Pedestrian movement to and from the heart of the city to the Bus Terminus via Queen’s Park, Constitution River Rd and Constitution Rd.

The West wall acts as not only a climatic but a structural element within the building as steel members are fastened to it.

The Barbados National Naval and Maritime Museum is intended to integrate the constant movement on land and sea in this area, with knowledge and education provided by the museum. Educational and civic institutions surround the site to the North and East, with an active Bus Terminus to the South and the hub of the city to the West. As a result, many pass through the site, and to facilitate this nucleus of pedestrian activity, a courtyard and cafe were added to act as a punctuation in the path and a meeting place for the public. To create a stronger connection to the water a ‘bridge’ was created along the Western boundary, this would not only act as a connector to the North and South streets but to the market across the river. This would promote more commerce to the area, as well as a visual connection to the public spaces increasing awareness and interest.

Display Unit : Museum02BARBADOS NATIONAL NAVAL AND MARITIME MUSEUMThe display unit designed for the Barbados Naval and Maritime Museum was representative of a ships hull and the iron bilboe (shackle), both used to transport West Africans to the Caribbean. The unit is to allow the viewer to actively engage with the artefact through the glass casing, gaining an understanding of the cruelty associated with the slave trade.

Relief Housing: Shelter03LONGVILLE SITE DEVELOPMENTNatural Disasters, and particularly hurricanes affect the region with water and wind. This shelter is an easily transportable unit, as well as quick to assemble. The geodesic dome has a rigid structure and was originally constructed to be a combination of half domes. However, the idea of a footing system was explored to utilise the lower half for storage as well as keep the structure off the ground to decrease the chance of water damage and unstable terrain.

Final idea was an exploration to modify the footing and maintain full dome

UNIT PLAN

Sketches of scheme in a soft medium (oil pastels and recycled paper) examining the spatial arrangement in section and then plan. Ideas of movement and hierarchy were explored to create a sense of monumentality to promote expression.

Performing Arts Center: UTECH04UNIVERSITY OF TECHNOLOGY, JAMAICA

The University of Technology, Jamaica is centered around the ideology that students be provided with technological knowledge of their profession. However, the University has not been able to afford a facility to assist in the training of entertainers, an area that has a strong cultural impact and one that many want to pursue. The Performing Arts Centre is to integrate the indoor and outdoor experience of the tropics, to create an environment to not only house performances, but motivate the expression of each career path. The monumentality of the forms is an expression of rhythm and movement, and mimics the form of the dominating silos, without overpowering their presence.

The Trident Main Bar was the first project I was assigned at Atelier-Vidal Limited. As a crucial place in the Central Facility, the space had to leave an impression on the patrons.

The concept was based on a continuum of time and the elements surrounding the area metaphorically and physically. The slats on the front face of the bar was an element the architect wanted to incorporate for the finish as well as a ‘cloud’. I then decided to have these elements continue along the wall and then onto the ceiling to make it feel more intimate and with the Prouve Light fixtures added, get that cloud effect.

The wooden slats on the bar and wall were done in a panelling system to allow for easy transport and mounting. While the element on the ceiling had the slats fastened to a 1/4 “ thk. aluminium member and suspended from the rafters at equal spacing, but varied heights to create the wave.

The Beach Bar Shelving concept is based on the ocean, as it is a bar that overlooks the sea. Not only does the backlit backing have a wave shape, but so do the shelves as seen in plan. The back panels support the shelves, and are made out of marine ply and finished in white laquer.

One Gold Street, is a seven storey proposal for an office along Downtown, Kingston’s wa-terfront. The exoskeletal structure supports the floors and is fixed to the perforated thermal wall along the West.

This handmade physical model was made out of bass wood, and the thermal walls made of several layers of cut paper.

The Flynn Residence located in Portland, Ja-maica, is a scenic site facing the North coast of the island. Originally the design was based on a case study house in the 1960s.

This study model made of chipboard is meant to show the existing site before the renovations take place.
