Let us rejoice and be glad and give the glory to Him, for the marriage of the Lamb has come and His bride has made herself ready.’ It was given to her to clothe herself in fine linen bright and clean; for the fine linen is the righteous acts of the saints. Then he said to me,

‘Write, Blessed are those who are invited to the marriage supper of the Lamb.’ And he said to me, ‘These are true words of God.’ Then I fell at His feet to worship him. But he said to me, ‘Do not do that; I am a fellow servant of yours and your brethren who held the testimony of Jesus;Worship God…’”

Worship

“Proskuneo”

“to kiss the hand to (toward) one, in token of reverence” (Thayer’s Greek-English Lexicon of the NT, 548)

“to make obeisance, do reverence to” (Vine’s Expository Dictionary of NT Words, 1258)

Suggests an action being performed indicative of the worshiper’s reverence for the one being worshiped. It generally reflects the attitude of the worshipper rather than the act performed.

Worship

comes from the heart!

The Pharisee stood and was praying this to himself: 'God, I thank You that I am not like other people: swindlers, unjust, adulterers, or even like this tax collector. I fast twice a week; I pay tithes of all that I get.' But the tax collector, standing some distance away, was even unwilling to lift up his eyes to heaven, but was beating his breast, saying, 'God, be merciful to me, the sinner!‘”

“I just don’t get anything out of the assembly”

Reverence and awe indicates

something about ourselves – a

recognition of our unworthiness and the greatness of

God.

Too many possess an

attitude towards God that is too casual for

proper worship

What Kind of Worship Is Offered to God?

Superficial Worship:

outward, ritualistic, without sincerity – just

going through the motions

Micah 6:1-3“Hear now what the LORD is saying, ‘Arise, plead your case before the mountains, and let the hills hear your voice. Listen, you mountains, to the indictment of the LORD, and you enduring foundations of the earth, because the LORD has a case against His people even with Israel He will dispute. My people, what have I done to you, and how have I wearied you? Answer Me.”

“With what shall I come to the LORD and bow myself before the God on high? Shall I come to Him with burnt offerings, with yearling calves? Does the LORD take delight in thousands of rams, in ten thousand rivers of oil?

Shall I present my firstborn for my rebellious acts, the fruit of my body for the sin of my soul? He has told you, O man, what is good; and what does the LORD require of you but to do justice, to love kindness, and to walk humbly with your God?”

“This people honors Me

with their lips,

but their heart is

far away from Me.”

Apathetic WorshipHere out of a sense of

duty; habit; to avoid being asked, “Where were you Sunday?” Worship holds neither blessings or thrills –

it’s just routine

“I was glad when they said to me, let us go to the house of

the Lord.”

Second Hand Worship

Giving God whatever kind of worship we “feel”

like giving Him

“A son honors his father, and a servant his master. Then if I am a Father, where is My honor? And if I am a Master, where is My respect?' says the LORD of hosts….But you say, 'How have we despised Your name?' You are presenting defiled food upon My altar. But you say, 'How have we defiled You?' In that you say, 'The table of the LORD is to be despised.’ But when you present the blind for sacrifice, is it not evil?

“. . .Why not offer it to your governor? Would he be pleased with you? Or would he receive you kindly? With such an offering on your part, will He receive any of you kindly?’…Oh that there were one among you who would shut the gates, that you might not uselessly kindle fire on My altar! I am not pleased with you…nor will I accept an offering from you”.

(Malachi 1:6-10)

Irreverent Worship

Psalm 27:4

“One thing I have asked from the LORD, that I shall seek, that I may dwell in the house of the LORD all the days of my life, to behold the beauty of the LORD and to meditate in His temple.”

“…who is this uncircumcised Philistine, that he should taunt the armies of the living God?"

“Then David said to the Philistine, ‘You come to me with a sword, a spear, and a javelin, but I come to you in the name of the LORD of hosts, the God of the armies of Israel, whom you have taunted. This day the LORD will deliver you up into my hands,

and I will strike you down and remove your head from you. And I will give the dead bodies of the army of the Philistines this day to the birds of the sky and the wild beasts of the earth, that all the earth may know that there is a God in Israel, and that all this assembly may know that the LORD does not deliver by sword or by spear; for the battle is the LORD'S and He will give you into our hands.’" (1 Samuel 17:26, 45-47)

Hated Worship“What are your multiplied sacrifices to Me? says the LORD. I have had enough of burnt offerings of ram and the fat of fed cattle; and I take no pleasure in the blood of bulls, lambs or goats. When you come to appear before Me, who requires of you this trampling of My courts? Bring your worthless offerings no longer, incense is an abomination to Me, new moon

and Sabbath, the calling of assemblies--I cannot endure iniquity and the solemn assembly. I hate your new moon festivals and your appointed feasts, they have become a burden to Me; I am weary of bearing them. So when you spread out your hands in prayer, I will hide My eyes from you; yes, even though you multiply prayers, I will not listen.”
