An Intentional Encounter – With A Purpose Is 60:1-6; Ps 72:1-2, 7-8, 10-11, 12-13; Eph 3:2-3a, 5-6; Mt 2:1-12

The Gospels are filled with stories about people who wanted to see Jesus. Many of them wanted something from Him – usually a healing and restoration to the community. Some were intrigued by His words and wanted to hear more. Some wanted Him to perform miracles or signs for Him – as if He were the entertainment of the day. Against this background, the Magi stand out as something completely different. First, they were not Jewish and no connection to the faith of Jesus and did not know the God He was preaching. Second, they came to Him before He uttered a single word or performed a single miracle. He was yet an infant and everything He would later do was merely a distant promise. But it was a promise that these strangers from a different land believed would be fulfilled. Finally, they did not come to be entertained or to just “see” an interesting site. They came from a distant land to adore and to worship that which neither they, nor anyone in the world at that time, really understood. We do not need to journey across vast deserts, guided only by a star. We have the Lord in our Church at Mass and at Adoration. He is calling us to come and worship Him. We may not have a clear idea of why we are worshiping Christ in the Consecrated Host. And perhaps we struggle in our hearts with the idea that the Eucharist is the Real Presence of our Lord. That is okay. I doubt that the magi had any clear idea of what they were going to worship when they set out on their journey. But they did set out and let themselves be guided by God. They encountered Christ, and their lives were changed. We too have the opportunity to encounter the Lord. Start with Eucharistic Adoration as your resolution for the New Year. Go on pilgrimage to your own church and visit the Lord during Adoration to worship Him. Talk with Him and open your heart to hear Him talk to you. You can be the Magi this year. Go to worship the Lord and come away changed by the encounter.

Epiphany, one of the oldest Christian feasts - also known as Theophany in the East, is a feast day within the Church’s liturgical celebration of Christmas. Like Christmas, the date chosen for Epiphany has no firm historical or scriptural grounding. The date of Epiphany traditionally was chosen to be on January 6, the 12th day after Christmas; however, in most countries, including the United States, the celebration of Epiphany is transferred to the Sunday that falls between January 2 and January 8 (inclusive). Greece, Ireland, Italy, and Poland continue to observe Epiphany on January 6, as do some dioceses in Germany. There are many traditions and customs around the world associated with Epiphany. One tradition involves blessing chalk, that is used to mark the doorways of homes with the number of the year and the initials of the traditional names of the Three Kings: Cas-par, Melchior, and Balthasar. So, for this year as an example, we would mark on the doors: 20 + C + M + B + 22 or 2022 CMB. In older traditional Latin Missal, and in the same rite still used in Byzantine Catholic Church, was a very lengthy prayer for the bless-ing of holy water on the Eve of Epiphany. A custom, not so much liturgical but touching, is the Italian tradition of the “Befana” - a gift giving tradition that typically includes the figurine of an “Old Lady,” named Befana. Her name may be cognate of the word “Epiphania.” Early Christians celebrated Epiphany before they began to observe Christmas. The first celebrations of Epiphany occurred in sec-ond-century Egypt. Over time, the celebrations took on many traditions, progressed from the East to the West, onward to the fourth century in which by that time most Western Christians had also adopted. Early Christian liturgy celebrated Epiphany the revelation of the divinity identified with four instances in which Jesus’ divine nature manifested: at his birth, at the adoration of the Magi, at his baptism, and at the wedding feast in Cana. Although eventually the Eastern churches chose to celebrate the feast on the baptism of Jesus while the Western churches chose to continue to associate the feast with the visit of Magi, both traditions in common celebrate the revelation of the Holy Trinity. The celebrations on our liturgical calendar of the Roman Catholic Rite and the associated Gospel passage for each Sunday start-ing from the Epiphany and two Sundays thereafter mirror the last three themes the early Christians chose for their Epiphany cele-bration: the visit of the Magi, the Baptism of Jesus, and the wedding feast in Cana. Although in practice we celebrate Epiphany only in one week, let’s take a look at all the Gospel texts associated with the three consecutive Sundays and reflect on the deeper theme of Epiphany in light of early Christian tradition and theological perspective. All these three readings are an integral part of what we may consider, “an extended celebration of Epiphany,” the crowing feast of Christmas – the Epiphany Mystery and the full revelation of all that the light of Christmas contains. The Epiphany Sunday’s Gospel passage from Matthew 2:1-12 recalls the manifestation of Jesus in his divine person to the Gen-tiles. It describes the manifestation of Jesus’s divinity to the Magi. They came from the ends of the earth and thus symbolize for all time the genuine seekers of truth. The manifestation of Jesus in his divinity to the Gentiles in the persons of the magi is sup-plemented by the two other events that are manifestations of Jesus’ divine nature from a later period in his life. The liturgy is pri-marily a parable of what grace is doing now. It brings out the sublime significance of what is being transmitted in an invisible way through the visible signs. The next two Sundays we celebrate Jesus’ Baptism in the Jordan and the wedding feast of Cana that have been integrated into the liturgical calendar as part of the Ordinary Time in order to enlarge the perspective from which we perceive the divinity of Je-sus. The second Sunday’s Gospel reading, from Luke 3:15-16, 21-22, recalls the manifestation of Jesus in his divine person to the Jews at the river Jordan, the moment when Jesus entered fully into his mission for the salvation of the human family. The last Sunday’s Gospel, from John 2:1-11, recalls the manifestation of Jesus in his divine Person to his disciples at the wedding feast in Cana. Epiphany also celebrates the marriage, so to speak, between the Church and Christ; we, of course, are the Church. Hence the wedding feast is a symbol of the celebration of the divine nuptials in the souls of those who have experienced the di-vine light, and the divine life and love what that light contains. The new wine is the transcendent principle that Christ has brought into the world by taking human nature into himself, the message of the Gospel – the message that announces that this process is happening: the human family has become divine. The three historical events singled out by the liturgy of the “extended Epiphany” in three consecutive Sundays express this move-ment of incorporation into Christ and the transformation of consciousness. They are invitations that depend, of course, on our consent and full participation in the liturgy. As we celebrate Epiphany today, keep in mind that the divine love is the light that is revealed at first to the Magi, and also has been to us. The gifts of the Magi, symbolized the inner treasures of the Christ, are also opened up. All these gifts are ours, right now, in the Eucharistic liturgy. Let’s contemplate on these gifts and reflect on the prayers in the Mass today: The Prayer of Offerings: “Look with favor, Lord, we pray, on these gifts of your Church, in which are offered now not gold or frankincense or myrrh, but he who by them is proclaimed, sacrificed and received, Jesus Christ. Who lives and reigns for ever and ever.” And, the Prayer after Communion: “Go before us with heavenly light, O Lord, always and everywhere, that we may perceive with clear sight and revere with true affection the mystery in which you have willed us to participate. Through Christ our Lord.”

Un encuentro intencional: Con un propósito

Fiesta de la Epifanía es 60:1-6; Sal 72:1-2, 7-8, 10-11, 12-13; EF 3:2-3a, 5-

6; Mt 2:1-12 Los Evangelios están llenos de historias sobre personas que querían ver a Jesús. Muchos de ellos querían algo de Él, generalmente una sanación y restauración de la comunidad. Algunos estaban intrigados por Sus palabras y querían escuchar más. Algunos querían que él hiciera milagros o señales para ellos, como si fuera el entretenimiento del día. En este contexto, los Reyes Magos destacan como algo completamente diferente. Primero, no eran judíos y no tenían conexión con la fe de Jesús y no conocían al Dios que estaba predicando.

Segundo, vinieron a Él antes de que Él pronunciara una sola palabra o realizara un solo milagro. Todavía era un bebé y todo lo que haría más tarde era simplemente una promesa lejana. Pero era una promesa que estos extraños de una tierra diferente creían que se cumpliría. Finalmente, no vinieron a entretenerse o simplemente a "ver" un sitio interesante. Vinieron de una tierra lejana para adorar y adorar lo que ni ellos, ni nadie en el mundo en ese momento, realmente entendían. No necesitamos viajar a través de vastos desiertos, guiados solo por una estrella. Tenemos al Señor en nuestra Iglesia en la Misa y en la Adoración. Él nos está llamando a venir y adorarlo. Ve en peregrinación a tu propia iglesia y visita al Señor durante la Adoración para adorarlo. Habla con Él y abre tu corazón para escucharlo hablar contigo. Puedes ser los Reyes Magos este año. Ve a adorar al Señor y sal cambiado por el encuentro.

La Epifanía, también conocida como Teofanía en el Este, es un día de fiesta dentro de la celebración litúrgica de Navidad de la Igle-sia. Al igual que la Navidad, la fecha elegida para la Epifanía no tiene una firme base histórica o bíblica. La fecha de la Epifanía, una de las fiestas cristianas más antiguas, es el 6 de enero,12 día después de la Navidad. Sin embargo, en la mayoría de los países, incluidos los Estados Unidos, la celebración de la Epifanía se transfiere al domingo que cae entre el 2 de enero y el 8 de enero (inclusive). Grecia, Irlanda, Italia y Polonia continúan observando la Epifanía el 6 de enero, al igual que algunas diócesis en Alema-nia. El vino nuevo es el principio trascendente que Cristo ha traído al mundo al tomar la naturaleza humana en sí mismo, el mensaje del Evangelio, el mensaje que anuncia que este proceso está sucediendo: la familia humana se ha vuelto divina. Los tres eventos históricos señalados por la liturgia de la Epifanía extendida en tres domingos consecutivos expresan este movimien-to de incorporación a Cristo y la transformación de la conciencia. Son invitaciones que dependen, por supuesto, de nuestro consenti-miento y de la plena participación en la liturgia. Al celebrar hoy, tenga en cuenta que el amor divino es la luz que se revela al princi-pio a los Reyes Magos, y también lo ha sido para nosotros. Los dones de los Reyes Magos simbolizan los tesoros internos del Cris-to, también se abren. Todos estos dones son nuestros, ahora mismo, en la liturgia eucarística. Reflexionemos sobre este regalo en la celebración de la Epifanía de hoy y contemplemos: La Oración de las Ofrendas: "Mira con favor, Señor, oramos, sobre estos dones de tu Iglesia, en los que ahora no se ofrecen oro ni incienso ni mirra, sino aquel que por ellos es proclamado, sacrificado y recibido, Jesucristo. Y, la Oración después de la Comunión: "Ve delante de nosotros con luz celestial, oh Señor, siempre y en todas partes, para que po-damos percibir con claridad de vista y venerar con verdadero afecto el misterio en el que has querido que participemos. Por Cristo nuestro Señor".

Mt 2:1-12 Các Phúc Âm chứa đựng nhiều câu chuyện về những người muốn gặp Chúa Giêsu. Nhiều người mong chờ một điều gì từ Ngài-thường là sự chữa lành hay phục hồi vào cộng đoàn. Một vài người thán phục những lời giảng dạy của Ngài và muốn nghe thêm nữa. Một số thì muốn Ngài làm phép lạ hay dấu lạ về Ngài- coi Ngài như thể là người giúp vui của ngày hôm ấy. Ngoài những hoàn cảnh này, Ba Vua nổi bật với một điều khác biệt hoàn toàn. Trước hết, họ không phải là người Do Thái và không có liên hệ gì với đức tin vào Chúa Giêsu, và cũng không biết về Thiên Chúa mà Ngài rao giảng. Thứ đến, họ đến với Ngài trước khi Ngài nói một lời nào hay làm một phép lạ nào. Ngài chỉ mới là một đứa trẻ và mọi điều

Ngài làm sau này chỉ là một lời hứa xa vời. Nhưng đó là một lời hứa mà những người lạ này đã đến từ một miền đất xa xôi tin rằng sẽ được thực hiện. Cuối cùng, họ đã không đến để mua vui hay chỉ là để ‘xem’ một nơi thú vị. Họ đã đến từ nơi xa xôi để thờ lậy và kính thờ điều mà không phải họ, hay bất cứ ai trên thế giới lúc đó, hiểu rõ như thế nào. Chúng ta không cần phải lặn lội qua sa mạc được ngôi sao hướng dẫn. Chúng ta có Thiên Chúa trong Giáo Hội, qua Thánh Lễ và khi Viếng Chúa. Ngài mời gọi chúng ta đến thờ lậy Ngài. Chúng ta có thể không có một ý tưởng rõ rệt tại sao chúng ta thờ lậy Đức Kitô trong Bánh Thánh. Và có lẽ, chúng ta phấn đấu trong tâm hồn với ý nghĩa là Thánh Thể có phải là sự Hiện Diện Thật Sự của Thiên Chúa không. Thôi thế thì cũng được. Tôi nghi ngờ rằng Ba Vua đã có ý rõ rệt về điều khi họ lên đường đi thờ lậy. Nhưng họ đã ra đi và để Thiên Chúa hướng dẫn họ. Họ đã gặp Đức Kitô, và cuộc đời của họ đã thay đổi.

Chúng ta cũng có cơ hội gặp gỡ Thiên Chúa. Hãy bắt đầu với việc Viếng Thánh Thể như là một quyết tâm cho Năm Mới này. Hãy đi hành hương đến nhà thờ của giáo xứ và thăm viếng Thiên Chúa trong lúc viếng Thánh Thể và thờ lậy Ngài. Hãy nói với Ngài và mở lòng để nghe và chuyện trò với Ngài. Hiển Linh, cũng được gọi là Chúa Tỏ Mình Ra nơi trời Đông, là một lễ ngày lễ mừng của phụng vụ Giáo Hội trong Mùa Giáng Sinh, ngày được chọn cho Lễ Hiển Linh không có nguồn gốc lịch sử chính xác cũng như nền tảng kinh thánh. Ngày mừng Lễ Hiển Linh, là một trong những Lễ Kitô giáo cổ kính nhất, là ngày mùng 6 tháng Giêng, 12 ngày sau Lễ Giáng Sinh. Tuy nhiên, tại nhiều quốc gia, kể cả Nước Mỹ, mừng Lễ Hiển Linh được dời vào Ngày Chúa Nhật giữa mùng 2 và mùng 8 tháng Giêng. Các nước Hi Lạp, Ái Nhĩ Lan, và Ba Lan tiếp tục mừng Lễ Hiển Linh vào ngày mùng 6 tháng Giêng, cũng như tại một số địa phận của nước Đức. Trong thế giới, có rất nhiều truyền thống và thói quen liên quan đến Lễ Hiển Linh. Một truyền thống liên quan đến việc làm phép phấn, được dùng để ghi dấu trên cửa ra vào của các nhà ở với con số của năm đó và những chữ truyền thống của tên Ba Vua: Caspar, Melchior, và Balthasar. Năm nay chẳng hạn, chúng ta sẽ ghi trên cửa:20 + C+ M + B + 22 hay 2022 CMB. Trong một truyền thống khác của Sách Lễ Latinh, và cũng nghi thức đó đang được Giáo Hội Công Giáo Byzantine xử dụng, đó là lời cầu chúc lành với nước thánh thật dài vào buổi Lễ Vọng của Lễ Hiển Linh. Một truyền thống khác cảm động nhưng kém phần phụng vụ là truyền thống nước Ý “Befana” – một truyền thống tặng quà thường bao gồm hình ảnh của người “Phụ Nữ Cao Niên” tên là Befana. Tên của bà có thể là để nhớ đến chữ “Epiphania.” Những Kitô hữu đầu tiên đã cử hành Lễ Hiển Linh trước khi họ mừng lễ Giáng Sinh. Lễ Hiển Linh đầu tiên xẩy ra vào thế kỷ thứ hai bên Ai Cập. Qua thời gian, những cử hành đã mang nhiều truyền thống, tiến triển từ Phương Đông đến Phương Tây, cho đến thế kỷ thứ bốn thì hầu như những Kitô hữu Phương Tây đã áp dụng. Những nghi thức phụng vụ của Kitô hữu đầu tiên về Lễ Hiển Linh biễu tỏ thần tính xác định với bốn biến cố trong đó thần tính của Chúa Giêsu đã được tỏ hiện: khi sinh ra, sự thờ lậy của Ba Vua, lúc Chúa rửa tội, và tại tiệc cưới Cana. Cho dù sau này Giáo Hội Đông Phương đã chọn mừng vào lễ rửa tội của Chúa Giêsu, trong khi đó Giáo Hội Tây Phương đã tiếp tục chọn liên kết lễ này với sự thăm viếng của Ba Vua, cả hai truyền thống đều cùng mừng sự biểu tỏ về Thiên Chúa Ba Ngôi. Lễ mừng theo lịch phụng vụ của Giáo Hội Theo Nghi Lễ Giáo Hội Rôma và kết hiệp bài đọc Phúc Âm cho mỗi Chúa Nhật bắt đầu từ Lễ Hiển Linh và hai Chúa Nhật liền sau đó phản ảnh ba chủ đề cuối cùng của những Kitô hữu đầu tiên đã chọn cho những cử hành Lễ Hiển Linh của họ: sự thăm viếng của Ba Vua, Lễ Chúa Giêsu chịu phép rửa, và tiệc cưới tại Cana. Sự biểu tỏ của Chúa Giêsu cho Dân Ngoại đại diện qua Ba Vua, và được tăng cường bằng hai biến cố khác biểu tỏ bản tính Thiên Chúa của Chúa Giêsu vào thời gian sau này của cuộc đời của Ngài. Ưu tiên của phụng vụ là ẩn dụ về điều mà ơn phúc đang thực hiện bây giờ. Điều đó mang đến ý nghĩa cao trọng của điều đang được chuyển tải trong cách thức vô hình qua những dấu chỉ hữu hình. Trong hai Chúa Nhật kế tiếp, chúng ta mừng Lễ Rửa Tội của Chúa Giêsu tại sông Giođan và tiệc cưới tại Cana được liên đới trong lịch phụng vụ như một phần của Mùa Quanh Năm để mở rộng cái nhìn từ đó chúng ta nhận ra thiên tính của Chúa Giê su. Bài Đọc của Chúa Nhật thứ hai, từ thánh Luca 3:15-16, 21-22, nhắc nhở về sự biểu tỏ của Chúa Giêsu trong con người thiên tính với người Do Thái tại dòng sống Giođan, lúc mà Chúa Giêsu bước trọn vẹn vào sứ mệnh cứu độ trong gia đình nhân loại. Trong bài Phúc Âm của Chúa Nhật còn lại, từ thánh Gioan 2:1-11, gợi lại sự biểu tỏ của Chúa Giêsu trong bản tính con Người thần linh cho các môn đệ tại tiệc cưới Cana. Như thế, Lễ Hiển Linh mừng cuộc hôn phối, giữa Giáo Hội và Đức Kitô; dĩ nhiên, chúng ta là Giáo Hội. Vì thế, tiệc cưới là một dấu chỉ tiệc mừng giữa giao ước thần tính trong tâm hồn của những ai cảm nghiệm ánh sáng thần linh, và đời sống và tình yêu thần linh mà ánh sáng đó chứa đựng. Rượu mới là nguyên lý biến đổi do Đức Kitô mang đến thế gian qua việc mang lấy bản tính nhân loại cho mình, sứ mệnh của Phúc Âm- sứ mệnh loan báo rằng diễn tiến này đang xảy ra: gia đình nhân loại trở nên thần tính. Ba biến cố lịch sự được nhắc đến trong phụng vụ của Lễ Hiển Linh kéo dài trong ba Chúa Nhật liên tiếp diễn tả một biến chuyển liên kết vào Chúa Kitô và sự biến đổi lương tâm. Dĩ nhiên, đó là những lời mời gọi, sự ý thức và tham dự trọn vẹn của chúng ta trong phụng vụ. Hôm nay khi họp mừng, hãy nhớ rằng tình yêu thần linh là ánh sáng đầu tiên được chiểu tỏ cho Ba Vua, và rồi cũng cho chúng ta nữa. Những quà tặng của Ba Vua chứng tỏ những gia tài nội tại của Đức Kitô được mở ra. Bây giờ, những món qua này là của chúng ta, trong phụng vụ Thánh Thể. Hãy suy nghĩ và suy niệm món quà này trong cuộc mừng Lễ Hiển Linh hôm nay. Lời Nguyện Tiến Lễ: “ Lạy Chúa, xin đoái nhìn lễ vật Hội Thánh Chúa tiến dâng, đây không phải là vàng, nhũ hương, và mộc dược, nhưng là bánh rượu tượng trưng cho Đức Kitô, Đấng hằng sống và hiển trị muôn đời. “ Lời Nguyện Kết Lễ: “Xin đi trước chúng con với ánh sáng trời cao, Lạy Chúa, mọi nơi và mọi lúc, để chúng con có thể nhìn thấy rõ ràng và kính cẩn với lòng yêu mến thật sự mầu nhiệm mà Chúa muốn chúng con tham dự. Nhờ Đức Kitô, Chúa chúng con.” Amen.
