Reunion is a French island with a population of about 800,000 located

in the Indian Ocean, east of Madagascar, about 200 kilometres (120 mi) south west of Mauritius,

the nearest island.

location prevents damage to residential areas.

Sometimes hurricanes reach the island and cause varying degrees of damage.

Sugar cane is currently one of the most important economic resources

  of the Island.
