, hath quickened ustogether with Christ." To be quickened is to be made alive or resurrected. Rom. 6:3-6 states,"Therefore we are buried with him by baptism into death: that like as Christ was raised up form thedead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life." We are resurrectedfrom the grave of sin to walk a new life in Christ Jesus. This is our “first resurrection.”

1000 Years

As was studied in the first lesson, the number 1000 represents completeness. Therefore the1000 years is symbolic of a complete period of time. Verse 6 states that those who have "part in thefirst resurrection" will live and reign with Christ during the 1000 years. Since the first resurrection isour resurrection from the spiritual grave of sin, then the 1000 years must represent that period of timein which people can be made alive. That is the Christian dispensation. This does not mean thateveryone will live for a literal 1000 years. It means that Christians are made alive and reign spirituallyduring the 1000 years. This period of time began on the day of Pentecost and will end with Christ’sSecond Coming. It is parallel to the 40 years of wilderness wanderings by the Israelites. 144,000 Gathered at Mount Zion(Chapter 14)

After the Israelites escaped Egyptian bondage by crossing the Red Sea, Moses led them into thewilderness to mount Sinai. On this mountain God gave Israel the Ten Commandments. This issymbolic of Christ leading mankind out of spiritual bondage and giving his law on spiritual mountZion. Moses was a likeness of Christ and mount Sinai is a physical likeness of spiritual mount Zion.Many Old Testament prophecies spoke of events to take place on mount Zion. For example, Zech. 8:1states, "Thus saith the Lord; I am returned unto Zion, and will dwell in the midst of Jerusalem: andJerusalem shall be called a city of truth; and the mountain of the Lord of hosts the holy mountain."This is a reference to the coming of God's spiritual kingdom - the church. In Micah 4:1, the church issymbolically described as the "mountain" of the house of the Lord. It was to come in the "last days." InI Jno. 2:18, this Christian dispensation is referred to as the "last days." Therefore the "mountain of thehouse of the Lord" was to come during this present dispensation. It came as spiritual mount Zion andtook the place of physical mount Sinai.

Examine the drawing once again and notice that it illustrates a perfect parallel between thephysical events of Israel and the spiritual events in the church. The visions about to be studied use thegreat parallel between mount Sinai and mount Zion. A prophecy is made in Micah 4:7 which states that"the Lord shall reign over them in mount Zion from henceforth, even for ever." The throne of God ison mount Zion. The literal throne of God may be in the heavenly realm, but spiritually the throne ofGod is located in the church. Matt. 18:20 says, "Where two or three are gathered together in my name,there am I in the midst of them." The church is the spiritual kingdom of God, and the Lord is sitting onhis throne as he rules that kingdom. The giving of the Law of Moses on physical mount Sinai issymbolic of Christ giving the gospel on spiritual mount Zion.

As this lesson is studied, keep in mind the description of the throne of God as is given inRevelation chapters 4 and 5. Please refer back to the earlier lesson in this workbook titled, “Throne ofGod.”

One other very important concept in this study is the parallel between the children of Israel andthe church. The children of Israel lived in a literal, physical kingdom upon this earth. They had theirown government and kings. The church today is a spiritual likeness of that physical kingdom. Wehave a spiritual law and government, and our King is Christ.

Just as a note: Some may question the two spellings of the mountain. It is simply a difference inspelling between the Hebrew and Greek translations. The Hebrew is "Zion" and the Greek is "Sion.”Study the drawing below of the parallel comparison of Israel and the church.

Church in the Wilderness(Chapter 12)

After the Israelites received the Ten Commandments on mount Sinai, they began their journeyto the Promised Land. Because of their unbelief, they were refused entrance into that land and began aperiod of forty years of wilderness wanderings. This forty-year period of wandering in the wildernessis a likeness to the situation of the church in the world today. As one becomes a member of the Lord'schurch by obeying the gospel, he leaves the bondage of sin by the blood of Christ. He then enters intothe spiritual kingdom of God where he dwells spiritually in this present world awaiting his PromisedLand of heaven.

Many of the events during the period of forty years of wanderings were symbolic types ofevents taking place today in the spiritual kingdom of God. The Israelites were nourished on literalmanna from heaven during this time. That literal manna was a likeness of the spiritual manna to come,which was Jesus and his Word. See Jno. 6:31-35. They struggled with their trust in God. Many diedbecause of unbelief. Today the church struggles against a world of sin. When people today leave thechurch and turn back to a world of sin, they are doing the same thing as the Israelites who turned fromGod in the wilderness. Many died in the wilderness because they forsook God for idols. Those whoforsake God today for the pleasures of sin will be punished eternally.

This forty years of wilderness wanderings corresponds to the symbolic 1000 years of chapter20, which was discussed in the lesson titled “Souls in Bondage – Great Tribulation.” The church willexist in this world for a complete period of time described as a symbolic 1000 years. In chapter 12, thissymbolic period of time is described as 1260 days, which is 3½ years. The number 3½ is used inRevelation to describe a period of waiting and longing. The church is waiting for the Second Comingof Jesus. The 1260 days is simply another way of describing the 1000 years. Study the drawings on thefollowing page and make comparisons concerning the time the children of Israel wandered in thewilderness to the time the church wanders in the wilderness of this world.

An important parallel to understand at this time is that the children of Israel were the chosenpeople of God under the Law of Moses and Christians are the chosen people of God under the Law ofChrist. The Law of Moses was given only to the nation of Israel, but the Law of Christ is given to allnations. When Christ came to earth the first time, he gave a much better law (Heb. 8:13). War in Heaven(12:7-17)

As we study this section, it is important to understand that the war in heaven is a symbolicdescription of how Christ defeated Satan when he died on the cross for the sins of man. Christovercame Satan when he died on the cross, and we overcome sin when we obey the gospel. 1 John 5:5says, “Who is he tht overcometh the world, but he that believeth that Jesus is the Son of God?”Speaking of false spirits, 1 John 4:4 states, “Ye are of God, little children, and have overcome them:because greater is he that is in you, than he that is in the world.” As people obey the gospel, they crossthe Red Sea of the blood of Christ. See earlier lesson, “Crossing the Red Sea.” As they do this, theyovercome this world of sin. This means that our sins have been forgiven. Christ has won the waragainst Satan by his death on the cross, and we can win the war against sin in our lives by obeying thegospel of Christ. Notice how this is in perfect agreement with the lesson on “Overcoming.”

Chapter 12 should be divided into two sections: (1) verses 1 – 6, and (2) verses 7 – 17. Both ofthese sections cover the same period of time – the entire gospel age. In the first section, Christ ispictured as coming to the earth and Satan is waiting to destroy him. He then ascends to the throne ofGod and the church flees into the wilderness where she is nourished by God. In the second section,Christ is pictured as defeating Satan by his death on the cross. The church then flees into thewilderness where she is persecuted by Satan but also nourished by God. Both of these visions cover thegospel age, but each gives us a look at different events, which take place during that period of time.

The key verse in understanding this section is 12:10. It confirms the time period in which thiswar was won.

Seven Seals(6:1-17; 81-5)

As we study this series of seen seals, it will become evident that the symbolism used in thisvision is different from that of the previous visions studied. One important concept to understand ishow these series are structured and how they relate to each other. The structure of the Seals, Trumpetsand Plagues all parallel the creation. God created all things in 6 days and rested on the seventh. Thefirst 6 events in each of these series give us a look at events that will take place on the earth during theChristian age. The seventh then describes events that will take place in eternity.

In this lesson and the lesson to follow, numbers become very important symbols. The number 7is especially important. As was discussed in the first lesson, seven symbolically represents divinecompleteness. Therefore, the seven Seals, seven Trumpets, and seven last Plagues all give us a look atthe entire, complete gospel age. The seventh event in each of these series takes us into eternity. At thistime all things of this earth will be finished and the dead will be judged. Those who have obeyed theteachings of God will enter into eternal rest, but those who have opposed God will enter into eternalpunishment. This is easily understood from chapter 10:6-7, which states that when the 7 th Trumpetsounds, time shall be no more. These three series of events are each parallel from the standpoint ofcovering the same period of time – the entire gospel age.

The series of seven seals can be divided into two distinct divisions. The first section is the four horsemen, which explains events that happen on this earth dealing with the physical lives of men. The last three seals explain how God will deal with those who have opposed him on this earth and have persecuted Christians.

The seals describe events that are to take place on the earth during the Christian age and affectthe physical lives of men. They explain physical events that Christians must face and endure in this lifeto remain faithful to God. The timeline below should help in understanding the time period covered bythe Seals, Trumpets and Plagues.

Before studying the three series of Seals,Trumpets and Plagues, it is very important tounderstand how they are structured and how theyrelate to each other. It is also important tounderstand the type of symbolism being used.These three series describe events that take placeduring this Christian dispensation. They parallelthe way God created the earth. He created allthings in six days and rested on the seventh. Thesefirst six events in each series describe events whichtake place on the earth with the sixth taking us tothe end of time. Notice how in each of these series,the sixth event uses language which describe theend of time or the second coming of Christ. Theseventh event then describes Judgment. Each ofthese series close by using words such as voices,lightnings, thunderings and earthquake. Theseterms are used in scripture to announce greatevents or the presence of God.

Study the parallels shown on these pages andnotice how they are identical in structure. Oncethis structure is understood, information given inone of the series can be used to understand theothers.

Seven Trumpets(8:2; 8:7-9:21)

The second series of seven events is the seven trumpets. It should be noted that the seventrumpets follow the same sequence as the seven seals. The difference is that for the most part the seventrumpets deal mainly with the spiritual lives of mankind. This section is of tremendous importance tothe spiritual lives of Christians. The 7 Seals explained that there would be many threats upon thephysical lives of Christ, which we would have to endure. The 7 Trumpets warn of great problems onthe earth that affect the spiritual lives of men.

The symbols that separate the meanings of the seals and the trumpets are the fractions 1/4 and1/3. The 7 Seals deal with the 1/4th (physical) part of man, but the series of 7 Trumpets deals with the1\3rd (spiritual) part of man. The seven trumpets follow the same 4 - 3 sequence as was evident in theseries of seven seals. The first four Trumpets explain events on this earth that will affect the spirituallives of men. The last three Trumpets show how God will deal with those who have opposed hisspiritual teachings and have caused men to lose their spiritual lives. The seventh Trumpet explains howGod will deal with those people in eternity who have opposed his spiritual law.

Seven Last Plagues(15:1-16:21)

There is much Old Testament symbolism involved in the study of the Seven Last Plagues. Aswe think back to the time of the deliverance of the children of Israel from Egyptian bondage, we arereminded of the ten plagues sent against Egypt. To properly understand these last plagues, we mustremember the great parallels between the physical events of the Old Testament and the spiritual eventsof the New Testament. The plagues sent against Egypt were literal, physical happenings. The sevenlast plagues are spiritual plagues sent against a world in sin. Just as the ten plagues were sent againstEgypt in order to cause Pharaoh to let the people go, the Seven Last Plagues are spiritual plagues sentagainst a world in sin to encourage them to become a part of God's spiritual kingdom. They are eventsthat will be directed against those who oppose God. Having these plagues directed against themshould be an incentive to turn to the ways of God. It should also be an incentive to Christians to remainfaithful.

These plagues are called the "last" plagues because they took place in the "last" times. Sincethe "last times" refer to the Christian dispensation, these Seven Last Plagues are taking place in theworld today. They take place continually throughout the Christian dispensation and give us a glimpseof what things will be like at the Second Coming of Christ. The seventh plague also describes thespiritual destruction that those who have opposed God will suffer during eternity. History of the Church(Chapter 11)

This section of Revelation should be of great interest to Christians today. It gives an account ofthe major events concerning the church from its establishment to eternity. Two thousand years havepassed since the establishment of the church. This enables us to look back at history and readily seethat many of the events described in this chapter have already taken place. Others are yet to befulfilled. Since many have been fulfilled, we should strongly believe that the events described, whichare yet in the future, will most surely come to pass.

Two Witnesses

As we begin the study of the history of the church, it is very important to understand themeaning of the "two witnesses." In order to properly interpret the symbolic meaning of the twowitnesses, we must first look at the other names by which they are called. They are also called: (1)Two olive trees; (2) two candlesticks; and (3) two prophets. Each of these symbolic terms refers toChristians or the church in some way. Consider the following passages concerning these symbols.

Olive tree - Rom. 11:17-24 - In this passage the old nation of Israel is compared to the natural olivetree and the Gentile nations which have become Christians are compared to a wild olivetree. The wild olive tree has been grafted into the natural olive tree. So, the olive tree is asymbol used to represent the people of God.

Candlesticks - Rev. 1:20 - The candlestick is definitely used as a symbol of the church because it isplainly stated that the seven candlesticks represent the seven churches. Also, in Rev.1:13, Jesus is pictured as standing in the midst of the seven candlesticks. This shows thathe is standing in the midst of the church today. The candlestick is a symbol used todescribe the church.

Two Prophets - Rev. 10:11 - In this passage, the apostle John is told that he must once again prophesybefore many peoples and nations. Obviously, John prophesied by the writings in thebook of Revelation. We certainly do not have the ability to prophesy today, but we doproclaim the word of God and are capable of knowing what the end will be for thosewho do not obey the word. In that sense we are the prophets of God today.

Two Witnesses - Today in the church we are very apprehensive of the word "witness." We areobviously not eyewitnesses to the crucifixion or the life of Christ, but we are witnessesfrom the standpoint of the world seeing Christ in us. The only way the world may learnand know about Jesus is by reading the word or hearing it proclaimed by Christians.Matt. 24:14 says, “And this gospel of the kingdom shall be preached in all the world fora witness unto all nations.” We must call things by Bible names, but we must also

understand that the “two witnesses” in this passage are describing ways that the worldmay hear and know about Christ.

It now becomes important to understand why the number two is associated withthe witnesses, olive trees, candlesticks, and prophets. As was studied in the first lesson,the number two carries with it the symbolic meaning of strength. Christ sent his disciplesout in pairs. They gained strength from each other. Since the number two is associatedwith the witnesses, candlesticks, olive trees and prophets, we know that their strength isbeing described. Sometimes we forget the power we have as Christians. We have thegreatest power of all in our possession and that is the Word of God. Rom 1:16 says thatthe gospel is the power of God unto salvation.

The Beasts(Chapters 13 and 17)

There is a tremendous amount ofcontroversy in the religious world todaysurrounding the meanings of these beasts. Asthis section is studied, we must constantlystrive to let the Bible determine its ownmeanings. If this is done, the best authoritypossible for the interpretations of these visionsis being used.

In this lesson there are two beastswhich will be studied; (1) The Beast out of theSea (13:1-10), and (2) the Beast out of theEarth (13:11-18). The meanings of these twobeasts are different; yet they are closelyrelated because both are called "Beasts." Themain features of the “Beast Out of the Sea”are that it has seven heads and ten horns, but the main feature of the “Beast out of the Earth” is that ithas two horns. Actually, the beast out of the earth represents a closer look at the seventh head of thebeast out of the sea. It gives us more detailed information concerning the last head of the beast out ofthe sea. It now becomes our responsibility to determine the Biblical meaning of a "Beast" and applythat meaning to these visions in Revelation.

The Biblical meaning of a "beast" can be derived from the seventh chapter of Daniel. In thischapter, Daniel sees a vision of four beasts, which are to rise to power in this world from the time ofDaniel until Christ. There can be very little doubt that these four beasts represent the governmentalpowers of Babylon, Assyria, Greece, and Rome. From this it can be determined that a beast representsthe governmental powers which have ruled in this world. The meaning of a beast can also be derived inanother manner as shown by the questions in the first section of this lesson. When the same meaningcan be derived from two different lines of reasoning, then the definition must have merit.
