Memories of my school days
I had 5 lovely and good fun years at the UWC. Sue Ayres will remember how bad my English was upon my arrival and it took a few months before I was accepted in the gang that grew to be my closest friends. I lost my way at the begin-ning moving from class to class. I found the school enormous and really nice. I have so many great memories of my youth in Singapore and all my friends who made those years so important to me. Playing hockey in the boiling sun down on the fields in P.E., Dr Wong’s mathsclass, Home econom-ics class where Heddy and I were allowed to lick the bowl. Getting friends from all over the world taught me a lot and we had so much fun especially in the school breaks and in our free time. School discos and parties made the weekends good fun and boat trips out to the sand banks. It`s not ap-propriate here to mention the naughty things we were up to, but we had a really good time and school work was not the most important. That`s for sure! The sad part about being in Singapore was that every year you lost some good friends. Most people didn`t stay for too long and went back to their home countries. But of course I made new friends a long the way. In 1978 it was my turn to leave after having finish

I look so much forward to seeing hopefully
most of you again in Singapore in August.
It will be so great to be with you again and to quiver about our best
years together!
My Current Status
I went back to Norway in 1978 and studied law and completed my law degree in 1987. I got married to Erik Jenssen in 1985 and we have three “children”; Caroline 21, Charlotte 19 and Johan Christian 15. My 4th child is a lovely Irish soft-coated Wheaten Terrier Bonzo. He is 6 years old and likes to take his mum for walkies all the time. We live in Baerum just outside Oslo near the forest. I work as a lawyer in Oslo in a big Employers organization trying to please our 14 000 company members. I work with the Environ-mental act mainly helping solve personel conflicts.
4th year. I was terribly sad to say-ing goodbye to my good friends and it was extremely hard for me. For-tunately I have kept in touch with many of my old friends. The world we now are living in with e-mails and Facebook makes it a lot easier to keep in contact than the extreme-ly expensive telephone calls we used to have. The past months my e-mail box has exploded with e-mails from so many eager old Singapore friends.

Mist being blown off the fountain, toking ly det ,15c pineap-ple, Mr Ho’s curry puffs, polo mints, writing notes to each other about vital nothings and folding them up into trian-gles, deodorant fights in PE change room, high drama at the lockers, LSD discos, high pants, thin belts,- Rod Stewart’s Sailing still gives me a nervous tick-grass stains, Mr Archiba-ld Barlas and his.. tropical condition, Miss Bourne and her 5 inch cork heels, Mr Breeze’s resonant ‘s’, the lipstick on Mrs Moodie’s front teeth, the way Mr Scarrrlett would roll his ‘r’s, Mr Lee ( Maths ) “telling me that I indulge in use-less idle chatter” -still do of course. Sproga shorts ,Holland Pillage pive Pifty!Ian Graham...mmmm ...Ian Graham. Chucking a tomato peel on an examiner’s shoe in Home ec., someone leaving the gas on Miss Bourne lighting the oven, the two streaks of Savlon where Miss Bourne’s eyebrows used to be, hell bus rides with the Singhs ,worse ones on SBS buses, speaking in upa bubba language, the Dutch kids and their salty liquorice, Suzi Chambers having her own bubblegum machine. That Pulau Ubin trip how did we swing it? Doing a house of horrors on fair day in the drama room but really just chucking spaghetti on little kids. The American School cheerleaders and then our very own Wildcats at basket ball games! “dribble it pass it put it in the basket””Thunder thun-deration we’re the WILDCAT delegation”. All the airport departure scenes and friends leaving that you thought you’d never see again.

It seems there is a gap in my life because those special high school rela-tionships just vapour-
ised upon leaving UWC. It makes reconnecting
so special. Sharing a fa-miliar and unusual past as we have makes our
bonds unique. I look for-ward to hearing about your lives and adven-
tures when we see each other in August. God
speed lah!

Left UWC and went to Uni in Sydney. I have had an extraordinarily normal and happy life to date. Have been working and studying in Education for the last 25 years. I love the lifestyle that it brings and enjoy the honesty of young children as brutal as it is. We have a 6 year old daughter who is presently doing Kung Fu impressions in the bath. Family and work keep me busy . Girlfriends keep me sane. Husband is fabulous and he can tell you all about that when you meet him. I am involved in my local church community where we are performing a play RENOVATIONS to raise money for a village classroom in Ugan-da which we sponsor. Partial nude scenes not so pretty but for a good cause. Please let me know if you are coming down my way I love to see old UWC ‘prens’lah. We can go ada makan minum lah!!

Despite the short time I was there I made a few close friends who have kept in touch (Mee Ling, Tinnee, Fong Lan, Sherilynn/Salmah). They were formative years. I liked the incredibly international feel of the school. I liked the strong art school. In retrospect, I wish I had taken advantage of the experience of being there much more. Should have studied harder instead of smoking keretek behind the TD room after prep. (I gave up smoking 4 years ago when my son threatened to start if I didn’t stop!) Should have done sport. The opportunities were there to be grasped.

I have been married for nearly 20 years to a fellow Sabahan. We have three kids – two boys and a girl. The eldest started university this year, the youngest is in kindergarten. I have been in publishing for over 20 years. We produce magazines (notably one entitled Cosmetic Surgery & Beauty – a topic that has been growing in interest the world over in the past decade) and books for clients. I put the lessons I learnt in Mr. Breeze’s (a man I admired for his meticulous attention to detail) class to good use all the time.
...Let’s see if these are right... Fung Jin, Lian Pik, Swee Lian, Cindy Russell, Fred Moreau, Isabelle Desenne, Carmela. Fred and I wrote a song which she sang to my bad guitar play-
ing at a school concert once.

Ok, so Mr Ho certainly made a lasting impression on me with the shortbread he used to make because I still love shortbread 30 years on! I remember feeling “cold” on some rainy days and actually wearing the school jumper. The trip (by train in “Kelas Tiga”) to Pulau Pangkor was a highlight. Just don’t ask me what the purpose of the project was, or what it was even about. All I remem-ber was having lots of fun with the girls! I loved the visits we used to make to the orphanage. The visit to UWC by Prince Charles stands out and I feel very privileged to have met him. Finally, a special mention must go to the Hainanese Chicken and Rice we used to eat at the HDB flats across the road. In fact, the thing I miss most about Singapore is the “makan”!

I am so excited about catch-ing up with everyone in
August! It will be great to see some “old” and familiar
faces as well as probably get-ting to know a few people I
did not know so well back at school. And, yes, I can still fit into my turquoise school dress. I must dig it out and
bring it along, and hopefully have the courage to wear it to the barbecue at UWC on
the Sunday!
My life after UWCSEA
Living in Sydney, Australia with my two children Felix (4) and Stina (11). I work at HSBC Bank as Team Leader in the Cus-tomer Service Call Centre. Life with two young kids follows a fairly strict routine but when I get the chance I love going out for dinner or to the movies.

Memories of my school daysA meeting of the united nations and more – I remember mixing with all the different nationalities and how unusual it was that all nationalities did not stick together but mixed so well, I had Japanese, Thai, Scottish, Australian, Singapo-rian, Indian, English, these were just a few of the nationali-ties were some of the people I remember spending time with. I loved lunchtimes round the fountain canteen, I loved doing different things like teaching deaf children how to swim, I loved the heat (yes I did- now I hate it), I loved the restau-rants across the road at the HDB where we used to sneak off for lunch, I guess I just loved it all.
My Current Status I live in a Southern Suburb of Brisbane just 40 minutes north of the much famous Gold Coast and about 1.25 hours from the Sunshine Coast. I have a beautiful home with the most wonderful man, Peter. I have never married and don’t have any children but thankfully Peter has 4, one of which I am off to Los Angeles with Peter to meet in October 2010. I work (as little as possible ha! Ha!) as an Administration Manager for a Ray White Real Estate Office and have been there for 4.5 years. I am heavily involved with our Corporate Office in the use of a specialised database developed in Perth especially for real estate. Having just lost both my mother and mother-in-law this year Peter and I are going to travel a lot more.

I just love the fact that we are all still in con-tact and I look forward to catching up with anyone if I travel to where you live. If any-one comes to Brisbane and doesn’t contact me I will be disappointed as I would love to catch up and there is always a bed or two if you need it. Thank you for being part of that great experience. I hope that your reunion
for those able to make it, will be a great night and I look forward to hearing all about it
after the event. Sorry I can’t make it – will be thinking of you all.

Football behind the small hall every lunch time, where the tackles -the only thing I was good in- left me with hole-y trousers! In my IB years, took an interest in our dutch-ie band, where I played single note on a (terri-ble!!) old bass guitar ..., remember Dirk? -I have now left that modern music scene, and now love classical music, and love singing -incuding opera!! Still have contact with Nick Lee -our chemistry teacher- who love of teaching chemistry, saw my involvement in Biochem-istry. This led to molecular developmental biology, .... but now I am heading along paths set by Miss Kirwan and Mr Teo’s love in Art!

Memories of my school daysMy best memories of my days spent at UWCSEA was hearing all the different accents at lunch time in the canteen. Even all these year later I have man-aged to retain a tuned ear and have no problems lis-tening to even the thickest accent. However, I think how well we all got on regardless of our skin colour or the origin of the country that we were from. I sup-pose in hindsight we we just a bunch of kids drawn together from all four corners of the world and we had to make the best of it. Even though we were far from home and familiar things at the end of the day we were teenagers and I know I relished in the fact the this was a great opportunity to experience a dif-ferent life even if it was only for 18 months. It really made me who I am today.

My life after UWCSEAI moved back to Canberra, Australia in Apr 1978 and finished my education in Dec 1979. I really had no idea what I wanted to do after school so was unemployed for about 8 months. In Oct 1980 I commenced work in the Department of Defence (as a civilian) and 30 years later I am still there. I really enjoy the work I do there. I have been very fortunate to had had some great experiences with the Department such as crawling over naval ships, helicopters and the like.
I would like the opportunity to wish you all the very best and thanks for being part of my life all
those years ago.

It was a huge privilege to be to be a student (and a boarder) there. Memories of my school days
The incongruency of kids wearing sweaters in the hot and humid tropics. Of course this was necessary to deal with the ice-box class rooms. My boarding years (only year 1 and 2) were fun, scary and strange, all at the same time. In hind-sight I wish I’d stayed a boarder for the entire time - It would have allowed me to grow up with my peers.
My Current Status
I’m currently training horses and teaching riding at Cardi-nal Points Farm, in Texas. Please visit my website (www.cardinalpointsfarm.com), or stop by if you’re in the Houston area in Texas.

Memories of my school days
My memories are mostly good. I started off overwieght and on the outside but soon made good friends that I am still in touch with today. I remember Dr Wong’s maths class - I was at the back -often being yelled at! Mr Breeze, or Breezy Baby as we liked to call him! As long as my excuses were eleborate enough I could get away with handing in an essay late....pa-ties with Sue Ayes, late nights with Nadene Allen and long debates with Anne-Marie Goetz. Disco’s at the American Club and the Dutch club with school mates and being ‘in love’. Firtling with and teasing Mr Ian Graham......all good stuff!
My Current Status
I stayed in S’pore and worked for the 2 years before finally having to leave...I travelled and worked in Hong Kong and Australia and the ended up in London. I started as a travel agent, then went into recruitment and ended up doing Per-sonnel for a Lloyd’s Insurance Broker. I stayed in the Uk for 20 years where I married and had two sons, now 17 and 15. Then I moved to Sydney in 2003 where I divorced and am now remarried to the most wonderful man.
Can’t wait to see everyone - be
reminded of things I have forgotten and
make new memories.

Went to live in Italy and joined the Carabinieri (Police), where I work up to this day as a Chief Inspector. Travelled a lot working for the U.N. and the E.U. in war ridden coun-tries, mainly in the Balkans, Africa and the Middle East.

Memories of my school days
Although initially being home sick and not appreciat-ing the golden opportunity that had been presented to me, within 6 months of joining UWC I was starting to see the light. The excellent facilities and quality of the majority of the teaching staff soon had me achieving much more than I ever would have had I remained at my comprehensive school in deepest darkest Somerset in the UK. Canoeing in the fountain when we couldn’t get down to Pasir Panjang, sailing the GP14’s and when you were lucky the 420 down at the Republic of Singapore Yacht Club and experiencing the 1st set of wind surfers to be brought into Singapore out on one of the islands, where all wonderful experiences that re-ally made me appreciate just how lucky I really was. I joined Tim Agerbaks tutor group 4TKA in January 1977 and although moving half way around the world was a shock to the system, it soon became evident that I was not the only one. Tim Agerbak was a calm and stabilising influence and by the time I had been intro-duced to the likes of Alan Barns, John Burgees, Paul O’Shea, Geoff Potts and Mr Allen I really understood that my parents had done the right thing in moving me to Singapore.

My Life after UWCSince leaving the UWC I have lived and worked in many countries around the world primarily in the shipbuilding and design, plus the offshore oil industry (bah humbug, I know. No hate mail please). I did spend several years as a fast jet pilot in the British Royal Navy, getting to fly the Sea Harrier, but left at the end of 1990 after losing a couple of friends, as I was sure that I was also going to end up in a smoking hole. I obtained my commercial pilots licence on leaving but just couldn’t get excited about flying in the commercial world and re-joined the oil industry, as they at least would pay me enough to enable me to fly what I wanted to fly and how I wanted to fly. I now have a share in a Russian aerobatic aeroplane called a YAK52 which has been the closest in terms of fun that I could find to the time I had with fast jet military flying.
Memories of my school days
I have so many fond memories it is hard to put them into a concise note but I will always remember things such as:Running around the campus supposedly dressed as a Mummy for the haunted house at the fete, but looking back at photographs appearing like a bad extra from a cheap hospital soap;Flying around in boats of all descriptions at every opportunity, especially a great project week; After school squash down at Fort Canning and also at the Tanglin Club with Jos Ellis;Sweet and Sour Pork or Fried Rice at lunch-time in the canteen (remembering to get your lunch ticket at morning break);Roti and curry over at the HDB Flats opposite the campus and who could ever forget the con-tinuous great weather.

Although I have been back to Singapore on many occasions since leaving UWC and have
subsequently met various people around the world, I am really
looking forward to catching up with everyone at the reunion in
August 2010.
My Life after UWC
Work still takes me all around the world and in fact I am typing this update while I am in Angola for a week, hav-ing only got back from Houston, Texas last week where I had been for two weeks. Visiting foreign parts, meeting different people and experiencing their cultures still excites me, but there is just not enough time to visit all of the places that I would like to visit. We don’t have any chil-dren which helps in being able to move around the world easily, although too many boys toys (spending on myself rather than children) mean that when I am away I don’t get to indulge as much as I like with my cars, aeroplane etc. I still enjoy sailing, although I have become soft, now preferring cruising around in big yachts in warm climates rather than racing dinghies and racing keel boats and I still try and get out on my mountain bike as often as I can.
Although inside I still don’t feel any older and my magic mirror in the bathroom lets me think that I don’t
look any older, it is going to be
interesting to get a reality check and see how many people I recognise
and how many recognise me after 30 years!!
