Weekly Financial Report

First Sunday of Lent February 21° (Gen 9:8-15;1 Pt 3:18-22; Mk 1:12-15)

The primary purpose of Lent is to prepare us for

the celebration of Jesus’ death and Resurrection. The Church tries to achieve this goal by leading her children to metanoia or true “repentance,” by reordering their priorities, and the changing their values, ideals, and ambitions through fasting, prayer, almsgiving, and self-control. Since by Baptism we share the death and Resurrection of Jesus, today’s readings refer to Baptism directly or indirectly. The first reading tells us how man irrevocably broke the original covenant God had made with Adam and Eve, and how the merciful God selected Noah and his family to renew the covenant. Noah’s rescue from the flood symbolizes how we are saved through the water of Baptism which cleanses us of sin and makes us one with Christ. Today’s Responsorial Psalm (Ps 25) is an exquisite penitential prayer, humbly acknowledging human insufficiency and our radical dependence upon God, His mercy and His forgiveness. The psalmist lists some of God’s Own characteristics that will shape the life of the forgiven penitent: truth, compassion, love, kindness, goodness, uprightness, humility, and justice. In the second reading, St. Peter shows us how Noah’s episode prefigured Baptism. He reminds us that, as Noah and his family were saved from the waters of the deluge, so we are saved through the waters of Baptism. Baptism is an outward sign of the New Covenant that God has made with His people. It makes us adopted children of God, heirs of Heaven, and temples of the Holy Spirit. In the Gospel, we are told that J esus faced and defeated the tempter by his forty days of prayer and penance in the desert immediately following his baptism. It also tells us how Jesus started preaching his Messianic mission: “The time is fulfilled. The kingdom of God is at hand. Repent. Believe in the Gospel.” Life messages: 1) Let us conquer our temptations as Jesus did, using the methods Jesus employed. Jesus conquered his tempter, the devil by prayer, penance, and timely use of the word of God. Hence, during this Lent, let us confront our evil tendencies by talking to God, by listening to Him speaking to us though the Holy Bible, and by practicing self-control to subdue our evil tendencies. 2) Let us convert Lent into a time for spiritual growth and Christian maturity by: a) participating in the Mass each day, or at least a few days in the week; b) setting aside some part of our day for personal prayer; c) reading some Scripture, alone or, better still, with others. d) setting aside some money we might spend on ourselves for meals, CONTINUES NEXT PAGE…...

CONTINUED.... entertainment, or clothes and giving it to an organization which takes care of the less fortunate in our society; e) abstaining from smoking, alcohol, and other evil addictions; f) receiving the Sacrament of Reconciliation in Lent and participating in the “Stations of the Cross” on Fridays; g) visiting the sick and those in nursing homes and doing some acts of charity, kindness, and mercy every day in the Lent. 3) Let us use Lent to fight daily against the evil within us and around us by practicing self-control, relying on the power of prayer, and seeking the assistance and anointing of the Holy Spirit.

REFLEXION What is my response to the New Covenant GOD has made with me through the life, ministry, death, and resurrection of Jesus? How will I spend the 40 days of Lent? What will be the desert into which I will go, so that I can draw closer to the Lord Jesus? How will I handle the temptations which I will face during this special time in the “desert”? How can I help others make GOoD use of the next 40 days, so that they will realize the importance of the covenant GOD has made with all of us?

Primer Domingo de Cuaresma 14° de Febrero (Gen 9:8-15;1 Pt 3:18-22; Mk 1:12-15)

El propósito principal de la Cuaresma es

prepararnos para la celebración de la muerte y resurrección de Jesús. La Iglesia trata de lograr este objetivo llevando a sus hijos a la metanoia o al

verdadero "arrepentimiento", reordenando sus prioridades y cambiando sus valores, ideales y ambiciones a través del ayuno, la oración, la limosna y

el autocontrol. Dado que por el bautismo compartimos la muerte y resurrección de Jesús, las lecturas de hoy se refieren al bautismo directa o indirectamente.

La primera lectura nos cuenta cómo el hombre rompió irrevocablemente el pacto original que Dios había hecho con Adán y Eva, y cómo el Dios

misericordioso seleccionó a Noé y su familia para renovar el pacto. El rescate de Noé del diluvio simboliza cómo somos salvos a través del agua del

bautismo que nos limpia del pecado y nos hace uno con Cristo. El Salmo Responsorial de hoy (Sal 25) es una exquisita oración penitencial, que reconoce

humildemente la insuficiencia humana y nuestra dependencia radical de Dios, Su misericordia y Su perdón. El salmista enumera algunas de las

características propias de Dios que darán forma a la vida del penitente perdonado: verdad, compasión, amor, bondad, bondad, rectitud, humildad y justicia. En la segunda lectura, San Pedro nos muestra cómo el

episodio de Noé prefiguraba el bautismo. Él nos recuerda que, así como Noé y su familia fueron salvados de las aguas del diluvio, también nosotros

somos salvos a través de las aguas del Bautismo. El bautismo es una señal externa del Nuevo Pacto que Dios ha hecho con su pueblo. Nos convierte en hijos

adoptivos de Dios, herederos del cielo y templos del Espíritu Santo. En el Evangelio, se nos dice que Jesús enfrentó y derrotó al tentador con sus cuarenta días de

oración y penitencia en el desierto inmediatamente después de su bautismo. También nos cuenta cómo Jesús comenzó a predicar su misión mesiánica: “El

tiempo se ha cumplido. El reino de Dios está cerca. Arrepentirse. Cree en el Evangelio ". Mensajes de vida: 1) Conquistemos nuestras

tentaciones como lo hizo Jesús, usando los métodos que Jesús empleó. Jesús conquistó a su tentador, el diablo mediante la oración, la penitencia y el uso

oportuno de la palabra de Dios. Por lo tanto, durante esta Cuaresma, enfrentemos nuestras malas tendencias hablando con Dios, escuchándolo hablándonos a través

de la Santa Biblia y practicando el autocontrol para someter nuestras malas tendencias. 2) Convirtamos la

Cuaresma en un tiempo de crecimiento espiritual y madurez cristiana: a) participando en la Misa todos los

días, o al menos algunos días a la semana; b) apartar una parte de nuestro día para la oración personal; c) leer alguna Escritura, solo o, mejor aún, con otros. d)

apartar algo de dinero que podríamos gastar en nosotros mismos para comidas, entretenimiento o ropa y dárselo a una organización que se ocupa de los

menos afortunados de nuestra sociedad; e) abstenerse de fumar, alcohol y otras adicciones malvadas; f) recibir el Sacramento de la Reconciliación en

Cuaresma y participar en el “Vía Crucis” los viernes; g) visitar a los enfermos y a los que se encuentran en residencias y realizar algunos actos de caridad, bondad

y misericordia todos los días en la Cuaresma. 3) Usemos la Cuaresma para luchar diariamente contra el mal dentro de nosotros y alrededor nuestro practicando el autocontrol, confiando en el poder de la oración y

buscando la ayuda y unción del Espíritu Santo.

PARA LA REFLEXION

¿Cuál es mi respuesta al Nuevo Pacto que DIOS ha hecho conmigo a través de la vida, ministerio, muerte y resurrección de Jesús? ¿Cómo pasaré los 40 días de Cuaresma? ¿Cuál será el desierto al que iré para poder acercarme al Señor Jesús? ¿Cómo manejaré las tentaciones que enfrentaré durante este tiempo especial en el "desierto"? ¿Cómo puedo ayudar a otros a hacer un BUEN uso de los próximos 40 días, para que se den cuenta de la importancia del pacto que DIOS ha hecho con todos nosotros?
