Physical and mental preparation
Returning to dance
activity
By the end of this webinar, we hope to
Discuss considerations for physical and mental preparation for
returning to dance in relation to relevant UK government guidance
including
• Mental Health: Common challenges experienced as a result
of ongoing CV-19, Support, Checking-in, Managing
(fluctuating) Emotions, Empathy and Resilience
• Injury management: Physical care and injury prevention,
managing existing injuries, or strategies for returning
gradually
Provide an opportunity to ask questions

Preparation is key
● Returning to dance activities will be a transition.
● It’s possible that your body and mind will be less
trained, fit, or prepared than they were when you
last engaged in your activities fully.
● Concerns are normal, and expected. Seek help if
you need it.
● Manage expectations – for yourself and those you
work with.
5
Context of these webinars
● Public health is a devolved issue. Keep in mind that guidance for dance activities in England, Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales varies.
● If planning dance activity, you should always consider whether there are local restrictions in place in your area or region. If so, you should first read the guidance relevant to your area as this may supersede guidance in this webinar.
● Government guidance will evolve with science. No one has all the answers, as medical and scientific understanding of coronavirus disease is developing – we are learning together!
● Read the relevant government guidance for your planned work. Use creativity, consider the resources available to you and discuss ideas with others to address guidance within your context.
● We aim to:○ Provide a space to discuss, raise questions, identify issues and
share practice○ Support practical implementation of government guidance
across the dance sector to help everyone to return to dancing safely

How to use this webinar
Type questions into the Q&A box

where you are and where

Source the relevant type of
support – practical,
informational, emotional.

2. Check-in with Yourself and Others

4. Demonstrate Empathy
8/6/2020 17
◦ Everyone return to dance and training, study, practice, rehearsing and eventually performing, will be different depending on their individual circumstances.
◦ It is important to listen to yourself and others and show empathy and compassion.
◦ Practice acceptance.
Irina Roncaglia PhD CPsychol AFBPsS
5. Lessons Learnt from the Lockdown
06/08/2020
Try to think about what has worked well and what new skills have you learnt and how you can incorporate them into your own self-care practices.
Think about how you can retain and protect these during you return to dance activity.
Build your own personal model of resilience (PMR).
