As in past years, in the interest of fairness to all, and to allow for a greater choice of dates and times, no individual will be permitted to take more than FIVE (5) Masses at any time [only one (1) of which can be a Sunday Mass]. Your understanding and cooperation are greatly appreciated!
Catholic Understanding of Biblical Inspiration
Beginning in Galilee: An Introduction to the New Testament
After Jesus’ death and resurrection, his first followers began to preach about what God had accomplished through him during his ministry and how God had raised him from the dead. They, together with those who came after them, announced this good news to others so that everyone who believes in him might receive forgiveness of sins in his name (Acts 10:34-43). The record of their preaching about Jesus is contained in the 27 books that make up the New Testament. These three, one-hour sessions on November 4, 11 and 18 will provide an introduction to the New Testament and an overview of its contents. The first session will be devoted to a Catholic understanding of the inspiration of Sacred Scripture. The second session will survey the books of the New Testament outside the Gospels. The third session will introduce the four Gospels with a focus on the Gospel of Mark. Participants may find it useful to bring a Bible with them. Paul D. Sansone studied Scripture at The Catholic University of America, Washington DC, and has been active in adult formation and education for many years.

Faith Formation
SUNDAY FAITH FORMATION--There are no classes today in honor of Columbus Day Weekend. Primary grade Sunday classes meet next on October 15th. Sunday JH classes and the fall Confirmation class both meet next on October 22nd. The Monday evening JH class will meet on October 23rd. WOULD YOU LIKE TO BE A CATECHIST? OR A HELPER IN A CLASS? We are in great need of catechists for our Sunday morning classes--particularly for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd grade. Are you looking for a way to share your faith, time and talents with others? We will provide everything you need to help you share your faith with the children of the parish. Volunteers are also needed as catechist aides and hall monitors. You don’t have to have a child in our program to volunteer. We encourage all adults to prayerfully consider whether this ministry is right for you. All volunteers must attend a Protecting God's Children workshop--don't worry we'll provide you with all the information. Please contact the Faith Formation office at 908-233-7455 or email us at either [email protected] or [email protected]. We look forward to hearing from you! CHILDREN’S LITURGY OF THE WORD VOLUNTEERS NEEDED! Are you looking for a way to share your faith, time and talents with others? Volunteers are needed for our Children’s Liturgy of the Word Ministry (CLOW). CLOW is a ministry that takes place during the 9:00 am Sunday liturgy. Children in grades 1st thru 4th are invited to leave after the opening prayer. Leaders, readers and instrumentalist volunteers share the Word of the Lord, making it come alive through dialogue and music. Families have requested that CLOW take place more often. We can only do that with your help! THIS IS NOT A WEEKLY COMMITMENT! All resources are provided for you--all you need to have is a love for Christ and His Church and a willingness and desire to share that love with others! If you are interested in this ministry, please contact Michelle Angelo at [email protected].
Mount St. Mary House of Prayer, Watchung, will offer the following programs. Registration required; call 908-753-2091 or e-mail: [email protected]

-Mrs. Boyle’s PreK3 class went outside to the school garden and picked a mini watermelon on the vine. Mrs. Boyle cut the watermelon from the vine and brought it into the classroom and the students had a taste for their snack. -The PreK-4 and Kindergarten students participated in International Dot Day. After listening to and discussing The Dot by Peter H. Reynolds, the students used their creative talents and painted “Dot” murals. Blending colors, circles, imagination, creativity and collaboration were all on display. -The fourth graders love being in the science lab. They created models of back bones and discovered the importance of a flexible spinal cord. -The eighth grade classes are gearing up for their class trip in May. This year the students are active participants in raising funds for their full day in New York. They decorated gallon sized water jugs to be brought home as collection sites for spare change and chore money. The Faith Formation Office is hosting
For our first FAMILY EVENT of the 2017-18 Year!
Allan speaks from the tradition of the Church and has the ability to make the scripture come
alive in a way that's relevant and meaningful for today's Catholic. His experience teaching
young people and university students also gives him a sensitivity to those who have been away
from Christ and the Church. He is comfortable teaching the Contemplative Branch of the
Missionaries of Charity as well as those who have been away from the Church for years. "Sentire Cum Ecclesia" - "Thinking with the Church"
As a husband and father of four young children Allan knows that the faith must be lived out in
the home in a way that's relevant and meaningful. Not only are Allan's presentations entertaining, informative and inspiring...they
make practical connections so that the person or family trying to live out the faith in the
providence of their daily lives can find ways in which to live their faith with joy.
Blessed by the Ministry of the Permanent Diaconate
Deacons Tom Pluta, Keith Gibbons and their dear wives Barbara and Terry have ministered compassionately for many years within our beloved community. Last Spring we celebrated with the Pluta family Tom’s 25th anniversary as a permanent deacon. The year 2017-2018 marks the 50th anniversary of the restoration of the diaconate as a full and permanent order in the Universal Church. This weekend our deacons are preaching the Word at all the Masses in celebration of the golden anniversary celebrated throughout the Archdiocese.
The first American permanent deacon was ordained by Bishop Fulton Sheen on June 1, 1969. Bishop Sheen received his doctorate summa cum laude from the University of Louvain, Belgium the site of my theological education from 1982-1986.
Today we have 19,000 deacons in the United States. It has been a joy to co-minister with deacons and their wives as co-workers in the vineyard. Our retired pastor Msgr. Masiello and I worked with Deacon Nicholas Fargo, a member of the first diaconate class ordained for the Archdiocese of Newark at Our Lady of Mercy, Jersey City.
Msgr. Timothy Shugrue, Pastor of St. Michael’s Church, Cranford worked tirelessly for the implementation of the permanent diaconate in the United States. The ministry of the permanent diaconate is a revered part of Archdiocesan history. Our deacons, Tom and Keith continue to create history for our beloved Holy Trinity.
I hope and pray to one day experience the ministry of the female permanent diaconate; a commission convened by Pope Francis is currently studying the inclusion of women as ordained deacons.
May our well-respected deacons Tom and Keith be healthy and well always.
Your brother,
Fr. Anthony
