A New Love

I n the musical, Fiddler on the Roof, Tevye and Golde are struggling to keep their balance in a fast-changing world. Their daughter Hodel has rejected the husband that they have arranged for her and has chosen a husband for herself whom she loves. The husband that she has chosen for herself is poor and

doesn’t possess the material goods and security that the husband that was arranged for her possesses. In marrying for love, there will certainly be struggles and suffering in her future. Hodel chooses to suffer for love. Tevye realizes that the world that he has known, a world full of well-tried traditions is changing and he and Golde will have to embrace new ways of living. Tevye tells Golde, “It’s a new world… A new world. Love.” A world in which love sets the standard of living is unfamiliar to Tevye. He shocks Golde with a surprising question: “Golde… do you love me?” The question seems foolish and silly to Golde. After all that they have been through together, how can Tevye ask such a question? Does love really matter? Don’t we just understand one another? When life is filled with suffering and painful struggles, love seems superfluous, like a silly affectation. And yet, to know that we are loved is a place that we can find rest from our struggles and know peace. In the gospel of John, Jesus, the Risen Christ, puts the question of love before Peter. He asks him: “Simon, son of John, do you love me more than these?” (Jn 21,15) Do you love me? The love that Jesus is asking Peter about is a love that is “more”, more than the things of this world, more than life itself. It is an eternal love. Peter pushes aside Jesus’ question by claiming familiarity: “Yes Lord, you know that I love you.” Peter is right. Jesus does know. Jesus knows the secret depths of the heart. Yet, that doesn’t answer his question and it is not enough. With the resurrection of Jesus, a new world has begun, a new covenant has been established in the blood of Jesus, and the new covenant has a new law and that law is expressed simply by Jesus at the Last Supper, the First Eucharist: “I give you a new commandment: love one another. As I have loved you, so you also should love one another.” (Jn 13,34) A little later Jesus will say to his disciples: “As the Father loves me, so I also love you. Remain in my love. If you keep my commandments, you will remain in my love, just as I have kept my Father’s commandments and remain in his love.” (Jn 15,9f) He follows that with: “It was not you who chose me, but I who chose you and appointed you to go and bear fruit that will remain, so that whatever you ask the Father in my name he may give you. This I command you: love one another.” (Jn 15,16f) Love is not just a feeling or warmth of the heart, it is a commandment that makes demands upon us to give our lives in service and sacrifice for the good of the other. Peter is frustrated and distressed that Jesus asks him three times if he loves him. Peter says, “Lord, you know everything, you know that I love you.” (Jn 21,17) Jesus is asking “something more” from Peter’s love than an understanding or a non-verbal acknowledgement. Jesus is challenging Peter to take up a new life and to leave behind the old way of life that only resulted in “empty nets.” Jesus is calling Peter to a fruitful love. The resurrection of Jesus and his entrance into the glory of the Father calls for a new way of life, a new way of love. Jesus calls Peter to follow him into this new life of love and to be the shepherd that he is meant to be. As the good shepherd, Peter must love the sheep that are entrusted to him and be willing to lay down his life for the sheep in the manner of Jesus. When Jesus asks the question, “Do you love me?”, what is your response? Most of the time we are like Peter and just say to the Lord, “Yes Lord, you know that I love you.” After all, we go to church on Sunday, we give our little tithe, we say our prayers and we try to do nice things for others. Isn’t that enough? What more do you want? Jesus says simply, “More.” Jesus wants more from us. He wants us to truly live our faith in the new covenant of love that is sealed in the blood of Christ. He wants us to offer fully and joyfully, our worship in the Eucharist. Celebrate new love. As the Father loves Jesus, so Jesus loves us and so are we to love one another with a faith-filled, fruitful love. Become the love that we have received. It is a new world. Love.

GOD’S OVERFLOWING KINDNESS The superabundance of God’s kindness es all of today’s readings together. Especially when life overwhelms us, the Lord provides all we need, and then some. In the Acts of the Apostles, Peter takes the lead when facing the Sanhedrin. We might expect the man who denied Jesus to crumble under the imposing glare of the high priest. In-stead, the Holy Spirit helps him tes fy to his faith in Jesus Christ. What Peter had lacked before, courage and convic on, God provides in abundance. Similarly, today’s Gospel shows Jesus providing a surplus of fish for the disciples. They have no luck fishing un l the Lord intercedes. Jesus supplies an almost ridiculous number of fish, and he cooks it for them, too. As our reading from Revela on affirms, the overflowing riches of God require constant praise. Countless creatures—“everything in the universe”—cry out to honor the Lord, forever and ever. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co

STEWARDSHIP Stewardship Love

“...Peter was distressed that Jesus had said to him a third me.

‘Do you love me?’ and he said to him, ‘Lord you know everything; you know that I love you.’ Jesus said to him, ‘Feed my

sheep.’” (john 21:17) How o en do you actually say the words “I love you” to Jesus, to family members, or to friends? We are made to be in rela onship with God and each other. Sincerely telling someone that you love them is the best gi you can give them because it comes from your heart. You are giving them the gi of yourself. We all crave love. Live your Stewardship by telling someone you love them every day. April 16th & 17th April 23rd & 24 Offering $ 27,144 $ 12,252. Online $ 11,487 $ 6,395. TOTAL $ 38,631 $18,748. RELIGIOUS EDUCATION CLASSES COME TO A CLOSE

Today and tomorrow are the last days of religious educa on classes for children here at the parish. We will end with a May crowning, a Marian video and snack. I wish to thank our faithful catechists and aides who so generously give their me each week to spread the good news to a new genera on of Catholics. I also want to encourage all parents of children from Pre-K through 5th grade to register their children for these classes when enrollment starts in July. When we bap ze our children, we commit to educa ng them in the faith and if they are not in Catholic school, they should be in religious educa on classes. If children go to a Chris an school, they should also a end religious educa on classes to remain grounded as Catholics in our faith. Children are warmly welcomed and nurtured by loving adults and teens of deep faith and almost all our catechists are cer fied by the Diocese of San Diego.

Tr_[sur_s from our Tr[^itions The Gospel today sees Peter and his col-leagues a er the Resurrec on, returning to Galilee and resuming the family business. They are fishing by night. Although it is true that fish feed by night, the men on of darkness here is more about the human spirit than it is about fishing advice. Modern life keeps darkness effec vely under control; much of the world has been glowing radiantly through the night for a century. Yet just as surely as the Risen Christ breaks into Peter’s fishing, so does he break into the usual pa erns of our own darkness, electric lights notwithstanding. It is Easter, and we are the people of the light. In our tradi on, Evening Prayer, celebrated in monaster-ies, parishes, cathedrals, and homes everywhere, is a kind of solemn protest against the darkness and its claims, an act of praise for our light-bearing God, and a commitment to carrying that light forward. Sunset is a turning point of our day, felt less acutely in an electrified world, but s ll an effec ve reminder that one day darkness overtakes us all. Yet our Eastering has taught us in a hundred ways that the victory belongs to the Bearer of Light. Easter summons us to transform our everyday “blackouts,” perhaps in a way as simple as a whispered prayer of thanks at evening for the blessings of the day.

St. Elizabeth Seton

We are all in different stages of life. Married, single, perhaps widowed like Mother Seton. You may have small children or grown children. Your primary familial bonds

may be with elderly parents. Whatever the case, you have the opportunity to love and serve your family. Your ac ons can both be guided by prayer and become a prayer. Offer everything you do for your family to God, and He will give

you His Grace. Sadly, as St Elizabeth Seton experienced, family o en incur

our deepest wounds. Loving our family can be very difficult. And, some mes, we too have to learn that some-

mes that means wai ng for me and grace to heal wounds and mend rela onships in God’s

me. Make serving your family a prayer.

Thank You!

To The Woman’s Auxiliary, to the community of parishioner’s at St Elizabeth Seton, to the Knights of Columbus, and to Father Michael, where do I begin to thank you all for the out poring of love for my beau ful wife Lyn? Their was never a ques on about can we help, you just did it. Lyn loved God, her church and church community and her family. You are the community of God stepping up to do what is needed. From the making of deserts, the se ng and decora ng the tables, the serving of food and all the details that needed to be done. You did it. I can’t believe the amount of love for her with cards and masses to be said for her. When you are close to something or someone its hard to see the big picture, and you need to step back and get a different view. And you all were in that picture. I would hear of things in bits and pieces and didn’t put it together ll I read ALL the cards. Hundreds! So from the bo om of my heart a big GOD’S BLESSING and thank you and to the Church of St. Elizabeth Seton.

Thank God for you all. We are some community of God!
